I always recommend dim-to-warm ambient lighting. Then you have regular daylight color when you need to do a task, and when you want to cozy up and dim the lights, they get warmer like a candlelight 😍 It’s lovely!
I use dimmer controlled lighting in a large percentage of my home allows me to design my own mood. I don't have any colored lights but dimmers are game changers impactful for entertaining.
I love your videos. My kitchen was renovated about 5 years ago so I'm not planning on redoing it anytime soon, but I'm kitchen obsessed regardless and love your content. Keep it up.
Great video! Love how comprehensive and practical your videos are. Since you've been a part of this industry for so long, it would be great to have your point of view in terms of comparison of various modular kitchen companies and also ikea kitchens. Thanks!
@@kitchinsider our kitchen will be within our open plan area so inclusive of the dining and living area. We were going for 3000k lighting throughout for ambient. Would it be advisable to stick to this temperature for the kitchen also as it is very much part of the whole space or would you advise using different temperatures in the same open space?
As it's open plan, I'd stick with 3000k for the kitchen ambient lighting as well. 👍 Mixing colour temperatures in the same lighting layer can look a bit odd.
@@kitchinsider that's very helpful thank you. If I can make a suggestion for another video perhaps - what to do with empty space above the wall cabinets. So much good advice in this video! Inspired me to sort out the lighting in my own kitchen - now have ceiling downlights (white bezels definitely for the win!) and hard-wired under cabinet LEDs for task lighting the counter tops. So much happier with this set up and wished I'd had this done ages ago.

I just discovered your channel Michael and I am absolutely impressed with your content. You are so thorough, practical and valuable in your information. I'm getting ready to do an owner built home and you are a wealth of information. I'm thrilled to have found you and will most definitely continue to follow you. Thank you so much!!! :)
Big fan of your content so far, absolutely on spot with examples, important info,p pacing, it's THE package. A question popped in my mind, just to round the whole scope of the video: what would your suggestions be on type of task lighting when it comes to open shelves / no upper cabinets design? Pendants or more subtle approach, like strips under shelves? Looking forward to the next one, cheers :)
Thanks so much, kind of you to say. Personally, I'd go with some recessed LED strip lights, as you say, something more subtle underneath. Depending on what other lighting you have and perhaps how deep the shelves are, you could go for some wall lights (or pendants), but without lighting underneath you always run the risk of creating shadows.
Loved the video, accurately explained all the things probably required from any novice to expert while designing lighting layout in a kitchen. I am a lighting designer from India, my particular question was regarding the type of lighting for ambient lighting for the ceiling, apart from the trends, what do you recommend? Focus lights like a LED Cob or do you recommend panel lights, I would like to know your opinion? Absolutely fantastic video though....
My island will have my hob and above it the hood, they won't be centered because of how I intend to work or prep on there. I'm wondering if pendant lights would work or maybe I should consider putting two pendants on the side of where I will be working for kind of an asymmetric look and the lights in my hood will provide task lighting on my hob. I'll be seeing my first design in a week and a half and I already know I forgot to mention under cabinet lighting. I bet the designer thought of that. I have asked for the under countertop ledstrips though. Got to bling up my deep black "stary night" granite. And I want to add.. Your videos are by far the most informative ones on kitchen design and useful tips. Thanks :)
Thank you so much, very kind of you to say! 😊 Absolutely I think pendant lights could work. As you say, you may have to go for a more asymmetric look, nothing wrong with that, as long as it still feels balanced. If you make sure the bottom of the hood and pendant lights match that will help make it all feel a bit more cohesive. I'm sure once you see the design you'll get a better feel for where to place any pendants in combination with the hood/island size. Love it! Bling up that granite! 😁

thank you for all your really helpful videos. Re. lighting - I have a small kitchen in a 1-bed flat in a '30s block. There's no false ceiling for recessed lighting. Is there a clever way around this or do you recommend installing a false ceiling?
Thanks so much! Any light really that's cast up and bounces off the walls and ceiling a little will help give the effect of a larger, airier space. Personally, I'd go with some LED strips, probably diffused to give a softer, wider glow.
Hi, good advice, thanks. I am planning a black shiny worktop for over base units (no wall cupboards) and peninsular (main working area) how would you light this to avoid/minimise glare from the lights? Thanks
Great video! Very informative! One question: Are pendant lights recommended on kitchen island that have hob, as I’m considering seating on the other side of the hob with some pendant lights above. Thanks
Thanks for this! I would like to comment that we are remodelling our kitchen and wrt the colour of the spotlights, we previously had white edged trim. After 10 years, these trims are now a pale yellow and stand out like a sore thumb against the white ceiling. We will go with steel trim now!
How far from the wall do you recommend the recessed can lighting to go if you don't have uppers in your kitchen? Directly centered over the counters or slightly on the front edge of counters? Thanks!
Thank you. So very helpful as always. We are building soon. Our kitchen has no upper shelving. How may I light my counters since I can’t do under-cabinet lighting? Would appreciate any ideas. Thank you!!
Thanks so much, pleased it was helpful! Well positioned ceiling lights will still really help but I'd look at getting some wall lights (sconces) to give you that extra light for working. They can also be great for some decorative lighting and a nice way to help get a particular aesthetic/look you're going for.
I am installing a linear pendant light of 2m length over a 2.6m kitchen island. What would be a rough guide of the lumens I need for this light? Can't decide if 1850lumens is too low or 4200 lumens is too high. I want to use pendant with a dimmer.
I don't have upper cabinets. Just open shelving that's 10 inches from the wall in one area, and no shelves or cabinets elsewhere. If that's the case, would a light positioned 12 inches out (half the depth of the countertop), shining light in the center of the workspace be the best? Otherwise if I do the 24 inches, the light just shines on my head as I work, no?
Our electrician has laid cables to put trimless downlights 700cm apart through our kitchen. Ending up with 16. I think it's too many/too close together. I don't want it to be too starkly bright. Could I ask your thoughts please?
thank you for your handy guide. I have a small kitchen in a one-bed flat. I'm planning a complete refit and am contemplating recessed ceiling lights but am somewhat reluctant to drop the ceiling height. Are there good alternatives for ambient lighting a small kitchen?
hello my English is not well so I apologise about my grammery mistake.I was just wondering about placement of lights over the upper cabinets? it shoul be 60 cm off that or 60 cm off wall? next question: could you introduse refrence books for lighting design in restaurant and face of building in exterior? thanks a lot
Love this. Just subscribed. What would you do with pendants for a 7' island that ends in a peninsula? Seating at the peninsula end. (An L shaped island, I suppose.)
Thanks so much! 😊 Tricky without seeing the design and the rest of the room/kitchen layout but I've done L-shaped pendant lighting before. In those instances it's just about what looks balanced (in terms of number/size of lights). Sometimes it's just pendants in one section and spot lights above the other if that makes more sense/gives a better flow/views in the kitchen.
Thanks for the info, very useful. I have a question: What would you recommend for lighting a peninsula where there is also an island in the kitchen with pendent light(s)? Peninsula has seating, but the island does not.
Can you tell me what lights are at 5:46? Or at least the style? I know they’re strips but I like how they look like they were routed into the wood. Is there more information?
You've pretty much got the answer yourself. They are LED strips (in a track/profile) routed into the underside of the wall cabinet. There are various kitchen manufacturers that offer this as a factory option for their wall cabinets. You could DIY it but cable management is usually the tricky part.
Thanks Michael. Absolutely love your channel, and particularly helpful as we've been planning the kitchen renovation. We aren't having any wall cabinets. A long L-shaped kitchen, with stainless steel benchtops on almost-black drawer fronts. An island in the main section of the room. Given we will have no wall cabinets, and there's the steel benchtops which will have an element of reflectiveness, I'm thinking that recessed LED downlights will be sufficient for both ambient and task lighting (we'll add a more feature-focused task lighting above the island) so as to give sufficient light without excessive glare off the benchtops. Ceiling height is also only 2.4m. Do you think that'll work?
Thanks! Yes, I think downlights should probably be enough. Assuming you have a sufficient amount and they are placed correctly so as not to create a shadow when you're stood at the worktop. Also depends on any windows/skylights and locations. If you're at all worried I'd also consider some nice wall lights/sconces (if possible) to add a little more light/style/mood. Sounds good though 👍
If you turn all your lights to max brightness and you don't get blistering sunburn within fifteen minutes, you need more lights. Seriously, I have a small (129x93-inch) galley with eight-foot-three ceilings, and I plan to use dimmable soft white strip toe-kick (plinth) as a sort of night-light for safety, bright white under-cabinet strips, and bright-white ceiling lights in stainless or nickel bezels. I will have about 5 1/2 feet length of windows on a south wall (northern hemisphere) for additional daylight.
Thanks for another brilliant video! I have a question. How do you know how many pendant lights to place above a kitchen island that is 180cm wide? I am planning an island that will be 180cm wide and 102cm deep. I am struggling to workout if I can fit 3 pendant lights above the island and how wide each pendant should be apart?
Thanks! Personally, I think 180cm I'd go for 2 nice sized pendant lights. But if you like the look of 3 lights I'd make sure the pendants aren't too big (don't have wide shades). Then I'd centre the first and have the other two equal distance out from the centre and the edge of the island countertop. (maybe slightly closer to the countertop edge, to get the best light coverage - depends on the pendant size) Just make sure the distance is equal either side of the central pendant. 😊 I hope that help!
Hello! I was just wondering about placement of downlights over the counter tops if I have no upper cabinets (there is a window, and a peninsula [which then is open plan to the living area]). Would you still recommend 60cm from the wall? Or a little closer maybe? Thank you 😊
Hi! If there's definitely no upper cabinets (or potential for them in the future) then yes, you could go slightly closer just to make sure it's nice and overhead and not creating any shadows while working. Depending on the size of the light fitting i'd say 55/50cm off the wall (the smaller the light the closer you might be able to take it to the wall). You don't want it too close that it just lights up the wall (or window). When they are too close you get that strong light strip/cone shining on the wall. 😊
I wanted to retrofit under cabinet lighting and came up with a solution which I am happy with. The underside of cabinets are not the prettiest, are difficult to clean grease off, and eventually, the plastic lipped cabinet edges can separate - there is also the gap at the back. If you have a pelmet there is enough room to fit a panel cut to fit the whole area (or at least a run) covering the cabinet edges and rear gaps with a smooth, very neat, and easy to clean surface to which lights can be inset with the wiring concealed behind. I managed to get slim units fitted with halogen bulbs which I removed and replaced with LEDs, as up to then, I had been very disappointed with the LED units which gave a poorer light, and if a bulb failed often needed the whole unit, rather than just the 'bulb' replacing. Selecting the colour temperature was also easier. I hate moving, and have only ever done so as a necessity rather than a personal choice. As a result, I often live with items far longer than most. The cabinets (fitted shortly before I bought) in my previous kitchen were over 20 years old when I moved out, but well maintained and in excellent order as worn out items had been replaced as required - the door colour was back in fashion too! Given my often extended usage, while I agree with you regarding white surrounds on spotlights blending in better, so far I have found that they will so often 'yellow' after a few years, and if from different batches sometimes at quite different rates, and possibly thanks to the kitchen environment, the paint can become unstable and fail under even moderate cleaning. If you are happy to replace as they fade etc., that is fine, but if you are not, perhaps you will be better choosing a more durable and stable finish.
Don't have ceiling mounted work lights with wall cabinets. Put your work lights on the underside of the cabinets and you'll get better light and no shadows.

What would you do if the kitchen is in a double height space for ambient lighting?
Part 2?
Nice video, but "Kelvin" isn't plural...it's a singular correlated colour temperature metric.
Outside temperature is a lovely 25 Celsiuses today. Or is it Celsii?
Hi Michael, great video like all of them 👍 I could do with some advice on lighting for my kitchen renovation, I've sent you an email to your website email address, it would be fantastic hear back from you and keep the videos coming 😀
"most people will paint their ceiling white" look up at my pretty blue ceiling... nah. White ceilings are dreary and boring.
