This was great. Now, I need a video on lighting "rules." For example, how tall/wide should a table lamp be and why. I would venture to guess that a LOT of us probably buy lamps too small just like rugs. :)
I don't think there is a rule about the size of the lamp but what's important is the size of the light. You don't want your light sources to create hotspots and instead they should blend with each other.
Only rule I know for lamps is that it doesn’t matter how aesthetically pleasing it is, never place it where someone (particularly clutzes like me lol) can bump into or trip over 😊
Always to scale with the room and/or the table it will be at/on and when seating down the light emitting shouldn't be right in front of your eyes. Better higher than lower than your eyesight on most cases. There are tons of info online.
I've seen the dupes, I've seen the recent designer styling, I had NO idea the history behind these lamps. This is such a cool educational background episode!

Yes, yes, yes. There were a lot of midcentury modern pieces featured in this video (excellent lighting fixtures, to be sure, but not a lot for other design styles) and this is a perfect example of a light that works just as well in an industrial-modern space (depending on the variation) as in a traditional one. Definitely not a light that ever completely goes out of style.
This was super interesting, Nick. Next time can you do a lighting video that relates lamps to different styles? Traditional, Boho, etc. My "style" (or lack thereof) is all over the place, and my lamps are no different. It would be nice to figure out a way to tie some of this stuff together.
I still love those colorful Tiffany lampshade pendant lights that come down from the ceiling on a brass chain…like late 70s-early 80s 🙈 It just says “home” to me!
I have similar things. Two Victorian art deco style with the cloth lampshades (fringe and all). I was getting some renovations done and a ceiling fan put in, and someone asked me what the hook in the corner of the ceiling was for, and it's for the light. The Tiffany lamp I have is a floor lamp and not as colourful as some of the ones I've seen. It goes nice with the decor. Although decor and Tiffany lamps makes me think of The Old Spaghetti Factory, a chain of restaurants largely in Western Canada, that has the most unique theming featuring plenty of neat lamps and train motifs.

Walking around Homegoods one day I spotted what I now know is the Atollo lamp. I don’t know a thing about design but that lamp caught my eye and I kept going back to it. It had a tiny dent and I got it for $60. I love that it’s considered a classic, and will never go out of style.

I have lived with every kind of lighting over the years including all that you mentioned (grew up with the Nelson Lamp over the dining table) and as much as I love the sculptural look of these lights, I really prefer Art deco lighting with shades rather than the open bulb look of so many contemporary lamps and lighting fixtures. the glare from even glass shades eventually bugs me. The Sputnik has always been my favorite. I have 2 small dupes in my kitchen, but I'd love to have a real one! I plan to replace my dining room chandelier with a big Sputnik one. Mid-century modern is my favorite design. I love that whole time in history!
On Pinterest, I keep on binging pages after pages of 1920 Art Deco designer pieces including lighting fixtures. A lot of them haven't aged one bit and are looking wonderful...
i own a 1950's ranch and when we went chandelier shopping i described what i wanted as "we are going to the moon someday" lamp... landed on a sputnik knockoff. everyday that light makes me smile (actually my whole living/dining room does) it sets a fun tone for the room and really brings home the midmod feel.

I'm not interested in modern these days, but I really appreciated the historical information. I do have a 'work lamp'. That Turner lamp looks more 70s to me, but there was a Deco revival during that period, so that is definitely the vibe.
As a big fan of classic light fixtures I appreciate this video! A few months ago I picked up one of those beautiful Taschen books (you know, a lot of breadth with little depth) on classic lamps called, simply, "1000 Lights." One of the features was the Mariano Fortuny floor lamp, which shows up every once in a while. Never really thought about its origin, since it seemed to be an invention of a photographer because of its strong resemblance to a "softbox" diffuse light due to its big reflector and tripod legs. But I was kind of shocked to learn it was designed over 110 years ago. Far, far older than I had assumed yet it looks completely contemporary.
Would love a video about the different ways to utilize staircase space. I feel like there are so many different types of things I could do but I can't ever land on what seems right. Thanks!

Great video! Just one thing, the first table lamp you're showing as an example of designs inspired by the PH5 lamp, isn't inspired by it, it's actually another PH lamp from the same designer, only an earlier model from the 20's ;) (PH5 was designed in the 50's). Also the lamp on the left at 14:00 is from 1971 (Panthella lamp by Verner Panton), so it's 6 years older than the Atollo lamp and not inspired by it either ;)
Designed by Richard Sapper for Artemide, Tizio Micro is an aluminum table or bedside table lamp with adjustable head and arms balanced by counterweights. I just love the balance and have never found a better task light.
I have a seating area planned in my bedroom in my new house I'm having built and I've had planned to get an arco floor lamp that's going to be cornered and is intended to have the shade fall just above the coffee table next to an armchair. I've been playing with that configuration in a 3D modeling app (Live Home 3D if anyone is wondering) and it looks so cool and it shouldn't be in the way like it can be sometimes

Poul Henningsen made a lot of cool designs. the ph 5 has siblings. my favorite is the ph 3-3,5 in original colours. I have grown up with ph 5 as it was one design investment they made as a new couple. it gives a wonderfull light. quite good pronounciation, I am danish.

I have a PH5 I bought in a vintage store in Copenhagen in the early 00's. I did a semester abroad there in the early 90's. Used it in my dining area in a townhouse, then swagged in a large window bay in an apartment, now I'm using it in a foyer area of my 70's condo.
Mid century modern is my favorite design style and I love the Sputnik lamp. I'm hoping to thrift an original. I know it's out there somewhere waiting for me. Love your channel.

And then I watched other design you tubers and saw the different lamps that you had mentioned. Never would have spotted them. And in zoom calls I see lamps in the background. I would love to see you discuss ideas of how to update your home, but stay true to the style of the house. We are updating a '50 era cape cod and I want to update it with current trends that will still be faithful to the cape cod style.
The lamp I loved as I lived thru the actual mid century modern era had a semi-sphere metal shade and just below the shade was an egg shaped metal piece that held all the cord covered wiring that you could pull down or back up like a window shade so you could control how the light affected the are. Pull down to do homework at the table, back up for more diffuse lighting for a dinner party. I saw fixture in a lighting store recently that used the idea of adjustable height but in a very modern piece that was an extraordinarily over the top price.
We have the last saucer lamp you showed-- the crisscross I think it's called. We love it so much that we've moved it with us 3 times since we bought it in 2005. It now lives above our dining room table. It creates a nice diffuse, flattering light for dinner parties.
Some additional suggestions: - Akari lamp series by Isamu Noguchi, especially the 45A, 10A, 1N and UF3-Q models - Artemide Shogun table lamp by Mario Botta - "Funkis" opaline glass "klotlampa" or globe lamp you'll see all over Scandinavia (not sure who originally designed it) - Jieldé series by Jean-Louis Domecq (pronounced like you would JLD in French, the designer's initials) - Flos 265 wall lamp by Paolo Rizzatto
I'm glad you're doing this and before the video starts, I'm hoping it includes alternatives to in-ceiling can lights that turn ceilings into Swiss cheese. Seems like, according to interior design images online, no matter what era/style you are trying to achieve, those things are mandatory.
I recently bought what you call the Atollo lamp, and what is commonly known as the mushroom lamp. I bought it in brass from Crate & Barrel. It goes in the corner of my new gorgeous buffet from Article, and looks stunning.
👌🏼🏆 Design history lessons are so helpful and fun! Love the fact that those lights inspired from the 50's are now trendy and here to stay! (Especially because i had to hire an electrician to install them!) What about the "atomic lamp?" I bought an oval elliptical that i loved in the store, and it surprisingly fits in a 1920 cottage. Without those videos, i wouldn't have risked it. The fixture really updates the space, at least from the 20's to the 50's! 😅
I think traditional milky glass and newer clear glass "Schoolhouse" pendants and downlights are lasting and endearing and fit in anywhere. This was a great tutorial.
We did the renovations for the lobby at my job (a condo building) almost a year ago, and I like how the designer used a variation of the Sputnik design when he changed the light fixtures in the ceiling. The Sputnik aspect was hidden away in like a starburst, and it was one of my fave aspects about the overall renovation design.

Well, none of these were my style per sen but cool video anyway. Would love to see more styles, and maybe talk about what options are available for ceiling lights, or if it's possible to make do without them or something like that.
I've always loved lamps and lighting. I fall more into traditional rather than MCM but still really enjoyed this video and hope you follow up with more like it. And as an aside I'm finding myself watching both you and the large clock over your shoulder. I don't know why I'm finding the movement of the hands facinating but I do.
About the three-arm lamp...My parents had a version of this lamp in our living room during the early 1960s that we used to call a tree lamp. The version from my childhood had had a spring-loaded top end that allowed the lamp to be anchored between the floor and ceiling. My parents mounted this lamp in a corner behind the sofa or to the side when we had a sectional. Yep...remembered that turquoise sectional sofa during my childhood between 1961 and 1963 and that matching tree lamp in the same color.
Thank you (AGAIN!). I need a bigger house, or another house or two to play with. I love the numerous dimensions available for the saucer pendant (50” diameter!)
Informative, thanks! The one I covet is the PH5! I agree that I don't pick up on "the female form" in some of these designs; she'd have to be Twiggy skinny. But, y'know, anyone who has studied art is well acquainted with the female form . . .
really enjoyable survey of lighting, particularly mid-century modern styles. I'm here for an Art Deco revival if it comes. as for the lamp based on the female form, all I can think is, it must be the female Preying Mantis! Seriously.

I know I'm a little late to the release date of this video, but it was so helpful. As I change my lighting in my new house one boob light at a time, I've been struggling to figure out what lighting I even like, so this was a great way to showcase a diverse selection that can be a great return on investment.
Hi Nick. I watched this video about a week ago. It had information in it I have never noticed nor thought about. And then I watched other design you tubers and saw the different lamps that you had mentioned. Never would have spotted them. And in zoom calls I see lamps in the background. I’m so much more observant now and and beginning to have opinions about what I might want. This is BIG!
Big fan of the arc floor lamps, bubble saucer pendant lights, sputnik lights. Liked them so much had to get them for my contemporary style home.

I would love to see you discuss ideas of how to update your home, but stay true to the style of the house. We are updating a '50 era cape cod and I want to update it with current trends that will still be faithful to the cape cod style.

Great video! Learned some design history! I was happy when a less geometric, more organic one showed up.
The lamp I loved as I lived thru the actual mid century modern era had a semi-sphere metal shade and just below the shade was an egg shaped metal piece that held all the cord covered wiring that you could pull down or back up like a window shade so you could control how the light affected the are. Pull down to do homework at the table, back up for more diffuse lighting for a dinner party. I saw fixture in a lighting store recently that used the idea of adjustable height but in a very modern piece that was an extraordinarily over the top price.
The flowerpot to me is definitely another gorgeous timeless classic.
My favourite is the Three Arm Floor Lamp, but as a ceiling light. Very close second is the Sputnik. Great video.
I feel like the ceiling and wall versions are more popular that the floor one, and look nicer too

We have the last saucer lamp you showed-- the crisscross I think it's called. We love it so much that we've moved it with us 3 times since we bought it in 2005. It now lives above our dining room table. It creates a nice diffuse, flattering light for dinner parties.
Some additional suggestions:
- Akari lamp series by Isamu Noguchi, especially the 45A, 10A, 1N and UF3-Q models
- Artemide Shogun table lamp by Mario Botta
- "Funkis" opaline glass "klotlampa" or globe lamp you'll see all over Scandinavia (not sure who originally designed it)
- Jieldé series by Jean-Louis Domecq (pronounced like you would JLD in French, the designer's initials)
- Flos 265 wall lamp by Paolo Rizzatto
I really like the Wagenfeld lamp, which I think is also timeless:)
I wanted something unique so I've recently purchased Tizio as my task lamp. It's the only designer piece I have, and I love it!

I'm glad you're doing this and before the video starts, I'm hoping it includes alternatives to in-ceiling can lights that turn ceilings into Swiss cheese. Seems like, according to interior design images online, no matter what era/style you are trying to achieve, those things are mandatory.

So I ended up buying a bed like you have in your guestroom the one that lifts up with storage underneath I love it.
I recently bought what you call the Atollo lamp, and what is commonly known as the mushroom lamp. I bought it in brass from Crate & Barrel. It goes in the corner of my new gorgeous buffet from Article, and looks stunning.

👌🏼🏆 Design history lessons are so helpful and fun! Love the fact that those lights inspired from the 50's are now trendy and here to stay! (Especially because i had to hire an electrician to install them!) What about the "atomic lamp?" I bought an oval elliptical that i loved in the store, and it surprisingly fits in a 1920 cottage. Without those videos, i wouldn't have risked it. The fixture really updates the space, at least from the 20's to the 50's! 😅
The bubble lighting is beautiful! Reminds me of gumnuts on one of our gorgeous Australian Eucalyptus trees
I think traditional milky glass and newer clear glass "Schoolhouse" pendants and downlights are lasting and endearing and fit in anywhere. This was a great tutorial.

We did the renovations for the lobby at my job (a condo building) almost a year ago, and I like how the designer used a variation of the Sputnik design when he changed the light fixtures in the ceiling. The Sputnik aspect was hidden away in like a starburst, and it was one of my fave aspects about the overall renovation design.

Well, none of these were my style per sen but cool video anyway. Would love to see more styles, and maybe talk about what options are available for ceiling lights, or if it's possible to make do without them or something like that.

I've always loved lamps and lighting. I fall more into traditional rather than MCM but still really enjoyed this video and hope you follow up with more like it.
And as an aside I'm finding myself watching both you and the large clock over your shoulder. I don't know why I'm finding the movement of the hands facinating but I do.
About the three-arm lamp...My parents had a version of this lamp in our living room during the early 1960s that we used to call a tree lamp.
The version from my childhood had had a spring-loaded top end that allowed the lamp to be anchored between the floor and ceiling. My parents mounted this lamp in a corner behind the sofa or to the side when we had a sectional. Yep...remembered that turquoise sectional sofa during my childhood between 1961 and 1963 and that matching tree lamp in the same color.

Informative, thanks! The one I covet is the PH5! I agree that I don't pick up on "the female form" in some of these designs; she'd have to be Twiggy skinny. But, y'know, anyone who has studied art is well acquainted with the female form . . .

really enjoyable survey of lighting, particularly mid-century modern styles. I'm here for an Art Deco revival if it comes. as for the lamp based on the female form, all I can think is, it must be the female Preying Mantis! Seriously.
