Get a real treat watching your videos. There are so many others carvers out there but you are the only who takes the time to share your thoughts as to why you are doing certain cuts. Have been carving along with you for a while its like being home with a freind.
Doug, love your videos. I'm recovering from some medical stuff that had me too fatigued to carve for the last several months. This project is perfect for me to retrain and strengthen hands and wrists. Getting back means a lot to me and my wife. She teared up when she saw I am back in the game. Many thanks!
Hi scott McElroy, I am just starting out with wood carving. Back in August I had C-spine surgery, which had me down for 3 months. Only to break my ankel on DECEMBER 1st. needing to have surgery one week later. So now I am back down and cant walk for 6-12 weeks, due to the type of injury I recieved. now I am trying to stay positive, so I picked up my carving knife that I bought several years ago but did nothing with. So far I have learned how to strop my knife and I have carved Dougs new Owl and the pocket penguin. Due to my neck muscels needing more time to recover I can only carve for a short time, with the exception of my faith in Jesus, wood carving is the only thing keeping me going right now. I really needed to see your post this morning. I am wiping back my tears as I write this. Thank you Scott. My new montra, " Life sucke? Trust Jesus, start wood carving". I hope you Get better soon, I will be prqying for you. Brian
I took your pocket penguin and put a little spin of my own on him and added a hat. Maybe I was thinking of Chilly Willy. The antique look is great. I have one now with a hat and one plain. Thanks again!

Thank you for being you , your easy on the ears. I started carving when my brother ended up in a coma, ultimately he passed away, but it helped to ease the pain of my loss, and he would be proud to see the accomplishment I've made thanks to your tutorials .

Enjoy your videos. What I especially like is how you leave it so the viewer can take what you provided and still make it their own. For the "Pocket Penguin", I also made a snowboard and posed him both with the board, and going down the slopes. You truly make it fun! Thanks
Hi Doug, I just finished carving my 6th pocket penguin. I didn't think he was going to make it, so I had to revive him with a little 320 sand paper. I know, its tragic but He is doing much better now. I will be naming him "Smooth Mike" : ) I will be painting him later today. I also started roughing out the simple, fast and easy Owl this morning. Thank you so much for putting on all these Tutorials, woodcarving and your videos have changed my life for the better. Thank you.

You were talking about people asking about wood and knives. Some bass wood us softer and some knives are sharper. In one of your older videos you said you were a carpenter, which is a hands on hard work occupation. Your hands are young and strong enough to make carving stone look easy. The way you teach makes things easy to follow and you choose easy things to carve. Keep up the good work.

I’ll be coming back to watch this, not watching it now, just wanted to let ya know on an easier to see video, you’re a great teacher, especially as a learner. Though I’ve been learning and doing other little projects and stuff I oddly like watching your videos on anything, while I whittle something absolutely un connected. Explaining the cut you’re making has slowly made me memorize certain habits that I prefer. The way you display and show your work/working is amazing when it comes to getting “click” moment. Love your videos, and dad humor.

I always thought watching Gene Messer carve was relaxing but after finding your videos, that has changed. I like your style and presentation. I am 80 years young and just finally getting back to carving. I think I've forgotten everything I once knew, which wasn't all that much, but after watching your vids, I'm ready to take up the knife once again. Thanks for you easy going approach to showing us the joys of wood carving and how accessible it can be to anyone. You introduced the “V” tool in this carving, which next to the knife is one of the most useful tools when working on small carvings. It would be greatly appreciated if you could talk about the “V” tool in more detail in an upcoming video. I would be very interested to hearing your perspective as to what sizes and angle degrees you reach for most often when doing your small carvings. Your videos are greatly appreciated and you have taught me much with it comes to the joys of wood carving. It is a very relaxing hobby that does not take much space or investment in tools to enjoy! Fun, and much appreciated, as always. Have been following your carving and tutorials from the beginning (Sycamore Sam). I do always learn something and I do thank you for the kind way you share your talents. I also respect the fact that you want to stay in your "happy place." So, please accept this as a request if it generates any interest for you. I would love to see some tutorials that are a bit more advanced. In other words, some basswood caricatures that reflect the level of carving you have mastered. Some of us who have followed you for years would like to continue the journey by attempting some next steps. Whatever you decide, thanks for the excellent tutorials.
I won’t get to see my twin grandson’s for Christmas this year. They are 3 and honestly we haven’t seen them any Christmas yet. Anyhow, they have a fascination with Penguins so I’m going to make a couple of these, painted just ever so different, as they are and send them for a Christmas present from Gramma. A sharp blade on carving tool is most important. I made a bear, following your instructions, out of very dry piece of Juniper wood. The V cuts and detail work was difficult. Learned a lot on my first attempt. Going to try this penguin next. Thanks for your videos.
Thank you so much Doug for all of your you tube video's. This one is another keeper. You got me hooked on this whittling thing and I am addicted to it. Only doing it for the last 8 or 9 months. used to draw a lot. I was a Photographer for almost 60 years. Always loved working with wood. I watch you mostly , Gene Messer , Sharon my art, and a few others. Along with your camping vids. I carve and my wife of 50 years , Paints em for me. Quite the team. Thanks again.

Watching your videos feels like hanging out with the uncle I never had
I have looked with envy at how easy Doug carves his basswood and he doesn't like to talk about the moisture content.
I struggled with mine (which had a moisture content of 10%), so I decided to try an experiment. I put a block on the radiator for 2 weeks and moisture content dropped to zero. It cuts without much effort!
So, getting it as dry as possible will help!
That is opposite to everything i have ever said - better to store beside a wet rag to keep some moisture in

I figure the best wood for carving is the wood I have to carve. Some are easier, for sure, but the advice to just give it a try and see what happens is great!

Mr.Linker, Im a long time fan but always sucked at figurines. I stuck with spoons for years. But today, ive followed this video to a t. And i am happy to say i have successfully made an owl. Lol i dont know how, but my penguin turned into an owl 😂.
As Bob Ross said " theres no mistakes only happy little accidents." Im currently painting it. And i am glad i tried figurine carving again.

Penguins have a longish narrow beak that is hooked on the end and have a little tail the shape of your beak they have three toes on each foot appart from that i alwways enjoy your videos over the last3\4 years i have been following you .

Hey Doug, Just wanted to Giday , work and love your carving, I ve learne a lot from you and Arlene, and Kevin. Not many carvers here. Carving's not appreciated as a craft and artistry. We live in Longford Tasmania, The Island state off the southern tip of australia. This week the temperature is -3c with wind chill factor of -7c*. Snow down to 200meters. Good carving weather.
