Teaching the phrasing by voicing out the Rhythm was such a brilliant way to pass on your hard-earned skills, greatly appreciated, beautiful guitar part superbly played !
My mother had her PhD in musicology from McGill University. She was a pianist for the BSO in 1972-74. I was in her belly under the piano listening to Mozart and Chopin. As a child, I listened 100x to my favorite 45LP "Peter and the Wolf" over and over and over...She would take me to Sunday rehearsals at Symphony Hall where I'd eat my PBnJ and annoy the sound guys upstairs 🤣..or run around backstage. I've been a Pro musician now for 20 years. I didnt understand at first WHY I could just pick up one of my instruments and play a tune I heard...almost immediately. I don't have "perfect pitch" but its damn close!! I attribute this to my upbringing, going to chamber music parties at 10 years old, and University student musicians coming to our apartment playing guitar, cello, violin...One time, I asked all of them to play Tchaikovsky (sp) "Peter"..and they DID!! A 6 year olds dream team!! 8 musicians playing just for ME!! 😃
Playing guitar a long time and honestly believe this is one of the most informative and helpful lessons out there. I don't mean for hotel California which it is but in general. Very valuable information for anybody learning or stuck in a rut. Love the honesty as well and highlights the fact that you don't have to have a degree in music theory to be an excellent guitar player or any instrument. Great way of putting across the information and proper down to earth lesson. Keep it up 👍
Learning harmony (music theory) is essential if you want to play along with a singer or other musicians, and if you want to write your own material and not take as long as Leonard Cohen (5 years to write Hallelujah). It doesn’t mean you have to learn to read scores (notation), and for the intimidated, it is not rocket science. It is easy, and pays dividends.
Thanks for clearing the notes. All the while I was playing this in.. Bm (7th fret), F# (6th fret), A(5th fret), E (4th fret), G (3rd fret) D(2nd fret), Em, F# (2nd fret) Bm (2nd fret). Regards.
Thanks rob. Ive dabbled with acoustic over 40 years but am a Strat man for the most. I recently bought an Epiphone J45 and this tutorial is fabulous. Sound perfectly correct. Thanks for the chart too. The inspiration a new guitar gives you is beyond words.
Respect. I am a casual player and just play when I am just by myself. I learnt just for myself and when you said no one cares as long as it sounds good, I couldn't help but admire you sir. Thank you.
You are a brave man Sir. The copyright holders for The Eagles have a huge team of people looking to strike channels for "infringement". Honestly, I don't even play their stuff alone to my cat for fear of getting struck down.
Thank you so much! I’m a 66 year old man (just retired) and have never played any musical instrument. With your FREE chord charts (idiot proof), maybe I can figure out how to play this beautiful song.
This is Don Felders guitar part, it’s all the guitar parts put together that really make this one of the all time great compositions, Glen fry played 6 string acoustic with a capo at the 2nd fret starting on Am, there is probably 4 or 5 different guitar parts on the actual record, Great Lesson, just shows how much ahead of the game musicians were compared to now … Great Stuff ⭐️👍🏻🎸🌞
Thank you so much! Your teaching is soooooo clear and helpful. I've never found a teacher who explains in such a clear way. Talking about phrasing seems so vital and I get it! Thank you so, so much.
I have a cheap Martin acoustic in my closet I have not played for several years. I have to say your teaching style is in my view, excellent. I may just take it out, change the strings and give it another go. Thank you
In India, teachers verbally teach the phrasings or rhythms or chords or pretty much everything. Then they demonstrate it by playing while verbally teaching. It’s always effective in memorising and mapping your way through your instruments. I guess teachers are the same everywhere. Great stuff ❤
So true what you say about making the song your own and not overthinking every note. It's a classic song and I remember going out to buy the album but funnily enough my favourite song from the album was "Wasted Time" which for me is even better, but then I like miserable depressing lyrics 😂 Great work Rob keep going I'm really enjoying the channel. 👍
class. thanks for this, mistakes and all - makes it easy to follow and not as intimidating as all the other YT tutorials. Great to listen too and practice with.
Well done! I learned this a couple of years ago and truth be told, I've never actually done it exactly the same two times in a row. But no one notices!!
Dear Rob I think you're great! Cheers! You're a brilliant guitar player and your RUclips tutorial on Don Felder's classic is my absolute favorite, thanks! 👍 🎸 🇨🇦
Every great teacher says: play by ear! (I have to nag one tiny bit about the sus-chord: it's more than just "taking of the second finger", it's "asking for the chord to resolve into major again") Thanks a lot!
D or Dsus2 what does it mean don’t know don’t care the audience don’t care - love it! If you’re based anywhere near Liverpool check out the Florrie & what is happening St George’s Hall 6 Dec 23 get on it!!!
By chance, this afternoon I was playing this song my own way with my 12-string guitar. I discovered your channel through the excellent intro of 'The Cinema Show' by Genesis and I'm a regular and loyal follower ever since. I appreciate your remarkable musical ear, and while I missed the classic notation phrasing of a sheet music..., now I know that with you, I'll have to memorize a lot. To the point! If I understood you correctly, you suggest that we ask for songs, and in that case, I would implore you, if it's within your power, to make a 'stupid proof' tutorial of 'I'll See You in My Dreams' from the Travis or Atkins version, which I can't to play, no matter how hard I try. Excellent tutorial, with very good advice. Thank you very much, Rob.
I've done a uke tutorial of 'I'll See You In My Dreams' including all the paperwork (Joe Brown's version) but I'll check out the guitar version you mentioned.
Hi! What a great and pleasant surprise a real-time conversation with you, Rob! I've seen your ukulele tutorials, but I'm only interested in the guitar versions, particularly the one by Merle Travis. I've been working on the necessary technique for a long time, and "I'll see you in my dreams" would be my next challenge, goal, or endeavor. And I know that with a tutorial from you, it would be impossible to fail. Right now, I'm getting ready to "grease the machine" with your two tutorials for "Never Going Back Again" and "Everybody's Talking At Me - (Midnight Cowboy)", which are coming along very well thanks to your instructions. A hug from Spain, and thank you very, very much for everything.
I think that you hear more notes on the record because they have an effect on the guitar. I doubt he would change it that much when he plays it live now because the picking patter would still be based on his technique, how he learned to play like that.
Well Rob if you can smell smoke its my guitar I set fire to. I been playing for a few years but can i get this note sequence into my tiny brain 😢 Something to do over Christmas then, I will master this if it's the last thing I do . Great tuition lots of fun 😊
This is wonderful, like all your tutorials. Is there any chance of a lesson for the remainder of Hotel California? that may be atoo tall order - Im pretty naive, just started playing 2 years ago.
Hi Rob, you have to be the best tuition site by far. I've finally learned to play HC intro properly as well as a few other pieces you've done! Would like to ask if there is any possibility of doing The Good the Bad and the Ugly with your "idiot proof" charts having to try and follow the other tutorials on here with stop start stop start takes the fun out of it! Please help!!!s Best regards and keep up the good work!
All the tabs show this in standard tuning, without the capo, but you are playing it in the same key with the capo on the 7th which sounds so much better. Great video.
Good tute - i actually watched and listened (and did the du-du-du’s) through the whole thing! May i borrow your 12-string for a few months whilst i work it out?
Thank you very much for that introduction to hotel California. I play guitar but not to perfection. I like your humour and the way you explained it. Why do you play in down the neck? I myself do not like Capo. But was just wondering why not the Original way? Thank you again.
D sus 2 is D suspended 2. A chord is 1-3-5. D chord is D-F#-A. The D sus 2 would add the second note, E. So D sus 2 is D-E-A. Just think of the D scale: D E F# G A B C# D which represents 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 or octave. There are two suspended chords, D suspended 2 & D suspended 4. In Pinball Wizard, Pete Townsend his B major to B suspended 4.
Sorry but you’re wrong. Watch Don Felder on his twin neck. He’s playing 12 string main melody up at the 7th. Glen Frey is capo 2. Nowadays Don plays it capo 5 as it’s easier to sing. 👍🏻
how do you feel about doing "thank you" from Hall and Oates album Whole Oates? bloody lovely mellow song. one of my favorites. No one seems to like or care for it in you tube land.
In a video I watched Don Felder has his guitar cap on the 5th fret playing this. Is his guitar tuned down a whole step or is he playing it different than you?
Felder lowered the key by 2 frets so he could sing it when he played live; He plays it in Am. The original on the record is in Bm and sung by Don Henley. My version is the one everyone knows, the one on the record. Just move the capo 2 frets lower if you want to play it like Felder does today. Everything else is the same. 👍🏻
Teaching the phrasing by voicing out the Rhythm was such a brilliant way to pass on your hard-earned skills, greatly appreciated, beautiful guitar part superbly played !
I've been playing since 1964 and this is some of the best tuition I've seen on RUclips. Take a bow Rob.
My mother had her PhD in musicology from McGill University. She was a pianist for the BSO in 1972-74. I was in her belly under the piano listening to Mozart and Chopin. As a child, I listened 100x to my favorite 45LP

Cool story, bro.
Appreciate the self reflection
Oh excuse me. I didn't realize this was a clip about you ! Wtf

You’re the only teacher online that I’ve found that actually feels like it’s not online and it’s a one to one 👍🏻👏🏻
Thanks rob. Ive dabbled with acoustic over 40 years but am a Strat man for the most. I recently bought an Epiphone J45 and this tutorial is fabulous. Sound perfectly correct. Thanks for the chart too. The inspiration a new guitar gives you is beyond words.
Thanks for your time on these videos. I can connect to your teaching better than anyone I've found.
Respect. I am a casual player and just play when I am just by myself. I learnt just for myself and when you said no one cares as long as it sounds good, I couldn't help but admire you sir. Thank you.
Learnt ? There’s no such word! 😳😳😳
@@JohnGriffith-w2wLearnt is actually the dictionary accurate one. Learned is used often informally and is acceptable.
You are a FANTASTIC Artist, Musician, and Guitarist! Love your lessons and playing! THANK YOU ROB! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🙏😇🙏

You are a brave man Sir. The copyright holders for The Eagles have a huge team of people looking to strike channels for "infringement". Honestly, I don't even play their stuff alone to my cat for fear of getting struck down.
I’ve had no issues so far, probably as I’m only playing the chord sequence without the vocal melody (the song). 👍

I heard there were twelve different guitars on the recording; probably an Urban Legend.
@@theyoungupstarts1243 Who knows maybe there was, them guys from that era wrote the book on guitar parts.⭐️👍🏻
Beautiful sounding guitar.

I love the way you teach mate
What a breath of fresh air you are! Brilliant!!!
Rob it sounds great on the 12 string thanks.

Thank you for sharing your talent, keeping it straight forward and understandable 💯👍
You are awesome, thank you! I'm learning this song and your tutorial was excellent.
Finally someone playing the song properly! Great stuff !
You got Talent Brother, Thanks for the great song.
I just found your channel. Im so excited to learn this. Thank you.
Fantastic lesson. Best I've seen on RUclips if any song. Thanks!
Brilliant way of teaching: hum/sing it while you're playing....
I never looked up the chords and started playing by ear. I do G,D,C,B7 on repeat all the time. It's good enough to play at the fire and sing along.
Thank you so much for the lesson! I’ve had the cords down for some time, but lacked the picking patterns. You’ve nailed it! 👍

Thanks
What a wonderful tutorial video. Thanks Rob!!!
Love your videos!! Thank you for these.
Fantastic tutorial! Helped me a lot with the phrasing
Funny thing about art...It's always different than it was the first time. But you nailed that Picasso. You sound great.
class. thanks for this, mistakes and all - makes it easy to follow and not as intimidating as all the other YT tutorials. Great to listen too and practice with.
Great video. Love your honesty. Brilliant, brilliant brilliant. 👍
Thanks Rob, always a pleasure listening to your simple explanations and exquisite playing! Not many RUclipsrs come across as humble as you do!👍

Don Felder himself actually explains exactly how to play it, on YT. You are correct, the phrasing and feel are the bedrock of good music.
Rob's strumming might be the hardest part for me, I prefer to finger pick the song , Excellent tudor session thank you so much, Rob.
