I didn’t know what a floating axle was now I understand it makes sense thank you for this demonstration
Thanks for watching, thanks for commenting
Good explanation man these Advantek Dana 44s are really robust already compared to older 44s and now with the full float out back I reckon breaking axles will be a lot less likely on bigger tires.
Agreed! Thanks for watching!
So it’s basically a cv shaft ? In a sense. Right?
I can see that being a comparison - yes.
so if you have disc brakes on the rear, won't the caliper and disc keep the wheel in place if the axel brakes on a semi floating axel?
Very helpful video and easy to understand

Great vid. I’ve been driving semi’s for years. I never knew it was called a floating axle and I assumed all vehicles had floating axles 😁. Now I know
Thanks for watching and commenting. Safe travels on the road!
only c-clip axles allow the tire to fall off if you break a shaft
I’m a truck driver. The floating axle on a semi axle pass though the hub assembly. So you can pull the axles without removing anything else. Now if you see a semi tractor pulling other tractors if they stop you more than likely see plywood in the wheel assembly on the semi tractors that is getting pulled. Now about safety I wouldn’t know but if you really look at a semi truck and trailer they are built to repair them. Like the inline six under the hood can be rebuilt in the frame of the semi truck even the cylinder can be replaced. The axles and differential can be replaced without lifting the truck off the ground I think maybe on the side of the roadway if needed. Now the Jeep’s axle I would guess it would pass through the wheel assembly like a semi truck except the front axles but the axle the hub holds the weight of the Jeep’s front unlike the back axle on my JK. But that looks like a upgrade in the future for my Jeep.
Thanks! I work as a Product Specialist on events for Jeep this was very helpful!
@@tamerawenrich2423 thanks for watching, glad this helped.
We bought our first Jeep a few weeks ago. Rub X with 35's. The rear axle is a Dana M220 wide full float and front is a 3G Dana 44.
Thanks for explanation of the FF axle.
love the Jeep look forward see what it can do on the trails
@@blj_1970 congrats on the Jeep!! ♥
First Jeep had them WW2 Willys MB fully floating axles, only the bean counters who removed them in civilian Jeeps, JEEP MAKE THEM STANDARD ON ALL WRANGLERS go back to having standard parts on all Jeeps, will reduce cost of Jeeps.......
:)
Honestly this made sense and someone that has no mechanical knowledge I truly understood, it made a lot of sense.
Thanks for the comments, and thanks for watching!
Great explanation. Very helpful. I have a question that perhaps you can provide clarity about. I have a 2023 Rubicon 392 and have ordered a 2024 392 because of the increased tow capacity. However, upon reading documentation online, Jeep clearly states that all Rubicons are getting the full floating axle and they mention the towing increase BUT they also say (paraphrased" (the 2.0 and 3.6 get an increase to 5000 lbs". SO, it appears that the towing capacity may not be increased on the 392. Unsure of why this would be? Perhaps cooling?
That's interesting, I think you might be onto something with the cooling. Back in the day the 5.9L grand cherokee had a situation like this too, with lower tow ratings. It was a cooling issue as well. I'll do some digging to see if I can't get some info.
I’m a mustang drag racer and who does his own installs but I had no idea what floating axle meant,I’m like C clip eliminators?? Nope,,now I get it. I bought a gladiator after a couple wranglers daily drivers because I wanted 44s without paying rubicon money. I don’t like running 35s on a sport. Love the gladiator
We appreciate the comments. Are you loving the gladiator?
I am not mechanically inclined and appreciate your explanation!
Thanks for watching
Thank you. Your explanation was very helpful.
Thanks for watching. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you for just jumping right in with no fluff. Awesome
Thanks for watching! I appreciate your comments too.
Question my friend- when I saw the tfl video on this and they mentioned it I looked at the wheels and noticed the hubs didn’t stick out thru the rims. Do you know if this is an updated design vs the traditional full float 3/4 and 1 ton axles of the past? Glad this video came up on my feed I subscribed!
I have an image of it, but I can't post in the comments. Feel free to join us in jeeps on the run Facebook page.
I’ve been racking my brain about why the new Jeep can tow so much vs my 22 .
Thanks
You bet! Thanks for watching, and thanks for the response
Thank you for explanation
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
is rear axle in 2024 or both have floating
My understanding is its the Rear. (Rubicon)
and as soon as i see one of these jeeps with said full float axle it is going under my diesel gladiator and if i can ill get one for my jeep Lj :D
Now we're talking!
@@JeepsOnTheRun heck yeah id hate to see a jeep in the wreckin yard but ill happily take that axle lol :D
@@thatmand4542 lol agreed! These will be in hot demand.
Great vid. Keep ‘em coming.
Thanks for watching - thanks for comments!
Thank you for the explanation. Now I have a clue of what the different will be 👌
Thanks for watching!
There is more than just semi-floating and full floating axles. There is also a three-quarter floating.
-Semi floating or "half floating" axle uses a carrier bearing on both sides of the differential carrier and an axle bearing on each end of the axle tube. The wheels are bolted to the axle itself. So this axle wood have 4 bearings, and use C-clips to hold the axles in place.
-A full floating axle uses an inner and outer bearing at each end of the axle tube(one is an axle bearing and the other is a wheel hub bearing) and an inner and outer bearing on each side of the differential (where one is a carrier bearing and the other is an inner axle bearing), this complete axle assembly would have eight bearings but the wheel is bolted to a wheel hub assembly which is bolted to the axle tube.
- The three quarter floating axle has the wheel hub bearing and an outer axle bearing like the full floating axle has with all the safety and load strength, but they don't have an inner axle bearing because the carrier bearing is strong enough due to that end not carrying weight. There is really no down side to the 3/4 floating axle.
Yes, very good info. My description was very surface level.
@@JeepsOnTheRun great conversation to have here though. So many people don't understand the differences.
@@fabulousoffroaddesigns5080 agreed! I appreciate your comments, and thanks for watching!
And don’t forget the important thing is when you have a locker, you can lock it and drive
Does anyone know the spline count?
I'll see if I can't get the info
I can't believe it's taken this long for Dana to update these, especially on what some would consider THE off-road vehicle. My Jeep Commander has floating axles and they're built by Chrysler, over 15 years ago for that matter
No doubt!
these axles will also be able to be added onto the Willys package in 2024
Excellent video
Thanks for your comments!
But the videos of the new Jeeps don’t show a hub on the new rear axles. I will wait for a video that actually removes a rear wheel and lets us see the end of the axle before I accept it as a true full float. Thanks and you can drive off the trail with a broken semi float axle without losing the wheel.
Thanks for the comments.
Great explanantion.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
I have a 2021 Jeep 392 rubicon unlimited and wish to tow more !
Q: can I get the floating axle installed to increase the tow capacity and roughly how much would it cost to that.
Also would other things need to be done along with it .
While most people upgrade to the floating axle for off road benefits - it does help with that weight handling like we spoke of. Keep in mind making modifications to help with tow capability is a tough topic. Even if it does help, the Jeep isn't rated for that increase from factory. So if you were above the factory specs, and caused an accident - it could be a can of worms.
😊
What's your thought of thr new Wrangler?
@@JeepsOnTheRun like the axle upgade and increased towing, wish I could tow 6×12 trailer loaded. I'm running the xtreme rubicon with stock 35 which is good for everyday driving. My offroad is mostly logging roads in Maine, no real rock climbing. But towing is handy for moving brush and picking up supplies or pulling snowmobile. I do have a power wagon though.
@@RoryVanucchi got to love the power wagon for the hauling! 😊
Dude, that was a excellent! Thank you very much
Thanks for watching - thanks for the comments too.
I didn’t understand what a floating axle is and I still don’t understand what it is.😂
LOL - well sorry we couldn't help - but thanks for watching!
A full float axle is splined on both ends and slides into the hub to connect with the differential, withouthaving to remove the wheel or anything else to replace it. A simi float has a flang on the wheel side that bolts to the rim. So you have to remove a lot of stuff in order to repair it.
GR8 VIDEO THANKZZZ FOR SHARING!!!
Thanks for watching!
Would the front drive still be able to move the vehicle?
Meaning if the rear was broken?
@@JeepsOnTheRun
Yes. If the rear axle is broken but with the float it would still be straight on the hub. Front wheel drive?
@@CWChandler1968 in theory, yes.
If you had to limp off a trail, but there's concerns I'd have with creating further damage to the axle and 4wd system. I'd not advise trying
I'm more confused now.
Let us know how we can help!
OK. Makes sense. Thanks.

Great, just got a 2023 JL Rubicon. This would be nice.
I guess the good news is, you got your jl before the price increase
@@JeepsOnTheRun Yep, I ordered it last September and took delivery in December so I saved a bunch.
@@rodneyavery3537 I wouldn't be too sad about the floating axle. Congratulations on the Jeep! Be sure to join our Facebook page too!
You and I are on the same page. Got my 2023 and when this was announced I was like “ damn it Daniel.” I was going to buy my uncles boat but the jeep can’t tow it because the boat on the trailer is 4,700LBS. And seeing this update on the 2024 …. It is frustrating.
@@DamienDavidO I understand. Honestly, even the 5k tow capacity worries me. The wrangle doesn't make a great toe vehicle due to the wheelbase size
