Traffic Scare and Pop-Up IFR Flight from Lake House

- We had a blast at our friends lake house in Wisconsin but it was time to get back. Jaime and I depart from Portage (C47) VFR, we got a little closer than we usually prefer with traffic (a Mooney) and then got a pop-up IFR clearance from air traffic control because the weather was worse than forecast. Hope ya'll enjoy it.

Agreed, flight following is always an excellent option even when the airplane is outfitted with collision avoidance . The ski boat / pontoon boat is best of both worlds. Living in Florida for decades, I would have frozen in that Wisconsin lake . Noticed your " Killington shirt, skied those slopes many times. Love your 310 !!
Very nice video. Excellent shots both at the lake and airborne. The 310 cockpit has good forward visibility --better than many a jetliner... Also loved the smooth engine noise, buzzing reassuringly in the background. Thank you and saludos from Uruguay.

Kevin and Jamie, I wanted to thank you for your post and videos, my checkride is at the end of October. From watching you two, I’ve really been able to get tips on how to communicate on the radios. At first I was so intimidated, I’m now way more comfortable. Have used and love VfR flight following, wouldn’t have been so easy without learning the lingo from you two. Really well put together video ! Flight scenery was awesome i think it looks so cool looking forward with two propellers spin around on each side hence the twin engines. Great videos Kevin (great name as well!), keep up the good work. Reminds me of flying as a front seat passenger in a 310 in southern Africa in the 1980s. Of course our navigation aids were more basic back then, paper map and mark one eyeball. At times we were out of range of any navigation beacons so had to totally rely on recognising landmarks - in particular the Zambezi River. Good times...

The boss flew some of the employees to a fishing trip in his plane(Dollar Ninety Eight was its name). Anyway at some point in the flight ATC calls and says expect to crash at a certain point! I was in the copilot seat and I bet the pilot really got a kick out of my expression on my face. He said don’t worry we just have another plane crossing or path. I looked for that plane for 30 minutes. Love your trips Kevin!

Traffic event with the Mooney seems much like a simulator training event. Love the hangar, wish mine was as nice! I took notes on the ending Avidyne request....
I'm long retired from the cockpit but I sure enjoy being able to ride along. It's just like the good old days when I was younger. My heart will always be in the clouds. :)

I got COMPLETELY psyched when I saw that Avidyne PFD! Hopefully before too long we'll be getting some kind of announcement!
My brother-in-law and I have been discussing the idea of a shared aircraft for over a year, and I'd love to be able to install a full Avidyne system just like you were describing.
I was looking around, and it actually looks remarkably like the Avidyne Entegra R9 was supposed to look, except you can see that it has different buttons and a slightly different layout. Definitely hope this is going to be a new product! I know they partnered with BendixKing who rebrands the IFD series under "AeroNav", but I haven't really heard much about that since then.
Me too! I don't usually add content like that but as I was editing this video I had seen that from my Dad and couldn't resist. Perfect timing with my engine monitor and some of my engine gauges getting wonky. Considering how intuitive/vibrant/solid the IFD's are, I'm guessing this thing will smoke the competition. :)
@@310Pilot I asked Baron Pilot about this since he's toured their factory before and knows some people there, and he said the response was "We have nothing to announce at this time."

Nice job! Dealing with that loony traffic and weather is a little stressful.
South of Portage as you overflew the power plant, you flew over our farm. That was kinda cool. When I saw the greenish brown stained water when the girls jumped in, I said to myself; that looks like the Wisconsin River! Then when you called out Portage the next morning, I laughed out loud!
