  • A Kyo-machiya along the Sanjo shopping street is currently being renovated! There are different ways and approaches to fix a Kyo-machiya, and Kyomachiya Sakujigumi (京町家作事組) is a group of professionals that specialize in renovating a Kyo-machiya the traditional way. There is no correct answer to what the "best way" is when renovating a Kyo-machiya, but the people at Sakujigumi do try to bring these traditional townhouses back to their original state.
Honestly, I would love to have my machiya fixed the traditional way, but the traditional way is actually the more expensive way as well...

My gosh those netsugi joints are amazing...such skilled and patient tradesmen.

Really hoping such skills get passed on to more future craftsmen (including non-Japanese people) .. I'm more interested in learning plaster work first

Fascinating to watch the creation and installation of the joint...thanks Steven

Thank you! It's quite hard to capture the entire work without being on site all the time, but hopefully I'll get to capture & show more aspects of a machiya renovation later on.

The joinery detail on the post is interesting and I imagine it was developed to be strong with regard to earthquakes (and to obviate the need for metal fasteners).

There are different types of joinery used depending on the damaged area/level of the pillar. How much effectiveness it has on resisting earthquakes I'm not sure but anything's better than a half-corroded pillar!

Facinating to watch - these craftsmen have such high skills!

Yes it's unfortunate that with fewer traditional houses left the skills of the old craftsmen might disappear as well...

@@GoodOldHousesJapan Did you read 'Lost Japan' by Alex Kerr? He talked of the disappearing roof thatchers back in the 70s 👍😊

Interesting to see a different form of construction, thank you for posting this. I hope there is more to come (without the click track, how about some taiko music?).

I'll use some Taiko music for more dramatic moments 😂 there will be more!

    Really interesting video as always.
Also, the song that plays at 3:06-3:28 is the Japanese version of Kiss Me by Sixpence None The Richer

You got it right! I was a bit worried that RUclips would flag the background music from the radio...

Does Japan require liscense contractor to remodel houses or apartment ?

    • @GoodOldHousesJapan
      @GoodOldHousesJapan  2 года назад +1

Nope. You can DIY if you have the time and skill. Electric wire and water/gas pipe related work needs to be done by people with license I believe.

Ah, figured it out, it's the Japanese cover of "Kiss me" by Sixpence None The Richer. No wonder I couldn't figure it out, it was a cover

Lots of Japanese covers of western music on the radio!
