A great tip I got was to daily, scrub you toilet bowI, just with the brush. I do this in the morning every day after I use the toilet. This takes all of 10 seconds to scrub up under the entire rim and in the bowl (you are in there anyway). By doing this daily, your weekly clean goes very quickly and you consume far less cleaning fluid.

Those little habits of cleaning the sink when you're done or putting a towel away fall into the 1 minute rule. If something will take me under a minute to do, I do it right then. Because 1 minute is a negligible amount of time plus if left it will take longer to do later.

OMG! Krist Yu, You made my day. You gave this very busy woman many new, fresh ideas--and old reminders! I am ordering a few items that you suggested. I have been looking at Marie Kondo's organizing tips, and going through her book. I need to downsize and simplify. Your ideas are both simple, aesthetically pleasing, and very doable each day. PS: I *do* make my bed every morning and hang my towels neatly after showering (patting myself on the back). I cannot wait to dig into the rest of your videos. 🙂

Growing up I was taught to just clean as I go (I.e. cleaning the sink after use, throwing away trash after it’s created etc.) and I’m forever thankful for it. I find I can quickly “deep clean” my home as often as I need without taking all day because there is never anything out of place. I can understand it being a difficult habit for one who wasn’t raised this way but that’s the biggest tip I can give anybody.

@@TM15HAKRN It's not about stress or finding faults it's about doing your part. When one lives in a house it's their responsibility to clean up after themselves, something one is taught at a small age. Nobody is saying that being obsessively clean is normal, but doing mundane and basic tasks such as putting things back where it belongs or washing dishes is something everyone should do.

I appreciate you pointing out not everyone is raised this way. I had never heard of cleaning as you go and didn’t even notice other people did it until one friend actually pointed out the reason why her house is clean all the time was that’s what she did. I then watched her cook and was blown away as she would spill and wipe it up immediately rather than waiting till the end of the cooking experience when it was dried on and more exhausting to remove. She did the same with the tools she used to cook with she didn’t wait and let them pile up in the sink she washed them as she went and even reuse the same tools and multi-tasked cooking staples for a few freezer meals so to make fewer dishes over all and save hours of time. 🤯

  • @thebeyondz
    @thebeyondz 2 года назад +3638

My biggest tip is that if you’ve been struggling with your mental health and keeping up with cleaning your space, it’s ok to take un-aesthetic and sometimes what feel like wasteful shortcuts while you work on healing. Can’t deal with piling dishes? Buy premade/frozen and/or use disposable plates. Can’t be bothered with lining up those baby bottles? Buy a bin and toss the clean ones in with reckless abandon. Anything you can do to simplify the process and create tiny victories…and let go of perfection.

It also doesn’t give that anxious feeling of having to clean and then procrastinating. No overthinking, just one or two small items. It really does wonders. This is a good video, Krist. I'm elderly so I tend to look at these tasks differently. I delight in doing most of them. When I was in college, I had a friend in a powerful job who, when stressed, like to clean his home. He said that he felt he had complete control over these little tasks, and somehow that made returning to the bigger world of work easier. As I aged, I began to understand. A friend of mine recently told me about the “broken window” system. Based on the Broken Window Theory in crime policy (fixing small things like graffiti and littering leads to a decrease in crime), you can apply it to your home too. Identify which few messy situations really make you feel bad when you see them. For me it’s kitchen counters with crumbs/debris on, dirty dishes and lumpy/crooked sofa cushions. But I don’t really care about floors being super clean or windows and mirrors not being polished, for example. So I just focus on those things that make me feel worse, and in no time the place looks great. Also KC Davies in her book “How to keep house while drowning” she talks about rather than “cleaning” which can be endless, focus on “resetting the space” in whatever way makes sense for you. I find these tips really helpful to be more *emotionally* efficient with cleaning, which is just as if not more important than being functionally efficient.

So glad to learn from you about maintaining my produce drawer. What a beautiful excellent way to think of the produce compartment as a garden since the produce is alive. Caring for and examining it every day ensures its use, helping to inspire meal planning, and to prevent a transfer of forgotten vegetables to a composting bin. So often I have forgotten to check my produce drawer and have wasted so much time, effort, and cash. This is a very valuable tip. Voila clean microwave.

Something I've done is to keep cleaning supplies in areas where they are often used instead of just one location in the house. I have spray cleaner and a roll of paper towels in the laundry room where the litter box lives. It's easy to wipe off the washer and dryer as needed and wipe around the litter box. There is also a waste basket nearby for dryer lint and used paper towels. Other cleaning supply stations are under the bathroom sink, under the kitchen sink, and in the basement near the utility sink. I'm more likely to spray and wipe if I don't have to leave the area to retrieve cleaning supplies.

It breaks up the work day and also gets those little jobs done hardly without any effort.

The cleaning cloths in the bathroom are such a good idea. For water splashes I use a piece of tissue or toilet paper to wipe up around the sink after every use and it sure makes a difference. Having designated areas for things (ie: toothpaste goes in the cup with the toothbrushes and not on the counter), and hanging clothing up or putting it in the hamper as soon as you take it off: these things keep me from losing control of the place.
I need one of those over the cabinet bins, but for now, I always lay out a piece of paper towel, or a plate, to catch scraps. Small things but they help so much.

@@kristimeyers2221 I use a Swedish dishcloth (sponge) for drying around the faucet & such. I bought a 10-pack of them almost a year ago and I think they may last me forever lol. I've only used 4 of them, which I toss in the washing machine & they come out like new.
If you try those, you'll never go back to washcloths or towels for wiping off counters, etc. I do use a towel, but only for drying hands.

Ok just another tip for those whose hair falls a lot and do not feel comfortable sticking it to the wall... My tactic is to actually roll the strands and clumps into balls in between my palms and put them somewhat aside (where I can see them but also out of my way) so that I can pick it up and throw it into a bin.
I used to do the wall tactic but found out that turning them into balls is neater and a bit easier when you take into account the slight hassle of removing it from the tiles to begin with. Hope this helps :)

I do something similar, but I just leave my hair fall around the drain. When I'm just about done in the shower, I use my foot to rub the hair in a circular motion until a ball forms and I drag it away from the drain. I usually pick it up later when it's somewhat dried and resembles a tumbleweed. 😄

    • @koalalah
      @koalalah 2 года назад +5

Omg same exact thing for me, I used to stick it to the wall, but now I just gather it in my hand and roll it into a ball and toss it up out of the shower and onto the floor, then it goes immediately into the bin. Works for me. Otherwise you're fighting to get that last elusive strand that just torments you as it moves around on the tile.
Also, similarly, with bags I have a less time consuming and less visually pleasing method which is to take the bottom, hold onto it with one hand, then with the other hand gather and wrap it aroud the bottom as though it were string or twine. It gets the air out, and then just tuck the handles into the hole and it should stay a nice little ball.

I always brush my hair before going in the shower but still have loads of shed hair to deal with either way 😆 I’m also autistic and haaaaate the feeling of a loose strand of hair stuck to my body somewhere (and I always know… worst superpower) so I feel like I spend half the time in there wrangling my shed hair, and those suckers are going straight on the wall and getting off my body.
My tactic is to wait until the end of my shower (or sometimes also at an intermediate point if the looming wall-hair is getting a bit too much), then swirl it all together into a ball (this catches almost all of the stragglers determined to live forever on the wall - just keep swirling until you catch them all… somehow I’ve made this into both a Finding Nemo and Pokemon reference), and throw it away (I’ve actually been flushing the hairballs, but this seems like not the best choice now I’m thinking about it out loud, and I probably need to get a little bathroom bin and find it a home…). Then at the end of my shower I rinse the wall down to get rid of any conditioner residue… and then I have a bonus tip! 💡
Get yourself a shower squeegee - you can either get ones that are like a big Y shape with a gap in the middle you can put over your shower head (or I’ll sometimes put it over the end of my shower bar control dial things), or flat ones that hang off the edge of the shower (which look a lot more sleek and minimalist tbh) - just make sure it’s something you can comfortably grab and use with wet hands. Right after grabbing a towel to wrap around 1. me and 2. my hair, my final shower step (after dealing with the wall-hair monster) is to get the squeegee and sluice all the water off the two tiled walls and then glass wall of my shower, then the floor, and scoot all that water into the drain (I have a walk-in shower and technically a “wet room” bathroom). It’s maybe a 30 second habit I guess, but once it becomes automatic you don’t even think about it and it’s just a thing you do when you shower. The benefit is the whole room dries out a LOOOOOT quicker than if you left it all wet, and it drastically reduces any kind of humidity/condensation/damp/mould issue in the bathroom, or in your home more generally*… plus it means you have to do dramatically less full-on *cleaning* in your shower/bathroom! Between rinsing the walls and floor (or bathtub/shower cubicle floor) and then squeegeeing them straight after, you don’t have any leftover soap/product residue, and no dried on water marks with drips/streaks/runs etc, so it’s a double bonus tip 😀
      * I should add that I live in the UK - if you live somewhere with low humidity then maybe your shower dampness is a good thing that you don’t want to get rid of quickly 😂. I lived in my previous flat for 10 years - a Victorian terrace conversion, where each original “unit” (behind one front door) was sub-divided into 4 separate flats with paper-thin dividing walls (2 upstairs, 2 downstairs), and not enough ventilation to deal with 4 separate bathrooms and kitchens, so between that and overflowing gutters full of leaves/moss/etc and insufficient building maintenance to deal with those things or repointing the mortar between the bricks in the wall or repairing the flashing to stop the torrents of rain runoff from getting in through the walls, I definitely had an issue with condensation and mould. A simple shower squeegee isn’t going to solve all those problems, but when I started doing this it definitely helped reduce the part of the issue I had any control over. I’ve lived in a flat that I own for the past 3 years, in a new building so it has none of the same problems I was dealing with before, but I’m now more motivated to take care of preventing any issues that might either be expensive to fix or deteriorate over time (and reducing necessary cleaning time/effort is always a goal) 😅 (in both my current flat and my previous one I don’t/didn’t have a window in my bathroom - just a ceiling ventilation/extractor fan)

I finally got rid of my 30-year old gas range & bought a new one. The new one, for some reason I can't figure out, splatters grease like crazy all over the place when you cook anything. I'm using the same cast iron skillets I've always used, but the grease splatter is insane.
I tried the metal screen but the grease went right through it. Even burned my arm. It's like this new range is just possessed.
I'm now using a silicone splatter screen which actually works! It eliminates the splatter, and it's pretty easy to clean.
Just in case anyone else has a splatter-crazy range like I have.

So when I use them, I just open the cabinet, use the bottle and immediately put it back in its place and close the cabinet. This way, it doesn't get all messy and I always find the product I want very fast. And I put the backups to another shelf.

Paper is the enemy in my household. I'm on top of that more than anything else because those piles accumulate quickly. I've set up a shredder near the door and immediately get rid of the junk. I battled paper piles for years and this new habit is ingrained into my routine. It's made a huge difference. Also, I've replaced cloth towels in my powder room with paper towels in a nice holder. It may not meet architectural digest standards but it's more hygienic, especially when you have guests. There are only four clean sides with cloth towels and nobody wants to be the fifth person looking for the dry spot.

I was not allowed to throw anything out, making cleaning around stuff quite frustrating. My last roommates had so much crap over every flat surface, cleaning floors, sinks, tables, and counters was impossible. And extremely stressful!

Although we have done with single use plastic bags in Canada, there are businesses who still offer to put your purchases into a bag. My favourite way to store plastic bags is to stuff them into an empty tissue box. Yes, stuff them in … surprisingly when you attempt to pull out a single bag, that is exactly what you get … one bag. The tissue boxes of bags can be piled one on top of the other if necessary. When you go grocery shopping, the tissue box fits nicely on the seat where a toddler would sit.

I also gather my hair on the shower wall and throw it away after my shower. A good tip that I use to keep my shower clean in between deep cleanings, is I keep a sponge wand with vinegar and dish soap in the wand. In the shower maybe like once a week I just use that to scrub my shower and I rinse it. It has really helped me.

A great tip is to have a squeegee in your shower, wether it’s a walk in glass door shower or tub. After you shower just push down the water drops left around it and bonus if you have a daily shower cleaner that your spray in there. This helps to keep away access moisture that can grow mold and fungus which can cause health and hygiene problems. It’ll only cost you a few bucks, only take about 3 extra minutes but it’ll save you from so many nasty and dangerous situations forming in the place where you go to get your body clean.

However, one tip that I think might benefit you and others is to help decrease hair shedding in the shower.
I always brush my hair before I wash it. If you can use a brush with the "nodules" on the pins, even better. Just remember to gently brush from the scalp to the ends and this will help avoid tangles and give your scalp a massage at the same time. Yes, I know, it makes hair go fluffy but then you're going to be washing it anyway! 😊

A tip that has really helped me stay clean and not overwhelmed is to clean 5-10 mins per day. Nothing more.
Part of the dread and overwhelm I feel is when my list of cleaning to do starts to grow as I organise my place; I’ll do one task and then pick up 1-3 along the way, which then derail me. It’s the backfiring of “if it takes less than 1 min, do it now” strategy that some books claim to be a holy grail lol.
So now, I discipline myself to do a set time of cleaning, or number of tasks and write down what I saw and want to get done for tomorrow. That way, I stay sane and my place stays clean!

Tip for hair in the shower. I bought a little plastic trash/ recycling can from the dollar store. It’s a little bigger than a soda can and it has a flip lid on it. I put the hair from the drain into it at the end of every shower and I empty it every couple of days/ once a week

I prevent that ugly black along the bottom of the vanity mirror by having the hand towel immediately beside me to dry my hands before I turn the water off. That way there's never any water to splash on the mirror to cause that black that happens behind the lower mirror. Or you can hide it with a frame, but I've lived in my home now soon-to-be 17 years, and I don't have that problem because of the habit I've formed.
I absolutely love your idea with the stick-on wheels for appliances, etc. Thank you very much for providing the link.🤗 This is my first time to your channel. GREAT video. I'll be back.😘

I use a flat drain/sink strainer and when the water starts to rise, I pick out the hair (which is usually neatly stuck in the drainer in a circle) and stick that to the bathtub so I can throw it away when getting out of the tub. I like this more than sticking hair to the tiles as some hair gets stuck in the drainer anyway and getting long strings of hair off the wall is way more work than the small circle shaped bunch of hair.

Thank you Kris. Your new tip is leaving a small dry cloth to dry vanity after each use!

Sticky pulley wheels??? 🤯 Going to get some asap! For the hair issue - brush your hair before you shower and it will greatly reduce the amount of hair coming out in the shower. Thank you for the tips!
