One of my main criticism is how Ancient Magic is handled in gameplay, I mean it's just finishers, yeeting objects at enemies & puzzles where you just press a button while standing at the right spot to make something happen. The Keepers promised to teach the player how to wield Ancient Magic properly, but that never happens, the Ancient Magic system never goes beyond what I mentioned before which is disappointing

Just like how some bosses can tank Avada Kadavra, I hated how after transforming enemies into exploding barrels, destroying said barrels with an explosive damage spell does virtually nothing to them, _unless_ you throw them at another enemy to make them explode. Otherwise, they'll just apparate back a second later like nothing happened. It was annoying seeing the red triangles on the mini-map despite the transformed barrels were exploded from a spell. On the flip side, the game has no problem with you permanently transforming chickens or whatnot into galleons.

because the game really isn't that great? I almost beat it but couldn't as the game takes a huge nosedive in quality around half way point when the magic wears off. The world is pretty sure, but its empty and filled with side content that amounts to nothing, none of it was well written or did anything past giving xp or gear ( which you likely do not need ), the puzzles are just repeats for the most part and were easy, you didn't feel like you were in a school at all, it felt like your typical generic Ubi style open world game. The acting was all over the place as well. It doesn't do anything that warrants a GOTY

I appreciate how positioning Avalanche Software as a studio "way out of their depth" makes for a better story, but the truth is, after the billion dollar franchise that was Disney Infinity, we were actually quite confident in our ability to pull it off. This is because Disney Infinity, (with all its figures and playsets and Toybox and three released versions covering over a dozen different IP's) was similar in size and scope to Hogwarts Legacy.
In fact, I contend that THERE WAS NO BETTER STUDIO in all of AAA gaming to make Hogwarts Legacy because Avalanche Software was the studio most experienced with treating IP with care and respect in the entire world. No other studio had worked successfully with so much IP and pleased so many fans in the process.
Howarts Legacy was a success BECAUSE of the dedication and experience of the dev team at Avalanche Software, not in spite of it.

I appreciate your insight here, Troy, I hope you know I meant no ill intent! I completely agree I should have weighed the success of Disney Infinity more in my pre-launch analysis, as an outsider I obviously don’t know the ins and outs like yourself. Back then assumed the closure of the studio by Disney would have impacted the development potential, but Hogwarts Legacy proved it didn’t! Thanks for creating something truly special!

What shocked me I'm a 2nd playthrough was that my feelings towards Sebastians actions were the compete opposite of the first time. First one, I felt like he is completely justified and that I would kill that Solomon myself if I knew the spell. But the second time... I couldn't sympathize with Sebastian at all. I somehow started seeing the story from uncle's perspective and couldn't help but see the wrongs behind Sebastian's reasoning

Same. Even in the first play through I thought “well he might be going about it the wrong way, but Sebastian has a point” On my second play through I just think he’s whiny and doesn’t really understand what’s going on.

    • @Justin.Franks
      @Justin.Franks 13 дней назад +15

It's because you knew that he would fail to cure his sister. The first time playing, you are holding out hope for Sebastian to find a cure, and that if he did, it would be an "ends justify the means" situation. But now since you _know_ he will fail, you also know that he killed his uncle for nothing.

    • @jestermon101
      @jestermon101 13 дней назад +1

I've seen a defence for Sebastian's actions as a lack of guidance and understanding from his uncle pushing Sebastian as far as he goes.
From the moment we are introduced to Solomon it's clear that they're going for each other's throats at how hostile they are with each other.
Solomon yells at Sebastian and forbids his actions as 'pointless' and refuses to let him even try making Sebastian more determined and every interaction between the two ends in yelling with neither able to talk to the other, it was inevitable that one was going to wind up dead.
Given that we learn that Rookwood was responsible for Anne's curse that does open up a new option for Anne to be cured as previously it was believed that a Goblin cursed Anne. This means the kind of magic that cursed Anne was completely different from what the Healers expected and thus they were searching down the wrong path, looking for answers in the wrong place entirely.
Meaning Anne's curse could be cured with proper research into Rookwood's belongings.
Here's a video supporting Sebastian by Sam Bram.

@@Justin.Franks Interesting I never trusted him. From nearly the beginning I felt something was off about him with his "I like my friends in my debt" and it just got worse the more I played as over and over again he manipulates and lies to people for their own good.
Teaching you confringo seems fine but he never asks Ominous if he's ok with Sebastian bringing a new person to a place that has great emotional value to him which he showed Sebastian and his sister. When he wants you to get Ominous to take you into Salazar's personal chambers he drops a hint about Ominous's tortured past. Well and good except if you then say "Ok I respect his privacy don't tell me more" he goes on about how he'd never let it drop and its odd you aren't asking for more information. Then with Crucio he's not sure he can cast it but Imperio he's absolutely certain it will work. Why? Why is he so sure he can cast Imperio successfully but not crucio? His choice of that spell to stop the goblin then the smile as he forces them to kill themselves before getting upset at being forbidden to go to his sister and his home. His fury at you when you don't do what he wants then his sudden personality shift if you take the choice to say maybe you should do it alone. HIs constant subtle put downs. Even the whole final confrontation when he brings you along I'm just thinking why am I here? His sister sure but what is the reason to bring me (and not Ominous). Sure it might be entirely legitimate but the dark artifact does require a sacrifice to use its power, perhaps thats meant to be me.
At the end I turn him in not because I feel "You did illegal magic and must be punished" but because I just can't make myself trust him. Yes he seems remorseful but by that stage he's shown himself to be quite willing to lie even to his oldest "friend" for "their own good" and be fairly good at it. If I could believe his remorse I might have kept quiet but well I'm just thinking of how many times he made Ominous thiink he was going to stop before this.

    • @Acuas
      @Acuas 13 дней назад +1

I think that's another point they missed hard, they should've let you decide on going to the dark arts with him, or help him with your ancient magic and cure her sister, and so, also saving him from going bad.
In another point, I hated sebastian from the star, more so when we know Solomon was an auror, who is to say he didn't try everything he could, and so, also ended up going into the dark arts, and that's how he lost his job as an auror, and with that, he knew that turning to the dark art wouldn't help at all, and that's why he was so hard on him. Would love to see a story like that, but definitely, what I hated the most, is that they never gave us the chance to cure her, which is horrible.

I agree entirely with a "actions have consequence's" concept. I am a story game player, and the reason I go back to games like RDR2, BG3, Skyrim, Cyberpunk and the AC franchise is because it was MY story. They made me emotionally invested, to the point that I think about them still today, and will go back and start them over again just to feel the emotional draw. I played Hogwarts Legacy and 100% everything, and never went back to it. It's sat untouched in my Steam Library. People loved Harry Potter, not just because of the magical world and wonder, but because it pulled readers/ watchers in emotionally with the characters and relationships. In Hogwarts Legacy, everyone played the same story and it was pretty surface level; it didn't feel special or unique (outside of it being a wizard/ witch game of course). Not to say I didn't enjoy it, I loved it and saw amazing potential, but I agree with what you mentioned "it didn't have the same wonder on the second playthrough". I hate that I played it once and didn't feel the need or want to pick it back up again. I want to see Avalanche make investments in the story and dig deeper into characters, relationships and decision making to make a unique gameplay. I mean, you have 4 different houses and they all feel the same when playing the story? Just as an example, if you were Slytherin, you could start as a pretty "evil" character and make story decisions to create a redemption arch character by the end of the game. I want joyous highs and gut wrenching lows and difficult dialogue choices. I want to talk to my friends about it, and us all have completely different playthroughs, because we're all different. I want to play it 100 times and discover something new every time. After all, its just as much a simulation game as it is an RPG adventure game.

The amount of content in the castle didn't bother me, but the complete lack of anything in the common rooms was disappointing. If a side character was in your house, you should meet them in the CR to start the mission at least. Have a game system like in Red Dead that are in the CRs or any reason to go there. It would be great if they had CR specific missions, so what house you're in matters. This would promote multiple plays.

I think at least part of the reason why you can't fly into Hogsmeade might have to do with the Switch port.
On the Switch port, Hogsmeade isn't loaded in with the rest of the open world, you actually have to go through a loading screen to enter & exit Hogsmeade due to Hogsmeade being loaded as a separate world space on the Switch port, hence the magic barrier. And I think to keep each version identical on what the player can & can't do, they added the anti-flight barrier over Hogsmeade for every version

I kinda felt bad buying this game on sale for $20 bucks around a month ago, because of how good it is. I was blown away at the liveliness of the world. I still can't get over how most paintings in the castle move so fluidly while exploring and how much stuff there is to find in the surrounding areas. Definitely worth the money.

it would be nice if this game become online multiplayer, something like GTA online, and people can party together to defeat bosses, clear dungeons, catch limited time beast, play Quidditch, learn rare spells, defeat dark wizards, explore portals, get rare wands, dresses, brooms, potions etc. and players need to select main job and other can be side jobs, they will get extra upgrade points for the main job.

    Absolutely loved the game...
The only thing that was a bit dissapointing for me was that the classes were nothing more than a mission to get new spells and abilities, and when you got said ability the classes were not available anymore.
Hoped they would implement a system like Rockstars Bully were the time of day dictates if and which classes you had and be manditory.
And if you weren't in class you had to dodge prefects that would sent you to class if caught.
    Maybe in Hogwarts part 2.

Not sure what you're talking about the castle is the worst part of the game. And they know that since none of the action happens there. As soon as you can move they advise you to leave the castle and mess around in the world. Compare the castle here with the castle in Order of the Phoenix and you'll see why Legacy's castle is just dead eye candy.
I'm not even gonna compare it to the first 3 HP games since that would just be unfair, as those games relied solely on the castle to make the world interesting and believable.

For me, it was my GOTY that year but I don't think it was even nominated unfortunately. But the incredible sense of magic I felt on that first playthrough was indescribable. Going to the theatres every year or two for EVERY movie release was a tradition and a huge part of my childhood, and when I could immerse myself in that world myself at my pace, it was nothing short of magical. It is unfortunate that it has very little replay-ability, as anything after that first playthrough isn't going to hit the same, but I didn't mind because it's design was centered around that initial playthrough.
I still look back at it so fondly and miss it so much... I agree with you about putting even more content in the castle, but I did really enjoy the open world too. Quidditch and taking more classes are definitely welcome to me! I eagerly await any new content, DLC, future games, etc. from the studio.

I hope that they keep things the way they were with the first one. They were so successful because of the controversy surrounding it and the fact that they didn't bow down to the demands being made of them. If they do give in to those demands on the second game it is going to flop hard

  • @hueco5002

I was deeply saddened that the magic trees were not inclusive of maybe another 2 dozen spells that really forced you into a specialization - that way replay-ability was increased. Oh well. If they do a sequel I’m sure it’ll be fun.

I do fully believe the delays were about making sure they game was fully polished and actually good. They didn't want to screw it up and literally *any* fixable flaw they could find, and detail they could add, they decided to take it. As much as I would have liked to play it 2 or 3 years earlier, it would NOT have been the same. It would have been less than. So I appreciate them wanting to get it right. Imagine if they waited and waited and then... failed.... *Cough Game of Thrones, Cough*

Don't confuse a gameplay mechanic with the in-universe lore. He doesn't survive the killing curse. You're playing a video game, when his health gets to zero it then goes to the wand clash. The killing curse did exactly that, brought his health to zero. Smh jeez lol

If we truly are getting a directors cut for the game, I hope we can learn many more spells. What I missed from a previous experience with the 2nd and 3rd year games made on Playstation 2 was finding spells randomly in a sense, like maybe a secret passage in the library that leads you to a book teaching Scourify. I hope they also improve the game by time skipping us (maybe we can take a job at Hogwarts similiar to Isodora's path) and we can still come and go as needed?
There are also some unfinished story points as Sebastian's for example seems unfinished and what about Isodora's status for ancient magic? She knew how the keepers thought, one portrait being destroyed, in her home and the one at Hogwarts where i'm sure one of the keepers taught her where the Undercroft was for her other portrait...she would have another somewhere I imagine.
Ancient magic seems still as much of a mystery as it did in the beginning of the game, and aside from combat, what can we do with it? Are there consequences for your choice in the end of the game? The Directors Cut could help polish this experience as the world feels emptier the more side quests you do.
If they timeskipped us to adults, maybe expanded us to other locations such as London as the Ministry seems rather absent this story with only mere talk of them at times being present. Goblin treatment seems unresolved, we are oppressing them still. We can also have a morality system in the game as an adult, making combat choices more limited for the darker wizards out there, unless they want Ministry officials or demeantors coming after them. A way to escape Azkaban would be a tricker part to this equation.
We should as new professors gain access to all the common rooms too, and maybe Ominus eventually teaches us parseltongue and we open the Chamber of Secrets. We can also still evolve our shop, do everything as we could have as the fifth year student. We should also have the ability to fully unlock every talent.
    New Spell Options? :
Expecto Patronium - With a quiz to determine your patronus. The maxima version could be part of the talent menu.
Aguamenti Maxima - It would be used mainly for combat.
Stuplify - Maybe you take on a job at the Ministry and they teach you Stuplify to round up criminals to be sent to Azkaban? You could be an auror in a sense, and misbehave with dark magic may not land you in a cell as you only have access to combating dark wizards not other professors or anyone like that will have demeantors hunting you to stand trial? It doesn't have to be complicated.
Rictasempra - Aside from Expelliarmus, the tripping jinx could be quite useful in disarming someone temporarily.
Really I would say the game could use a ton of spells as we never had the experience of being an adult in the wizarding world with such the consequences of being a dark wizard. Maybe you are given a ciriculum to teach for your students and you are "reminded" of the spell or taught it? Maybe your classroom becomes like the Room of Requirements and you can decorate it, set it up with a dummy for demonstrations? There are so many options you can use to expand this series.
My favorite part is collecting spells and although the spell belt can be dauntingly annoying to shift between, it is very fun placing new spells in different places. Maybe an NPC is a new buddy for you and intercepts you before you are carted by the Ministry and you pay them back? I hope Natti heals, maybe Sebastian becomes the new Voldemort, and Poppy becomes the new creature professor? Maybe Almet also becomes a professor? Maybe you are appointed as headmaster at some point as Professor Black is horrible at the job?
I also hope more character surnames appear from the books, as the new ones are alright but you mean to tell me there weren't any Malfoys? There weren't any Snapes? Did a Great Migration happen after we went to Hogwarts or something?
I just hope we get lots of new spells, truly become a part of this world rather than using it as our combative playground, which even though I am in Ravenclaw, mainly utilize the Cruciatus curse.
Thank you Avalanche for making a wonderful game. OH ANOTHER IDEA, maybe runecrafts to make spells? This could be really fun and a few combinations to create spells of your own for the game that don't necessarily rely on lore, such as Levicorpas? Indicastrus? They are Latin-based. Maybe use our shop to do tarot or crystal readings for spare coin?

In the sequel I would love to see the story line of James and Lily Potter as students with Snape. How Dumbledore became Headmaster, how all the teachers came to be, like McGonagall, Flitwick, Trelawney, Hagrid etc. and have the story run with the beginnings of Tom Riddle turning into Voldemort , the formation of the Death Eaters, and the ending of the game being the birth of Harry Potter himself with the ending as The Philosopher's Stone started with Dumbledore and McGonagall placing Harry on the Dursley's doorstep ! I think it would tie in beautifully with the games and the movies !

I love this game, getting to explore a world I grew up reading and watching movies about in such detail is amazing, especially as my own character and in my favorite house. But, there are some downsides, there's really not an easy way to keep track of thing you find in menus, especially if you are trying to get trophies (especially the cast the ancient magic finisher on every single enemy (not including bosses) trophy) there is no way to determine who you casted it on. So if you are down to 1 enemy remaining, you have to go through all 68 of them to find the one you need, the sequel needs a better system in place. Another downside is the fact that not every icon shows up on the map unless you are really close to it and revelio it to death.

All we get now is horror games, souls style games, open-world games or live service crap. what happened to games being fun and different, look at the PS1 AND PS2 eras there were none of these cookie-cutter games where everything plays and looks very similar just with different characters and locations, back then developers used imagination and most games were very different from each other not like now with your cod 97, FIFA 3000, Assassins Creed 24 or fallout 79 they're all the same, games have become boring.
