      How's the depth of stage, is it flat like many DS dacs, or closer to a 3d presentation as some good R2R dacs seem to display?
      Also, how about separation? I think that adds to overall performance and not just having a wall of sound thrown at you.

    I watched this video on Sunday at 7:30am and after listening to Randy’s opinion and glowing review of this DAC, I emailed Geshelli Labs 20 mins later concerning wood options for the case, as appearance is just as important TO ME as sound quality and I prefer that all of my gear matches aesthetically.
    I was expecting a reply this week but to my complete surprise and utter amazement, my phone rang at 11:15a the same day… on a SUNDAY and it was Sherri from Geshelli labs!
    We had wonderful and very informative conversation about not only wood options which aren’t available on their site but about the history of the company as well.
    Geshelli Labs has earned a customer for life in me.
    Thanks Randy and Sherri!
    I’ve finally found my DAC.

    You need more subscribers because the content you bring is not only well produced, but is applicable to a large audience of "common" audiophiles who will never buy a $100000 audio system. I have some of the equipment you've reviewed and agree with many of your reviews, and you have opened my eyes to options I've never heard of. Thanks!

    This has to be one of the best values in audio. Mine arrived about 10 days ago and the resolution, soundstage and top-to-bottom balance are outstanding. I really like the idea of supporting US companies, and when I saw a few interviews with the Geshelli's I loved their story and took a flyer on this DAC. I figured that if this wasn't as good as I'd hoped I'd just use it for my desktop audio system. I'll simply say that it exceeded all my expectations and then some, and its balanced outputs are now feeding my Audio Research line stage and power amp, which is driving my Maggies. My system has never sounded so good. Hard to believe that a $300 product could have this impact (I added the USB input option). Highly recommended.

      @@andrehb I use Roon for library management, content navigation, and Qobuz integration. Roon Core runs on an iMac with Roon Bridge on a headless (no monitor, keyboard or mouse) Mac Mini in my equipment rack. DAC is connected by a short USB cable and MacOS recognizes it as a CoreAudio device. From Roon Settings -> Audio it will appear by default as "Combo384 Amareno". Just have to enable it and optionally rename it. Obviously, a direct USB connection from a Mac or Windows machine will be simpler but the key is that with MacOS and later versions of Windows it's simply "seen" as a USB audio device.

    So I got my Geshelli J2 AKM Dac today. I don’t have a lot of experience with DACs, Ifi Zen and SMSL SU-8s are probably the best I have had. The difference is amazing. I used the J2 with the Xduoo MT-604 and Hifiman Anandas(non stealth) An amazing experience. I realized I might not have used your link but I did message them and tell them you were the reason I bought the J2. I sent this “thanks” hoping you will have a nice cup of coffee and smile because you know your efforts are appreciated. So Thanks!
    PS I think you will get this. I have a couple of frustrating days in a row. Once I got the Dac hooked up and started listening, I started to feel joy again. Music is amazing. Also, I wanted to recommend an artist to you, that I have fallen in love with. Her name is Tash Sultana. Not sure if her sound is to your liking but I figure you might appreciate her.

    This goes towards my theory that it isn't just the DAC chip that makes a good piece of kit, that a good engineer can make a middling DAC sound good with careful design of the rest of the device or make an excellent DAC chip sound worse than it should. Power delivery, component selection, circuit design and PCB layout are all just as critical as the chip of the week. Turbocharging a Yugo, well, it's still a Yugo.

    • @spamcan9208
      @spamcan9208 Год назад +6

      I think implementation plays a bigger part then people realize. I don't know much about circuit design and electronic components but I do know if you don't plan out the traces and locations correctly you can cause all sorts of problems.

    • @NeilBlanchard

      All that, and the op-amps, as well. The J2 has 3 output op-amps from Texas Instruments - 1 for the single ended and 2 for the balanced.

      I mean the RME Adi-2 DAC (1300 USD) also uses the same chip as my 125 USD DAC hat for rasberry Pi. So it's not the DAC chip!

    • @scotto9712
      @scotto9712 Год назад +1

      It's ALL implementation for PCM decoding. The actual encoding/decoding is a trivial piece of computing these days (for example- this AKM j2 is rated at 384kbps. A $500 video card can pump 448 'G'bps and it's far more unforgiving in terms of detectable errors-overly simplified but you get it). As mentioned - op amps, compression algorithms and software, power supplies, those all are a bigger deal than the chip.

    I am still using the equipment that I put together more than 30 years ago and not been tempted yet to splash out on new stuff because I simply love the sound quality that I already have apart from stuff being replaced when broken or worn out. I have added however a Bludento BLT-2 to play music from my iPhone through my hifi. I can’t believe how good the sound is for less than £60 direct from the company. I think it has some kind of Texas maybe Saber DAC and looks very well made, loads of connections including optical and all the interconnections are included. I would urge you to test one. Thank you again.

      I have the BLT-HD by Bludento and it really is an amazing component. The DAC in there really does a beautiful job and I'd argue that it sounds very close to a decent WIFI streamer. And agree 100% that it is a solid, well built piece of equipment, for very little money. I will say that when I upgraded the RCA cables it sounded even better.

    • @tonyjedioftheforest1364
      @tonyjedioftheforest1364 Год назад +1

      @@ramondelgado6778 totally agree with your comments including fitting better RCA cables. The HD and 2 are identical I believe sound quality wise but the 2 is Bluetooth 5.1 as opposed to 5.0 on the HD. I can’t compare with a music streamer as I have never listened to one but use Apple Music and Spotify both lossless from my iPhone 11 and I am very impressed with the music. I do have very good vinyl turntables and CD players that were expensive and yes they are better but I can assure you not by much. Slightly better detail and soundstage but for everyday listening with the massive convenience of having a vast music collection on my iphone and icloud what is not to like. In fact I can listen all day without fatigue jumping from one album to another in seconds.

      @@tonyjedioftheforest1364 I'm a music streamer, primarily, and having said that, I moved up the line of streaming from Bluetooth with the HD2 to the Bluesound Node 2i ($550). The sound quality is better, but it is NOT night and day better. More open, a bit warmer, more detailed, but again, not night and day. If you critically listen to music, and have a revealing system, you will be able to pick them apart. Casual listening or just listening to music while doing things, even less of a difference. I recently purchased the WiiM Mini streamer for $89, out of curiosity, due to the great reviews. Using the optical output on both, using the internal DAC of my old Sony ES STR-DA555ES, Emotiva TA-100, and Marantz PM7000N, they sound virtually identical. It makes me regret the purchase of the Node 2i. Looking back, I would rather have gone with the WiiM Mini streamer and a Gishelli Labs J2 DAC for $330 total and would like have a higher level streaming experience. The J2 with the new AKM DAC will be my next purchase. Gotta sell some stuff first so my wife doesn't murder me. Haha!

      @@ramondelgado6778 sounds like the difference that I perceive with my turntable/CD system and the BLT-2. Not much in it and certainly not several thousand £/$ difference. I have read great reviews of the iFi Zen Blue which is British made and that is still only £150. In fact Paul Rigby the Audiophile Man recommended it. That will probably be my next purchase as I have 3 systems set up in my house so I do need more Bluetooth streamers and if it’s better still then it would be a win win situation. To be honest this has all been an eye opener for me with the quality available for very little money these days compared to the 1980’s/ 90’s.

      @@tonyjedioftheforest1364 Tony, you got me thinking that I should pull out my boxed up BluDento HD2 and do some A/B sound comparison's to the Node 2i / WiiM Mini WIFI streamers and see that now having adjusted to WIFI streaming, how well does the BluDento HD2 hold up? From my recollection, the HD2 (about three years ago when I first purchased it) was soo good to my ears, that I sold both of my CD players and small CD collection because I did not have the space and didn't think they sounded any better. That says alot about that little unit (+ $80 Maze Audio Reference RCA interconnects) which really does something special. Previously I was using a 1/2 meter mono price RCA cable that I believed was a weak link. I purchased the Maze Audio cable to connect a pre-amp to an amplifier and thought, why not try them out with the Bludento. Wow! I could not believe how much better it sounded. Like it was muffled before. Later, I purchased a $25 RCA cable that sounded pretty much the same (World's Best RCA cables). Thank you for your time sharing your experiences.

I have a Geshelli stack (J2 and E2) for my headphone setup, they both have Purple Heart cases with the Smoke color front and back plates. I also switched out the aluminum volume knob on the E2 amp to a matching Purple Heart knob. It looks way better than any of my other gear from Schiit (Modi 3, Modi Multibit) or Topping (E50 in red). I also think it looks better than similar offerings from SMSL, JDS Labs, Massdrop, etc.

    Some might find this interesting/helpful. I've had the jnog2 akm for about a month now paired with elac navis arb51's. I was a bit underwhelmed at first compared to the schiit modi multibit (original without usb unison). There was slightly better soundstage and upper frequency clarity compared to former dac. I'm happy to report after plugging in audiquest jitterbug fmj that everything opened up with the soundstage and detail. It truly is the kind of sound I've been after for the last 6 years. The emotions that came out of the music hearing tracks I've heard over and over before is staggering. Stuff I've heard many times over caused literal tears. I'm not sure if some of it is the dac needed some burn in period? But it seems this usb line conditioner any jitter made an absolutely huge difference for this dac.

All I can say is that based on the reviews of the jitterbug fmj and my first hand experience, it made a massive difference for my setup into pc via usb. I received my JNOG2 DAC and Archel 2.5 XL 3 days ago. I initially was using it close to the desktop computer (my music source), and was just using the stack with Audioquest Nighthawk headphones. It took a half hour, or so before they started sounding good. Definitely more musical than my computers sound card. I upgraded the included USB cable, and the sound got smoother (buttery). Then I moved the stack closer to my Outlaw receiver.l hooked the DAC to the receiver using the RCA outputs with World’s Best Cables RCA connects. It got rid of some harshness in the upper midrange of my Martin Logan 35XT speakers. I thought the soundstage was plenty good horizontally, and vertically depending on the music it was fed. I hooked up the J2 to the Archel 2.5 XL using World’s Best Cables XLR connects. Even though the USB cable I was using then was 15 ft. I didn’t seem to lose any performance with the headphone amp. Now I’m set. The only down side to where it’s at is I have to get up to control music files at the computer. Thanks for recommending these products, Randy. As a bonus I received three burrito stickers with my order. Gotta love that Florida family.

    I've been tempted to upgrade from my IFI Zen Dac II. The Geshelli looks sweet and other reviews are great, but truth is, I don;t need all of the inputs. I only listen to my music via headphones and I only use the balanced "pentagram" cable anyway. I sold all my components because they just took up space and I rarely used any of them. As tempted as I am with the J2, it's just way more complex than I need. And truth be told, my Zen Dac II is really, really sweet. I just recently received my new Geshelli J2 with the ES9026PRO chip. From my initial test with my Audiolab 6000CDT, playing various discs such as the wonderful James Taylor "Gorilla", I'm here to report a very solid and wide soundstage, with ultra clear natural definition of voices and instruments. The tricky controls of the J2 were actually not bad if one reads the tersely written instructions on line. I fiddled with the Power and Input buttons just to experiment with the various features of the unit with no problem. My setup initially is to utilize the coax digital input on the rear panel. Results were very very good indeed. Tomorrow I'll experiment with the optical input. I didn't get the USB because I don't utilize my computer very much for audio source. For those folks considering a DAC upgrade at this time I would urge you to consider the Geshelli J2 with the ES9026PRO chipset with no trepidation whatsoever. The relative low cost and high performance level makes it a no brainier. Incidentally my case option was the aluminum dark charcoal with amber faceplate. A thing of beauty.

    • @rosswarren436
      @rosswarren436 Год назад +5

      @@michaellucas4953 ah, but people do hear a difference and there's the rub. If the two J2 DACs are designed by the same competent engineers, and are using the same analog op-amps, then any differences have to mainly be between the DAC chips themselves.
      Many (like Randy) have noted the better bass of the AKM chip based one over the others.
      And one guy on here I talked with said the AKM one came very close to sounding as good as the Denafrips Ares II, with even better bass than the Ares II delivers.
      Of course everyone raves about the "scale, imaging, and soundstage" of R2R DACs like the Ares II, the Pontus II, Shuman Ladder, and on up the food chain into DACs costing more than $4K.
      And yes, those on Audiogon (an audio forum) who have such equipment (and more importantly, commensurately priced gear and speakers in good rooms) say they can hear differences that are better at any price range.
      For me, the $350 J2 AKM version or Schiit $800 Bifrost 2/64 are likely "good enough" for my ~$7K system, but I sure wish I could hear the $880 Ares II or "better" Musician Pegasus just as a point of comparison to see what they present.
      One guy, iiWi Reviews, reviewed a $300 Aune X8 MK. VIII (uses a ESS Sabre DAC chip) that has user replaceable op-amp chips (no soldering required) and he found a HUGE difference in changing them out (they are $50 to $80) and found ones by Burr Brown and Sparkos were excellent in presentation.
      Maybe Geshelli Labs uses better op-amps in their J2 as a baseline.

    If you do review one of these Emotiva DACs, could you include some comparisons with one of the Geshelli DACs, please? I’ve been running a Little Ego+ from an old laptop into my amp as my main sound source, with a TIDAL subscription linked from your channel. I like the Emotiva’s sound quite a bit better than the built-in DAC in my Cambridge Audio Azur 651A amplifier. I got this AKM version. The sound is really similar to the SMSL M400. They both add some heft and motion to the lower midrange and bass, in a pleasant way. I'd say the J2 is a bit more up front in presentation, while the M400 is a bit more 3 dimensional and airy on the top end. The difference is very subtle. M400 seems a little more wide for soundstage, but again it's very subtle. Imaging goes to the J2 by a hair. Considering the price difference between them, and the fact that they sound almost the same, the J2 is an insane value. Plus it has 2 optical and coax inputs. No bluetooth (purists gasp), but an LDAC receiver from Amazon took care of that for about $70. LOL at folks speculating that it can't sound as good as DAC "X", when they haven't even heard it.

    You should try this with OPA1656 opamp. It will need SOIC to PDIP adapter to be able to go inside the DAC. The sound is really great. I paired it with Emotiva B2+ and I’m blown away!

    Hey Randy, do you think this would be a worthwhile upgrade from the internal dac of the SVS Prime Wireless Soundbase? I'd only be using the single ended feature.

      @@ChicagoRob2 I purchased the 3+. I wasn't sure what the differences were between the models. Schiit sent me an email saying the 3E uses a different chip compared to the 3+ due to supply chain constraints. I can only assume it affects the sound characteristic, but I wasn't sure how much. Has anyone compared the 2 versions?

      @@bencarignan2711 I have the 3+ and 3E. The 3E has the ES9018 chip. To my my ears, the 3E is more laid-back and smoother. A lot depends on the amplification and speakers. A warmer system might sound better with the 3+.

    I would sure like to know how it compares to other 2 J2 version with other DAC chips. It sounds like a better version of the Bluesound streamer with its fuller midrange and bass. With an integrated with a lively DAC, I could see running this into the analog input and changing the sound between the 2 as I desired. The AK DAC sounds like more of the Burr Brown DAC chip sound than the ESS sound.

    Do you still recommend that $15 prozor DAC? I remember you saying that it's pretty good and a sizable step up from what's built into TVs and DVD players.
    I have a DVD player that I use for CDs in my system. Should I just get the prozor and move on or should I step up to the Geshelli? (My system is that $179 Sony receiver, Jamo S 803 speakers, cheap Polk sub, and fluance rt82). Is my system good enough to where the better Geshelli DAC will make a significant difference? Or is the prozor closer to where the rest of my system is at?

    I had the early AKM version of the J2. I wonder how the new one would compare? One thing I noticed about the new one: it uses a TI DIX9211 SPDIF chip while the OG version used an AKM SPDIF chip. Not sure how big of a difference that would make. Anyways, Geshelli is a great company with even better people! Cheers, Randy!

      They may be using different op-amp chips, now as well? Mine have three TI chips - one for the single ended output, and two for the balanced.

      @@beslemeto Not really - they are surface mounted and you would have to unsolder them and solder in the new ones. The three opamps are all TI 1656 or TI 1612. Two for the balanced and one for single ended. They sound amazing!

      @@beslemeto I have two J2 AKM DACs - in my main system I am using it single ended; and in my desktop system I am using it balanced. It sounds great either way.
      The thing that makes a very big difference for me - is using a 12V linear power supply. Basically everything gets better with an LPS. This is my reference DAC - I also own a Schiit Bifrost 2/64 and Denafrips Ares II. The J2 AKM with a linear power supply beats both these at their strengths.
