Dear designchickee, I look forward to your “lessons”. Thank you for being so generous with your expertise. We are in the middle of a new build, and are as we say in Australia ‘owner builders’. All the decisions are ours alone and it is a huge task, with so many options! Your design lessons really help. I really like that you pick one issue and discuss it fully. It makes the information much more digestible. When it is just one big task it becomes overwhelming!!😳 but broken down like you are doing - means I stop panicking and just do one step at a time! 🙂 Thanks again, warm regards Debby.
Fantastic video. Thank you so much. I’m helping a friend place lighting in her kitchen (likely recessed as it’s a tiny kitchen open to her dining room).
Hi, this video was extremely helpful and specific. My husband and I are renovating a new apartment and this is exactly the information we needed. Thank you!
Thank you for this video. One other point is that solid pendants over the island will allow one to work at the island and watch a TV in the same room. Glass see-through would not.
Thank you sooooo much for this video. For years now (really) we have been putting off lighting above our kitchen island because we just couldn't figure out the math of lighting. The island is a square and because we had adequate other lighting we just chickened out so to speak. Thanks to your tips I think I know exactly what we will be going for. Looking forward to your next tips.
Wow you are time with with this video wow I've been asking about this for two days now and then boom your video comes on about the lights thank you so much is very very helpful
Hello. What about decorative lighting over a window with sink below? I learned today that a pendant is not in code over such a sink, so either recessed, semi flush, or flush mount lights are approved. A wall sconce in our case is also not approved because of the load-bearing beam above the window. What is the scale / proportion width for a 58”w window, 32” sink? Thank you!
Hi, this was a very informative video. However, one question I have is how to line up the pendants. In other words, do they need to be centered down the middle or can they be offset? We have a big island (10' long) by about 38" wide (which includes a 25" base and a 12" overhang for seating). The electrician centered the pendants down the main section of the island not including the overhang. He said that way the lights were more for the work space and the lights wouldn't be so much "in your face" when seated at the overhang side. Does what he's saying make sense? Most spacing guides talk about the spacing of the pendants along the length of the island but not where according to the width, so it would be great to have your opinion. By the way, we plan to put three pendants over the island. Thanks much :)
Awesome video. Any video on A frame kitchen ceiling with no exposed beam? The multiple lights is not an option and below the A frame ceiling I have an 8 feet island. Unfortunately not helpful to me as not one of the advices future a island under un a frame ceiling.
This was very helpful, thank you! I've got a dilemma. My main floor is open concept and two rows of potlights go through the kitchen from easat to west to the hall/living room. They're not centered between the north and south kitchen walls. The previous owners did not have an island. It's not noticable because it's just potlights and they function, but I want to put in three skinny/long island pendant lights that I know will draw the eye to the pendants. The pendant lights will be in a row parallel to the potlights, but they'll be 8" away from one row of potlights and about 24" away from the other row. Will this be very noticable? I really don't want to move one row of potlights and have to redrywall, but I can if absolutely needed. Thank you :)
And then the living room or the dining room or the hallway or the foyer... I could go on and on but I'm sure I'll make more videos about all of it! LOL
would 3 pendants 9"X6" ovals be too much/too little for an island that is 7X3.5 ft. I was thinking colored glass pendants. Could you share your thoughts?
I have a peninsula coming off of a wall with a cabinet and bulk head at one end. How would I measure for pendant lights in this instance or should I even be using them?
Wondering what to do when you have a bunch of canned lights all overhead that don’t align well with the replacement of those canned lights with pendant lighting. Do I swag the pendant lights? Or do I have to fill in the canned lights completely and the cut more holes in the ceiling for pendants? Currently I have three canned lights that go across the kitchen and one of the three is aligned right along the edge of the kitchen island countertop where some would sit.
Hello Designchickee. Great videos. I’m building a house. Very modern. All white kitchen with white quartz counter with black veins. Not sure what to for task lighting over island. I want to bring some black dome lighting. What your thought besides done shape? I’m also doing some black hardware on the cabinets or the new (gold-ish) to include the same color scheme for the spray facet. I’d like to mix hardware color? What do you think? The island is 9’ x 4’. Any advice or a picture or 2 would be great? Once again, great videos. Keep up the great work.
Great video! I am building a new home and island will be 10 feet long. My hood range won’t be centered with the sink, so I am not sure if I should install two large pendants to bring some symmetry to my kitchen or just add three medium size? Thank you for this informative video 😊
Great Info My kitchen sink is not ecntered in the island - I have 18" (trashcan) -36-" Sink cabinet - 24" (Dishwasher) I am struggling on placement of Pendants. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Tks
Great video. I’m starting a new home build next month and this was extremely helpful. My kitchen is rectangular without windows, though will have solar tubes. There are openings on each short end. The island is 3x6’. Do you have any thoughts on size? I’m not overly fond of looking at a clear bulb from the size. The cabinets are white, granite with white background, and medium tone wood floor. Very little wall space for paint around openings. I’m wondering if I need visual weight thru color. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for the wonderful video. What about the very modern skinny cone shape light fixtures? They are usually 2.5"-3.5" in diameter and somewhere between 12"-24" High, mostly metal material.
I have a 2 meters long kitchen island. Currently the design incorporates 3 pendant lights (oxford style) 23 cm diameter each with 50 cm spacing wire to wire. I am considering replacing with 2 industrial domes 40 or 50 cm in diameter. Which diameter suits better and what would be the ideal wire to wire or edge to edge spacing between them? Thank you! 🥰
Great video! I'm working with 55 inches from counter to ceiling. Is there such a thing as the lights not hanging far enough from the ceiling to look right? I'm afraid if the lights hang only 15 inches down (ceiling to top of fixture), for example, it will won't be pleasing to the eye. Thanks.
I am trying to find the correct placement of 16” pendant light over an island that has seating on one side and a sink on the other side which does have a recessed light above. The island is 8’ long. Thank you.
Thanks for the video, it is very useful. Question, what about having the lights at different heights? I am about to install one lamp with three lights and have the option to move each of them up or down. I personally prefer the three aligned, but family say that at different heights they look nicer. A lot of work to to change the layout once installed so wanted to know if there is an argument against of favor. It is a modern kitchen, with a central rectangular island.
Hi, one thing you don’t mention is the ceiling location of the pendants in relation to the island surface. i.e. center? Off center towards a front bar/seating area? Or off center towards the kitchen work/sink/prep area? And if off center, what ideally is the distance left on either side towards the edges of the counter? Thank you
Hi Designchickee. I am in the middle of a custom build and have surfed hundreds of videos/pin photos for the right pendant lights to have over my kitchen island. I love the wrought island/glass pendants with the edison bulbs in the white kitchen with the huge range hood and the black island. What brand are they and where can I find them? Thanks!
I have a design challenge for turning an old small kitchen bar counter into a bakers cabinet. I cannot move the support beams there so its hard to reconfigure/imagine. Its sits right between kitchen and family/game room. Want to hide all portable appliances like coffee maker, and toaster kinda of stuff in it. Wondering if I can send some pics and ask for some suggestions? Might make for a great new video idea?
is it 12" of clearance from edge of island on each side or 6" each side x 2 = 12 inches? Also, my island (white quartz countertop) will have a lil extension on the left side to accommodate for universal design features (that has a butcher block countertop). total length of the island is 7 feet, including the extension (which will take up perhaps a quarter of the island). Question is, do I put the 2 or 3 island pendant lights centered on the whole 7" or just the length of the white countertop portion of the island? thanks
Does using glass pendants change the recommended number of pendants used in a room? I'd love to use one large glass pendant in my 15x13 dining room but I'm trying to figure out if I should really use more than one single light.
I have a breakfast bar off the back of my kitchen counter, that is higher than the counter. The 2 eyeball lights are over the kitchen counter. I want to put hanging lights in place of them. Do I need to move them over the breakfast bar or leave them where they're at?
Hi, love your videos, really learn a lot. I am in the middle of renovations and my lounge dinning and kitchen are all open to each other. Do you hang pendant lights in all 3 areas?
Hard to say without seeing what the space looks like... it all depends on how close together these areas are and how large the pendants are or how many pendants you're thinking of for each area. Maybe pick 2 out of the 3 areas so it's not so distracting. Thanks for watching!
What about an island that has a bend in it? It also sticks out of the kitchen and somewhat into the living area as well. Should pendent lights follow the bend of the island?

I used these tips and it helped me a lot in deciding what type of pendants I need on an 11’ island . Great video .
Really terrific presentation. In the midst of deciding in the next few days what to buy. So many choices....its crazy. Very, very helpful.....
So happy it was a helpful video! Thanks for watching and good luck!
You are great and your videos are so helpful, thank you!
Thank you for this video. One other point is that solid pendants over the island will allow one to work at the island and watch a TV in the same room. Glass see-through would not.
This was helpful! Notes taken and off to measure everything to hand my pendants. Thank you
Great Video! So informative and well presented.
Thank you, the lesson is clear, the measurements help me decide what is best for my kitchen
This was a fabulous video!!! Very informative 😊 thank you!

@designchickee I have lighted cabinets centered with under cabinet lights. The kitchen is narrow. Will it be an eye sore?
Thanks for the measurements. 💯 helpful. Do you have a similar one for general lighting for elderly so that they don't need to climb ladders.
Another awesome informative video! I love your videos! 😊
Aww this is so good to hear! Thank you. :)

When you measure between pendants at 24”-34”, are you measuring between the cords or the width of the pendant itself?
3:30 time on your video

I can share a photo if you like.
what is your favorite light fixture source?

Does it apply also on dining area?
Yes! These are good guidelines for dining tables!
