My Experience With Congo Tetras

- A bit of information about congo tetras (Phenacogrammus interruptus) along with my personal experiences having kept a school for several years. These are very colorful fish and much larger than your average tetra. I like their elongated fins and big scales and teeth. My main dislikes are that the light has to hit the males just right for the color to pop and the females have a very boring appearance.

these guys - congos - are some of the most beautiful yet under rated fish - love them
Congos are one of my favorites. In the early 2000’s I kept 8 congos in a 100 gallon planted tank with a school of rummy’s, a school of sterba cory’s, 3 redline barbs, 3 Otocinclus & a basic pleco. That was my favorite tank setup. But now I’ve downsized to nano tanks for the ease of maintenance.
What nano tanks do you recommend? What fish are you keeping now?
In the 27 years of keeping multiple different species of freshwater fish, the Congo Tetra has got to be theee most - not only easiest but most beautiful species of freshwater fish that I've ever kept.
For those who are skeptical, I can honestly say, don't be! You won't be disappointed but I will say this... Make sure you have good lighting. Nothing overkill like metal halide or anything like that... just a good quality lighting hood along with a few actinic blues.
This video was super relaxing and honestly very helpful!
I've actually just bought 6 of these I've been wanting them for 2yrs so decided to get them, they're really active in my tank and a joy to watch .
Great Video, I bought some juvinile congo tetras a few days ago, and currently I think I have to say these are my new favorites!
oh we need fish reviews like this !
Very informative and relaxing video, and your fishes have such beautiful iridescent colours!
May I ask whether I can keep eight congos with green neons in a heavily planted 48G? It’s 3ft by 1.5ft by 1.5ft. Thanks :)
this is the most amazing tetra
Hola saludos cordiales. Felicitaciones hermoso pez tetra Congo por su colorido, sus aletas y cola. Gracias
Try sliding the light right up to the front of the tank. That might help their color when they’re hanging out there. Then the main thing you have to watch out for is plants growing toward the light. Can be solved by moving the light back when the tank is not being viewed, or I guess by adding a second light there.
Nice video
awesome video
Thanks. It's done well on here. Maybe someday I will have time to make more like it.
May I ask what's the name of the silver and red tail/Fins fish I see in the background
I think you are looking at Colombian tetras. They are a very underrated fish.
Question - Will I have any cherry shrimp left in my tank if I add congo tetras? Thinking I might need to move my shrimp from the 55g if I add these.
I can't say for sure, but I personally would not combine them.
@@interiorecology I'll save my shrimp for viewing and add scuds to the tank that will house the congos then. That will give them pleny of enjoyable food to chase down:) Thanks.
That’s a nice red tail shark.
I have a group of six half males half female They seem to light up if they are excited like. feeding live food they just start flashing I noticed, ever notice this with yours?
That's definitely true for a lot of fish. I don't remember noticing as much for these. I bet a larger school with more competition brings it out. I think I could get better colour now if I set up another tank like this with all my extra experience.
"it is peaceful...." "remember that I introduced congo tetra trying to eat Celestial Danio fish.... "😂🤣
Haha yes peaceful with tankmates that are too big to try and eat!
Would I be able to keep neon tetras with Congo tetras of do you think they’ll eat the neon tetras?
I have 20 Cardinal Tetras with my 7 Congo Tetras in a 75 gallon planted tank. No issues at all. Everyone is happy!!
congo tetras and harlequin , are hey suitable ?
Yes definitely.
Since they have teeth, if they bite you, could they break skin?
I doubt it. My 4-5 in blue acara nips at me from time to time and it just feels like a tap 😂
are they good with danios and gouramis?
Yes, definitely.
Will these eat amano shrimp in a planted tank?
I would bet they would. The only shrimps I would put them with are the bigger ones like bamboo shrimp.
how do you know which one are male or female when there are very young (less then 2in)?
Colors?
I don't know if it's possible. You might just need to be patient.
Beautiful colors...what do you feed your fish?
Thank you. I just alternate between standard flakes, pellets, and tablets.
@@interiorecology no color enhancement?
There might have been. I don't pay much attention to those claims.
I have a empty 20 gallon can I keep 4 of them in it
Unfortunately these are too big and active for a 20 gallon.
I have females only. Some of them are rubbing there tails together, making a shimmering effect like a peacock shaking its tail..
Does anyone know what they are doing...?
I don't, but sounds like something they would do if they're healthy and happy.
How do you tell males from females?
@@brianjeffries207 males are smaller and have colour's, while the female is bigger and is yellow or a similar colour..
@@simonpazdera3710 Thank you for the response.
Can I keep a school of these with angelfish ?
Definitely! I think they would be very good tank mates.
I'm starting to plan a 55 with angels and a smaller geophagus species. Thinking these might be a good larger tetra for the mix. I'd love to do something like cardinals but fear they would be eaten.
I see you have boesenmani rainbow, I'm planning to get both species together. Do they get along peacefully?
I had my 14 congos in with my rainbows ( boseman’s, celebes, dwarf neons, irean reds) and they all did great, and made for a beautiful tank of fish. Totally peaceful and mellow. I’ve since moved the tetras into a dedicated tetra tank I’m developing. They’re with black neons. You should be fine.
@@debestrada2733 Thank you for sharing your experience, it sounds like a beautiful and colorful tank ❤️🐠
@@susyclau7433 haha, thanks! Actually Deb’s my wife. I pirate her account sometimes, guess I should get my own so people will quit thinking I’m her. The tanks are all mine. But anyway, when I had all those fish in one tank it made for an incredible display and there was never any conflict that went beyond a little halfhearted chasing by the big rainbow, who’s the boss of the tank. Now the 75 is dedicated to rainbows and loaches and the 40 has the congos with black neons. I watch my tanks very closely and never see a hint of stress, no injuries. Having said that, every tank is different. What works in one tank can be a disaster for another. Sometimes it all comes down to one aggressive fish that stresses a whole tank.
@@debestrada2733 Getting your own account could be a good idea 😅.
I'm surprised, I thought that congos couldn't get along with little tetras like neons. I love green neons but it seemed to me they're quite small to be safe in a tank with congos 😮
can i keep rcs and amano with congo tetra and rainbow peacock?
The only shrimp I would keep with them are big ones like bamboo shrimp.
to much species in this tank!
