- Dangerous overtaking, jumping red lights and driving on pavements are just some of the examples of poor driving highlighted in the latest video from Devon & Cornwall Police’s Op Snap.
The operation, which allows members of the public to submit dashcam, helmet-cam and mobile phone video footage of poor driving, has now surpassed 10,000 submissions since it was introduced in 2019 - with action being taken against more than 7,000 road users.
In the latest highlight reel, released by the Vision Zero South West road safety partnership, we see one particularly dangerous overtaking manoeuvre near Woodbury in Devon which almost results in a head-on collision with another car.
We also see three drivers mounting the pavement in order to get past other vehicles - something which is both illegal and dangerous. Two of these clips were submitted by local recycling services who have cameras operating at 360 degrees around their lorries.
Other clips in the reel show one driver travelling through a red light on the wrong side of the road, and another crossing solid white lines and a hatched area to overtake on the A394 between Rame and Helston in Cornwall.
Adrian Leisk, Devon and Cornwall Police’s Head of Road Safety, said: “The vast majority of road users in Devon & Cornwall are good drivers who behave in a responsible and respectful manner.
“Sadly there remains a small minority who still think the rules of the road don’t apply to them and continue to drive in an unacceptable and sometimes dangerous way.
“Police officers can’t be everywhere - and the good news is that as dashcam and helmet camera ownership increases, we are now receiving video evidence of thousands of incidents - often within hours of them taking place.
“Op Snap has now surpassed 10,000 submissions, with action being taken against more than 7,000 road users as a result. We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of our communities in reducing road harm.
“If you drive dangerously in Devon and Cornwall, there is a very good chance someone will have captured it on camera and will submit that footage to the police. This could lead to you being fined, receiving penalty points or potentially even losing your license - it’s just not worth the risk.”

The driver training course needs to be in ADDITION to any fines/points . The fines are derisory anyway
The risks taken to save a few minutes with no regard for other road users safety is absolute madness, thanks for sharing, need more Police areas to do the same.
tbh it amazes me how low the fines are. I mean driver awareness for that van driving againt the wall. Don't know about "Won't be tolerated"
The fines and points are not enough for these offences.
A £100 fine hardly worth the police taking action, no deterrent at all
Well shoplifting and burglary the police are not interested at all if your talking no deterrent
Depends on the person tbh, but yeah most people wouldn't care about 100 fine
Now I know why the police didn’t have time to watch the CCTV footage of my motorbike being stolen.
Hard to believe the punishment for the level of bad driving in these clips is about the same as would be dished out for a minor speeding offence. Not condoning speeding of course, but it feels like these clips show a much worse level of driving than doing something like 46mph in a 40 limit.
True. Especially the car taking the kerb with the refuse lorry and then just actually driving towards a pedestrian isn't just 'worth' a driver training course, but would at least get you a hefty fine in The Netherlands, but possibly even your license revoked for breach of article 5 of the motorway code: 'Behaving yourself in such a way that you hinder or endanger other road users'
The fines are pathetic.
Fines are calculated by reference to an offender's net weekly income (their income after deducting tax). Some offences, like drink driving and driving with no insurance carry unlimited fines so there is no maximum amount.
How bad does it have to be to be considered dangerous? A drive by shooting?
No, that's still in proper control.
Don't be silly, if they observe the highway code it's fine.
I beleive there thas to be some proof of intent with "dangerous" rather than "I just made an error of judgement"
Dangerous driving
The offence of dangerous driving is when driving falls far below the minimum standard expected of a competent and careful driver, and includes behaviour that could potentially endanger yourself or other drivers.
Examples
speeding, racing, or driving aggressively
ignoring traffic lights, road signs or warnings from passengers
overtaking dangerously
driving under the influence of drink or drugs, including prescription drugs
driving when unfit, including having an injury, being unable to see clearly, not taking prescribed drugs, or being sleepy
knowing the vehicle has a dangerous fault or an unsafe load
Distractions are also causes of dangerous driving, for example:
using a hand-held phone or other equipment
reading, or looking at a map
talking to and looking at a passenger
lighting a cigarette, selecting music, tuning the radio
Careless or inconsiderate driving
The offence of driving without due care and attention (careless driving) is committed when your driving falls below the minimum standard expected of a competent and careful driver, and includes driving without reasonable consideration for other road users.
Examples
overtaking on the inside
driving too close to another vehicle
driving through a red light by mistake
turning into the path of another vehicle
the driver being avoidably distracted by tuning the radio, lighting a cigarette etc
flashing lights to force other drivers to give way
misusing lanes to gain advantage over other drivers
unnecessarily staying in an overtaking lane
unnecessarily slow driving or braking
dazzling other drivers with un-dipped headlights
The white van on the pavement at the end is just awful; it would only take a child to run out of their path on to the pavement, or indeed any adult simply walking out of their gate, and they would have been wiped-out. dreadful person, really.
See this atleast 20 or Moor times aday as I work as bin man working along the roads allday
Wish Australian police forces would adopt the same policy.
1.34 should have been a ban . Dangerous , without due car and failure to comply with road markings ! With the penalty given , no wonder drivers do it , NO deterrent , no morals - no licence ??
It depends who the drivers are, their occupation and background/origin as to what action is taken. They don't want to upset people.
wow some properly disgracefull driving i here
You should see the standard of driving in Cardiff, red lights seem to optional, as does giving way at roundabouts and junctions.
Far too lenient
There is no consistency between forces D&C’s definition of a close pass is much closer than that of A&S, so much so that I don’t even both submitting to D&C as I know they will be NFA’s, the one shown here is not typical in my experience.
It's so frustrating to report dangerous driving with video evidence for the police to do nothing
At 01:48 how do you only get a driver training course for driving up a pavement towards a pedestrian? Give some more information about the driver, also how this was decided as an appropriate way to deal with them.
I think that is so wrong as it could have easily been a death of a pedestrian. Would you have blamed the person on the pavement for not moving out of the way?
You are given an option in many cases pay a fine or take a course but you are responsible for paying the course fee in full before you take the course. If you book and pay for a course then choose to re-book it with the same course provider, you may have to pay a re-booking/ administration fee.
I was just ‘making progress’.🙃
I just ran red light feel so bad for it 😌, its my first offence, do you get to go on a course or do you have points to ??
I totally disagree with the driver training course. The driver should receive fines, pay costs, receive penalty points AND go on an awareness course. The course alone is not an enough deterrent.
What was wrong with the one at 1:07 ?
He had the opportunity to hit the bike and didn't, v bad driving, roads are for cars lol
Sod all wrong with that one.
Overtaking the cyclist too closely. You can see the other driver leaving enough space. Leave at least 1.5 meters of space when overtaking a cyclist.
Has the cyclist considered using the pavement @@OllyKilo
@@captainjames4649 Unless it's shared use they legally have to use the road. And legally, drivers are required to drive with due care and attention.
Meanwhile burglary goes undetected, general crimes get ignored, but never mind, as long as the speed cameras catch and milk the motorist plus the county has been converted into a bunch of of snitches, it'll all be ok.
I think maybe people with cameras are also a problem! 😮
Definitely, a lot of them just got out deliberately to set up things they can film to try and earn money from. They know exactly what they're doing and make sure they get in the way or move across deliberately. I bet if you examine the phone data of the victims, it shows them driving up and down the same parts of roads on multiple occasions just looking for the next target.
☹️ "promo sm"
People with dash cams tend to be the worst drivers. I've noticed it out on the road. (40,000 miles per year)
They think it's everyone else.😂
absolute grasses
I know, right.
I hate it when other road users get in my way.
Especially, bin-men AND children who might want to use the pavement.
Can’t they all see that I’M the most important person?

Who needs more police when you can get the public to snitch for you.
'Snitch'?! Are you still at school? A lot of this is downright dangerous driving and they might involve you one day! Be a different story then eh?!
@@telmas7183the police are focusing more on this than stopping actual crime at this point
So if you witnessed a serious offence of any descriptions whether it was a motoring offence or anything else, would you not prefer to give evidence to get that person caught and convicted or would you snitching even if it was a murder?
@@telmas7183 nope. you tards arnt doing this for safety reasons you are doing in for spite.
@Graham196 or you mind your own business the uk police force are funded billions and have thr most advanced cctv network in the world next to China and USA. The public snitching for the police is just textbook snitching
