+skyelife44 I dont recommend them to people who have never owned a dog before though. They are extremely smart and without form and consistent guidance can take over. Other than that, they are amazing dogs. Loyal, loving, gentle and smart.

@@LadyDarkmoore I am with you. I grew up with Jindo. My father was a master at dog training. Our Jindo only obeyed my dad and was good enough with us. However he bit a number of people when my dad was not around. It was touching to see how loyal he was though. When my dad was not in sight, he would look for him all over the town and found him. My dad was usually out fishing or drinking with his buds.

this dog's fear of being outside is a very isolated case. Jindo's love to be outside hunting birds and rodents. they are active dogs. so for those watching this considering getting a Jindo, do not think that this is a typical attribute of a Jindo. also, a Jindo typically has no problem eating from it's owner's hand. again, this is a isolated case. Jindo's are very loyal to the point where the saying amongst Koreans regarding Jindo's is that they truly only know and have one owner so get a Jindo that is a puppy. this way the Jindo will grow up loving you and giving you the opportunity to see how special these dogs are. if you want a dog that is easily trained do not get a Jindo. they are very intelligent, similar to German shepherds. they are perhaps even smarter than German shepherds but they are also stubborn.

This dog looks and acts so much like my Jindo that it's a little shocking. I have met other Jindos and none of them had nearly as much in common. My dog had anxiety issues his whole life but was bonded very close to me and will forever be the love of my life. I had him for 17 years! He died last October. You've done great work with Lucky. I would love to see more of him.

If you need to adopt a Jindo dog, you need to get extremely young one. Grown up big? It is very very hard to forge a strong bond as a pet and pet owner. Since they are loyal to only 1 owner which could be former owner or breeder.

Interesting. My daughter brought one home (Canada) from Korea as a puppy, rescue job; then went out to Vancouver and asked me to take care of him. I noticed 2 things right away - he was territorial ie. he plopped himself down on a cot in my computer room where I spend most of the day and he snarled if anyone else tried to enter the room (even though he took feed from same people outside the room) - and he was at first only loyal to my daughter who was now gone. So I waited - even though he was right behind me on the cot, I ignored him in the room ... even though I walk him 3 times a day and feed him ... finally after 6 months he came to me in the room. From that point onward he was mine. But they never forget - my daughter came home for a visit after 2 years and he went crazy for her, not leaving her alone for 10 minutes. The other things you show are exactly true - the shyness and aggressiveness. He is a one person at a time dog. Mocha.

    • @boogieloo1831

Soul - you have to probably go there and official adopt one as there as specific rules with Jindos. You can leave with a pups or dog but you have to officially adopt one if I understand it correctly.
You should check the Jindo Ranch in Texas - call the guy. He's the only legit breeder here and gets his dogs from Korea for breeding. He will even ship a puppy to you. You can google the Jindo Ranch and get the contact number.
There are also many in the Los Angeles shelters if you're interested in that route - and I believe a group called TreasuredK9's also helps connect you to them.

I raised a Jindo myself. She was a great family dog and very loyal and territorial. It rarely let people outside the family pet her. She protected our house like it was her territory, barking at anyone she heard or saw through the windows. She seem to have endless energy and needed at least one or two hours of exercise each day. She was hard-wired to catch prey and would chase anything she came across, including squirrels, foxes, deer, chipmunks, seagulls, raccoons, and crows. Her nose was always to the ground and her sense of direction was legendary. She suffered from a thyroid condition which made her unable to put on weight and needed special medicine which came in the form of a powder and needed to mixed into every meal she ate. At age 13 she became anemic and by age 14 her anemia made her unable to walk, despite having 3 blood transfusions to increase her red blood cell count.

I agree that it is all in the training - I have a Jindo and my friend has his sister. We both raised them differently and the sister is aggressive towards children, not well socialized and causes a lot of headache for her owner. My dog has zero issues and most people can't even tell its not just a happy 'husky' (because they don't know the breed). He still has some innate traits (strong prey drive and loyalty, wanderlust, etc) but he is the best dog no matter where I take him.

    "Fear and Aggression"
That's the point. Jindos were used for as animal-finders first and foremost, and then in towns as burglar alarms. That means a lot of wolf ends up staying in the dog.

jsong21 Very true - owners do need to be engaged in training program in order for the dog to continue to make progress. The owners did not understand how to properly socialize this Jindo as a puppy, but fortunately they were fully prepared to do the necessary work in implementing the behavior modification plan. Met with the owners for 5 private lessons following board and train to help transfer skills and knowledge. This is behavioral training (vs. compulsion based obedience) this training relies on systematic desensitization and counter-conditioning. Whatever the dog learns through these DS/CC exercises will never be lost.

Don't listen too any these negative comments. From what i saw the jindo was already trained and if ya'll got him when he was an adult. Then its hard for them to let go of their original owner.
I had the same problem as a kid, they're so loyal too a fault that when they have a new owner they literally fear opening up again, Doing the things did with the previous owner, or eating disorders my jindo was the same way, so i get the struggle. I empathize with ya 😅
But they do and they will, just like how ji yoon did for me.
It takes time and just being there really. It sounds simple but its not a simple task So keep at it! They're the perfect mix of guard dog and family dog. And rarely bark, but when they do you know somethings up.
And if you have kids and they recognize you as the owner, consider your future kids lucky cause they'll literally protect them like dog knights. (I was that kid lol)
And don't punish them too much, especially mentally, i made that mistake back then, but they really take criticism and punishment personally and more often then not a simple "bad dog" or a simple punishment would do the trick.
Like i yelled at ji yoon for pooping on my mat and she didnt eat or drink for 2 days. And that woke me up lol.
And one time i didnt eat for a while for personal issues and she brought me dog food. Basically telling me to eat haha
But long story short, they're super loyal to a fault, hard to get to open up (if they had a previous owner) but totally worth it. And they're dog knights ayy

feels like Jindos and anxiety go hand and hand sometimes. But my friend's dog turned into a love bug and borked at everything when I was introduced to her and even understood when I asked to play with her when she knew nothing of the sorts LOL. I talked to her like regular for whatever reason and she'd go get a toy for us to play with. Truly so smart and full of personality. But I relate to her anxiety so much LOL can't even blame my friend's dog. It's wild out here!

The fact that these dogs are very hard to handle in ways and I know this cause I use to have one before and I'm full Korean, Jindo dogs are really temper type of dogs and very stubbornness in them lol... just like we Korean have that kimchee temper stubbornness in our self and don't trust to strangers, unless the owner that has taken care of them since they born they will be fine to handle.

Furious 454 hey, thanks for watching. In this case, the dog had been raised since birth with the family and was still exhibiting concerning behavior with family. A lot of this was due to the fact that the dog was experiencing chronic stress. He did very well with this training and his behavior with family improved considerably when he went home from this positive reinforcement training program. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts. Best, Alyssa

It is obvious that you're an excellent dog trainer. I have seen docos about korean trainers who specializes in Jindos and even they get frustrated into tears lol.
From what I heard Jindos are notoriously hard to train and they don't cope well in urban environment.
Apparently this is due to how Koreans traditionally raised their Jindos to be used in hunting.
They're intelligent and loyal dogs but they also only bond with one owner, wild to the point that they must give birth away from humans and are known to be violent toward other dogs.
Definitely not for the novice owners.....

If you are interested in learning more about this dog's story you can find a written case study on my website www.legendsdogtraining.com - the self study courses and my six week virtual classes also outline much of the training that that Lucky received to build confidence and trust with people as well as within his environment. Great video but what do you do if your dog is NOT treat or food motivated?

    • @legendsdogtraining
      @legendsdogtraining  7 лет назад

Hey Ellen! Thanks for watching, and for your comment. All animals are inherently motivated for food. Birds, bees, foxes, coyotes, lions... their days revolve around the acquisition of food (searching, scavenging, hunting, foraging). Compared to their wild counterparts, domesticated animals have many issues related to fearful, impulsive, anxious and overtly aggressive behavior. This is in large part due to the fact that food does more than simply nourish an animal's body. It also helps them to become better problem solvers, better adapt to their environment and fortify relationships (for those animals that live in social constructs). When I begin training with a dog that isn't necessarily "working" for food we first need to rule out any physical sickness that could be influencing their appetite. Assuming that that isn't the issue, I usually find that these dogs are either over-fed and/or are experiencing chronic stress; for instance, separation anxiety, noise sensitivity, or dogs that are unable to develop trusting relationships. The dog in this video is a great example. This dog was extremely under-weight when we started his training program. His owners had been leaving mass amounts of food out throughout the day, and adding toppings to entice him to eat more but his appetite remained inconsistent: sometimes he ate more in one sitting, but generally he grazed. When I started training with him I began hand feeding. Hand feeding helped him to develop a trusting relationship with me and it also served to minimize stress associated with his environment and routine. His stress levels decreased, his appetite increased, he put on healthy weight. This feedback loop between the brain and the gut is powerful, and greatly under-estimated. Thanks again for watching and commenting. - Alyssa Rose (Lapinel), CPDT-KA

We have an approximately 9-12 month old dog that someone dropped in our alley about 6 months ago. We named her Alley. We fell in love with her. Our vet said she looks like a Whippet crossed with a terrier of some type. She is very loving to my husband and myself and also other people she knows. I recently had to hire a new housekeeper and when she came to visit our home for the first time Alley bit her on her hand and on her ankle. I know that she has fear aggression issues. She is also afraid of the dog brush. We have two older small dogs in the house that she gets along with. She does rough house to hard with the little Chihuahua. Alley also does not listen to commands. Though, she will come or go for a treat. I need help!

These are all symptoms of neglect. Dont expect the dog to keep these teaining manners without the owner making a direct effort to follow through with interacting with the dog. Jindos are.not a dog for beginner.owners. These dogs need a strong pack leader and also need to give then a lot of love and respect.

Any amateur will fail with a Jindo. It is like a Malinois... must have a job all the time and a skilled dog handler' 'Loving him' and 'wanting the best' makes no difference to some breeds at all and this is one. He requires a skilled handler coached by a pro who is qualified. And a dog that attacks others and people will be destroyed soon enough by the owner or the court.

I am a manager for Petco, and over the weekends, we have a rescue group come in. About 2 months ago they rescued several dogs from a South Korean slaughterhouse. After customs and several vet checkups, they entered the US and some have already been adopted. Two of these lucky pooches that arrived were Jindo brothers.
Tonight, one went home with my family. Tundra came home without me as I worked late and wasn't home until later. He was calm and cooperative all evening, laying in his crate and enjoying all the pets and belly rubs. Once I got home he was so happy to see me he licked my entire face! He knew me from the store and I think it made him happy to see a familiar face and smell a familiar scent. He is now 6 months old and not 100% potty trained, and is fearful of traffic although he enjoys car rides. Luckily he is still young and not nearly as traumatized as Lucky and has no aggression to other dogs or children.
I've explained to my husband and mom in law the importance of touching him and brushing him, paying particular attention to his feet and in between his toes to help desensitize him to having his nails done. He will be going through classes and I will also be working with him to socialize him in the outside world using positive reinforcement. Baby Steps! Your video was was extremely informative and I appreciate you sharing your wonderful skills with us! Jindos, while being very proud and strong-willed, make wonderful additions to a well educated family!
