I lived in Northern VA from 2011 - 2015. I remember walking across the street to my local ABC Store in Herndon and buying Eagle Rare for $27. Times were good back then.
Hi David, our system in Ontario is very similar to your State including the online portion. One thing different is the allocated stuff- here you get notice of a drop, usually 1 bottle limits and you try to buy via lottery. If you're a lucky winner you pay online and the bottle is shipped to your store. I've become a big fan of online buying (if the item isn'tin stock at my store), it saves wear and tear on your vehicle (and you), usually the product arrives to your store within three business days and the shipping is free if over $50. I'm currently awaiting Rare Breed and 12 year Bunnahabhain to arrive. Cheers, love the vids!
David, I wanted to thank you and Jamie for introducing me to some really good bourbons. Also, for opening my eyes up to exploring new things outside of my comfort zone. I have found some really good ones I would have never tried before I started watching your channels. My latest favorite is Nine Banded. Picked up a single barrel 5 yr. coming in at 116 proof. Oh, so good.
Here in GA it's being somewhere at the right time or knowing someone. Usually if you find something allocated it's usually going to be marked up to a ridiculous price. Alot of stores here are basically flippers with a liquor license.
Great video David. . .very insightful. I've always wondered how the state-controlled system works so thanks for the education. I can get most of the bottles I saw here in Rhode Island, but I was really envious to see the Cooper's Craft 100 bottles sitting there. I'd love to be able to get that here but was lucky to grab one while in Florida. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
I’ve only recently got into bourbon as a hobby but I’ve noticed how crazy inventories are state to state. Like I can go buy 10 bottles of Coopers Craft 100 5 minutes from my house in Ohio. But good luck ever finding some other brands except if you wait in line for a few hours before the stores even open.
Great review. I'm located near Smithfield, VA, but I'm primarily a tequila and bourbon drinker. I continually track tequila costs across several online stores in addition to the VABC. Rarely will VABC provide the lowest price in tequilas. And, the VABC selection is so paltry that I opt to buy online and pay shipping. Virginia could do better by getting out of the 'commercial' sector business and leave it up to private industry. Salud.
The good thing about the ABC system in Virginia is if you get to find an allocated bottle, it is at MSRP. I also learned that we could order things like the other 5 Benchmark products not available here-but you must order an entire case. I'm not gonna order a case of something I haven't tried yet.
You were sadly mistaken at 9:10 when you said "...Clyde May's...nothing to get excited about." The Alabama Style (yellow label) and the rye are both excellent.
I have found VA VABC stores vary greatly! I have found vast differences in what is stock especially in northern VA. For example vast differences between McLean, Falls Church, and Arlington. I live near Winchester VA and there are differences between Winchester and Front Royal too.
I appreciate our system here in VA. Yeah, it might not be exciting but I can routinely find really good bottles (KC120, OF1920, JD SiB BP, WT RB) at or near MSRP. No scheme will be perfect.... but I think we have a pretty good thing going. If I want to find something special, I can play my luck over in DC and MD. I would like to see VA ABC doing more picks, though. With their buying power they should be able to open a lot of doors. Oh, since you mentioned being unfamiliar with it.... the KO Cask Strength SiB High Rye Bourbon is a BUY all-day long. Would definitely recommend!
I appreciated this, mostly because anyone living in this state and interested in bourbon knows it’s basically a joke to walk into an ABC expecting to find a gem, also for those parroting “it’s at mrsp”…uhh no, go look at the pricing calculator for each quarter. You can definite see bottles like calumet 16 at much higher prices here than msrp. But channels like this, even though I enjoy them are propped up by free out of state gifts being sent to them or their contacts, or trips to other regions. If he made content exclusively around ABC inventory, it’d be a short list
Alabama is also state run, this past Saturday was our allocation day. I scored 6 Bottles, 2 Old Forester Single Barrel/Barrel Strength store picks. I was very happy about that. I have also been looking for Journeyman Corsets Whips & Cask Strength but haven't seen it (looking forward to a review). I'm going out of town this weekend so I will be making some stops, hopefully I will grab some things I have been wanting.
The VABC Stranahans pick was good, haven’t tried other Stranahans yet. Despite its faults I do like VABCs methods. It allowed me to get Blantons, ER, BT, and a few others that I would have had to pay double or more for in MD or DC.
Glad you did this one. You were on point with wording how all the stores are basically the same but if you have a premier store near by it is worth stopping at (there's 5 around the state). Working full time for ABC has perks but being a bourbon drinker doesn't help my case and I've always got my gripes
I hit the last drop at my local store and got a JD 12 year. They had to start doing it this way because people were waiting in line on truck days and taking all the bottles. That meant that people with jobs that are 9-5 could not get allocated products.
Yep being a Virginian myself, I’ve noticed some stores have different items but it is largely the same across the board which makes it less fun overall.
I really appreciate VA ABC because it helps to keep prices in check within the Commonwealth of VA. I also have the pleasure of being able to shop at military exchanges which are exempted from the VA ABC regulations. 👍🏽🥃
I go back and forth on the Virginia system. Price wise it is better than most other states, selection wise it is worse than most other states. I find one thing super frustrating, allocated drops are way too Buffalo Trace product focused. Also, regular Buffalo Trace bourbon should not be an allocated thing and always is.
Very different process in my state. Its all about connections, friends and right place right time. In my experience outside control states, knowing good people and being generous with your whiskey gets the best results. Obviously that varies though.
dude, you didn't mention the JD single barrel barrel proof. best bottle i saw on the shelf. gold label, square bottle. we are lucky in VA to see it available semi regularly. $70 all day. good call on the Knob 120 black label though! keep up the good work!
Yup 👍classic VA ABC, nothing bad but nothing insanely good, only got into bourbon earlier this year and I’m pleased with the stuff I’ve acquired through VA ABC so far🤙
We were there for a hockey tourney in Feb and I was underwhelmed with the selection at the ABC stores. You think when you go to another state you’re gonna find some amazing stuff you’ve never seen before. I did grab a few of those Coopers 100s. $35 for a good pour that we can’t get in NYS. Awesome info and vid. Cheers guys!!!
I'm in NC about 10 minutes south of the VA border. Have 3 VA ABCs within a half hour drive. I tend to do slightly better at the VA ABCs then the ones in NC. At least VA notifies you when they drop allocated, so you can make the mad dash to the store. In NC it's all luck.
GREAT VIDEO, its hard to explain our stores here in VA to people from outside the area......some things I like about our ABC store system but traveling to other states, its definitely some draw backs.
At least you have a chance to buy stuff at close to retail. Down in TX, if you find it, it's going to be well over MSRP. And the big box stores will sell out instantly if you dont get their in the morning during the week day. Unicorns, you can forget about it.
Man, that is depressingly similar to our ABC stores in NC. The one thing I didn't see in yours was any Redwood Empire products. We do get some of those here.
Just like NC. My county Guilford doesn't even have a drop date that's available to public. Just guess on the day the truck comes and hope to get lucky lol.
I have a Laws Barrel Proof store pick from TW and loved it so much I went back to get another. It has a very distinctive earthy flavor that I enjoy but might not be for everyone.
I really like KO distillery. Definitely worth the trek to Manassas if you get a chance. Had to go to the Bowman distillery to get some John J Bowman. Limit 1 per person. Probably not that far for you since are near Stafford.
I think you are sleeping on the JDSBBS gold label on the top shelf. That stuff flies off the shelf here in Ohio. One of my favorite non-allocated bottles.
I'm picking up my first bottle of the Journeyman Corsets, Whips and Whiskey and a Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend on Saturday. I'd love to see you review on the JCWW. I wish we could get John J Bowman out here in the Pacific Northwest. We see the Bowman Brothers (love it!) and Isaac Bowman Port Finish but not the other. Great video!
@Benjamin Robinson have you tried it yet? I keep wanting to buy that bottle but never could pull the trigger. I look at it like I could get a bottle of Rare Breed for 45-50, a bottle of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked(or OF 1910 or 1920) for 55-60, a Bakers 7 for 55-60, an Elijah Craig for Old Fashionds for 25-30 and a WT101 for mixed drinks for 20-25 for that 200. I'm sure it's better than all those but the ones I mentioned are pretty good
@@byoregon1 I don't think that the stores independently pick them, as they're just labeled "The Virginia ABC" on the bottles, although they might just be using shorthand.
@@FakingANerve Interesting. Here in Oregon (also a controlled state), I’ve been seeing more and more store picks. The store owners do the picking and they get all the bottles. Except for the Virginia home brands I didn't a reason to make a special trip there for juice that I can't find here in Ohio or a 100+ mile field trip to Kentucky. I guess Virginia's NOT for lovers...at least bourbon lovers! 🥃
That Corsets...is a bit of an intense wheater (all wheat isn't it?) that I got last year. A delish change of pace but may be a challenge for those corn bourbon loving folks. Cheers!
