Having a normal working relation with Immigration Dept - sure 🙂..... Thai immigration is terrified losing a lot of the "fees" they get with the new visa suggestions, making it easier to to stay longer time in Thailand in a correct way. Foreigners behaving badly is just media driven and everyone knows that.

I have no issues with it, but how can one make sure that the inspectors are genuine cops and not imposters.
A recent case made news where several guys in police uniforms turned up at a shop (I think in Phuket) and demanded payments. It turned out that these were fake cops.

Our local Immigration Office does a once a year house check for retirees on an O-Non-immigrant visa. They call in advance and take pictures and talk with our "neighbors". I think of it as a wellness check. It is not an inconvenience for me.

The arrival immigration line has been empty for months. Not about low season. 2 years ago, the immigration arrivals was super long. It's been emptier & emptier. Additionally, starting this month (May), tourists need to be careful coming into Thailand (via BKK airport) too many times, even on visa exemption. Immigration counter officers are taking people aside for "interview" on the assumption/accusation that "tourists" are working in Thailand. While doing that, the officer is holding onto your passport & raising his voice at you in Thai after he asks if you know Thai & you say "No". There are even seats prepared at the side with a few understandably unhappy-looking travellers with kids.

Sounds great, not! On the year that I turned 50 and finally can make the move to retire in Thailand I keep getting this constant moving around of the "Rules" which makes it more "scrutinized" which really means a pain to deal with .1st the tax situation, now visa "crackdown". At some point it seems too much, for someone that has not participated in creating any of these problems.

I have been visited here at my home once a year since arriving. So perhaps it was a trial program to see what could be flushed out? I don't travel anymore and do my 90-dar reports online so maybe that anomaly raised a flag with them?

Although foreigners bring great benefit to the Thai people, tourist activities do occasionally upset the apple cart.
Unlike the Philippines, where foreigners are welcome, and there are very few immigration restrictions, Thailand has excessive restrictions.
YES, it is their country, but the Government could be more welcoming to retirees who bring millions of Baht into the Thai economy.
IMHO the Thai Government has been leery of foreign interference since 1688, the days of Constantine Falcon and the Siamese Revolution.
