Very instinctive. When I had her in a daycare for a trip, she was the only dog who could smell the smoke from the small fire. She barked as hard as she could, which she barely does, so that staff could look for it. 4. Very generous to kids and puppies. She's not kind when grown-ups try to grabble her, or adult dogs are not able to read the body signs. When those things happen, she tries to warn them by staring back with scary eyes, and if it doesn't work, she does air snaps. However, she tolerated a little grabs and pinch from a toddler and gently educated puppies that tried to go up on her back. 5. Very mature. She did have a faze of messing around at home, but only until she was 8 months or so. After around 1 year old, I suddenly felt like I had a senior dog at home. She barely plays or even moves, but then when we go for a run, she could run like a greyhound for 3 hrs. 6. Very loyal. She could come at 3 times bigger dogs than her to protect me. One time, we were in a playground, and a very large German Shepherd and his owner came in. The Shepherd came to me with his hackles raised, and my Jindo came in between me and the Shepard. Suddenly, the Shepherd tried to make a move towards me, and my Jindo, who weighs only 33 pounds, squared her legs in front of the Shepard without hesitation. They got into a fight, and she got a scratch on her ear, but the Shepard got puncture wounds on his neck. I so freaking love my Jindo. She's just perfect, and I feel like her presence is more like human being than a dog.
I live in Canada and have the extreme pleasure of owning a Jindo. This is the first video about Jindos that REALLY knows what they are talking about. They are NOTHING like North American dogs. Training and bonding with my girl "Hiyan" has been the highlight of my life when it comes to dogs. So respectful, gentle to her family, loyal and obedient. She spends 99% of her time off leash now just following me around, happy to be with me leading and keeping her safe. I am going to find a way to get another Jindo again. My girl is 13 but still healthy as a horse and these dogs have good longevity, so another 5 years I am hoping at least.
Wow, that is fantastic. In addition to your girl being wonderful, it sounds like you have really put in the time and work to building a wonderful and respectful relationship with her so that she can be the dog she is. I do not have a Jindo as of now. I am in the beginning stages of doing my research, but the more I learn about them, the more I am realizing that one of these dogs would fit my lifestyle very well. Being someone who is not at all an impulsive decision maker, I don't see a Jindo in my life for at least two or three years. I would like to talk to a variety of Jindo owners, talk with breeders and really know what I'm in for before investing in one. I agree. Very informative video. I went from thinking they were a Japanese version of a German Shepherd to learning that they’re actually a Korean hunting dog along with facts about the breed.
Such a loyal, smart and clean dog, Korean Jindo! I wish I had own him/her one day. Now I'm so happy with my pomeranian. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
We had a jindo. In her prime, when we went out in the morning we would find up to six dead animals that she had killed overnight, all lined up neatly in a row on our lawn. That included pretty hard to kill animals like skunks and possums. She was an incredible hunter, but she didn’t distinguish between wildlife and other peoples pets, so if a cat came into our yard it was not a good outcome. She also was like Houdini when it came to escaping. We had to raise our 6-foot chain link 2 feet higher because she climbed it.
I commend this video for giving such well-informed, expert info. I agree with literally every single bit. Very impressed. I've had 5 jindos so far (mom and dad who were brought from the namesake Jindo island, and their three kids) and while they are not the easiest breed to train, I cannot imagine getting a different breed other than jindos now that I am familiar with them. They are not only clean and smart but also fiercely loyal, protective, and loving to a fault at the same time.. best qualities to have in your pups. It'd be awesome to have a couple of well-trained jindos as not just a part of the family but also as hunting companions... It'd be my dream really!! Jin-do dog has very wonderful habits , amazing characters and beautiful features and has many good points in the view of owner. We are surely proud of Jin-do dog as the one of the best dogs in the World.
We spent two years in South Korea and adopted a Jindo/Malinois mix while we were there. He has been such a good dog. We definitely can see the Jindo influence in him.
I have a 8 year old Mundo named Molly I have had other dogs growing up but nothing like my Jindo, We got her when she was 4 months old born in the US but we figured conceived in Korea long story, but we love her so much not as a dog but a part of the family and it is nice hearing very accurate info on the bread the one thing I did not hear mentioned is how sensitive they are to the family's feelings she can be like a therapist sometimes, again great video
My jindo dog has all the characteristics listed by her, except mine is suuuuper friendly and acts like a social diva. She loves seeing and being touched by strangers both humans and dogs. If i take her to a bar, she will try to say hello to every table and would join one of them😅 But she gets very wary of those who dont fit into the picture. For example, if a drunk person tries to touch her, she would bark. If she sees kids acting out of their way, she barks etc. So maybe because i tried to take to everywhere since she was puppy, she is comfortable mingling with strangers, but she has instinct to categorize what is ok vs not ok.
We had a border collie, jindo mix. He also had some German shepherd and Rottweiler in him. He was a very cool dog. Incredibly smart. A little hard to train at first but he learned very quickly (if that makes sense). He had an incredible amount of drive. Enjoyed hiking (though not always polite on the trail), sheep herding, dog parks and running off leash. He had some behavioral issues that we couldn’t train out of him, but we adopted him when he was close to 1 year old and he was not well socialized when we got him. He could be unpredictable around strangers. Not for everyone. Invest in training. Must be with an active and committed family. Very affectionate with the family, but would occasionally snap into “wild mode” seemingly at random.
Almost everything you said is correct, except that the Jindo will never be totally obedient to their owners, where “they will put their owners wishes above their own” (around 9:20). At least the one I had for a decade ABSOLUTELY will and did do that, with absolute love, respect and devotion. She was rescued from S. Korea. Also, we gave her direction, love, activity and a pack order from when she was 8 weeks old.
Excellent video. Thank you for the great insight and information. I learned more about this breed today, than the 2 1/2 years I was stationed in Korea, lol. Seriously, well done. In the area I was stationed, there were not many dogs at all, other than a few stray mixed breeds, and there weren't' many of them.
Dogumentary TV, Thank you very much for uploading this highly informative video. I have the following two questions though: 1) Given that this is a guard dog breed but weighs 50lbs at the maximum, how strong and agile are these dogs (comparable pound-for-pound to pitbulls?)? 2) Some double-coated breeds (e.g. Alabais and Kangals) can tolerate heat, others do not. Do Jindos tolerate heat? Thank you very much in advance for taking the time to answer my questions.
A rough measurement of strength for a Korean Jindo is they can take on most animals about 3x their body weight. Ie, a 40lb Jindo can take on 120lbs. (*This doesn’t translate into the sport of weight pulling however, and Jindos are able to pull weights much higher than that) 2) Jindos tolerate heat surprisingly well. Its a bit of a “mystery” how a double coated northern breed ended up developing as it did considering the warm, humid climate of Jindo Island, but they tolerate heat fairly well. Mine are here with us in Atlanta, Georgia USA. My Jaegu female is less tolerant because of her longer/darker coat than my shorter coated Hwanggu, but they are not left outside in the heat all day and have access to air conditioning. They tolerate hikes in the heat as long as they have access to fresh water and protection on their feet if the pavement is excessively hot to the touch.
@@kkeokjinjindo , Thank you very much for your very detailed reply. 1) Regarding strength, I am not concerned with weight pulling or any other such sports. I am interested in whether this breed can perform one of its most important functions: guarding and protecting its owners. While the ability to bring down adversaries 3x their weight is extremely impressive, most tough criminals are much heavier than 120 lbs and/or have combat experience. Pitbulls, for example, provided they are trained to guard and protect (something that is not part of their DNA; on the contrary), are only dangerous to big, tough criminals because they are very fast and agile (they jump directly to the throat or attack the genitals of their opponents). 2) Regarding the tolerance of heat of double-coated breeds, this is an important advantage of the Jindo (at least for me)! Also, it is a mystery to me why some double-coated breeds tolerate almost all types of weather (e.g. Alabai, Kangal, Jindo) while others would collapse if they did any activities in hot climates (or so people say on the internet).
@@JohnSmith-qy3nv Gotcha. A Jindo will primarily be a great deterrent (primitive phenotype, deep bark, many will likely not back down even sans-protection/IGP training), and it’s expected they will bite if their owner is physically assaulted. But their medium size and bite style isn’t going to hold down a criminal with one dog alone. They aren’t a “full grip” type of breed which uses their entire mouth to grip and hold on like you might see in a breed like Malinois. They are much more “bite and release and repeat”, but a Jindo should do enough damage to buy you time. (Speaking as someone who got involved in the breed primarily because I was looking for a spitz breed with guarding instincts)
visited Jindo island and brought my jindo(black and tan) from the island, there are companies to help with prep and paper work to bring them back to the States.
There were many native dogs on the Korean Peninsula, but 80 to 100 years ago, Japanese exterminated them all to obtain dog fur, leaving only the Jindo and Pungsan dogs. The Jindo dog is a loyal dog whose nature is most similar to that of a wolf. Japan is an island country, so there were no native dogs, but the Akita was bred to be similar to the Jindo dog dna, and the Shiba Dogs are also a member of the Jindo dog family and is a cute dog that was bred as a pet in Japan.
Not exactly true. The Akita and Shiba are both breeds that bred independently in Japan but like Jindos were selected for certain traits either thats definitely a more European thing. All of those spitz breeds share an ancestry with the New Guinea Singing Dog. Theres also 7 breeds from Korea not 2 however all are endangered due to the acts of the Japanese Pungsan, Jindo as you mentioned but also Donggyeongi Jeju Dosa Nureongi Sapsali
I learned a lot, thank you for covering this less common breed! They sound similar to my Akita (but smaller and my Akita has no desire to please people as she mentioned LOL).
One of my favorite dog breeds.... If they were not so incredibly rare here in western Europe, there would definitely be a jindo (or mix) in the future. I now have a distant cross (with husky, akita and white shepherd) of north Korean pungsan dog (his great-grandfather was one, from Korea Town in Vancouver ended up as a puppy at a native reservation near Vancouver... and there he bred a mix of Chow Chow, yellow labrador and Amstaff among others, of which one son was kept, and ended up wandering endless distances with his father through the Canadian wilderness, sometimes staying away for days or weeks... and the son was taken to the Netherlands by touring travelers). He will turn 15 in 2.5 weeks, and the deterioration is starting to go fast now... unfortunately. I also have a chronically ill shepherd podenco cross, and a mid content wolfdog with only German shepherd in the dog share. (And I know that many need help in Korea, also I know that some rescue organizations also ship to Europe.... but I don't feel like letting a dog fly halfway around the world in the cargo hold of an airplane with all the stress it causes, to give it a better life on the other side of the world).
@@genzen7302 Thank you very much for your thoughts. However, I do not think it is beneficial to fly a dog from Texas to the Netherlands, which is hardly different in terms of flight distance than flying a dog from South Korea to the Netherlands. I know that there are also shelters in Korea that fly to Western Europe, and I know that there are also Korean rescues coming to Western Europe via German organizations, and there is since 3 years also one in the Netherlands. At the moment it will not work anyway, because after the death of my dear old big friend last August, a little man has been taken into our house since 3 weeks ago. A Dutch farmer's fox terrier (a Dutch "boerenfoxhondje" a Russell-type terrier mix common on farms.), which I bought free quite near by (6km) from an old farmer, kept in a filthy concrete pen with straw in an old cold barn, without water and food, thin, lack of muscle, full of fleas and afraid of everything. And in the meantime he is flea-free, a nice weight, is becoming an increasingly beautiful little bundle of muscle and finds everything and everyone more and more fun to meet. But 3 dogs is really the maximum for me and my situation.. so for now it won't go anyway. But again, thank you 🙏
There were many Jindo dogs that lived in such bad conditions in Korea that they were sent abroad. As a Korean, I personally think that it would be better for the dogs to endure the short flight time and live a good life, as this would save their lives. In Korea, many animals are euthanized at animal shelters because they cannot find owners. (If they are not adopted within two weeks at state-run animal shelters, they are euthanized.)
I am Korean Jindo dog is a natural monument of Korea and is known as the cleanest dog in Korea have the ability to recognize the owner's disease by smellIf the dog keeps smelling you, go to the hospital and get all the medical tests you can get
Fits my dog to a T. DNA test said she’s a Jindo, we adopted her from the SPCA. She was in bad shape. She’s very quiet and anxious, very good dog, well behaved, but she doesn’t like to play or interact with active outside my husband and me.
The Jindo dog is a dog that was also used in Korea to hunt tigers and wild boars. Hunters would bring several Jindo dogs to hunt. The Jindo dogs would hunt in a cooperative manner, using their brains to figure out how to weaken the prey and corner it. In the process, they were very intelligent dogs that understood the hunter's commands well and thought a lot about how to weaken the prey and catch it.
My old mentor and friend Mr Kim introduced me to the Jindo in Shaker hts ohio back im 1993. Extremely tough dog. In KoreaThey also used the Jindo for dogfighting
@@ChosonJindosJindos can think.Doodles cannot.Jindos are dogs, much closer to a wolf than a doodle. The person who thinks a Jindo is strong headed should not get a real dog.
@@TiredofMorons Yep! One of the if not the closest breed genetically to a wolf. A wolf won’t follow if it doesn’t want to or have a leader they respect. Very capable of doing this thing called life alone, awesome dogs 🐕

Although I love this breed, the Jindo dog is not for the average person. Believe me when I say that they are not fully "Domesticated". They still have that wild wolf / coyote instinct to em which is dormant until the opportunity arises. Never have them off leash, no dog parks. Need to keep an eye on them all the time. Even if u have them in the yard, they find have a way to escape. Although they are known to find their way back home after escaping, it can lead to a lot of trouble (fighting or killing other dogs, biting people, running into the street getting hit by a car etc. Basically they are still WILD. They are awesome dogs if you are a hunter, VERY SMART DOGS, no training needed, they will track and kill their prey without you. Anyways, save yourself the trouble and stick with a doodle. Plus Jindos shed like crazy.
Wish I watched this video before trying to pet my girlfriend’s Jindo. He bit me the other day. He will take snacks from me no issue but won’t let me touch him.
You could easily have a Jindo in an apartment, super chill, if left to their own they may find ways to entertain themselves. super clean other than some hair you would need to collect. Definitely a dog to keep on a leash or long line especially if you don’t have great recall on your dog. Have a innate sense for chase. Constantly will look to expand their territory but have a great sense of direction and will find their way home. Some are more lucky than others. As will most dogs early recall training and socializing if a key for a well mannered dog.
I lived with my Jindo (plus a beagle/whippet mix) in an apartment for a year and she did just fine. That said - I would take them on frequent walks/hikes/ runs so they got plenty of exercise. She was always quiet in the apartment.
I have 2 rescue Korean Village dogs. While not technically Jindos, the video description matches really well. Amazing dogs, although they are completely unsocialized due to their unfortunate beginnings.
I was raised alongside a Jindo. Both my father and uncle had a deep appreciation for these dogs. Many Koreans, particularly the older generation, take immense pride in this breed and see it as a privilege to have one. While I understand their sentiment, it wasn't quite for me. Jindos can be rather reserved. They are very aloof and aren't affectionate at all. Personally, I much preferred my beagle.
It depends on the jindo. Mine is suuuuper affectionate and friendly (rated by her pet sitter as most affectionate dog) and you will see lots of jindos on youtube or instagram who are very friendly. It really depends on a bit of inborn personality and early exposure/environment as puppies

If i take her to a bar, she will try to say hello to every table and would join one of them😅
But she gets very wary of those who dont fit into the picture. For example, if a drunk person tries to touch her, she would bark. If she sees kids acting out of their way, she barks etc. So maybe because i tried to take to everywhere since she was puppy, she is comfortable mingling with strangers, but she has instinct to categorize what is ok vs not ok.
Jindo is very independent dog! I love them!
1. in(가족) & out(타인)의 명확한
I have 2, amazing dogs. Will always keep jindos.
Pride of Korea.
I have a black Jindo 😍🐕
Love this breed, so smart and easy to train. When they blow their coat, it's like Jindo confetti. Lol
I’ve learned that I have a Jin do yesterday after so many years. I love their on/off switch inside the house!
Korean jindos highly independent breed of dog I like them a lot
Excellent video. Thank you for the great insight and information. I learned more about this breed today, than the 2 1/2 years I was stationed in Korea, lol. Seriously, well done. In the area I was stationed, there were not many dogs at all, other than a few stray mixed breeds, and there weren't' many of them.
Dogumentary TV,
Thank you very much for uploading this highly informative video.
I have the following two questions though:
1) Given that this is a guard dog breed but weighs 50lbs at the maximum, how strong and agile are these dogs (comparable pound-for-pound to pitbulls?)?
2) Some double-coated breeds (e.g. Alabais and Kangals) can tolerate heat, others do not. Do Jindos tolerate heat?
Thank you very much in advance for taking the time to answer my questions.
A rough measurement of strength for a Korean Jindo is they can take on most animals about 3x their body weight. Ie, a 40lb Jindo can take on 120lbs. (*This doesn’t translate into the sport of weight pulling however, and Jindos are able to pull weights much higher than that)
2) Jindos tolerate heat surprisingly well.
@@kkeokjinjindo ,
Thank you very much for your very detailed reply.

All in all, a wonderful breed.
I wish you and your Jindo many, many years of happiness.
This was such a helpful video
visited Jindo island and brought my jindo(black and tan) from the island, there are companies to help with prep and paper work to bring them back to the States.
Awesome Korean Jindo!
I know of purebreed Jindos ready to adopt, in Texas. Let me know
This is awesome.
Theres also 7 breeds from Korea not 2 however all are endangered due to the acts of the Japanese
Pungsan, Jindo as you mentioned but also
Donggyeongi
Jeju
Dosa
Nureongi
Sapsali
I know of purebreed Jindos ready to adopt, in Texas. Let me know
@@genzen7302 Thank you very much for your thoughts.
Well said
Koreans value loyalty and an intrepid nature

I am Korean Jindo dog is a natural monument of Korea and is known as the cleanest dog in Korea have the ability to recognize the owner's disease by smellIf the dog keeps smelling you, go to the hospital and get all the medical tests you can get
I adopted a dog in Russia who was a Korean jindo (unbeknownst to me) she’s perfect they’re wonder dogs!
Fits my dog to a T. DNA test said she’s a Jindo, we adopted her from the SPCA. She was in bad shape. She’s very quiet and anxious, very good dog, well behaved, but she doesn’t like to play or interact with active outside my husband and me.
Very interesting breed
Such a beautiful animal. This presenter is so good she should could do documentaries
Literally my personality in a dog.
I know of purebreed Jindos ready to adopt, in Texas. Let me know
My old mentor and friend Mr Kim introduced me to the Jindo in Shaker hts ohio back im 1993. Extremely tough dog. In KoreaThey also used the Jindo for dogfighting
Dog fighting is barbaric and disgusting. Jindo lovers do not like the low intelligence of jerks that would even mention this.
Ugh. I hate that everywhere seems to have a history of humans getting off on dogfighting. Humans are such incredibly disappointing creatures.
Seem like a strong headed dog.
Yea.. not a lemming. A jindo will respect a good owner, very coequal. If you want a dog get a jindo; if you want a pet many other breeds out there.
@@ChosonJindosJindos can think.Doodles cannot.Jindos are dogs, much closer to a wolf than a doodle. The person who thinks a Jindo is strong headed should not get a real dog.

Jindo is very intellgent. If you don,t give them interests, they will cut the collar themselves and run away.
Please do a Basenji video
Plus Jindos shed like crazy.

normaly no. If you are good dog trainer it is possible
Mine Jindo Labrador mix is very prey driven.I allow her to be offleash in parks with no cars or beaches. She listens except when there is a squirrel.
Own Decision .. That was main reason Jindo failed test for LAPD K-9 unit test 2years ago.
Wish I watched this video before trying to pet my girlfriend’s Jindo. He bit me the other day. He will take snacks from me no issue but won’t let me touch him.
Resembles the husky and Shibu Inu
The ancestor of the Shiba Inu is the Jindo Dog.
Thank you for the information! Sounds like it's not an apartment dog at all and as with all dogs, should stay on a leash.
@@ChosonJindos Hey thanks man! Appreciate the knowledge.

I lived with my Jindo (plus a beagle/whippet mix) in an apartment for a year and she did just fine. That said - I would take them on frequent walks/hikes/ runs so they got plenty of exercise. She was always quiet in the apartment.
We have those they are called foxes😂😂😂
Would this be a good companion for a basenji?
I think so, especially if they grew up together but you should talk with a breed expert before making that move.
Not a good idea. The Jindo dog is a dog with a strong sense of hierarchy.

🤣 lol
So soon the AKC will f#@k it up
To my knowledge, there isn’t too much interest among breed enthusiasts in moving Jindos into full recognition with the AKC anyway.
I have 2 rescue Korean Village dogs. While not technically Jindos, the video description matches really well. Amazing dogs, although they are completely unsocialized due to their unfortunate beginnings.
Its very likely good majority of street dogs are mixed with jindos. If socialized early on, they can be super friendly too:)
Wow, so you mean they don't torture and eat all their dogs ???
Magnificent breed, such a noble dog. I would love to own one someday. 🐚
