Tim Talks To The Trees

  • Trees as toys? Well, Tim has quite a few tree-themed toys in his collection.
First up, a magical illustration of an alternative Noah's Ark, where it is the trees that are being rescued. Tim bought this in Germany in about 1991, and it has been hanging on his wall ever since.
An animated picture in a frame. Keep very quiet, and a number of shy forest animals appear from behind the trees. The slightest sound and they all disappear again!
Tree Tops is a set of three spinning tops, each in the shape of a tree. Made in Austria.
An unusual French toy next. It consists of a wooden box, and on the top there is the stump of a tree and a hare is leaning on the stump. Tim likes to imagine that the tree stump is telling the hare about its glory days, when it was a tall tree. Open the box and there is a night scene with moon and stars, and the tree standing tall, with an owl on one of its branches. Happy days... or maybe I should say happy nights! Whimsical nostalgia...
A tiny desert island with two pam trees and a figure of a man. Is he waiting to be rescued. Is it just decorative? No, it is a pen holder. Each palm tree lifts out and is actually a biro.
Tim visited San Francisco for the first time about 40 years ago. And just across the Golden Gate Bridge is Muir Woods, with gigantic redwood trees. Tim bought a postcard there that contains a seed that you can plant... wait for 2,000 years or so... and you will have your own redwood tree!
A dexterity puzzle with a Christmas Tree theme.
A plant pot with something green poking out of the top. The label says Greenus Soxus. Pull and a pair of green gardener's socks appear - just ready for a bit of tree planting!
Finally, an extraordinary toy from France. You place a number of marbles on a ramp in the tree, and then gently tilt the figure of the farmer at the base of the tree slightly forwards. This causes a marble to be released from the ramp, and it rolls down and it caught in the little basket the farmer is holding. This causes him to tip forward, so the marble is directed towards an area at the base where the marbles are held, and at the same time, because the marble has caused the farmer to tip forwards, the next marble is released, and so on, until all the apples are safely gathered in. Charming!

Tim bought it about 10 years ago, so I am not sure it is still available. 'KIKKERLAND Woodlands Diorama Scene' or 'Woodland moving picture by Kikkerland' are search terms that will find it, but mostly you will just see pictures of it on Pinterest. Might find one on eBay?

I love the Austrian tree top toy.. The Noah's Sisters Ark is nightmarish, I think, as the only circumstance under which one would see such a thing in life would be if one were marooned at sea and hallucinating from dehydration and hunger, possibly topped off with a nice dose of overexposure to the sun..I can well imagine such a rapid eye movement bad dream.. The 3d animal/forest number would be better if the animals each had a ball bearing in the base, and just buggered about randomly among the trees.. The single movement here would pall quickly in the eyes of a child perhaps.. A lovely and enchanting set of toys though! I love the trees theme. 👌🌟👍
