- Hauntingly beautiful rendition of Little Feat's Willin' that I recorded at Red Rocks 3 years ago. Tom dedicates this to Lowell George the singer/songwriter who composed this beautiful song. Sadly, Lowell George passed away from a heart attack in 1979. A poignant tribute from the great Tom Petty and one of my favorite performances by TPATH. I love this recording as you see the true respect and love the members of the band have for each other as they play. Heartbreaking that we will never see this again.

As a trucker for 30 years now this is the first song on my seriously long set of Tom Petty songs that I play every day and night while trying to dodge all you crazy 4wheelers(cars)on the big road day and night. Every word Tom sings resonates with us veteran long haulers.. Rip Tom and Lowell .
Linda Ronstadt also does a great version of this song. At one of her live performances she admits to falling in love with Lowell George, for about a week, until she found out he was married. Lowell's wife showed up at her front porch!

I've heard at least a dozen different bands perform this song, and I know it is Lowell George 's song but the 1 singer who made it sound Great is Linda Ronstadt!!. I mean she really kills it. Just had to say that. Its a great song and absolutely, the writer should Always get credited for it. So tip my hat to Lowell George for sure!!.

I miss Tom Petty…a lot.
Tom says "there used to be a band called Little Feat ..." While this is true enough, the band still exists and performs (minus Lowell and drummer Richie Hayward, but with all members in the band that reformed in 1972). Just sayin'
In the early 2000s, Little Feat guitarist Fred Tackett (roommate of Lowell and co-author of some Feat songs and a studio contributor on others, though never an official member of the band until its 1989 reformation) had a release party for his first solo album at the Canyon Club in Agoura, California. Benmont and Mike Campbell were there and performed as the opening act. The connection(s) were more than respectful ... they were based on friendship. This is a very very good tribute to LF and Tom could have worked it into his regular repertoire without problem. Thanks for posting this.

@Ian Harding Hi Ian. That was many moons ago, and I was at the Negril show, as well. I didn't go the first year (at Melia Braco) but learned my lesson and returned in the second. I was at the one earlier this year, as well ... ironically, we went back to Melia Braco and the guests were Los Lobos, the Midnight Ramgle Band, Anders Osborne and Vince Herman. We paid tribute to Paul Barrere with a Second Line on the beach. He responded -- the next day there was a 6.2 earthquake off the coast of Negril!
Great band (The Heart Breakers) doing this Lowell George tune. Listen for the magic in the last 1.5 minute(ish)when less becomes more and another great band, the Band, echoes.

I love Tom Petty but I would much rather hear Lowell do the song with Little Feat. Damn shame that can't happen anymore happen anymore.😢
everybody agrees Tom and Mike are key to the heartbreakers. but we need to give some love to Benmont Tench. He nails Billy Paine's part in this song. And is essential to the heartbreakers sound and countless of other projects. Just saying.
