Hey friends - here's a new lesson where I teach you how to play Willin' by Little Feat (1972). Half of this song is a rather straightforward key-of-G acoustic classic rock, while the intro & verse utilize chord shapes similar to what you heard in Blackbird to create a distinctive "open" sound. Learning these together can be tricky at times, but rewarding!
In my video, I break everything down step by step, in this order:
- 0:00 Lesson overview
- 1:44 Chord shapes needed
- 9:44 Strumming pattern
- 12:01 Intro riff (step by step)
- 18:15 Verse, pre-chorus & chorus
- 26:03 Full playthrough

Thanks for watching everyone! Hope this helps. Enjoy the song.
Man, Little Feat was great .
I still listen to real southern rock everyday
Nothing better 👍👍
Best instruction I have found on RUclips for this!
Yeah, but the recording is in open G tuning
I have been searching for how to play this song for years and finally gave up. This popped up in my feed this morning and I couldn't believe it! Thank you for producing a clear and well explained video on this classic song. Much appreciated!
Oh man, that makes me glad to hear! so happy it was helpful
I bought the printout - very happy with my decision. Great job, thanks David
Thanks David - great song , great lesson, the closest i've found
By far the best tutorial for Willin. I really like the way the tabs and chords are inserted into your video. Just a great job thanks
Hadn't heard till the past two weeks? Wow guy, where have you been? This is an all time great road song.
I've actually been through Tucumcari New Mexico in my own travels, lovely city.
(no I don't drive big rigs, I just love the open road, love to travel)
Tucumcari is not a lovely city. It is another roadside attraction with concrete tepees
Happy to say, this summer we drove from Austin to San Diego, and I saw signs for at least one (maybe 2?) of the cities from this song! was excited
Perfect song perfect lesson! Thank you!
Superb way of a tutorial. Hats off to you David... this is one of best ways..👍👍👍
Thanks Joe!
How are you playing the guitar and flipping through the notes at the same time you are a Legend
Excellent!!! Thank you!
Thank you for all your effort, David Potts.
Luv this tune.
Sorry,made a misprint.
Thanks for this lesson. One of my favourite bands/songs. Now I can play it! Cheers 👍😎👌
Thank god, I finally understand how to play this song!
I used to play this song in drop D. But this option is a great one. Well done
Thank you! I love this song! 💕
Amazing tutorial. Thank you
Thank you, cool tune great lesson!
Great lesson, thanks 👍
Good presentation and explanation.
Great song, always love it on guitar ! Nice job !! Thanks.
sure thing!
Great lesson thank you
Good analysis and lesson
Thanks for sharing!!! Linda Ronstadt tagged when will I be loved with willin too.
you're very welcome!
Good lesson, David! I just heard the Little Feat version this week myself, although I’ve heard Linda Ronstadt’s version a thousand times. I love open G and tried a few lessons in that tuning, your lesson makes a lot more sense and is easier to learn. Thanks for your work!
thanks Jeff!
Fun tune Thanks 👍👏👏✌🏻🆒
sure thing, you're quite welcome!
Thanks for posting this David. I'm an intermediate player and could never get the timing of this down until I carefully went thru your lesson. The genius of the great Lowell George was his ability to make somewhat complicated compositions sound simple.
Nice, hope this helped John! Man, I guess I need to check out more of his music!
I guess the biggest question I have is, how had you never heard this song before, until recently? But thanks for the breakdown, great lesson.
Excellent breakdown - just one observation. On the CDC tag at the end of each verse line I believe the D is on the third beat but your tab places it on the 'and' before the third beat. And when I watch you demonstrate it and I count along with the video it seems to me you are playing it on beat 3, as I believe Little Feat do on the original recording. Am I wrong, or is the tab wrong?
This is one of my favorite songs! Too bad Dixie Chicken isn't really a guitar song as it's also one of my favorites. Thanks!
You're quite welcome!

The intro chords are the same as Peter Frampton's song "Baby I Love Your Way". Frampton said in an interview that he wanted to imitate the blackbird sound of beetles. On the other hand, I saw this song Little Feat covered by Reina del Cid she call now Elle ( ruclips.net/video/uBDhdugf_bY/видео.html ) and since then I have been looking for the tutorial to do it, but since I know Framton's I already know where the music is going. Greetings and thanks for the tutorial from Venezuela.
👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻
thanks Susan!
Hey can i request a song? Could you do greatest day by Take That? Thanks
hi - you surely can request! Don't know that one but I'll give it a spin!
Place names spelled wrong. Check your atlas/maps
You just heard it? Have you been stoned the last 40 years? Here’s another fun fact. It’s in open G.
Better late than never! Hopefully my list of shame (of classic songs I haven't heard) doesn't have too much left on it
@@songnotes Go to the album "Little Feat". The original and best version, IMO. Just acoustic and slide with vocals.
