Nice concise video. Several years ago did this installation on a 15 year old Sienna and cleaning the bolt holes was 90% of the work. First thought the bolts were the wrong size but it was the nut thread corrosion that was very severe. Used a wire brush to start with and then penetrating oil to soften the rust and the bolts still would not start. Finally rented a tap and dye set from Autozone and used a tap to clean the threads. Even then it took a lot of back and forth (in and out) gaining about a half turn at a time to get the threads cleaned. Was very challenging on the exhaust pipe side. In total cleaning the threads took several hours over a few days. Used hand tools (no power) to prevent stripping the threads. After the thread holes were clean the installation went as shown in the video. Now about to do the same installion on another 15 year old Sienna. Came here looking for alternate ways to clean the threads.
I bought a Curt trailer hitch made for my 2017 Nissan Rouge and this was very helpful. I had called a local auto repair shop and they wanted to charge me $250.00! You saved me a lot of money. Thank you!
I bought the same hitch, and installed it last night. This video helped. It probably took me about 40 minutes. A universal joint for socket really helped get around the exhaust. I did not have to cut any underbody trim. This hitch is nice because it sits up high, which is important for an already low to ground minivan. Thanks for the video!
In case anyone ran into the same issues I did ... if the holes for the bolts on your van are rusty enough that you can't get the bolts started properly, or they won't turn in the hole under finger pressure, you will probably benefit from cleaning out the threads a little more properly. The threads I got with mine are M12 1.25 (fine thread) -- same thread size as some spark plugs. I had to go find a tap, with this thread, and 'chase' it all the way through (keep it oiled, do a quarter turn, back if off, and go at it again for another quarter turn, etc.) to clean out the threads. Once I ran the tap through (had to use channel-locks to turn it -- the tap handle I had wouldn't fit in the space), the bolts turned like ice -- was easily able to torque it up to 79 lbs.
Thanks to your video, I took the time to install one in my car myself without taking it to the dealership. Saved me some good cash. Although challenging because it was just me and the trailer hitch was heavier than anticipated. It took me about 35 to 40 min.
Thanks for your video! I have the 2015 Sienna. The only difference is that you have to cut a long opening in the plastic pan on the left side first. Your video of how to slide the right side just above the muffler was a huge save for time and effort! I have to confess one thing -- I should have peeled off the plastic circles of tape covering the threads completely. Instead, I was lazy and just punched a hole after peeling off a couple. the tape is really tough, so I had to put in a lot more effort later trying to scrape off tape bits ... set myself up to fail...
Thanks for this VERY detailed instructions and especially mentioning the torque wrench and the specific pounds it should be set at . You know us MEN don't like to READ no INSTRUCTIONS lol 😅
His was 2006 he doesn't answer any of the questions in the video. Often you click on his picture. Find other videos and most likely it will be that same vehicle 2006
I just did a Subaru Forrester and it was a bit more involved. Had to drop the exhaust, remove (and later trim) a heat shield, and use a die grinder to enlarge a couple holes in the frame. Then you feed bolts up thru that hole to the others via spring wires. Without a die grinder, you might be stuck.
I got my Sienna used with one of these already installed. We never towed anything so I recently took the hitch off as it would sometimes hit the ground, and it was getting rusty. So I was wondering what should I do with the leftover bolt holes and I guess from this video it's clear I should leave the bolts in, maybe even put some antiseize so I don't have grief later on if I decide to reinstall the hitch.
After 13 years of rust, it took me 2 hours to clear the junk off the receiving nuts for my 2007 FWD Sienna. Once the nuts are ready to receive the bolts, it took me 20 minutes to install it. A flex joint is required to do the passenger side in case you don't want to remove the exhaust pipe.
Hopefully you cn help--my Curt hitch rubs and makes noise under my car although it is very sure. Any suggestions? I do not have anything except the hitc on the car. should there be rubber busihing in between both metals? Thank you
Thank you I am looking for hitch and bike rack as well ... I was looking online for installation but I read some negative comments for that place in Grand prairie
What about the rest of the hitch (the tow ball)? Do you buy it separately? I was given two quotes. U-Haul wants $450.00 to install, and a local hitch installer wanted $519.00 to install.
Super video and showing the install instructions at the end was SUPER!! I can't get my weldnut cleaned very well.... can't even start 1 bolt... will try a M12 1.25 thread chaser
Some helpful tips: 1) use PB blaster or WD 40 and a wire brush to help clear out any loose rust from the weld nuts 2) Use a m12 x 1.25 tap to retap the weld nut threads (spray tap & weld nuts with WD 40 for lubrication). This will remove all rust/corrosion and will renew the threads. Also, you can use a socket and socket wrench with an extension with the tap instead of a tap wrench. The socket size may differ depending on the manufacturer of the tap ( mine fit a 5/16 socket) 3) once threads are retapped, repeat step 1 to clear out any remaining loose rust. This will make installation of the hitch much easier. After doing these steps it took me only 15 mins to install the hitch by myself.
Good video, but wondering. Off camera was your son also holding up trailer hitch? The tail pipe kinda helped you out here. I have a Ford Ranger and wondering how I can do this by myself or did you need another person to hold one side for you? thanks
2:27 Are those washers conical? My Curt hitch came with conical washers and the manual doesn't bother to address which direction they should be installed. I assume convex section goes against hitch, bolt head in the concave portion.
Adam. When you installed, did you notice any play between the bolt holes of the receiver and the bolts themselves? I had a nearly identical one installed by someone else and it's pitched slightly to the right when facing the rear of the car. I'm wondering which is more likely: a sloppy install or a bent receiver.
I think the threads may need some waterproof grease (like marine grease) for proper torque and easy removal, especially if they are a bit dirty and rusty like they are in the video. I'm sure blue loctite would work as well.
@@samanthamix5241 when I look under the car and look for where those holes where the screws are supposed to go, I just see black plastic. i pried the thick plastic away to make sure there indeed were the threads, like in the beginning of the video, hidden. then I did my best to cut a rectangle out by eyeballing it. not the prettiest job but it worked. :)
Anyone else scrapping the ground every time they go into their drive or over any bump or dip? We just installed and keep bottoming out. Has anyone tried attaching some skid rollers?
it all depends on your type of car you have, and what type of trailer hitch you choose i guess. on my toyota yaris i just loosend the rearest rubber fastener on the exoust pipe and dragd it 2-3 inches sideways holding it out of the way with some rope while i mounted the screws on that side. the rope isnt realy nessesary, since its easy to push the pipe aside as soon as you loosen the rubber, hehe but i like for things not to interfere while i struggle to thread the bolts.

Can this hitch be used on an older Avalon? When searching for hitches, they're showing two different styles.

Was it a 19mm socket used to tighten the bolts for the new hitch?
What about the electrical connections for the trailer or whatever you pulling ??
Nice video wish I had a dad like you!
Oh my god, just the part and the very same car that I have. Going home to do mine right now. Thank you!?!
Nice “Wire Brush”, LOL. I have an OTIS.
Just curious what year your Sienna is?
Are the screw holes normally in the vehicle already?
Matt Seymour usually

Might have missed it but what’s the weight of hitch?
Are there sizes to be aware of for different sedans
2:27 Are those washers conical? My Curt hitch came with conical washers and the manual doesn't bother to address which direction they should be installed.
I assume convex section goes against hitch, bolt head in the concave portion.
Etrailer vid for this installation says concave side of washer should have little barbs near edge, & should face hitch, not bolt head.
I got the same model by Curt, but it doesn’t fit well on my Toyota Sienna 2009.
Do you need a specific towbar for each model or make of car?
@@malakai651 there is some crossover but basically yes, they are different. You will need to confirm it fits.

Hi Adam, great video. Can you install a hitch to a 2006 Nissan Sentra?
How do you know what is a good brand?
Grrrreaat Vid!! Simple and very informative! I have a Jeep Cherokee2018….
really appreciate the video. I bought the exact hitch on Amazon. Arrives in one week. Will attempt to install and revert. :)
Good video, to the point! Also good tips for installing on your driveway.

Does the hitch scrape more than not having one on?
Thanks so much for this very nice video
This is an awesome video. Thank you.
What year is your toyota sienna ??
I liked your 'wire brush' I have a few of those myself 😁
Quick and to the point thanks!
is this compatible with u-haul trailers?
Excellent vid! Thank you!
Thanks for this informative vid! Do you think loctite is necessary?
I think the threads may need some waterproof grease (like marine grease) for proper torque and easy removal, especially if they are a bit dirty and rusty like they are in the video. I'm sure blue loctite would work as well.
Thanks for mentioning the tq spec. I skimmed through 7 videos to find it! Everyone else said "torque to spec" as they were installing it... Useless!
Battery terminal cleaning brush would work
Hi , how can i order a towbar from curt?
just to know i want to buy 1 for my toyota premio yr 2000 model ct 211 ...which one i have to buy thx u
Why the "exposed" hitch vs. the "hidden" one?
September 2024 here lol.... oh man ima have trouble with mine. I worked at a aggregate asphalt site lol.
Where can I find the link ? Thanks
Very clear. Thank you.
Thank you so much, your video is so valuable!God Bless you!
So glad its on a Sienna
perfect! thanks dude!
Are trailer hitches vehicle specific or are they universal?
Specific to the Vehicle
It looks like you did not remove the underbody panel at all. Or is this something that I missed?
no need, just cut two holes in it
@@daiyinglu Where did you cut the holes? I didn't see that in the video.

A torque wrench is not meant for threading a bolt all the way just the final turn and a half

As a matter of fact, all trailer hitches should bear a car manufacturer's Seal Of Approval.
