    Cheers!!! Beautiful performance. The history behind this tune is beautiful: Ponce composed this in honour of Jesús Contreras, a Mexican sculptore that lost his right arm. Contreras most famous sculpture name is "Malgre Tout"in French , "A pesar de Todo" in Spanish, in English is something like "Nonetheless". The sculpture is currently in a Mexico City Museum.

      Indeed, but his name was Jesús Fructuoso Contreras.

      I feel that a more apt translation might be "In spite of everything", or "Against all odds".

    Mexican composer, Manual Maria Ponce, (1882-1948) pianist and composer already from teen years. In 1920, age 28, he met Villa-Lobos in Paris, and VL encouraged his use of traditional folklore. VL said: It gave me great joy to learn that in that distant part of my continent there was another artist who was arming himself with the resources of the folklore of his people in the struggle for the future musical independence of his country. (From Wikipedia).

    It must be pretty difficult to hit those bass notes accurately while playing the melody. Nicely played.

    • @Exelitious
      @Exelitious 6 лет назад +6

      It's actually easier, since all his focus is on his left hand. instead of partitioning between 2 hands he has only 1 to think about, all his vision and prediction can be used to better comprehend spacial information. The hard part here is to to play and actual melody and base line, as 2 separate parts, and then blend them together.

      @borisduschek8437 3 года назад

      most of all you need a lot of practice and tecnic to roll quickly the ascending developments (effortless approach Rodrigo says) ! hit the right bass note doesn't seem so difficult to me.

      @@borisduschek8437 I was wrong and I don't know how to erase my comment: it is impossible for a hobby player to hit accurately the bass notes so quickly as in this video!

      I play this. As a matter of fact I play exclusively with my left hand. The difficult part is the voicing. You have to recognize the melody and you have to play in such a way that the audience can recognize it as well. Remember Melody and harmony are both in the LH. You can’t just assume G clef is melody. That doesn’t hold at all.

    Splendid performance! While in most of the performances I've listened so far they play a chord (F#-A-E) right after A in the 3rd bar (and consecutive appearances), you introduce a subtle arpeggiated chord to solve for the triplet initiated by A as indicated in the scores. This, as compared to others, gives more grace and elegance to the piece, which of course makes it more delightful!
    I really liked it!

    Hi Paul! Great performance as always. I seem to prefer your interpretations consistently over other pianists for just about every piece. Would you consider doing a performance of Debussy's Arabesque No. 1 with the same camera angle as this video? It would greatly help with the fingering and I am very interested in hearing your interpretation of this most beautiful piece. Thank you Paul, you truly are a master pianist.

    • @PaulBartonPiano
      @PaulBartonPiano  9 лет назад +5

      ***** Hi John, thanks very much! I could record it as you suggest in overhead keyboard view, once at tempo and once slowly in sections for fingering, if that would help. Bare with me, I will put it on my list of things to do, and try for the coming week if not, the next.

    I have big hands. I noticed that some of the jumps aren't really necessary for me. I can play a 13th just fine. But should I have the delay between notes to give the emphasis of single handed?
