How to hookup a trailer in Ten Easy steps:
Step 1: Test the tow vehicle's wiring.
Step 2: Verify the trailer ball & hitch meet the min. gross vehicle weight rating. Also check that the ball and hitch size match.
Step 3: Back up to trailer
Step 4: Lower the tongue jack, secure the tongue latch, and insert the safety keeper.
Step 5: Lift up on the trailer using the tongue jack to make sure there is a secure connection between the trailer and the hitch.
Step 6: Raise and secure the tongue jack for towing.
Step 7: Hook up safety chains making sure to cross them as you do
Step 8: Connect the lights. Run the light cord through the safety keeper.
Step 9: Step back and verify that the trailer is level or slightly up hill.
Step 10: Check all the running lights, left and right signal, and brake lights.
Step 11: Drive safely.

Don’t forget to make wider turns and to stay in the slow lane. Lol
Today is my first time hooking up a trailer. I can use all the advice I can get. Lol. I should video me backing up to my garage. That should get a million laughs
@@keithgreene79 how'd it go today's my first day I'm picking up my trailer😂
@@Juan-dc6yf Driving it forward was fine. I'm still a bit backwards on reverse. My brother-in-law is a commercial truck driver and he instructed me to try backing up to my driver's side for the majority of the time. He said that it's easier because you can look at what you doing compared to using the mirror on the passenger side. I guess it was easier. LOL
😳😷Say a little prayer
Cool I think this just answered all my questions
Thanks for the post
Banana Bandana dude I see you comment on a lot of carnivore videos and now I see you here... weird lol

Those chains are too Big
I'm going to hear that fuckin' song in my. sleep.
Every time you hook up you’re trailer 😂
Today my husband asked me to take our trailer in for electrical repairs. I had never hooked up our trailer by myself so this was very helpful, thank you.
Same
Me too
There is NO NEED for that acoustic guitar to rock this hard. It's a video about a trailer hitch, for crissakes!
BERWN NU NEWRNNN NUH NEWRRRRN NE DO KNE KNE KNIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t have a truck or a trailer and I will never get one. Why am I watching this? Well atleast I know how it works.
Great video! I do hook my chains from underneath the vehicle, have been doing that since 1990.

Should have gotten a manicure 💅 too
Thanks, that's the same trailer I used yesterday. Had a hard time releasing/ locking the ball coupler. Now I know how. 😊
What was that device to test tow vehicle's wiring?
I feel like 95% of people with trailers don’t do half of these steps
Question . What would happen if your trailer ain’t leveled with your truck?
They forgot check tire pressure/quality... considering this is a rental that sits out in the weather when not in use.
Saved me first time on the job👍
Never have your trailer slightly up hill. If you stop fast, front brakes come on back end of vehicle comes up, if trailer is slightly down ward it will keep back end of vehicle from coming up 4 million miles in all most 40years of pulling trailers have a nice day.
Wish I would’ve watched this video before looking stupid at work not knowing how to hook up the trailer to the work truck
I hope you still got your job and that you learned how to hook up a trailer !!
Flip flops are not safety shoes. If that trailer dropped on her foot she wouldn’t be cool calm and collected then
Very simple straightforward. Everybody else wants to talk to her head off
Step one is pointless if you're going to do step ten anyway...
I know this comment is a year old but step one isn't pointless. By doing step one you know the tow vehicle light plug/wires/fuses are working properly. If there is something wrong you can isolate the problem. If you get to step ten and something doesn't work, then you know the problem is the trailer. To many people have had one or more lights out on a trailer and bought bulbs, light assemblys or new wires. Or this is a rental trailer, complain to the store that their rental is crap when it was the tow vehicles fault all along.
Today I am procuring my lovely belongings! I will need to hook up a truck to the trailer … this vid is EXCELLENT step by step for the newbie, the only difference is the truck I’m using is much older and trailer is very old …
This video proved to myself I CAN DO IT!! & and I DID!!! ❤( just upgraded my skill set!!!)
Come on, nobody in California is going to tow a trailer.
I have a 2″ ball that only fits about 50% over the 2″ coupler. I have to take my finger & move the lip of the underjaw out of the way as I’m lowering down the coupler to make sure it covers 100% of the ball. The whole trailer hitch coupler assembly on the trailer side is about 20 years old. If i put a brand new coupler assembly on, (as long as it’s the exact same size), would that solve my problem of the ball fitting only 50% over the 2″ coupler?
Thank you
Always grease your balls! (your hitch ball that is)
Thanks ! Big trip soon, 3500 kilometers, my cargo trailer need to be well fixed 😀
Thank you! This was a perfectly clear video that showed exactly what I needed!
If you run trailer lights the way they showed there's a good possibility you'll lose the trailer.
Please elaborate
Mate those safety chains are way too long.
Hooking up and unhooking is easy. Its the backing up of the truck to get the hitch right. If you do it the first try, maybe 2 or 3 on an unfamiliar slope, you still got it
all the negative comments on failing to do a trailer inspection. Yet they all apparently cant read the title lol.
Good video I’m buying a welder with a trailer so I needed this 😅
Don't forget to drive in the slow lane so people who want to drive at 30 above the speed limit will tailgate you for 10-15 miles until a cop pulls you over for holding up traffic even though I wasn't in the fast lane
No confío en esos enganches de bola, vi en tres ocasiones que en un desnivel se sueltan, prefiero el tipo de enganche que traen los tráilers.
Tighten those chains up, you want them as short as possible without them interfering with the ride, ideally You want to be able unhitch the trailer and it not touch the ground, by the chains holding it in the air
As long as the chains are off the ground, they are fine. Tightening means the trailer loses the ability to turn without being dragged. Nice job...
Stephen D James I said tighten up without interfering with the ride. You don't need them THAT loose. The way to check that is tighten chains, then turn your trailer so you're almost jack knived, then hook chains up and test to see if they're going to interfere. I don't tow real heavy equipment, but there's no downside to having shorter chains that don't interfere with anything. Longer chains make for easier cargo loss on trailer when/if hitch malfunctions arise.
@@Colonel_C-man As long as they are off the ground, your good. Some people will twist the chain to bring up the height. And that is dangerous.. Safe Drives
Stephen D James I wasn't suggesting twisting chains, that's lazy. Go into where your chains are mounted and just pull the chain back a few links. Just a personal preference I guess
@@canadiantimberwolf1 no that's not true, those chains are supposed to keep the trailer from hitting the ground if it comes unhooked. If they're too loose then the hitch will slam right on the ground if it becomes unhooked. You don't want those chains hanging too low because they won't do shit if they're too loose.
Those safety chains are too long!
wait...i dont have a GF how can i do this without one? damn. thanks anyway.
Something everyone missed is she forgot to grease the ball. I guess I'm the only one that keeps grease on the ball lol!
I put grease on my balls but I never run my trailer lights cord the chains or safety clip I let it hang but really i convert all my trailer to 7 way flat because most of my trailer n trucks has 7 flat n more reliable then 4 flat
Ken Boxx I do.
@@paulrreeder not really
@@brentbradley6711 yeah it becuase i had more problem with 4 flat plug then rv 7way and even before rv 7way i had 7 round pin trailer plug
@@paulrreeder I used a 7 pin for many years and all my problems went away when I went to the simple 4 pin.
Thx for the simple how to guide!
Thank you, I learned a new step.
The way she hooked up the breakaway chains are incorrect, you hook from under up so if your trailer comes off the truck it pulls on the meat of the hook not the weakest point of the hook. When it’s small hooks and they don’t fit on the larger D rings of a larger truck they go through the D rings and latch onto themselves !
Sort of a big truck for such a tiny trailer lol.
Thanks for the informative video and for using a woman for the demonstration because we all know that in the real world it’s usually the woman of the house that does these type of hookups! LoL
Question where do I put my trailer lights if I can’t find the plugs could it be under the bumper
01silver auto
You may have to install the trailer wiring yourself. Not all vehicles come equipped with the plug. It may be hidden underneath the vehicle but probably not.
It's funny how I've been driving semi trucks for 8 years now and obviously I know how to hook up a semi trailer, and I know how to hook up doubles (even trained other drivers), but here I am watching a video on how to hook up a simple ball hitch trailer...
Tighten up those chains! When you're chains are that loose they won't do anything for you.
What Audionautix song did you use for this video?

Y did I just watch this what’s next how to eat cereal
Okay I didn't find it in the description but I found where I can get it from the description do you remember the name of the file that you used?
My chains don’t fit crossed it is rlly bad if I don’t cross them
Wait so what is the little medal ball on the back of the truck called
Trailer hitch
Every video there’s so much talking
Thank you !! Very helpful 😊
Not helpful, the hardest part is securing the ball onto the trailer and there is no tips on that.
10 steps? I’m back up Ihook it on and leave, that’s three
My freightshaker and reefer unit look a little different

How much does that trailer weigh?
About 1200 pounds. It's pretty light.
Step 11 is very important people!!!
You said ten steps
You didn't add a thin layer of grease to the ball.
Bruh
This is extremely excessive...
Yo you said 10 steps and there is 11 steps? 😂
Hola digame como.puedo conseguir la pieza del tiro
If you are looking at the coupler hitch part, not the ball, how do you tell which size ball goes into that? What I mean is, if you go look at a used trailer you've never seen before, you see that big coupler piece that connects and rests on the ball, and I realized that its a whole different game to look at that and try to figure out which size ball goes with it. This looks harder to tell which size goes in it than just looking at the ball. How do people do that?
Thanks.
It should be stamped on the trailer where it connects to the ball. Ball size and weight of the trailer should be marked.
@@chrishenning8829 Thank you

Probably. The real issue is with this hitch system. The tongue and coupler hitches absolutely suck, they're the cheapest of the cheap and I hate them. Sliding collar hitches are much better, they're stronger and they hook up easier. You don't even need a pin with one of those hitches.
@@ElectronicsForFun Can u send me a video or picture example of a sliding collar hitch? I sure can't find one
Any tips on how to avoid catching the backside of the latch assembly? I think this is a more common problem that I can't seem to find tips at how to avoid. When this happens it can look like the latch is on. It doesn't sit up much higher than normal but the latch clips easier than normal above the ball and if you do the check by raising the trailer it comes off the hitch. I killed my wife's transmission by not performing that check and having that issue.
WELL DONE BUT IF YOU ARE TAKING THE TIME TO DO THIS VIDEO YOU SHOULD PROBABLY TAKE THE TIME TO PROOF READ YOUR INSTRUCTIONS. RUNNING HAS THREE Ns NOT TWO.

A very cute girl hook up A heavy trailer ! Really very interesting DIY !
Doesn’t seem safe to run a cord through the safety pin. I don’t want anything pulling that pin out.
It won't hurt anything. The cord would come on hooked long before it pops out that pin.
@@ElectronicsForFun Common sense says that idea is dumb. That pin should not be messed with period.
@@timmoore6656 they're not really messing with the pin they're just running the cable through the clip on the pin so it doesn't drag. those particular home depot trailers have very long cables that tend to drag on the ground and I always have to fix them because idiots just let them drag on the ground until there is nothing left. this is not dangerous, that cable won't undo that clip and even if it does it's not the end of the world, that pin isn't what holds the coupler on the ball.
@@ElectronicsForFun The pin is what keeps the latch from being undone. That’s why it’s there. A better option would be to run a zip tie to hold the cable.
@@timmoore6656 no the pin is a safety for that. Lots of people don't even use pins at all. That personally isn't something I would do, but the pin won't come out from running the cable through the latch.

European trailers are so much faster to do but each to their own!
Can trailer be attached to cars?
People do it but no, you shouldn't hook a trailer to a car. Cars aren't built for towing, it's not safe. Your brakes and suspension aren't made for that kind of load and you run the risk of burning up your transmission.
The music is awesome who is that?
Never mind I found it in the description!
Wow, top notch!

Most likely.
You can twist the chains so there is less slack so they don’t drag
Never twist the chains. You are creating what is called a Kink. If the trailer ever let go from the lead, the chain would stretch and allow for more damage and the possibility of the trailer flipping. Always get a professional Like Best Trailers to set up your chains for you if you are unable to. They obviously have the knowledge to know, what you ned, so you can pull a trailer safely.
@@canadiantimberwolf1 NHTSA guidelines require that you take up as much slack in the chains as possible, by twisting them. In the event of a decoupling, the chains will actually catch the tongue of the trailer before it hits the ground, in a properly installed, and applied system. Twisting a chain does not weaken it. "kinking" it as you say, means there's a REALLY excessive amount of length that needs to be taken up. In this case, you need to get the proper length chains installed.
@@ihatejustin500 Okay, Your American and I am Canadian, and the Rules can be different. I drive a Dump Truck with a Pony on the rear. And the H.T.A or Highways Traffic Act here in Ontario say, NO they can not be twisted, and MUST be fitted to proper length. You can however, use a bungee cord to hold the chains off the road. I also read that a mild twist is okay as long as the Links DO NOT overlap. Disconnecting of the trailer and car or pick up with chains overly twisted causes kinks and they can snap under that kind of strain with bad results...
@@canadiantimberwolf1 twisting them is not ideal but twisted chains are a lot safer than loose chains. Loose chains are worthless, but twisted chains will still get the job done while not as reliably as properly tensioned chains. And no the chain would not stretch, steel is not elastic. And a twisted chain wouldn't be under enough tension to lift your trailer off the ground and flip it over, even if it was the chain would break before it flipped a trailer.
@@ElectronicsForFun you have some learning to do.
Let me know if you ever lose a trailer and the outcome...
