Doug, thanks for the actually fairly balanced review of a car you obviously don't love. The only nitpick I'd offer is that the wing, despite "flopping around" when you close the hatchback, can still make downforce. To wit: 1) check out the "floppy" wings on F1 cars in recent seasons. 2) simply by lowering pressure behind the car, the wing could be helping the diffuser under the car work better. I raced a formula car for years and this was something we focused on: not just the wing producing downforce, but its integration into the comprehensive aero approach for the car. Just FYI. Please keep the reviews coming!
I can tell you something for certain: the aerodynamic design of a formula car, of any kind, will have tons more impact on that car's performance than whatever little DRS-style flaps you attach to a Honda Civic. On a basic level, the aero kit on a Civic isn't producing much downforce - particularly not relative to the amount of weight the car itself is putting on the tires. Although a DRS-style system would certainly make a big impact on a car with a more focused aerodynamic concept - say, a hypercar like the Valkyrie, whose entire design concept is founded on leveraging Venturi tunnels and a simple rear wing for backend downforce - it has little to no impact on a car like the Civic. I'm 100% sure that if you strip the Civic Type R's aero pieces off of it, the performance with everything else identical will be the same, if not better thanks to all of that lost weight.
not even a challenger hellcat redeye has all that aero... and it tops out @203mph... this thing wont get anywhere near those speeds.. so its just for looks
@@TheAow4321 "just for looks"...Not true. When driving it at high speed you can actually feel the wing plant the car firmly to the road. The wing is big and it really works. The car is extremely stable at high speeds.

@@M54B30_fan The painfully fake vents up front is all I know that is not doing anything. Everything else is functional aero at high speeds. The hood scoop provides cooling to the engine. Not sure how that qualifies it as fake.
@@gr33nspan my bad you’re right about the hood scoop, damn thing i was reading before said they were fake, but they were wrong. Does cool and lower lift at higher speed because takes air out of engine bay.

thats just bs, you are not a car enthusiast if youre not willing to explain your hobby to others. How shall new comers get into this when everyone would think like you did... @Rain Norris: rice means Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements but the meaning has expanded to absurd performance mods like a huge exhaust system for your 4 cyl, that doesnt even produce enough exhaust to use it or adding a giant wing on the back, that is not designed for your car and so does not add any downforce but adds air resistance making your car actually go slower. It has become a meme for overtuned absurd modded cars that shall look like race cars but are modded cheap and dont perform. People even started to call bad paintjobs or a bad fitting bodykit "rice" just because it was a bad job done, something a race car would never have because money is not an issue there. just google for more info. ;)
Thomas Gipson you must not kno shit about cars don't need much torque to torque steer. Not defending the car cuz I don't like it myself. I prefer the focus rs
Torque steer is caused from a difference in length of cv axles. it's really hard to get a car with a larger transaxel engine to not have disproportionally uneven axles in the front, which nets a difference in parasitic loss of each wheel, producing torque steer. That's why it is way more common in FWD cars
@Sassy The Sasquatch It does increase horse power believe it or not. The faster you get the exaust out, the better because pressure build up decreases horse power. If you like, I will send you an article that explains it more in detail.
Christ help me A wing still serves a purpose on a FWD car. Sure not a slow one because you're not gonna get up to speeds where it's necessary but it still provides downforce to the rear wheels which prevents the back end from swinging out like with most hatchbacks like this
Most "carbon fiber" you see is actually fake. If it has perfect weaves seen thru the epoxy, it's more for show. Real carbon fiber has really dozens of irregular patches as seen thru a clear epoxy.
Damn Doug, who hurt you? I get that you're allowed to be critical as a critic but you're a car guy for god's sake, why are you bashing Aero components on a car designed for racing on a track? "What are these things??" They're called vortex generators, and they are on the roof to funnel air to the spoiler. Yes, a FWD track car has a spoiler because, as a car enthusiast you should know this, *weight transfer* exists. And I love how you *only* mentioned the fake vents and never even bothered to explain the functional vents for the hood and for the wheel wells. Sure, let's talk performance. A FWD car has a slower launch than AWD cars, wow thanks for that insight. It is a full second slower, but you even fail to mention that on the Nurburgring it is almost 15 seconds faster than the Focus RS and the STi. Honda did not build this car with straight-line speed in mind, maybe that's why the didn't feel the need to tout it as a selling point to you.
Finally someone who knows what he is talking about! I was gonna talk about the vortex generators as well if this comment did not exist already. This comment should be at the top! And forgot to mention that the third central and smaller exhaust pipe has its purpose as well! It is not there for design only. It's easy to criticise and talk shit even if you don't know all the facts.

Seems fair, considering the quality difference between Honda and the other brands, which Doug "forgot" to mention. But hey, at least he knows to bitch about the same thing as every other reviewer with any other car: The interior plastics. As if interior plastics would be the cause of Subaru head gaskets blowing up
The spoiler is supposed to bounce so that the elastic force of its size doesnt have to concentrate on one part of the trunk. It disperses across the wing. My STI wing shakes too
Why is Honda proud of the fact that it's $2000 odd bucks cheaper than the competition? If this car was AWD the starting price point would cost the same as a WRX STI or Focus RS.
ring times aren't impressive and probably are inconsistent diffrent drivers different road conditions diffrent tires not all the shifts were 100% perfect the ring is a like a math problem with 160 variables also subarus ra got under 7 minutes (i can't speak for ford but hey, the rs has a drift mode)
Nimdonomuskid ring times are impressive its just when a Honda civic kills it everyone bases ring times like they dont matter. The ring is the longest and most physically demanding track used for performance testing. Yes they use different drivers but they are all hired professionals paid to do one thing, set the fastest production lap in whatever car. Most lap times are warm summer days where tires will have more grip. Each car must use the OEM tire which have to bee street legal. It's a 7 - 8 min long track with a fast car, obviously every shift won't be 100%. And its was the STI Type RA NBR which is not even street legal that set a time of 6:57
For the run, Honda used a pre-production model, which is said to have been "technically representative of production specification". The car had a full floating roll cage for safety reasons, which did not provide any additional rigidity to the body frame according to Honda, and to compensate for the added weight, the rear seats and Display Audio system were removed. Moreover, the Nurburgring record for front-wheel drive production cars was achieved using street legal, track-focused tires. Not bashing it, but just mentioning that it wasn't even a production car that beat the time..
Kyle Just Kyle if it’s an FWD electric or hybrid car vs an AWD fuel car, then maybe not but if they have the same type of engine, then AWD is faster off the line than FWD
Ive never seen a normal person seeing a type R and saying "Wow that is a beautiful car". This thing looks like a childs toy, I cant believe how a grown human being can drive around in that xD
Totally disagree with this guy testing the spoiler by slaming the hatch hard and claiming it cant push the car downward. The parachutes arent hard either but still can slow down a person from falling 120mph till 17mph, cant it? Its not about soft or hard material on directing the air flow.
The car has its pros and cons, but at the end of the day its a amazing car for the price, thats the point. Its under 40k and does everything very well, overall its a great car.
A car that a 40 yrs old can afford but won't buy because it looks like a car for a 16 yr old, which by the way can't afford its price. Car looks ridiculously over designed.
Honda is just responding to all the ricers who riced their old civics, they will be buying this like crazy since it already comes with terrible body kit.
It is because you dont know nothing about this car... type R is the car people between 30 - 50 years old people like to buy, this is an exclusive car... This car is simply amazing, if you dont like exotic style buy a Focus Rs or a Golf GTi, you can go on the road and people think it is a 1.4tdi...
Despite Doug's opinion that the Civic Type R is not the best performance car, it is worth noting that Motor Trend compared the Type R to the Subaru WRX STI and the Nissan 370Z in a track driving competition and named the Type R as the winner because it handled the curves better and kept its grip on the road through tight curves, while the Subaru slid a bit and used its AWD to "claw it's way" through the curves. Even the 370Z had to work to keep its grip on the road at times. All three cars in this competition were driven in stock condition...no special upgrades. More horses may be better off the line, but it doesn't always win.
The aero on this car is fully functional not just for show as Honda have explained and in the UK on the gt model we have parking sensors all round. I guess those hole on yours are maybe prep hole to put your own in? Who knows. But before you do a review on these type of cars perhaps you should do some research as it seem like you're just hating on the type r and have no clue. As for the rear wing flexing when you close the boot, it is supposed to have flex it wasnt by mistake, it needs to be flexible when going at high speeds to be entirely functional. I cringed at this review I've never done that before watching car reviews. Only thing I could agree on in this review is the black patches on rear bumper.
Andrea Crespo The car is symmetrical, and aside from the wheels there is nothing circular on the body. Perhaps some other adjectives could be more accurate. Curvy? Angular? Wedge-shaped? Incongruous? Complex?
Oh puhlease, aero on this car? At this speed and weight? Fuck off bruce L and fuck off Honda. Utter BS. Maybe at flat out speeds in a straight line, but anything else? Nissan GTR would like a word with you.
Most of Doug's videos are great. But he missed a few points: - The reason it's FWD is because Honda stated it follows the long tradition of Type R cars being FWD - Horsepower - on the dyno it puts down 296hp to the wheels! Doug is missing this fact in comparison to the Sti and the Focus RS. Those AWD cars lose a lot more power through the drive train. - 0-60 time - the AWD cars can launch harder off the line and will have a better 0-60 time. But from a roll the Type R is going to be very quick. It will definitely walk away from a stock Sti and give a RS a good run for its money. - Torque curve - the Type R has a wide torque curve that hits its peak at 2500 rpms and holds until 4500 where it gradually drops off. This is a big advantage over the Sti that only hits peak torque at 4000 rpms. Overall, the Type R should be a really fun car to drive.
blackvr4tt to me the car is the modern tragedy of corporate not allowing anything that won't "sell" into the market, if it was a real type-r why would it have 5 doors and cupholders, it would be about shaving off every unnecessary gram of weight and an incredible car/driver experience, they did good on the second part but not so much the first
By far the only critical comment that has any weight. Everyone keeps saying "aerodynamics", "3 pipes for better sound". Then again he did seem to be having fun while driving it.
Agreed. I also noticed that, and correct me if I'm wrong, he didn't even mention weight. If we're talking hot hatches, usually that's a pretty important metric to consider. This review just didn't seem as thorough as some of the others I've seen, such as Engineering Explained's review of the same car. But I do agree with Doug on many points such as the quietness, the styling, and the blank buttons.
Well, the thing is, this car isn't marketed to someone who has a Viper and used to have a Vantage. It's pretty much your average Joe's fancy hot hatch. A little bit of customizing might make it a nice little track car.
Inspiration _ did you hear what he said about the aftermarket segment around 13:10? It's still only front wheel drive, how much more power is going to transfer through those wheels? You'd have better luck removing things off this, or just starting with a better (not fwd) platform altogether
I've had the Type R for 3 years now its funny how all these automotive journalist say how ugly it looked yet I keep getting compliments about how nice the car looks left and right. Many people really do like this car and the way they are holding it's value it seems to me people out there disagree with the "bad looks"
I literally have taken corners faster than a Mclaren 570s when I am at the track. These are no joke once you out wide wheels and 200tw tires on them almost a fwd supercar.

@AlasTVRisHere Impreza isn't just faster in 0-60 time, but also in 1/4 mile. I also believe it would beat the civic in most tracks, for example in Tsukuba. The civic has only higher mid speed and top speed, but other than that Impreza is prettier, sounds better, overall faster and more exciting to drive thanks to AWD.
@AlasTVRisHere sorry for late reply. Idk on what kind of track did motortrend tested it, but I just can't see a STI loosing against FK8 on Tsukuba or in 1/4 mile. STI has AWD and shorter gears, so it has advantage in short straights and small tracks. FK8 could only win in longer straights, and longer tracks, because it has better power/weight ratio and longer gears. And even if it's slower there, it still looks better, sound better and it's more fun to drive...Honda is my favorite car brand, but the sports cars they are making recently are just terrible..I think this Civic is at least much better than the new NSX, only the design is terrible and overall it doesn't have that Type R "aura" anymore, like other Type R cars. But that's just my opinion. If you own this car and you like it, I'm glad for it.
All of the complaints in the first few minutes was purely about how he didn’t like the wing, or wondered what fins were for...this is one of the few hot hatches with a functional wing. Also the wheel arches? Those are there, to direct air to the wing. Also the rear wing? Already proven to work at high speed. I know, the sound is shit, the appearance is flamboyant, but everything you see there as far as wing goes and find is FUNCTIONAL!
Like honestly they are so mad. These type of car company's are about saving money an not putting any real emotion or are barely trying now a days. also car standards are a pain but i mean, this isn't a hot hatch like it use to be. it sounds like a stock civic lmao.... like we at least want a tuned sounding car. this car is beat by a hyundai with less power. xD
no, but he had an ax to grind obvious whether you are a Honda fan or not. Anyone who is supposed to be an automotive journalist should know by now a lot the car's design is what yielded the Nurenburg ring record. These are functional parts outside of the front bumper. Same guy that during Golf R review said it was a sharp and great handling car and 8 out of 8 in performance compared to Civic Type R.....I think he was just on his period during this review.

Doug the type of guy to believe that aerodynamics don’t apply to front wheel drive cars.
not even a challenger hellcat redeye has all that aero... and it tops out @203mph... this thing wont get anywhere near those speeds.. so its just for looks

@@evan8tor21 Id wager it could outturn the hellcat redeye without all that over the top aero
@@TheAow4321 "just for looks"...Not true. When driving it at high speed you can actually feel the wing plant the car firmly to the road. The wing is big and it really works. The car is extremely stable at high speeds.
@@MsBigtom Its over the top.. its not a hypercar.. I get the same feeling of planted-ness in my scat pack with its little duckbill spoiler. And i can guarantee Ive hit a higher speed in this car than a type r will...

thats just bs, you are not a car enthusiast if youre not willing to explain your hobby to others.
How shall new comers get into this when everyone would think like you did...
@Rain Norris:
rice means Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements but the meaning has expanded to absurd performance mods like a huge exhaust system for your 4 cyl, that doesnt even produce enough exhaust to use it or adding a giant wing on the back, that is not designed for your car and so does not add any downforce but adds air resistance making your car actually go slower. It has become a meme for overtuned absurd modded cars that shall look like race cars but are modded cheap and dont perform. People even started to call bad paintjobs or a bad fitting bodykit "rice" just because it was a bad job done, something a race car would never have because money is not an issue there. just google for more info. ;)
This car can handle better and accelerate faster than whatever you might have now. And those bodykits and wing is there for lots of reasons.

chemicalcorral not enough torque to torque steer lmao
Thomas Gipson you must not kno shit about cars don't need much torque to torque steer. Not defending the car cuz I don't like it myself. I prefer the focus rs
Torque steer is caused from a difference in length of cv axles. it's really hard to get a car with a larger transaxel engine to not have disproportionally uneven axles in the front, which nets a difference in parasitic loss of each wheel, producing torque steer. That's why it is way more common in FWD cars

The one thing I hate most, on any car, is fake carbon fiber.
Don't forget a spoiler on FWD
Christ help me A wing still serves a purpose on a FWD car. Sure not a slow one because you're not gonna get up to speeds where it's necessary but it still provides downforce to the rear wheels which prevents the back end from swinging out like with most hatchbacks like this
+Anthony Fulton ok got it
Most "carbon fiber" you see is actually fake. If it has perfect weaves seen thru the epoxy, it's more for show. Real carbon fiber has really dozens of irregular patches as seen thru a clear epoxy.
Tucsonan Dude bullshit. Look at a Pagani, or the door sills of the Porsche 918. It's uniform and 100% real. If it's irregular, it is poorly laid.

Maybe he got his ass kicked by a type R
Finally someone who knows what he is talking about!
I was gonna talk about the vortex generators as well if this comment did not exist already.

But can your Imprezza OR Focus RS go 7 mins around the 'Ring?
...
...
...
Guessed so.
ring times aren't impressive and probably are inconsistent
diffrent drivers
different road conditions
diffrent tires
not all the shifts were 100% perfect
the ring is a like a math problem with 160 variables
also subarus ra got under 7 minutes
(i can't speak for ford but hey, the rs has a drift mode)

After I drive my wife around I’m gonna give it a Doug score

I guess those hole on yours are maybe prep hole to put your own in? Who knows. But before you do a review on these type of cars perhaps you should do some research as it seem like you're just hating on the type r and have no clue. As for the rear wing flexing when you close the boot, it is supposed to have flex it wasnt by mistake, it needs to be flexible when going at high speeds to be entirely functional. I cringed at this review I've never done that before watching car reviews. Only thing I could agree on in this review is the black patches on rear bumper.
@@andreacrespo891 styling is always down to personal preference. And it's a hot hatch.
Andrea Crespo The car is symmetrical, and aside from the wheels there is nothing circular on the body. Perhaps some other adjectives could be more accurate. Curvy? Angular? Wedge-shaped? Incongruous? Complex?
@@andreacrespo891 yeah, most cars have circular wheels...
Oh puhlease, aero on this car? At this speed and weight? Fuck off bruce L and fuck off Honda. Utter BS. Maybe at flat out speeds in a straight line, but anything else? Nissan GTR would like a word with you.
Andrea Crespo lmao you ugly!!you sound mad you dont have 36k to spend and you obviously dont know much about the car
Most of Doug's videos are great. But he missed a few points:
- The reason it's FWD is because Honda stated it follows the long tradition of Type R cars being FWD
- Horsepower - on the dyno it puts down 296hp to the wheels!
FWD vehicles can't have more than 400hp, at least to be drivable.
They kept it FWD because there is a tradition about it...
But it really kills the perfomance that it could have, but it's a very well made car and they did everything to try to avoid "FWD car problems".
100% i get into many convos at gasstations and am honored to tell people about the car.. alot of ppl ask the same thing.. the car come stock with the body like that, how fast is it, and is that really a honda hahah.. I agree, I get more ppl who love the style and are very interested in it
im sorry to break it to you guys but people with actual taste will say its just a rice shitbox, and it is

I thought it’s been proven the r is faster than sti.
No, it isn't trust me
@AlasTVRisHere Impreza isn't just faster in 0-60 time, but also in 1/4 mile.
It’s quicker than the sti. Rs and golf. The only thing they have over it beating it to 60 by less than a second.
@@Fadic4 1/4 mile and smaller tracks, don't forget about that.

Dougs face: *V-TEC just kicked in yo.*
All of the complaints in the first few minutes was purely about how he didn’t like the wing, or wondered what fins were for...this is one of the few hot hatches with a functional wing. Also the wheel arches? Those are there, to direct air to the wing. Also the rear wing? Already proven to work at high speed.
I know, the sound is shit, the appearance is flamboyant, but everything you see there as far as wing goes and find is FUNCTIONAL!
eliarevalo yes and the fake vents are made to be modded just like the mk5 supra
At high speeds ? What 120 ? hahahaha honda rice trash
Yeah and all those fake vents are also functional right?

It can go 270kph tho and those fins will help the car over 200kph

So many Honda owners hating on Doug for not drooling over a barely special car
Like honestly they are so mad. These type of car company's are about saving money an not putting any real emotion or are barely trying now a days. also car standards are a pain but i mean, this isn't a hot hatch like it use to be. it sounds like a stock civic lmao.... like we at least want a tuned sounding car. this car is beat by a hyundai with less power. xD
Well this car does only cost 35,000...
no, but he had an ax to grind obvious whether you are a Honda fan or not.
@@TheRebuilt1 Honda Type R doesn't hold the Nurburgring FWD record, the Renault Megane smoked it by almost 4 seconds

A MINIVAN, YIKES!

I got a Toyota Sienna van because a rental company rented my original car out from underneath me. It was a major upgrade, and no shit, it was a pretty decent V6. Almost 300hp in a minivan was surprising.
Lol :D TIME FOR DAAAAAAD
*insert v8 burble from a 70s cadilac...
Umm.. That 0-60 is pretty impressive for a fwd, stock hatch. No idea why he compared it's acceleration to 4wd hatches?
Because they’re in a similar price range and they’re all hot hatches
When a WRX STI and a Honda Civic have kids!

Why?
Fuenf Bart tbh he had no fucking clue what he was talking about with this car. I’m not even a jdm fan but Honda came out swinging with this one.
@@jakehart7617I'm a die hard Honda fan & I disagree. If they had made a 2 door hatch version of this instead of the 4 door crossover-roach looking thing. It would've been great.
Driv300mph he JUST did!
No performance car should ever have an electronic parking brake.
Vegaspsycho thank you! Finally someone said it. Stsly a heavy ass electric brake in a "fast car" wtf
Vegaspsycho deal breaker for me tbh
Vegaspsycho how much are you going to use the parking brake on a fwd car? You guys weren't buying the fucking care anyway... Don't give me this "deal breaker tbh" bullshit
"for me" indicating personal preference. and you use the parking brake on an fwd as much as you would any car
geryl vinoya for parking. Parking brake. Not sure what kind of driving you do in a fwd car that having a button instead of a handle on your brake makes it a deal breaker
When the engine stated at 4:02 it was just pure disappointment 😂 You think it does this ROAAARRR when it starts, but... it just starts
Alexander Alexander 😂😂😂
Because it is not in the roar that should count but the performance which it has in fact not only delivered but rewritten. Fact it does it suceeded in 2 wheel drive is even more astonishing. But for the fickle and shallow, judgement is assessed on basic noises, paper power figures and peer approval. lol
Yeah I get it, silent but deadly. But it still sounds like it's got no balls!... no pun intended.🙄
Lol it sounds just like my '16 Civic EX-T
Not everyone likes noisy cars that draws attention to themselves
This dude sounds like he was rooting for this car to fail before even seeing it or driving it
But all of his complaints were grounded in how it looks and drives
But this car is the fastest of his category on nurburgring, right?
Cam Hendrix its not hard to be first in the fwd category, if almost noone makes fwd performance cars.
Cam Hendrix also nürburgring times are shit examples, becouse since nü is closed and not up to any race or anything car companies just go out to the track with a driver of thier choice and say…”ohhh we made the fastest car” wich is basicly a kart btw.... yes i am talking about ariel wich is a cheap detergent in my country btw😂... so its totally shit…if a race goes by normal rules and the cars have equal hp etc (like formula 1) its only the driver amd the position that matters. If we assume they use the same tires, and have the same amount of gas. Ppl like this are so boring… who tf cares about how a professional man can drive your car? If your gf needs to hide his dissapointment when your are in tears becouse the golfr is already at the secound light while you still seatching for 60mph?😂😂😂😂 but i am not a golf fan...basicly any car can beat this shit, golfr, focus rs, not to talk about bmw, the rs3, and the mercedes a45amg.
This car looks like the kinda car i made in 2006 in nfs carbon...
Its a car for ppl who like to spend money on performance cars but too cheap to buy an actual performance car for +2k
That dosent make sense.
Cam Hendrix I agree. If my friend had one, I would be excited and begging to drive it. But the package isn't worth the price IMO, and that's not including how the dealerships have been marking them up 10K+. Even at MSRP, you don't get the potential that's offered by any of its competitors.
Clock Big what the hell are you babbling about??
Jonathan Bowen thats right, the hot hach its the most competitive group out there, becouse its the door to sports cars
The focus ra was 30 sec slower at Nürburgring and the Sti was 10 seconds slower🤷🏼♂️ I mean stats are stats
Jacob Gardner Out of the three what car would you rather have for longevity either three would be a major purchase so which one would you choose as far as reliability And so on? I don’t know about you but I’m taking the Honda I don’t care if it’s one second slower on the 0 to 60 lol
SALTY BIG MAD bronsexuals LECHOKE is GARBAGE exactly and others have compared all three and the type r won every time whether it be short or long circuits
Jacob Gardner Not only is that true, it’s also quite impressive since this thing is FWD and makes less horsepower.
Escort RS Cosworth was quicker on Nürburgring than Focus RS and Subaru STI, so I am not that impressed.
I'd rather take a base mustang
If some of you are pissed about the review or feel it's biased in someway is because that is the whole point of a review. You are supposed to watch several to conclude your final thoughts of the car
