My grandparents own a Phu Quoc dog too. And I have to say he’s super smart and loyal. Like he‘ll never bark at our guests if we allow them to enter the house. But he will follow the guests around the house to make sure the guests don’t steal anything lol~ And when my grandpa died, he slept under my grandpa’s coffin every night.

He's quick to learn and quick to get bored. Thank you for this video!

I have two Vietnamese coworkers, and asked them recently about this breed. I already knew about but sometimes people don't know about rare breeds from their own country, especially if it's isolated, like on an island. They both knew it well, both commented on how it's "extremely smart", and one of them actually have one at home in Vietnam, brought over to the mainland from Phu Quoc island. Her previous lived to 15 years.
But there are no pure breed Phu Quoc ridgeback, even in Phu Quoc island. Around 80s-90s, the islanders crossbreed with foreign breeds because they think it will make them more valuable, (they think foreign stuffs are better than native). And when they realize how rare of Phu Quoc ridgeback, it's too late.
A nice documentary. Thank you. I also own a Phu Quoc Dog and i can underline everything that has been said. They are great loyal and loving dogs! I got a female dog, she is 1.5 years old. Looking at the female dog in the video makes me wonder if they really need to be that thin? My dog is not that slender. We do exercise up to 5 times a day. I keep her walking for at least 2 sometimes up to 3 hours a day. She would eat much more than I offer her but I serve only half the ammount than the packaging description suggests. The breeder told me the dogs must have rice in their food... however we dont have rice every day she goes with the regular food as well. I live partly in Vietnam and I see many Phu Quoc Dogs chained up in yards in front of houses. They are never exersised and kept inside most of the time. It´s a shame, because these dogs need exersise and want to run and sniff... best regards from Suoi Nuoc, Mui Ne.
I had neighbors with one of these fellas. They said he was a crossed dog, but still had a relatively prominent ridge on his back. Beautiful coat and majestic.
Thank you for this - fascinating! I’m guessing part of why they’re so strategic and apt at outwitting us is because they come from generations of dogs that often had to fend for themselves, stealing whatever food they could get without being caught by humans. Lovely dogs!
Oh the stories I could tell you! One stole the tuna from my sandwich... left the bread and the veggies all intact. I thought I was getting early dementia... But it was indeed stolen by the dog...

I have a Phu Quoc dog; I got him in Hanoi and brought him to Mexico. He’s seriously the best dog ever, he’s joyful, playful, very sociable with people and other dogs (even after being mistreated by people before I got him) and truly the smartest dog ever!! He sometimes is like a 4 year old human way of thinking and use of logic. He never ceases to amaze me.
The video production quality is amazing! The style of editing reminds me of the Volvo Ocean race with its quality. And thats in my opinion the best there is :)
An interesting behavior of the Phu Quoc dog is that, when close to giving birth, the dog instinctively digs a secluded nest far from its owner's home. After giving birth, the dog returns the following day to guide the owner to the nest, seeming to ask for help in bringing the puppies back home. This instintive behaviour may be due to genetic traits from their ancestors, who once lived as wild dogs.
I'm an old timer dog trainer myself and I would love to have my native land's dog. I think I used to owned one of this dog back home in Saigon in the 70s before escaped from the commie. If you want to own an exotic animal like the now extinct Tasmanian tiger or regular tiger but would like to domesticate it, Phu Quoc dogs come as close as it gets. These dogs have ridge back, tiger stripes, and webbed feet with long/curled up claws. All that made this royal specie great swimmer and agile climber. With their lean built, they are also a speed demon. Their intelligence made them uncanny.
