Move about 6 inches to your left and you have a halo
I saw that. In fact I Screen shot it. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Oh hey Doug does have a halo 😊
+
Hello Doug I recently started wood carving, about 2 weeks ago actually and so I am a real beginner. But anyway I was watching RUclips and came across a video of you carving and was inspired by you, not for just your carving but your kind and sharing personality. I feel like I am a little late in the game at 62 years old lol! And due to diabetes I struggle to see and have to wear 2 pairs of glasses carve but I am doing it because I continue to watch your videos. Oh and by the way I do wear gloves and tape up my fingers lol!
Would one of those desk clamped ring lights with a magnifying centre help? Dunno what they are officially called. Happy creating
I love the round light above your head for a few seconds there you look just like a saint 😂
I totally appreciate all your videos. They are pleasure to watch him from time to time. I actually get a sit down and do a little carving. !
Best idea ever. I must say I have never seen so many fun carving projects. I love this blade cover project. Dont forget, Vegetable tan leather is much kinder to steel than other types of leather tanning. I think I'm on one of these tomorrow. Thanks Doug. It's always a pleasure watching your videos.
I'm going to make a few of these for sure.
For anyone doing this cut on the bandsaw; make sure to use a clamp or a jig so you keep your fingers a safe distance away from the blade. Doug made a video of a super simple jig made out of a 2x4 with 45 degree angles cut into it. I still use mine all the time.
Love it Doug, everyone has scraps and now they have a purpose. Keeps your tools guarded and safe during storage. Great idea, thanks for sharing.
Awesome project and video Doug, thank you for walkin us through it, fun times ahead for sure. Thank you again my friend for all you do for us.
Another great video Doug ..your 1 x 1 projects are not only fun ..but useful ..Thank you for sharing your talent with us
Great idea that I've never seen before - and practical too!
Doug, have you ever thought about carving a Chess set using your little figures?
It is just a thought, hillbillies vs gnomes , lumberjacks vs fishermen, ect.
Well I did have some custom knife covers that I made from bison leather. Now I have to do these. Damnit 😉
Great idea!
Brilliant!!
Really enjoying you videos! Looking to start as a beginner.
Thanks for the carving instruction.
Now I know what to do with the littles I’ve been making! Thank you!
Really fun idea Doug. I recently retired from 47 years in foodservice. This has me thinking about doing a knife block like chefs use but making it a series of Chefs heads with the knives slotting into the top of the poofy chef hats ( known as a Toque for the purists). If I figure it out and retain all my digits I will send you a pick. Thanks as always you are a great inspiration and awesome mentor.
I'm a chef too, and what a cool idea that I might have to steal! 😁
@Eric Furubotten Go for it Chef. It just seemed like a natural progression. Best of Luck!
And hopefully they won’t rust ! Be sure that your wood and atmosphere is dry.
@Stephen Whittier Stefanie the knives I use are high dollar stainless and porcelain so they should not rust, but your comment is right on point regarding most household knives.
Thanks for looking out!
oh boy! Back in the ‘70’s I worked a Summer job at Meat Packers and Supply in downtown Los Angeles. The company sold high end knives to Chef’s and Butchers alike. I recall one knife that went for around $900 and they had difficulty keeping it in stock…They only sold German, Swiss and Japanese knives. I shudder to think what a high end Chef’s knife would run these days.
Spooky ... I made myself a knife today. Thank you, Doug. 🙂
Doug, These are great. I need a way to keep my knives safe but available. Thanks for the instruction and motivation. Keep up the great work.
Great idea!
What's not to love Doug! Everything is magic you put your hands on. Thanks Doug
Love the creativity you bring to woodcarving. 😂
I already have a subscription that issue is on my desk, haven't read it yet but great accomplishment Doug, you've earned it 👏
Great idea, I’m gonna carve a cover that turns my knife into a spork.
A boss move!
Imagine my surprise Doug when I saw your face plastered in my copy of WCI. Too cool, great magazine and fantastic teacher partners!
I like your halo.😂
Great project, ideal gifts too thought
😃.Had a Random thought It you had a drill bit the right size, these could be pen/ pencil toppers too.
Better than my plastic tube I use. Fun idea
I know others have said this in the past, but you should make a book. You are the best woodcarving RUclipsr out there!!!🎉🎉🎉
You are an inspiration
Thanks Doug, another clever one!!
Yay! I was just thinking about making a cover for a few of my knives..your timing is perfect! Thank you Doug!
These are so cool Doug and extremely adorable! I think I prefer the 2 sides glued together then carve method. Like the leather insert idea...very clever! 😊
Great video !!!
I love this angel. The light behind you makes it look like you have a cocked halo.
First! Been wanting to do this too, can’t wait to try it
Was it as good for you as it was for us?
Good idea. I will do this one. I will keep it flat on the opposite side of where stick the knife in. This way I can have it standing up on the desk. Rgrds Olle
Thanks buddy. You just solved a Problem. Love it.
I'm Gonna be busy for a couple of days. 👍😎👍
This reminds me of the Pancake Man Hal Smith Pencil Eraser from IHOP .
Great idea, I would have never thought of doing this on my own, this is why I like youtube...
Looks like a lot of fun. Thanks, Doug!
I've been making custom carving knife covers from "fancy" wood, but never thought about carving one. Rather than using leather to hold the blade in the cover, I install a small magnet. Like your design, think I'll incorporate your idea with mine and see what develops.
This was great. I made a covering for a spoon knife in a similar fashion. Thanks
5 star video. In addition to woodcarving, one of my other hobbies is leather crafting. It is important to use only vegetable tanned leather as other types of tanning ie. chrome tanned leather will react with the steel in your blade over time and ruin it. Vegetable tanned leather is the same kind of leather used by knife sheath makers and gun holster makers. Also, leather thickness is referred to in ounces where 1oz. equals 1/64 inches. So 2mm is probably close to 2 oz. thickness. I hope this helps your viewers. Thanks for the great video. Now I have to go make some covers for my knives.
My bad. We're talking 3-4 oz. or 4-5 oz. thickness of leather.
You could also mark the type of knife on the outside of the piece to.
This is something I definitely need.
Хороший вариант я буду так же делать.
Love your crooked halo Doug 😜💕
That's a good one! Thanks for another great video Doug!
Love covers
Doug your halo is askew!!!
Thanks for the great idea, I've made two so far. The Raccoon and the Beaver.
And here I was with a worn out birch sheath looking to get something new. Of course Doug comes through. Gotta make a Moai one of these for my knife. 😂
Another awesome idea and video Doug. Just plain fun and easy carvings.🙂
Thanks Doug, love it, love it, love it.
What an amazing idea !
I love it !!
now….I just wish I could carve like you ty for sharing !
Appreciate your help and knowledge Doug. Salute
Lovely little project.
Leathers which were chrome-tanned will not attack the metal in blades. Leather which was acid-tanned, like most tooling-leathers can be very corrosive. Learned that the hard way....
Very nice job Doug. God bless.
Wow, this is such a fun idea and practical way to keep the blade safe from causing damage when not in use. Thanks so much for the video.
It's like a Pucco Sheath!
I bought a flexcut knife, it will be here tomorrow I know the knife doesn't make the carver, but the knife I am using now was okay to try out wood carving so now it is time for an up grade. Thanks for all the videos they are so inspiring.
This looks like a really fun project!
Thanks Doug. 😁👍😁👍
Summer dog day fun under the shade tree.
Blade cover is on point. 👍
Loving the hallo saint Doug lol
I am so making one of these. Thanks Doug.
Hey Doug that is such a great idea, great video thanks! 👍👍👍🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯
You’re looking rather angelic
Excellent idea using the leather insert and could use quite hard wood as well, if not trying to do fancy carving.
I like the halo Doug.🤣
Got my subscription today for the magazine! Also used the code. Can’t wait!
I love his crooked halo lol
These are so awesome! I can hardly wait to see how mine turn out!! Kinda excited to see the contest entires & winners!
Thank you for awesome video take care and have a great weekend.
Enjoyed watching Doug
you NEVER disappoint! Really love this idea vs just using a wine cork. Thanks for all the wonderful ideas and the new shop is looking great!
Thanks Doug that’s a cool project, great idea.
Yes Doug!!! Thank you so much for this. I heard you mention on the live stream and was gonna reach out to ask when this was coming out. Thanks thanks thanks!
I have been looking for something like this. Thank you, Thank you Thank you.Awesome, Like you have read my mind. This is perfect.
Thanks Doug. You’re constantly coming up with great ideas. Really enjoy you videos.
Just found my new woodcutting project😁
What a cool idea Doug I love it so I’m going to make some of these guys.
Love this xx
Very cool Doug, on the to do list!
Question, what would happen if you add some stropping compound to the leather as an automatic strop function? Would that work?
Wicked idea Doug ! love it man
What a great idea!
Brilliant ! , tnx Doug.
Neat idea with the leather. I made without in past. Better with leather. Thanks.
Awesome idea!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🪓🔪👍👍
A great idea.
Your videos are great! Any chance you'll do a how to for the trick-or-treat ghost with a candy bag in a smaller size?
Very creative, smart idea.
Cool I like this a lot! Thanks and take care
Thanks Doug
Been waiting for this one! Thanks! I tried a few years ago, on my own and I was making it way too complicated. I know what I'm doing tonight! Probably start with a plain one, and then I'll try a character. It will be nice to be able to properly protect my blades when I go camping.
don't you just hate it when those big "RUclipsrs" get sponsors that have nothing to do with their content!?!?😉😄
Fun little project, Doug! That 1-by-1 series is fun too!
Any tips on how to slice them in half without a bandsaw?
Maybe try a Japanese saw. It cuts on the pull stroke rather than the push stroke of Western saws. Also, the blade makes a much finer kerf.
sweet!
