No need to explain yourself Doug. Some people just make their own assumptions without knowing facts first. I’m now looking forward to seeing you trash the new Blazer in an upcoming video.
If you're planning on doing this again I would suggest reviews on cars from real car movies from the 70's such as The Gumball Rally or The General Lee.
The black carpet shows reddish because it has faded in the sun. The black felt on the radio door was for an interior light we used to put light on Suki’s face.
in case anyone missed it, the car's interior was just made to look good on camera, it didn't have to actually look good up close. just making sure in case you missed the 8 million times he mentioned it.
Doug you weren't being stared at for driving a pink s2000. You were being stared at because you were driving THE pink s2000. Suki's car is an icon. Every one was wondering is that really "that" car ? Is it real? Did I just see her car? It is a completely different level of attention grabbing. It would be like taking Paris Hilton to dinner vs. an unknown "super" model. A model on your arm will get you looks. But Paris? Paris will cause a riot.
Embarrassing to drive around LA? Are you serious? That is such an iconic car... those who are worthy, will appreciate it when see it on the street. This car will probably turn more heads than any car you have reviewed this year. I'm a guy and I would kill to get to drive around this piece of history
Exactly ! If anyone is embarrassed to drive this iconic car then he doesn't deserve to drive it in the first place. Not to mention it´s a one of a kind model.
The info about the jump crash was almost accurate. In fact, the remote driver of the s2000 was also in the chase vehicle that went off the ramp. And, because the remote rig was temporarily setup in the passenger seat, when the stunt car went off the ramp and crashed, the steering rig was pushed out by the airbag, injuring the remote driver of the s2000. But despite all that, the remote driver was able to safely stop the s2000. I know all this because the remote driver was my father. Great video though! I remember seeing all the different versions of the cars on set out in Florida as a kid. Movie magic is something special.
Doug, I can answer a few of your questions. Though I was only a background actor in the first fast and furious, and also a stand-in for Vin Diesel, I have about 25 years experience in the industry, so I can tell you some of the secrets, to the best of my knowledge, of how the industry worked these quirks. I actually have a picture of me next to this car on the universal lot...the back lot where the public is not allowed, so it was another one of the production cars, just as sloppily put together as this one. 1) I bet you the fabric on the panel that hides the stereo was either added for the lighting department, so they can stick a Velcro light on there when needed and take it off without a severe modification when not needed, which is also pretty handy if the unit was flipped open it wouldn’t upset the sound department if that lid was clicking on whatever it was resting upon while driving it for interior shots. 2) TVs were just starting to be integrated into vehicles at this time, so even a sloppy installation was a cool installation. People put these things in the center of steering wheels, in their visors, anywhere with often a miss shaped frame around it. But that was OK. This was 2003 as you said. 3) The missing seatbelt was again most likely due to the sound department. If you were driving this car with cameras mounted to it, or even this thing on a flatbed camera truck, these little things like seatbelts make noise. Through the sound department can tape them up and do this and that, but why not just get rid of it altogether. And that’s what they did in this case. 4) the rear view mirror. I’m only guessing in this, your guess could also be correct, but I would say that one of their shots required a specific angle, they knew it ahead of time so they modified the mirror for this. Just like when you watch a film and they remove the headrest from the front seats so you can see the passengers in the back, or see the cameras point of view from the backseat looking towards the front, it’s a modification so that you can see the actor, or in this case maybe the actors point of view. 5) it’s interesting they didn’t redo the shag carpets on the seats for the museum. Kudos to them keeping it original from how the production used it and how it sustained life over the years. The seats were clearly pink in the movie. In fact I can send you pictures of the car that I took pictures of in 2005 or 2006 that the pink was only half faded away. These cars literally sit uncovered at the universal lot, exposed to sun, so that is why the seats take on a gray tint, because it is simply the pink sun faded into that color. 6) at least this car has an engine. And you can tell the way the low profile tires in the front touch the fenders, if you didn’t open the hood. In the scenes that I shot on the first fast and furious when the flames were being thrown out of the rear exhaust, the engines were actually removed from these vehicles. All of the vehicles. The Integra the supra… All of them. This was for safety reasons as they actually had pyrotechnic crews run their special effects lines underneath the vehicle so that flames would shoot out the exhaust pipes in those close-ups. Over several takes, the bumpers actually started melting away. But you don’t see this in the movie. They had other cars another bumpers to replace it for the next scene. 7) The missing trunk. Though I’d assume that they had a deal with Honda that gave them a bunch of these cars, but they might’ve also had cars that were missing trunk features so if they didn’t need it, why add it. For example I worked on gone in 60 seconds and the BMW 5 series that they trashed were actually already trashed as BMW test cars that were not even street legal, beyond salvage, vehicles. They simply use their resources they have to get any vehicle they can get, and they may be missing a few parts.
@Imagineth I was giving an example, I said "like," of why they move things around in cars. Though there was no back seats in this car, they place camera's behind the front seats to capture certain angles of the driver or front passenger in two seater cars just like they do with 4 seater cars for "POV" shots, etc. Hope this helps.
Wow amazing reply with so much great information! Thanks for taking the time to write all of this up. Also great work playing Vin Diesels stand in, I didn't even notice you which probably means you did a great job! hahaha Thanks again!
@@LarryFish3rman Stand-in is different from Stunt double. I merely had to sit in the car while the camera worked out the angle, focus and the lighting dept did their things. So you wouldn't notice me :) It simply allows Vin a break to rehearse his lines or relax in between scenes. Then when they are ready for him, I step out and he steps in my place and they roll cameras. Still exciting to be part of.

They've never felt the same without Paul. His love for cars went with the movies, and without it the movies just feel like an empty body being pushed around by Universal. God this car is such a childhood dream for me, its still is surprisingly. I know if ever I win a lottery the first thing I would do is get this car or atleast have a custom made exactly like this
I'm a camera operator, I've worked on a few BTS of TV commercials and the like and it's really cool talking with the prop makers. It's always a mad rush behind the scenes to get things fixed / mods done for the director before all the actors are in place on set. It's why these things can be rushed. Also bath mats were probably used because they're very easy to obtain and aren't bespoke in any way. This is really normal in movie props and effects as it makes more economic sense and also makes spare parts super easy. It's also why enthusiasts can recreate a lot of movie props to 95% accuracy, it's super neat.
I can imagine, and there being a ton of other cars to add with their own separate copies including the hero car. They can't do everything 100% right it's just too much work giving the limited time for filming and everything. They're only supposed to look good enough for the film and everything else well, they really don't expect anyone to actually get close and look at all the details.
The steering wheel isn't directly related to handling. It's just aesthetics. The actual car handles pretty good and having a wide body kit means it has even more grip with bigger tires.
After this, I've rewatched the first race of 2 Fast 2 Furious and any other scene where the S2000 is featured prominently, and I must say that all those imperfections pointed out by Doug were not visible at all. Maybe it was camera angles or even CGI edits in places, but they did a great job (in hindsight, by the way, it wouldn't have been bad to plainly see those tacky jobs: one could assume that said jobs were made by "hobby" tuners, maybe Suki herself, people that didn't have the precise tools and techniques that a professional tuner has, not to mention the necessary cash. This was often the case with car enthusiasts that wanted to have a go at modifying their cars on a budget).
Exactly, he talks about how "bad" all the mods are, when in fact this car absolutely represents the home built tuners of the era. There's cars all over this country that have sat for the same period that look as rough yet they were considered amazing builds in the age.
He literally reviewed a movie car before. In that video he said he makes exceptions for movie cars, like this s2000 and the Back to the Future DeLorean.
@@DJNADJIBBeatz Aw crap, yeah, now I remembered the video Craig Lieberman did on the Mustang, indeed, the RB in the Silvia was just a prop, the car was supposed to have it in the movie plot, but we only see the hood open on the wrecked one so movie magic...

The owner apears on the first movie he s the asian guy on the white civic on the first race with Dom , Ja Rule and brian , the one who s playing Gran Turismo before the race.

some of the work actually makes sense from a business standpoint. taking time to make a picture perfect car also takes lots of money. If you can save a bit of money that's the important part because it saves you money in the long-run.
I’m sure you know when they make this kind of stuff for movies and tv they are usually on a time crunch and eye to detail isn’t the top of their priority. The studio probably just had one or 2 shops build them all quickly.

tbf he said he would review movie cars without a second thought.

@@wooferjr169 In a way!!!
Yeah!!!
The steering wheel isn't directly related to handling. It's just aesthetics. The actual car handles pretty good and having a wide body kit means it has even more grip with bigger tires.
It's still an s2000
handling and steering are two totally different things chap
People here just probably read the title "Here's why I don't review modified cars" but didn't actually watched it.
But I don’t see any comments talking about how Doug shouldn’t review this cause it’s a modified car
There's cars all over this country that have sat for the same period that look as rough yet they were considered amazing builds in the age.

it must've been the pink, he'd probably rate Han's RX-7 a 10 on cool factor
That was fair, if anything too high. There are "cooler" cars from F&F and you should really never give out 10s, to give room for improvement. I think its more like a 6-7
I'm pretty sure Don's blacked out Charger from F&F will probably get a 10
