The Gen 3 Roaming Legendaries Are Glitchy and Terrible

  • Today we take a deeper, more technical dive into some legendary Pokemon from the Gen 3 games, specifically Entei, Raikou, Suicune, Latios, and Latias. In their Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed and LeafGreen appearances, these Pokemon suffer from seemingly tiny glitches that can go the length of ruining the Pokemon entirely. Let's take a look!
    Pokemon glitches and the like are always interesting to me, but diving into the context created by them and how they affect our playthroughs and stories with the games- that's what I LOVE! And this one has implications for any normal playthrough in gen 3 Pokemon, but also competitive, so it can definitely be far reaching.
    Definitely got a little technical on this one, hope you still enjoyed it! I'm still figuring things out and experimenting with the medium.

    These glitches have always been so funny to me. Not only are the roamers even harder to get than usual to the point of some of them being downright impossible if you let them Roar, if you do manage to catch them you get a Pokemon with absolutely horrible IV's as your reward. It's the biggest accidental middle finger.

I remember as a kid after a few failed capture attempts of Suicune in FR, I then prepared by capturing a Wobbufett, which I would've never used otherwise at the time, but realized it's ability could help.
    But on another playthrough when I tried for my favorite of the trio, Raikou I had no idea of the glitch after I got roared out and saved my game, only to see the "Area Unkonwn". I had no idea what I did wrong, if maybe you only get a certain number of chances, etc. Man I was salty after all that work beating the game for that to happen lol.

    • @Wryyyong
      @Wryyyong Год назад

      @@danf7411 The video literally goes over this:
      - A Pokemon's Individual Values are stored within their data as a 32-bit integer value, in which only the first 30 bits of the value are used. 5 bits are used to store the Individual Value for each stat, which gives them their limit of 0-31.
      - The data for the roaming Latias/Latios/Entei/Raikou/Suicune is generated upon having their event flags triggered, to try and ensure you're fighting the exact same one each time you encounter them. The generation and storing of this data within the cartridge's SRAM, by itself, runs without issue.
      - Due to a programming oversight however, when you actually manage to successfully capture your roaming Pokemon, the game incorrectly copies the Individual Values within this stored data onto your newly-captured Pokemon -- it only copies the first byte (8 bits) of the value, leaving the remaining three bytes (24 bits) of it as zero.
      - As a result of the above, and due to the exact order the bits are interpreted as, this error effectively locks their Speed, Special Defense, Special Attack and Defense IVs to 0 and caps the Attack IV at 7. Only the HP IV ends up being copied in full. The only way of circumventing this error without patching the game itself is via external modifications to the save data to write new Individual Values to the Pokemon.
      - This error is only present within _Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed,_ and _LeafGreen._ It was fixed with the release of _Emerald._

There was a cancelled event for the mythical Pokémon Sploink in which they used a unique calculation for your shiny odds based off of your trainer ID instead of the random chance. I remember I got in the habit of calculating the IV's of My Pokemon back in generation 3 when I was the teenager still have time to do that kind of thing. I immediately noticed that my Raikou and Latios had incorrect stats because they both had zeros for their flat for Ivy's which meant that that couldn't be a coincidence more than likely

    It's funny how thanks to another oversight in Colosseum, the legendary beasts can be caught as shinies as all the Shadow Pokemon were meant to be shiny-locked. Otherwise, getting a shiny form of those three in Gen 3 with decent IVs would be impossible through legitmate means.

    hah, I wonder just how many kids encountered a g2 legend on that patch of grass in FRLG. LeafGreen was the first game I never reset, so that's also the only place I ever encountered Entei (in g3). I was specifically making my way to cerulean cave and ran out of repel like three steps from the shore, or something, idk it was 20y ago. I just know that I was surprised af to see a johto legend in my kanto game and the master ball I had intended to use on mewtwo instead got used for entei. who replaced the persian on my team. I... my young teams were more about heart than tactics. One time I ran through Sapphire with two Mightyena on my team because they were a mated pair in my head. xD

      It's probably more likely that the devs never noticed since this is endgame content and the game doesn't directly tell you what IVs are

  • @christophsiebert1213
    @christophsiebert1213 6 месяцев назад

    That IV copy bug seems like a typical mixup of pointer types. Instead of using an int pointer, to copy the whole buffer of 30 bits (actually 32, as this is an integer value), they accidentally refered to that bit of memory with a byte pointer instead, which only captures the first 8 bit. And since the GBA stores multi-byte values in little endian, this means the least-significant (right-most) bits come first, in full bytes. This explains why only the most right bits are copied over from that memory location, and not the left most bits instead.
    That's also a very easy to fix thing, if you know it exists, you just change the pointer type. But this is a very funny oversight.

      I believe Gen 3 were the first Pokemon games programmed in C so I shouldn't be too surprised a mistake or two slipped through the cracks. I don't have any proof of this, but knowing what I know about Game Boy, you were better off programming games for it using assembler back then.

    If nothing else, an easy-ish 0IV in Atk for Suicune, Raikou and Latie for lower confusion and etc damage is pretty alright. And maybe there's a very specific use for a 0IV Suicune on a trick room team? Maybe?

    The year was 2011. I was 10 & played Ruby on my GBA so many times i was bored. One day chilling at my friend's place i had a team of dark pokemon and was running on grass and encountered Latios. I was flannergasted & when i tried to catch it ofc it failed & ran away. Now since i 've never heard of the term roaming legendaries i was scared i could never catch it but my friend said maybe check the map. When i did i saw it's head on a city. So naturally i used fly and went to it's location but then it's gone to another , so naturally I like the oblivious kid who spammed A while catching every fella i flew around the entire region (while this was happening the battery was red) so i asked my friend to plug the charger quick while i was chasing it. So while i got caught up with trying to catch it i finally encountered a 2nd time & trapped it with mean look this time. Finally I had done some damage to it and I had caught it. But then , the goddamn gameboy went off. Me & my friend both screamed in panic wondering if I saved. But alas my dumbass hadn't saved it & i never touched the game again thinking i could never meet it.

    There is a way you can try to avoid the Roar bug in _FRLG._ All you need is a Vulpix/Ninetales with Mean Look, Imprison, and Roar. Use Mean Look on turn one then Imprison on turn two. Now the Legendary Beasts can’t run and can’t use Roar either. Just hope that they don’t use Roar on either of the first two turns.
    And sorry but it’s pronounced “Rai-oh.”

    Fire Red and Leaf Green are great games simply for being (mostly) non-broken renditions of the original adventure compared to JP Blue/Red/Blue/Yellow and especially whatever the unofficially called "Gen 0"-games were, but the roamers are sure a feature of all time.
