This gave me PTSD about my own wedding.
When my now husband and I talked about getting married back in late 2011, we already had an idea of the date in mind. Fast forward to April of 2012, I told my grandmother about the engagement, and that the date was set for our 11th anniversary together. I had the wedding planned out. It was supposed to be a small beach wedding in Cancun, as back then gay marriage wasn't legal in all of Mexico, but it was in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, where Cancun is. My now brother in law was to be my husband's best man, and my husband's nephew was supposed to be mine. I had NO intention of telling my mother, because I was still miffed that not only was I left out of her 1993 wedding, I was the last to know about it, and I knew right away that my mother would make it about her. But my grandmother insisted on me telling her, so I did.
Right from the jump, my mother hijacked everything about the wedding. EVERYTHING. Me, falling (again)for that FUCKING FALSE NARRATIVE of blood being thicker than water, I relented because my grandmother convinced me to let her be "a mom".
It wasn't until after my husband and I said our vows that it dawned on me that my mother just wanted to rub it in her sister's face that because my mother got a new job at a prestigious NYC law firm, she had $$$$ now, and saw the wedding as an opportunity to do so.
Here's the kicker: My grandmother had the AWW-DA-CITY to tell me "I can't believe your mother did that on your day of all days." To which I replied, " That's EXACTLY why I didn't want her involved, you fucking moron!"
Here's the kicker, Part Two: My mother's name is Lia. Hence the PTSD.

I admittedly have some money to spend and I come from a humble wealthy family. I love to give to people, but unfortunately I had a friend like Lia...We will call her Melissa, and stopped doing as much so because it kind of messed up my trust in people. I'm too nice and I get taken advantage of because of how much I love to give. Even my husband AND my ex back in the day told me that I needed to be more careful and that they think Melissa and maybe some others take advantage of me. I stopped giving so much for awhile and the friends that stuck around were the real ones. All I had to do was put away my wallet and naturally weed out the Melissa's - it was actually easy and fast. You have to be careful out there...

You pay them back in time, love, attention, being thankful and sure as hell not asking for more! My cousin was really struggling in his science classes (I have a degree in Environmental science and I went to a specialize science university) so I of course offered to tutor him. They lived in a different state so I offered to do it online, but my aunt missed me so she flew me out to visit for two weeks and tutor him for his finals. Good for 'Sara' and the rest of the friends!
My uncle suggested that we all go out for dinner together, and said he would invite his Dad because he always pays. He planned for us to go to a reasonably expensive well known chain restaurant.
My parents frequently invite my Grandfather to dinners at home and we love spending time with him.
But after the meal at the restaurant, I made sure to pay for myself, my husband, my parents', and my grandfather's meals, without asking anyone first. [The restaurant had one of those tablets on the table so I could easily split the bill.]
My 2 brothers are over 30, so I wasn't concerned about paying for them, and I'm definitely not paying for my uncle and his kids.
My uncle however was really embarrassed once he realized what I did. My grandfather still ended up paying for everyone else. They had all ordered expensive things because they knew they wouldn't be paying, but at least it was less. [I had paid 1/3 of the bill.]

I had a friend like this in high school. I had just moved schools in year 9, and I quickly became really close friends with this very extroverted girl who had been very welcoming when I first arrived. I had never had real friends before, so I was so excited when I became a part of her lovely friend group. Fast forward to the last few weeks of school for the year, and when we were talking about our Christmas plans, she mumbled something along the lines of "hmmm, I wonder what I'm going to get the other girls for Christmas?" Having never had real friends before, I all of a sudden went "oh shit, I have to get the girls presents! This must be what normal friends do." So I went rushing to my mum and begged her to take me out shopping for presents, and I even asked all of the girls what they wanted. Mum and dad ended up spending quite a bit of money on getting presents for all of the girls, and I was super relieved that I'd now be able to give everyone great presents like normal friends do. Well, a few days before the end of the school year, I bought in this giant bag of gifts for all of my friends. All of the other kids where like "who are those presents for?" when I told them it was for my friends, they all looked confused, and were like "I never give Christmas presents to my friends." I was confused as I thought that it was what everyone did. As I'm giving out the presents during lunch, one of the other girls in my friend group was like "you know, we don't usually give each other presents, normally it's just a Christmas card." When I went home and talked to mum about it, she gently explained to me that I had been taken advantage of, and that my best friend had lied to me just to get me to give her gifts. I felt so embarrassed and frustrated, as I'd never had friends before and I genuinely thought that this was what friends did for each other. We eventually cut ties after she ghosted me after we graduated high school, and looking back now I can see all of the massive red flags that I didn't see at the time because of all of her lies and gaslighting.

5:24 I had a friend's mum who was like that so I knitted her some handmade dish cloths and I'd always top up the fluids in her truck and come over to help when there was yard work or painting to do and whatnot. It meant a lot to me to have her insist on including everyone in things I would not otherwise have been able to partake in. So though I never expected it, I always did everything in my power to express my gratitude. Five years after grad i was told by a mutual friend's mum that my best mate's mum really liked me because I always said thank you, never assumed she was paying and tried to be helpful around the property. This was ten years ago and it still chokes me up because at the time, I always felt so guilty when she'd insist on paying so I was glad to find out that she knew how grateful I was, was happy to do it, and saw that I was trying my darndest to contribute in anyway I could. I still miss my mate's mum. 😔

We planned to do it as cheaply as possible, but because she comes from a rich family, her Dad decided on his own to pay for everything as a gift to both of us. I was blown away and never expected how lavishly he went with beautiful hotel rooms, excursions and first class tickets. So I made it clear that I would pay for all of our food for the 3 weeks we were there. There was no way, I would ever take that gift for granted and could never repay her father's kindness, but I in no way expected any of it and still don't. I crocheted and embroidered a soft wool/alpaca/angora beanie for a friend; we were all out in a group (pre-Easter get together) and she looked vaguely horrified when she opened her present. (I still think it was the best one I ever made). Even I, who can be oblivious sometimes, noticed. So did other people. I hurriedly explained that I'd made it myself; didn't expect her to wear it out to restaurants, just walking her dog during winter...After that, she sabotaged me with that friend group and even told me an outright lie about a future meet up to ensure I missed it. I just let them all go. We'd all known each other for years by that point; if they truly thought I was that awful, it wasn't something I needed in my life. All over a hand crafted beanie, as far as I could figure out. She just had it in for me after that. Maybe she was jealous I could make something? None of the presents exchanged were valued over $10 on that day, so I couldn't figure out her issue. She was a real snob though. Apparently it wasn't some kind of "name brand" item.

Then she started talking to his mom about us. His mom hated me at the time. After that, she had the audacity to call my mom and tell her I was unhappy when it was not true, and my mom is very sensitive felt hurt and bad for me and actually suffered because of this information. I actually got so furious when my mom told me that I called my now ex-best friend and completely cut her out of my life forever with no regrets. He never let anyone pay for anything, but he always expected them to at least offer. One time my mother snuck to the bar at the pub and paid, Dave very gently told her off, explained he liked people to offer, but also enjoyed spoiling everyone and she wasn't to do it again. This Lia chick reminds me of a former friend I was trying to help out a few years ago when her mother decided to go live with another daughter, essentially leaving my friend high and dry. I helped her pack up to move, paid for the movers, and told her I’d help her with groceries until she could get a job. A year later she still hadn’t done anything about finding a job to supplement her disability check, and it had gone from one purchase of groceries a month to two. I tried not to let it show that it was starting to irritate me. For some reason she was always dying to get me to take her to Costco, which I couldn’t understand because she had no one else living with her and she couldn’t get all the groceries she needed cuz of the bulk buys, and I refused to pay more than $200 at a time. Then that year her daughter-in-law was pregnant and the girl asked me if I would take her to Costco so she could get stocked up with easy meals for when she’d had the baby. Then I took her to Ricky’s for supper, during which I got her to reveal something she’d mentioned in front of me that I didn’t quite catch, and my friend’s panicked reaction of “Shhh!” made me want to know, so while I had the DIL with me, I asked her. Come to find out, my so-called friend had been taking orders from her neighbours to get me to buy, and she’d sell the healthy food I bought her to them at a discount. Then she’d order huge amounts of fast food with the cash, which explained why she always needed a second trip to the store every month. I was livid! But I decided I wasn’t going to be treated that way. I took the girl by her MIL’s place so she could leave a box of diapers for future use, and we got the third degree as to where I had taken her. The friend was upset that I hadn’t taken her with us, but I explained that I wasn’t doing any shopping, her DIL was. The baby arrived a week later and I took the friend to see her. The DIL wanted to run to the store for something and I offered to take her, and of course the supposed friend wanted to shop, too. I told her that I could no longer afford $400 a month, which was true, and I’d only be able to get her $100 worth every two weeks. She didn’t like that at all, but I gave her $100 anyway, which she gave $40 to the DIL for something she owed to her. I had an inkling she was going to try something, so I got my shopping done and went to find them to tell them I was going out to sit in the car. I saw her basket was full and she laughed, “There’s just so many bargains!” I didn’t say anything and went to the car. Next thing I know, the DIL is back at the car and looking for the woman’s wallet because the friend had gotten more than she could afford and wanted the DIL to come ask me for cash. The DIL said no, you’ve taken advantage of her enough, and lent her the cash. So everyone was pissed off by the time I dropped her off and I told her we wouldn’t be doing that EVER again, and next thing I know, she’s accusing me of trying to take her place with the DIL and the new baby! Needless to say, that was the end of that friendship. I tried to be a good friend and she took advantage of my niceness repeatedly. I decided I would NEVER do that again for anyone who wasn’t family. Sorry for the novel! 😂

I grew up with a lot of privilege and so many times ppl would steal from me or my family and then laugh it off because “we could afford to buy more.” This is all in spite of the fact that my parents would always pay for everything for my friends. Yes, same. It wasn't the belongings - it was the betrayal and loss of trust. Plus, some of the things I lost were irreplaceable. Someone stole my great grandmother's ring that had been passed on to me. They know who they are. I hope they enjoyed having my family heirloom. I have been not enjoying since I was 17. Now I am 50, and I haven't forgotten.

My uncle was super rich. I flew from England to New York for a shopping vacation and he came down from New Jersey to meet me in the city.
We went for a super top end meal, lots of drinks, and I insisted on paying as he had gone out of his way to come down and show me the sights (this was kinda over my budget, but I wanted to treat him for a change). As a compromise, he matched the bill, doubled it and that was the server's tip. The young lady nearly fell flat on her back. Everyone was a winner. No need to take advantage of, what is at the end of the day whether they can afford it or not, someone's good nature.

I love that the groom stood up for his bride, before they were even married. Marriage is hard, and having someone like that around would probably spell disaster for the happy couple. Lia was very manipulative and you are right: those are the kinds of stories that make people feel less generous. I wouldn't be surprised if, since college, Lia had been guilt tripping the bride by throwing in her face that she could not afford such things if she ever questioned her sincerity as a friend. I've seen people like that before and it is sad to watch. The bride had a really nice group of friends. She made the right decision when she kept them regardless of social status.

I had a friend suggest we go out to lunch. I was doing quite well at the time and had treated her/our friends a few times.
On this day, I said ‘sure, but we’ll have to split it as things are tight right now’. She replied that she couldn’t afford to go in that case and did not suggest any alternative - like lunch at one of ours.
So SHE invited ME out to lunch, so I could pay for us both.
That was the death of that friendship.

Nah, you had me at the MOH understudy thing especially. I was my sisters MOH, and she had a few other friends in the party as well. Only one was someone that we’ve literally known our entire lives, like had Christmas dinner together always until they moved a few hours away (and that was after all of us had graduated high school and gone away for college anyway). That girl would never in a million years do what this girl in the story did. I was 20/21 when my sister got married (it was a week before my birthday), so she was super helpful with planning the bachelorette festivities but none of it was taken from me, or stepped on our actual family’s toes. She was nothing but helpful, an extra set of hands, would run to get someone for pictures, popped champagne in the bridal suite (I had never done it haha), she was just HELPFUL. Not entitled at all whatsoever, just incredibly helpful and we are close as ever years later because of how kind she is. That girl from this story is not a friend. She is a leech.

Had a rich family friend. He told me if I made all A's my senior year of HS he'd buy me a car. He did...Nothing crazy, a gently used 91 Corolla (This was 1997) that I loved! At Christmas, his wife would send me huge boxes of designer perfumes, over night bags, purses and swag from her frequent shopping trips. We'd stay at their huge house sometimes and one time he picked up my grandmother from the airport in his Rolls Royce just to treat her. After I graduated from HS he took me and my family to a Michelin star restaurant and later that same day went to see the musical Cats. Sent me to Vegas in my 21st birthday - got us a suite at Caesars Palace! We had ski trips, horse back riding in the rocky mountains, white water rafting. I never took it for granted and was thankful for the experiences. But I never demanded or expected anything.
