- It’s TMNT, a movie that is missing a lot of key components. Plot, Character Development, and much more. Nostalgia Critic takes a look at TMNT (2007).
Originally aired on April 22, 2009.
TMNT is a 2007 computer-animated superhero film written and directed by Kevin Munroe (in his feature directorial debut). It is the first animated film in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise and a standalone sequel of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III. The film features an ensemble voice cast featuring Chris Evans, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mako, Kevin Smith, Patrick Stewart, and Ziyi Zhang with narration by Laurence Fishburne. The story sees the four Turtles -- Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo (voiced respectively by James Arnold Taylor, Nolan North, Mitchell Whitfield, and Mikey Kelley) -- having grown apart after their final defeat of their arch-enemy, the Shredder, but are set to reunite and overcome their faults to save the world from evil ancient creatures.

So Casey is played by Captain America, Leo is played by Ratchet from Ratchet & Clank, Raphael is played by Nathan Drake, and their Sensai is Iroh.....HOW IS THIS NOT MORE AWESOME?!!
It's awesome enough
Years late I know but
Mikey is also ratchet?
don't forget April is played by buffy
Michelangelo is also voiced by Ratchet from Ratchet & Clank. But only in the first game. Leonardo took over from then on out.
"This is an intro to a fucking video-game".
You're not half wrong, they made a video-game out of this movie. I have it, have played it, was pretty fun.
Do you mean that Turtle smash game which is a rip off of smash bros. If so, yeah it is fun.
Nah, I mean like the literal copy of this movie, game called TMNT. It's a hack'n'slash type game. Thing is, it was released 3 days *before* the movie, so that's pretty weird.
puér stanky Oh. My mistake.
Iced Tea Yeah. The game is great if you're bored. I had it on PSP, great portable game title
+TakenRecord Dogg the PSP version sucked tho. The PS2 were better. And no, both game are completely different, downright to both its gameplay and story
Mako Iwamatsu is Splinter. He is also Aku and everybody's favorite uncle Iroh.

Am I the only one who loves how this movie looks?
The details on the textures, the character modeling, the gritty and dark setting of the city.
Heck, LOOK AT THIS SCENE 12:25 , the red light reflecting on Leo's skin because of the rain, and his eyes are absurdly detailed for 2007, and the facial expressions are on point.
oh i loved the detail
I loved this film
Play metal gear solid 4
But critics must not understand this scene.
You gotta admit this movie has a pretty dang good soundtrack.
It has a pretty dang good everything
Yah! It does have the best soundtrack that blends in so well with the scenes, etc. And frankly it's better than Mutant Mayhem's soundtrack.
If it was up to me to work on TMNT, I’d take the animation of Mutant Mayhem with the art direction, character designs and music of 2007. The perfect mishmash.
I do mess with MM’s soundtrack since it’s capturing the 90s era of the Turtles, but I’m preferably more for that 2000s era.
Wait... Wait... Where did this theory that Clark Kent is Superman come from? Clark Kent is just a humble reporter. Superman is a Physical God. Superman has no secret identity. He's Superman all the time. Silly Critic.
I know right, it's just as crazy as saying Bruce Wayne is Batman.
+Mohogany Ceaser I know right and this is coming the guy with a batman pic
Mohogany Ceaser and saying dick Grayson is robin
Ikr it's insane. Someone earlier was trying to convince me Shaggy from Scooby Doo was actually an all powerful deity pretending to be a wimp.
That’s like saying Matt Murdock is daredevil. Pitiful theory.

Nah I loved it too.

Ya I liked the depth. It really was strong enough for me that I bought the dvd and Gellar was amazing as was Stewart.
It's actually my favorite TMNT film to this day next to the first movie and wayyyy more than the new ones right now. I loved the tone and I thought the characters were the best represented in this movie.
That's also my favourite TMNT movie. This is basically tepe history Of how I GET obsessed with TMNT.

Wow, Splinter's voice in this movie sounds like an old man who is an uncle to a scarred ex-prince who is bounty hunting the latest reincarnation of an ancient peace keeping warrior to restore his father's love again.

Interesting
Zoë Z. Snazzy Lesson learn people, don't make fun of Mako.
Is he making fun of Mako though? Mako died midway through this film's production, so Greg Baldwin was brought in as a voice double. As someone who has watched Avatar: the Last Airbender multiple times, I can say that the voicework in the scene that NC mocks sounds distinctly like Greg, not Mako.

Animation was good, characters were good and interesting, story needed fixing, but overall not the worst but not the best ninja turtles movie
I think it is. I heard somewhere that is a sequel to the original 90’s trilogy.
@MovieMonster if you look closely at 16:56, the items on the trophy shelf correspond to each of the original three movies.

7:40 I always love when there some rich guy who's secretely evil and nobody seems to bat at eye when they see him. Most billionaires are saggy old men, not 7 foot tall behemoths with the body type that could be best described as "refrigerator with legs". Seriously, using April as a metric for the average woman (in the show) that would mean his shoulders are roughly 4-5 times as broad as hers, meaning his shoulders are roughly 8 feet wide. Imagine meeting the your new boss and he's spends the whole interview bench pressing your Honda Accord before eating a whole cow.
Ummm interesting comment, but I don't know, lol
While I do like Mako, I will acknowledge that I didn't like his voice as Splinter. He did great as Iroh in Avatar the Last Airbender, and every other movie I saw him in, but I think there were other voices of Splinter that were better than him. Sorry Mako, nothing personal, and may you rest in peace.
Omnicidal Clown My you rest in peace? Haven't heard that one before.
Chozo Hunter Well excuse me for having sympathy towards a deceased actor.
Omnicidal Clown No, I meant that you spelled "may" wrong in your previous comment.
Omnicidal Clown I'm sorry, I wasn't criticising you or anything, just pointing out a typo. Probably should have been clearer about it when I first wrote it. -_-)
"Ugh the turtles are just standing around developing characters!"
Turtles start fighting "ugh, this is just a video game!"
yeah I thought that was kinda unfair to criticise both sides of the story - not for HOW they did it, but for doing it at ALL!
Justyn Matthew Casey I think his problem was that they’re developing characters in a way that’s not natural or doesn’t fit in with the turtles identity. Not to mention that it’s developing characters around a story that we haven’t seen. There’s barely any context for it. And the video game thing was just a joke. He even says the cgi and action scenes are kickass.
The problem was that they didn’t explain why the turtles retired so the arcs made no sense.
If only it was possible to develop characters in ways other than standing and talking, or to have action scenes that serve purposes
Critic says he grew up with the series, and yet he had no idea who Karai, one of the coolest characters of the turtle franchise, was. I think this movie was definitely made for the fans that watched the 2003 series, which was far darker and more adult than the original 80s cartoon. I agree that they didn't explain the plot point and why Leo was gone for so long very well, but I still liked this movie. If nothing else, I thought all the characters were portrayed very well, and it explored the turtles brotherly relationships in a more adult fashion.
Winds Haven exactly it's a continuation that's why
He said he grew up with the 80’s cartoon not the 2003 one
i didn’t exactly grow up with the 2003 cartoon TMNT is just one of those things you’re recognise.
i loved this movie when i saw it with my uncle who read the comics and watched the 80’s cartoon,he liked the way they didn’t introduced shredders daughter at all what happened to him or why leo was in the jungle.
not knowing is part of the mystery.
i understand and can see Dougs points here but he got too nitpicke tbh.its one of those movies that makes your kid shut up for 90 minutes isn’t that enough?
@@henry3153 Well, Leonardo and Raphael don't really get along
The reason he didn’t know who karai was is because she wasn’t in the 80s show.

It’s funny how Doug didn’t realize the voice actor of splinter is the same voice actor of uncle iroh in avatar last air bender. Since he’s a big fan of the show
I remembered this as a live action movie, so when I was searching for it, I was surprised. Probably my first interaction with TMNT.
This is supposed to be a sequel to the 90's live action movies which is probably why they skipped the backstory
cyberGupi Not really; the designs and personalities have much more in common with the live-action films, compared to any other version.
rocknrolllives Precisely; why so many failed to understand that is beyond me.
Moviefan2k4 Definitely seem more like the personalities from 03 to me. You can tell since the Foot's leader, Karai (or however you spell that), is from the 03 show.
munromister777
You spelled it right, but Karai was in the original '80s comics before the cartoons or films ever existed. Her origin's varied few times, but she's usually been depicted as second to the Shredder.
Moviefan2k4
Oh, I didn't know that.
I didn't see this movie, but Mickey and Leonardo are voiced by the two voice actors for Ratchet? Cool.
Yeah that is pretty neat isn't it
And Casey Jones in this movie is voiced Captain America himself, Chris Evans
AND Nolan North, aka Nathan Drake himself, is Raphael
All these people are putting down the film for little to no plot before hand, here I am just accepting how it is.
The film has tons of plot.......
It did seem to be just a little too video-game esc. Never quite felt like I was watching a movie at any point, and didn't help the fact it was all C.G.I. with no live action mixed in at all either.
Fun story from seeing this movie in the theater: went with some friends in the afternoon (we were all in college and a little toasted that afternoon) but scene where Leo & Ralph fight on the roof in the rain. A little boy behind me stands up on the edge of his seat and SCREAMS at the screen! “Nooooo! That’s your brother!!! You can’t fight your brother!” Of course me and my friends find this to be the most funny thing we’ve ever heard, I still laugh about it to this day 😂
12:35 Sure, let's ignore that Leonardo wants them to recover the ability to work as a team before going back to fighting while Raphael selfishly decides that he knows better than even Splinter (who actually ordered Leo to not fight until they were all a team again) and goes to fight crime not to help people, but just for his ego. Sure, ignore the actual reason they have conflict in the movie. Sure they are being idiots and there was no real need in the movie to have a conflict among the turtles, but it's kind of stupid to bitch about a lack of explanation when you have completely ignored the explanation.
Also, everyone always gives Leo crap for being a bad leader... has anyone noticed he's always right? At the end of the day, whenever he makes a choice the others don't like, it turns out that he was right all along.
Plus, it was an amazing fight.
You are unnecessarily salty.
@@sophiawilkins613 It's a "sin" most old boy shows commit: the lesson they want to teach through a character is lost because what you actually see contradicts it. In TMNT Leonardo is described as being arrogant, prideful and thinking he's always right and it's seen as a negative. But what you actually see in the show is that he IS always right (or 90% of the time anyway). Similarly, Rafaello is shown being all impulsive and quick-tempered and passionate, and is usually shown as the "victim" to Leonardo's decisions... except Rafaello gets into trouble without accomplishing anything most of the time.
And this contradiction between "show" and "tell" drives me up walls.
Yay that why I hate few nostalgia critic reviews. They kind of get me boil up.
@@NeroCM Yeah but Leo is Described that Way by the Cool dude so people tend to believe the Cool dude instead of their Eyes. Just look at Cyclops the Guys always right yet still gets shit from Wolverine. Who do people believe when He calls Scott a Dick despite the contrary?

I think there was an animated tv show, and that’s what the movie takes after. I never watched the show though.
Latvian Dragon
Well I don’t know. What’s the point of the movie then? You’d think it would just take place WAY after the animated set or something.
TMNT, honestly, isn't that bad. It has great voice cast and animation, but suffers from feeling more like an unused plot from the 2003 series (and it doesn't help that the voice acting, while not at all the same voices, sound quite similar), being confused on whether it wanted to be a sequel to the original trilogy or a standalone universe (despite Turtles Forever confirming it IS a standalone universe), and making Leonardo a dick.
It's also interesting NC says that parts of this movie feel like a video game, because ironically enough, director Kevin Monroe is directing the Ratchet and Clank movie that's coming out as well as the Sly Cooper movie.
Yeah
The 2003 show was GOOD!!!

13:37 - Aww yeah, a white *GameCube* controller! :D Doug knows what's up.
Well, ya. They use to sell those.
Holy shit, it's Iroh!
This movie is supposed to the follow the 2k3 series when it ended in 2k7. The last season, Back to the Sewer, ended on the 13th episode, with April and Casey getting married, which is why they are sharing an apartment. Karai, Shredder's "daughter" takes over the Foot Clan in the show, hence why she is seen leading the clan in this movie.
As for Karai's line that the turtles would see familiar faces, in 2k9 before Mirage sold the license to the TMNT to Nickelodeon, they made a final movie titled Turtles Forever, which has the 2k3 turtles meeting the 90's turtles, and they all travel to "Turtle Prime" which end up being the "original dimension" to when the turtles first appear, i.e. the 1984 comic book.
Prolly more than you wanted to know, but now you know.
***** Clearly you're more observant than I am!
I had not noticed the Time Scepter, nor the canister. I also did not pay attention to the outfits the foot clan wore, at least, not closely. I saw the red dragon foot symbol and assumed it was following the 2k3 series!
Well spotted!
I’m really glad the 2kX thing has generally stopped being a thing, that was painful to read.
4:07 Nitpicking at its best
Cristian M. Not really. It’s a serious problem when the movie doesn’t even know it’s target audience. If it’s for fans, why do you need to have things that fill them in? If it’s not, why spend so little time on their backstory?
Long ago in a distant movie... I, Mako, the shape shifting master of acting unleashed an unspeakably good performance. But a foolish Nostalgia Critic stepped forth to oppose me. Before the final blow was struck, I opened a portal into the internet where fanboys came to my defense! And plunged the critic into the future that is Mako!
I like this movie but it seems like a season finale to a tv show that was never made. Also that would be an awsome show.
10:57 Yeah Casey... is there something you'd like to tell us??
I understand NC's points about the vague plot and backstory skips, but these are my opinions on the film:
1. They don't have to spell out "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" for every movie. The franchise has been around for decades now, even people who aren't familiar with it could figure it out. The green color and manhole cover in the opening alone practically gave it away. TMNT was a cool and conservative title meant to be short, sweet and to the point.
2. The beginning of every film doesn't need to recap the Turtles' backstory. Again, this was 2007. These characters began in 1984. Studios are not responsible for every person that happened to not grow up with them. This movie is a new chapter in the Turtles' lives that references the past while standing on its own, a new generation of the fiction. Not every Superman movie had to start off on Krypton, did it? Be honest, how many don't know that story by now?
3. While I do agree that the film was overly brooding at points and not that funny, that ultimately didn't ruin the experience for me. The idea of the Turtles being mostly retired from crime fighting, feeling fractured without their brother, getting their groove back as a team, Casey contemplating his future with April, this all made for a compelling plot in my book. It also showed fans that these characters can tackle mature issues while still being fun.
4. April's transition from a reporter to an antiques dealer with now exceptional combat skill actually made sense and gave her a larger role. She's always had passion for finding big stories and exposing the truth, both things she still does in this job but in a different way. Also, as often as she's been kidnapped and sidelined, of course she would train over time. It may be Tomb Raider-ish, but this overall is my favorite April whose main purpose for once isn't being TMNT's Lois Lane.
5. This film also has my favorite version of Karai. She's intimidating, independent with Shredder gone, a more honorable leader, has a nice look, and is of course bad@$$. Her fights with Leo and April alone were short but well done.
6. Mako's Splinter, to me, was the best of the cast. He sounded old & wise, composed & fatherly, as he's always been. It felt authentic, and him joining the action to help save Leo and close the portal was awesome, albeit brief. Mako was great as Iroh in Avatar, it was nice seeing him go out performing as another beloved character. "I still got it", my favorite line :)
7. Yes, Leonardo's reasoning for being away so long is vague. Yes, his leadership skills do not show improvement right away. Yes, his hypocrisy about vigilantism with Nightwatcher and stupidity for not knowing it was Raphael immediately is noticeable. Despite all that, I still found his introduction cool and the depth given to his rivalry with Raphael engaging.
8. I actually respect the film for introducing new villains and fresh territory instead of rehashing Shredder. Granted, he will always be the most popular of the Turtles' nemeses, but that had gotten stale for me. I wanted the Turtles to go on new adventures that didn't always revolve around the Foot Clan, Utrom, and Krang. I found the 13 monsters and stone generals creative even if they weren't as memorable. I also liked how the Turtles', Foot, and Winters' storylines all converged in the finale. The moral was how families can become estranged but also grow through adversity, as Winters' trouble with his was reflected in the Turtles.
No joke, at 14:19, my exact words were "Well this got gay."
They are brothers you weirdo.
@@cybercriminal3110 I know right
@@cybercriminal3110thank you, that what I said.
He the same guy that out sailor moon on the top 11 sexy characters. Even though she was a minor at the time.
@@nathanblevins158 Nostalgia critic is a fiction character, reflecting the crowd sometimes. Doug is much more normal
Leo does actually have a time of self discovery, he looses his nerve after nearly being killed by Shredder. It causes a major rift between him and Rafael. I think the joke about none of the turtles recognizing Raph is how they are turtles and they don't notice the odd body frame. As far as the familiar faces line by the Foot, they do resurrect the Shredder, in the comic. Which is dark and horrifying because that was the comic.
Here’s something interesting to note. This film is set in the same universe as the live action movie trilogy from the 90s. In the scene where Splinter places Yaotl’s helmet and Raph’s Nightwatcher helmet on that shelf, you can also see Shredder’s helmet from the first movie, the TGRI Ooze Canister from Secret of the Ooze, and the Time Scepter from the third movie.
NC: As you all know I love everything nostalgic Me: Hence your name.
Man in 2007 that CG was considered good? It's amazing how far we've come since then
Uncle iroh has quite the resume for training troubled young men into heroes
Am I the only one who wants to see him re-review this movie? I think he was WAY too harsh on it back then, and I'm curious if his opinion has changed at all.
The whole point of the Nostalgia Critic back then was to be harsh and even nitpick. That’s why he trashed most of the films he reviewed, because that was the point. He played an angry, retro reviewer. His character has mellowed out a bit more over the past decade or so and now his reviews are more objective, like Doug giving his honest reviews, rather than him playing angry review character.
18:34
And thus begins Doug's long history in comedic commercials
Who thought of Ghostbusters2 during the scenes with the jobs
Me
I thought of Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island
2:39 OK but that's LITERALLY the Mortal Kombat Armageddon intro
Let’s hope the Nostalgia Critic will be reviewing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem in the coming months.
He did in the Doug’s review and he liked it, but he says that the movie ended up being too XMEN at the end. I agree with him 👍
I think Lawrence Fishburne might be the excellent choice to play The Beyonder from Marvel's Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I love this movie. I love the action, I love the voice acting, and I also love the fact that it took a different approach to the Turtles, following a ‘Where are they now?’ scenario.
Splinter was voiced by Mako, most famously known as “Uncle Iroh” from Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Believe me or not there's a real video game for this movie
H MasterChaos yeah I really liked it
At least this movie is decent, and 100 times better than the Michael Bay production, god, that movie is so awful.
5:35 Wait a minute, that voice sounds familiar. Call me crazy but that has to be the voice actor for Johnny Test
It is.
It's probably just me, but I swear he sounds like Spyro.
Actually, I was close! It's Ratchet from Ratchet and Clank!
He also played Harry Osborn in The Spectacular Spider-Man
@@thenerdyturd1717 No, he voiced a different character

"And also excuse me for looking more like a fox..."
Seriously tho, What the Hell, Movie??
dang, I feel old hearing Doug refer to the 2003 series as "the new show"
I'd like to see a review of the 2012 series.
11:45 You know, remove that scene, of Leo being surprised, and it would actually make sense to just warn him and then fight. As it would show Leo is trying to pull the big brother tough love act
Most of you guys are gonna think I'm crazy, but I love ninja turtles 2014 and I think the 2014 ninja turtles movie is 100 times better than ninja turtles 3
+Montel J. Guzman well being 100 times better the turtles 3 isn't hard
8th wonder of the world yeah
+Montel J. Guzman Better than III? Yes. Good? To me, not at all.
+Montel J. Guzman Setting a high bar, there
Living Myth lol I didn't realize that
The foot leader's name is Karai. She was a rebooted character in the early 2000s ninja Turtles series collection. She was also the shredder's daughter. Just in case you were confused.
us 2000's kids knew that, but Doug is more familiar with the 80's/90's series
13:29 look at all those Foot Ninja's,I can't believe this Movie Ripped off Sengoku Basara
