  • Hello again friends!! This week we’re diving into all things lamps & lighting & comfy vibes. A thoughtful consideration of lighting can seriously make or break a space and might be exactly what your interior is missing so sit down, get cozy, and let’s chat about it :)
In this vid I run through my general conceptual approach to lighting in interior design & architecture, things to consider in your lighting plan, color temperature & colored lamps, and finally some design icks (lighting edition): lamps w unnecessary ornament, flush mount boob lights, exposed light bulbs, and last but not least, exposed LED strips 🌟
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!! Love u

No no no this edting style is literally perfect, don't change it. The issue with other videos in this category is that they NEVER show enough examples while talking and it always annoys me. We are here to learn visually. You're the first creator who actually shows plenty of examples, which makes everything you say easier to digest.

I am not a design nerd, but I am someone who loves learning. I recently bought a house and have been trying to be thoughtful about how to furnish it. My mind has been overwhelmed by all the things to learn about this field that I’ve never spent time thinking about before. I’m finding it hard to make much progress in turning this house into a desirable space because of all the things to consider (and all the things that I don’t know to consider!). I guess that’s why there are professionals called Interior Designers. Anyway, just letting you know that there are also design neophytes here watching and learning. If you think you’re sharing basic information that you assume someone listening might already know, assume the opposite! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Yes please!! I’m currently building a home and have been stressing about the lighting plan so this video could not have come at a more perfect time. Seriously, thank you. You really helped me understand how to thoughtfully design my ambient lighting. I had been saving images of things I’d seen elsewhere but you were able to EXPLAIN why those designers made the choices they did (eg. ceiling lights placed close to the edge of the walls so that they light the walls rather than spaced all over). THANK YOU!

  • @ninmat

Loving the sober and theoretical approach in these videos. I have one suggestion for a topic. I really miss an advanced video on color theory for painting walls. Like, 1) wall direction and hue, 2) brightness of rooms and recommended LRV and chroma of paint, 3) how to find colors that really 'pop' next to each other for painting adjacent rooms.
If you make a video on that you will be making something truly unique that no one else is covering. But regardless I will keep following the channel :)

I also love all of the examples that you flash up on the right hand side, and honestly some of the lamps lighting, that you are using as illustrations are to die for. I also like that you have featured many paper lantern style lights, like the Noguchi Akari range the Washi paper used gives a wonderful diffused lighting, and I am thinking of incorporating that into my decor I do have a lot of lights and lamps, but I’m trying to edit and make sure each one is complementary And adds to the lighting aesthetic. Love your content love you.

we didn’t give it a second thought and put integrated ceiling lights.

Coming from the nightlife creative scene, being a video game esthetic lover as well as hosting people regularly in my space.. saying « no colored lights » is a huge missed opportunity of creating fun and atmospheric environments.. I do realize the disclaimer in the beginning of the video that these are not general rules and thats cool, it is your own personal style or maybe a more directed content to a specific audience. But in a more general sense, I feel with light design, we should be asking the question of what is gonna be the use of the space, during the day and during the night as well as our personality and vibe we want to express through it.

Some RUclipsrs need to rely on editing more if their content is lacking slightly but you are so engaging as is and your takes and explanations are so good that you really don’t need to change the way you present or edit your videos. It’s kind of refreshing and relaxing to watch.

Pot lights to the side. Blew me away! I bought an MCM house, the seller had installed pot lights everywhere--right down the middle. It's hideous. Hideous!
I knew pots looked better another way but I never could put my finger on how museums achieved it. Mystery solved! My jaw hit the floor when I took in the beautiful look of POT lights washing the walls. I am thrilled.
I can't wait to take them out, repair the ceilings, and reinstall them along the perimeter. I love the look! Many thanks for enlightening me. Literally.
I like your background in this vid. Feels true to u. The experience was soothing. I think if u can wear the mic (clipped on like the news anchors) u will realize an increased comfort of having both hands free.
Thanks also for keeping the images onscreen longer. And u could make it even longer. It take time to absorb images.
The landscape view of u on one half and the examples on the other half is super helpful. I did wish the ones with white frames were minus the frames. My phone screen is small enough already without the white screens. And a thing I've noticed is that white absolutely murders color. That's right, it subtracts in a huge way.
Keep 'em coming! ❤ And consider having less content per video and therefore posting more (shorter) videos. It suits this medium better.
    Best,
    Julia

I love this video so much! You remind me of me! I feel like I've been a lone and lonely voice in abhorring overhead lighting and needing to have SO many light sources in every room, and caring so deeply about lighting in general! I look forward to being a part of your community. BTW, I'm also very sensitive to the temperature of the light in the room and find that it really matters whether the bulbs are warm vs cool, and that what is appealing definitely changes with the time of day. I've been so grateful to find that it's now possible to buy bulbs with adjustable temperature as well as adjustable brightness. And that newer ones are easier to use and don't involve yet another soul killing remote!

Lemme tell you why your video was great and doesn't need to change. It's the same thing I said to my gf when I sent this to her in the middle of watching because it was too good to wait. You have all the example images scrolling right next to you as you spoke! Dunno if that's what you do in your other vids as I'm presently learning how to light my space and this the first I've seen of you. I've seen a lot about color temp and I understand about task, directional, accent, etc but I hadn't heard "as many light sources as possible." That got me thinking differently. I'm also not a fan of seeing a bulb and loved the bit about overly ornate lighting. Changing up my lighting is what got me referring to my apartment as my "space," and that shift in mindset has been amazing. Thank you for sharing!!

The quality is good where it matters - you have excellent audio and the best reference photos. I went down a light bulb rabbit hole last year after I started getting into lamps and bought a vintage Robert Sonneman lamp with the globe bulbs. I also have a number of vintage halogen desk lamps. Getting LED replacements for these things can really go wrong. I never realized how terrible LED light is compared to older “burning” bulbs - they are beautiful like a flame and LED even at the “correct” color temp often just looks dead. I think the technical reason has something to do with the wavelengths that make it up, but that’s when I came to become a bulb snob haha. The British company Tala makes really lovely bulbs - their Sphere collection has adaptive color temperature for dimming so it gets warmer the dimmer you go like old style bulbs. Unfortunately the Spheres didn’t fit in my Sonneman lamp but I have their Echo table lamp with them and it is my favorite lamp ever. I use the regular Tala globe bulb in my Sonneman and I had a little bit of a breakdown because the undertone of those bulbs is just slightly more yellow green than the magenta orange undertone of the Sphere bulbs, even though their color temperature is supposed to overlap, but there was no better alternative and my husband assured me no one can tell 😂

I've fallen in love with your channel. Your words clearly and thoughtfully elucidate stuff I kinda always felt but had no idea why. And knowing the 'why' is insanely helpful. Thank you!
Nevertheless, I was not looking forward to this lighting video, as I have hated all other lighting videos and every piece of lighting advice I've ever read - they always make me feel like I can't do that or I can't afford it. But no, what a ninnyhead I was! Your lighting thoughts are fabulous. And smart. And illuminating (sorry). And achievable - especially in a tiny country where having to make changes that involve an electrician isn't very achievable at all.

Really like your video's and feel with your style a lot. Real nice to get to understand why I hate or love certain design choices in more detail! And indeed, as a filmmaker I totally agree on with this lightening one! Also curious about your own interiors, maybe nice to film the next one with for-, mid- and background? :) And I just love your calm tone of voice, so cute!

Thanks for the video! Yeah, I 100% agree about the importance of light. I got a new studio apartment recently, and the first thing I got, before even a coffee table or a TV stand was a lamp.

Great video! I'm a lighting designer and I've done everything from residential to manufacturing! In many warmer countries, cool lighting is more common. So many cool things happening in lighting right now! Its a great time to be in the space.

I have a dark corner behind a large chair. I put an uplight behind it so it is lit, bit not bright. It just gives a cozy vibe, along with my little lamp family! Great content!

Love the simplicity of the video, such a calm one to watch. So many lessons to be learned, when you talked about exposed bulbs I couldn't help but look over at the one I have hanging over my desk and hang my head in shame ahah

    amazingly enough
I actually got this video every bit of it it made perfect sense to me
And actually it was really helpful for me to think about lighting in a different way
I regret to inform you that I have boob lights all over my apartment
I've only been here a month and a half but I absolutely hate them and it makes sense to me as to why
    I don't use them
I really really have to and it's usually only for whatever task I'm trying to complete which isn't very very long
And I have one of those retro lights in the kitchen which is so ugly
But I had electrical problems when I moved in apparently one of the outlets wasn't grounded and it was causing sizzling spitting sparking
Even though I don't nervous to try because I got them at a secondhand store and the wiring is old
I haven't used them either but when you are purchasing lighting I think it's really important for you you understand what the goal is
Confused and cool and it might actually be a waste of money
Thankfully I have invested anything yet I think lighting is probably the last thing people considered doing because the expense can be pretty great especially when you're thinking about the different tasks you would like lighting and how many lamps you might need to get
    That isn't include hardwired
I also noticed that when you're in a room that is a shared dining room and living room not only is the flooring continuous and in this space it's ugly there's no definition so you have to create that with replacing the whole floor so it's uniform throughout and then you would still want to emphasize that area especially if it's continuous with rug and positioning of your furniture
I think most of us are not intentional by nature because we've been raised to be in constant sympathetic nervous mode where we're just not aware of ourselves others and our surrounding and of course this is the addiction to social media
We're overstimulated and so having a hard time focusing attention in one area
I try not to draw my inspiration from others I try to let the space and the materials in that space guide me
So right now I have a so-called beanbag chair which is stuffed with foam so it's not really a beanbag chair is it?
That was my original inspiration and then I like furniture material such as rattan wicker those types of things
    I like light and airy
As far as lighting is concerned I think the best lighting in the world is natural and I love it so much
So that goes along with what I've already shared
But I have another side of me that really likes dark and moody
    I do like Rich
    I like opulence
I enjoy minimalism and I am very much love Maximalism so I think I'm confused to a degree but I'm just appealing to all sides of my nature
I think lighting in a dark and moody environment would make more sense to a person who doesn't really have any understanding of lighting whatsoever because then it would have to be extremely intentional and yes you would want to focus lighting areas that you wish to accentuate like you said whether it's a piece of furniture a space that someone would need extra lighting in to navigate plants or a floral arrangement or something of that nature books
as I get older I think those types of things really interest me and I would have to say that a person who is a designer more than likely has an attention for detail and that's why they gravitated to this field and of course they might have a lot of Venus in their chart where they really enjoy things that are aesthetically pleasing
There was an area of interest which wasn't mentioned and I think it might be a good idea for you to take this into consideration and if you have no understanding perhaps educate yourself because you were touching on it but it wasn't being discussed and perhaps it's because you know but we weren't conveying that way that people should know about and understand
Set mood and there is a specific reason for not being aesthetic
You mentioned feelings and disruptive and having the wrong vibe and it is true that there is such a thing as dirty electric and this is an actual science space study that test that certain lighting apparatuses actually admit electric and it can be a health hazard which would explain why some people can't explain why they're not comfortable in that space it could very well have to do with the lighting itself
People who are using certain lightbulbs and they're using it for task like reading themselves to potentially dangerous substances that are being admitted from their lighting and they could end up with something like cancer
As long as you educate yourself and which are the safest lighting options in conjunction with what you're trying to achieve and you're attempting to balance things where isn't unnatural I think it would work very well for any person who is learning the safety and the mechanisms behind design

O m g!!!! I’ve been struggling with what light I should put in my apartment-hallway-entryway-foyer and I think the directional canned ceiling light would be amazing! I have a large piece of art in my foyer so I can direct it towards there. #intentionallighting !!! Thank you!

Thank you so much for your lighting advice. I have changed my mind about installing can lights in my great room and the caged light in my dining room! Also explaining the light temperature has really helped me know what light bulbs to replace my old ones with. The lighting strips in the correct area has been invaluable and I will not be using colored ones! Again, thanks!
