I saw a man who did covered bridges in spools. Thanks for this video
My mother sews a lot quilts. I carved Christmas related spools and used twine to put them together and made a tree garland. She loved it
That is sooooo clever. Excellent work again Doug
I have a lot of spools so I’m going to give it a try.
Those are beautiful little carvings.
I would love to see a shop tour and advice on setting up a area
Doug, thanks for this. Don't know how many times I've watched this video. As a youngster, I used to collect cotton reels. My dad asked why, and I didn't know. Now decades later, I have an answer, just not the spools, lol.
How CUTE is that!!!
Another goodun! Thanks, have a great weekend.
LOL these are wonderful. Great idea. Thanks for sharing 😂 🏴
Praise be to Doug Linker. Thank you Mr. Linker for all you do to tutor your tutees!
🌟Some of those old wooden spools are worth hundreds of dollars to certain collectors! The added face brings me GREAT JOY! DOUG!
Doug, just wanted to thank you for all of your projects that a lot of us enjoy. The effort that you put into all of your videos is just outstanding. I’ve watched a lot of other carving vids and you my friend are my favorite! Thank you for all of your time very professional done a natural born teacher. 🙏💯👍🇺🇸❤️
Fantastic. Absolutely love these. Have subscribed to wood carving illustrated. It may take to get to me in Western Australia. ❤❤
Hey Doug we are missing your videos. We need a new one. God bless.
Great idea Doug!
That is soooooooooo coooooooooooool!!! I have a handful of them that were my great-grandmother's. All different sizes from the 40's,50's, and early 60's. Can't wait to see what you will teach us next! Enjoyed as always and take care!
Love it, you are the man Doug. Thanks for the joy you bring.
Thanks Doug 👍. Good clean fun!@
Those are really lovely doug. If i get some, I'll give it a shot
I mean, it just gets whackier by the week - whacky but fantastic! I can't imagine how many of those little reels my grandmother chucked out over the years, probably would have been enough to make a damn good number of carvings, if I'd had the notion to think of it way back then. As kids, we made elastic band propelled 'tanks' from them - little did we know what we were missing...!
Ma Dad really loves your videos and he admires your skill, it's wonderful! He is also interested - what paint do you use to color your works? Thank you for everything!
This was awesome! I recently found spools that belonged to my great-grandmother. I LOVE the Santa 🎅
I like the spool holder. Since those spools are pretty hard wood, it is easier to slip when pushing harder on the knife, and we all know...that's when we head for the Band-Aids. The holder keeps our holding hand out of the way. Love your content. Long time watcher. Thanks for sharing, Doug!
knew it was a good idea to save the old spools of yarn.😊😂 thank you for a wonderful video.... take care 😘
Love these spool carvings! It was also neat how you could carve through to the center on some of those.
I've got a massive pile of these from a local goodwill (I think I've got 30 ish) ... but I'm really new to whittling. I'm looking forward to being confident enough to have a go at these
Great video Doug. Thanks for sharing! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family too, because it is close.
Thx but it’s long past here -Canada is much earlier Thanksgiving
Thank you Doug. I'll have to source some of these and make a snowperson head.
my wife has 20 or more of these old spools on her craft closet. Think I'll snatch a few a d hive it try .... grrat idea .. thanks
Hey Doug I wouldn’t believe it if I didn’t see you do it, awesome thanks! 👍👍👍🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯
Those spools are so good…they would make great xmas ornaments.
Another great carve. Thank you Doug. Learning so much from your vids.
Doug, you're the best, take care man.
Those have got to hard as rock to carve!!😂
HA!!! LOL! You never fail to amuse 😂😂😂 I really enjoy watching all your videos and even attempt the carving. Kitties love to knock gnomes down off their shelf and chase them around the room, teeheehee
Dude you rock that beard, but I think your shaved look is most handsome. None the less, as usual, your talent and imagination is awesome. I just enjoy all your videos.
Now I just have to find some old spools ! Awesome stuff Doug
Absolutely brilliant video. I just can't stop watching and trying my best at creating some of the things you do.
Enjoyed this and it was really nice you showed how you handled an oops.
I am lousy at carving small, but still enjoyed this video. I really like the Santa you showed in your collection of carved spools. My wife has some really large spools that could be a totem pole idea for you to carve. Thanks for another great video.
Could you make a tutorial carving a miniature fox 🙏🏼
Cute pumpkin, nice work. Idea- share the thread with the birds, for nest building
Super, Greetings from Poland , Michael
I've carved several of these over the years. Have you ever carved old wooden rolling pins? They are very hard wood as well, but lots of fun. Loved your video! Great! Thank you for sharing.
I love your work and the spoons bring back good memories
Thanks for sharing this.!! Now I’m excited.. gots to see if I can find me some of those old spools..👍🏻
I've got a whole box of those wooden spools!! I've been saving to carve. I thought that there was something about carving them in an issue of a Woodcarving Illustrated magazine. Also, I've some old wooden rolling pins. I wondered if the wood would be too hard to carve. I enjoy watching you carve. Your voice is so soothing.
Just having them to look at on a shelf would be great.
Too cool Doug"
Those are just too cute!
So cool and a good idea!!!!
iv got some of those old spools from my moms sewing kit!
Love this idea, there is something fascinating out of making something from something else. Thanks Doug.
we used to make spool tractors from these . carve notches round the two rims put an elastic band through the middle with a short match stick on one side that sat in another carved notch and a long match stick (twice the length of spool end) on the other side that was left smooth. twist up the band with the long stick put on floor and watch them go.
That’s right! I remember something along those lines too
i was thinking you could carve an animal or person around the spool tractor so they look like they are jumping or rolling, a cat comes to mind.@@dougLinker
Thanks in advance! ;-)
Thanks Roger!! Appreciate it very much 👊
Love this!!!💖
Great Idea Doug! Thank you😊
Fun video Doug.
Awesome job, very interesting to,watch you do that. Thank you.
Greatly appreciate ya Doug! Always watching and learning from your work. 🫡
So cool! Cool spools. Lol.
❤❤❤
Nice idea, definitely want to make some and place it secretly on the sewing machine from my girlfriend!
Awesome idea! eBay will be “sold out” of wooden spools very soon!
how do you make the holder?
Hello what brand of paint do you use I’m just getting started and want to buy some paints thanks
Will spraying with alcohol and water make it easier to carve
Some will say so but i can’t tell that it does very much
🧵🧵🧵🧵🧵🧵👍🏻💪thanks very kool
Hi Doug,
I really enjoy your carving videos. Thank you for creating and sharing them.
Since I began watching, and when we’re out shopping, I look for ideas for carving. I would like to send pictures of these to you to share with everyone. Is there an email address that I can send pictures to?
Thank you.
Question…. If you soak them in water to rehydrate a little make it any easier?
You could spray them with 50/50 water and rubbing alcohol. I'm not sure I would soak them in water.
@@phyllisstone3089 thank you!
I like to use spools with the original paper labels. Adds to the authenticity. Soaking them will loosen the labels, maybe even ruin them. I’ve never had to soften the wood. Some spools may just be too hard to carve. Toss and get another one. 😊
@@DaleKirkpatrick-dw4re thank you!
Thanks! - these videos are so great - you must have gotten hit with the genius stick ! Have a cup on me , all the best, Josh
Thanks Josh!!
Do you still have a match site? With hoodies and things of that nature?
No but may do something again soon if their is a demand
Does he have a shop?
👏👏👏👍👍❤️❤️❤️
you switched to a smaller washer.. :)
😁👍🏼
Have you moved to diamond stones for sharpening yet?
Nope
Hhhmmm now to find some wooden spools!!
💚🇬🇧🌱👍👍👍
Do you sell your carving?
Have you ever sold your carvings?
Not at this point no -maybe someday
Oh man, I just threw out probably two dozen of these spools
😢
I am going to try to carve spools. There are 18 on buysell for $20. I don't know if that is a good price or not.
I am new to carving and not very artistic. I managed to do your basic owl.
I haven't learned a lot about sharpening and haven't practiced enough.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Just checked and all my spools are plastic...... But I can maybe get some wooden ones from the charity shop.
Yard sales and thrift shops are pretty good places to look for them. Estate sales of elderly relatives is also a great place to look.
@@phyllisstone3089 thank you! I'll keep my eyes open.
