Doug, thanks for making this video. I brought my whittling knife on vacation with me. I made mine whilst sitting at the ocean. I gave it away to an older gentleman that was just sitting, watching me whittle.
This will take a minute but I want to thank you. I haven't watched one of your vids in a while because my music channel took off and I have been spending all of my waking hours working on it and have not had time to carve in a while. And then about two and a half years ago, silly me decided to do a live stream sing along show not realizing the enormous amount of time it would take one person to produce a show, but do it we did. Though I love music and making video, I had reached burn out a few months back. Today I saw this vid in my suggestions and watched. I had forgotten how much I had learned to love carving, largely because of you, Mary May, and Paul Sellers. I started when I watched Paul sharpen a chisel and carve a spoon. One day while waiting for some glue to dry, I had an old dull 3/4" chisel that I knew I couldn't make much worse so I tried sharpening it. It worked! I got it so sharp I could just push it thru the wood. Had a piece of scrap laying around and began to carve a spoon. I loved it! Then Mary May. I learned from her about relief carving never thinking I could learn to carve in 3d, I just loving carving the wood. But then I found you. I think you carved a simple wood spirit if I remember correctly and you made us aware that there was a technique to it. I ordered the OCC model knife that you are using in this video at your recommendation on one of your other vids and that has become my favorite knife. It has never been on a stone, just a strop and it is incredible. So now that I mostly do reruns on my show I'm having some time to get back to carving. Thank you so much for your influence and friendly presentations that are so pleasant to watch and always with helpful tips and tricks so to speak. My first love will of course always be music, but I do love me some carving now and then thanks to you, Mary and Paul!! It's a great stress reliever.
Thanks Doug just started watching your videos again and have a cheap carving set and plenty of dowel so will knock out a few lighthouses. Love your channel and a big thanks from Cornwall in the uk.
I've been a whittler for alotta yrs. I got into it because of my granddad, who exclusively used a pocket knife, and carved on sticks, branches and even scrap lumber. I've done the same. Only until 10 yrs ago, did I even know about fix bladed/handled whittling knives and basswood. You've given me alotta ideas and ways to make my whittles much more detailed than just simple whittles. I've even given the fixed bladed knives and basswood a try. I'll be honest, I didn't much care for those knives much. Maybe it's because I've always just used a pocket knife. Basswood is excellent carving wood, but really love carving on inexpensive and easily available poplar dowels. Carves just fine. Still enjoy collecting brush trimmings to whittle on as well. I haven't thought of lighthouses before, but I'm gonna give these a go myself. Thanks Doug for another simple project.
!man I know I'm alittle late to comment but I Really Hope You get this.... THANK YOU...I broke my back 5 yrs ago now I'm walking still not in the woods like should be in till I can be in the woods by myself again but my grandfather taught to be a man and taught me to whittle gave my first knife at 5 yrs old your projects and tips kept me from alot of anxiety attacks. Being a woodsman and a bushcrafter just thank you
Those are so cute! I would love to see you make the lighthouse out of bark. The one you showed... My curiosity intensified! Thanks for sharing with us.
I absolutely love your projects Doug! The tiny ones that are straightforward and easy for us beginners are some of my most favorites…they help me build confidence and your soothing, calm voice encourages me to keep moving forward even if I make a mistake. Thank you for sharing your skills and talent!
Love it. I have carved everything you have done a video on. Thank you! Your five minute wizard is very popular, Iv carved hundreds, glue a magnet on them and leave them all around town when I walk, light poles, bus stops etc. I will carve a bunch of these light houses. Thanks again🙏
Good little project. Just goes to show you, everything doesnt have to take a long time or require a ton of tools. Basic carving. Good skill builders. Thanks. Hope u had a great Canada Day. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Doug I has to try it I by a broom handle wood us softer easy to carve than dowel and cheaper sink plunger handles work well too bur yes idle hands are devil's playground lol very cute dog too god bless you 🇺🇲👍🐾🦊🇮🇹
Man Doug!! Where was that whittle 4 months ago when I was trying to relearn to carve after a long period without the ability?! I needed this exact thing at this point in my life. Thank you so much 🙏🏼. God Bless. Trent
Thanks for the video. New carver. Working on my 2nd lighthouse. First one turned out good. Even painted it. Wish I could show you. Been following you for a while. Thanks.
Hey Doug, thanks for the videos - really cool. Very new Whittler here 👍 Had a go at the lighthouse with the dowel and I made something I’m very pleased with for a first go. I was using a Rough Rider Whittler, nice knife ! However, since then I’ve bought a Flexcut knife - what a game changer ! It slices through the dowel (and basswood) like a butter knife. I get the feeling it will make the learning experience much more enjoyable. Since watching my dad change electric plugs with a kitchen knife, and struggling :), I always said I would use the right tool for the job. The Flexcut seems to be that proof. Look forward to more videos, Doug 👍
I like it too! Nice. They remind me of 3 carolers standing together getting ready to sing, they just need their faces cut in. 😁😲 Lovely relaxing video. Thanks. Peace and good fortune and good health to you and your family. 😃
If you're like me and haven't had a knife in your hand for awhile then this is a great way to get back at it. Thanks Doug. PS. Poplar works great, fir not so hot.
Anyone looking to start at carving listen to this man and wear a glove lol just cut from the bottom of my pointer and up through the nail coving the wall in red haha have fun be safe it hurts
I've been away from carving for over a year but long to come back to it and your videos are helping me get back to it. I love watching your tutorials and listening to how you guide us along and offer humor as well! I also greatly appreciate the entry-level projects you offer for those of us who are not yet seasoned. This project is especially of interest to me, as I plan to carve a lighthouse for a friend of mine whose mom just passed away unexpectedly last week, and her parents loved lighthouses. Thank you for sharing your talent with us and for providing us with such a variety of awesome projects to try!
Gracias Sr Doug. Es increíble su forma de tallar. Lo hace ver simple y no es necesario saber ingles para aprender. La habilidad de sus manos es suficiente.
Love what you do Doug! Carving in your style is so easy and relaxing. My favorite project has probably been your pocket penguins, I’ve carved quite a few and they make great gifts! Could you maybe do a tutorial for a cow? Cows are my favorite animals :) thank you for the content you create, keep up the great work!
Fun project Doug, love the birds in the background. I always smile when you say don’t ask me about a chess set. I forgot to ask, what kind of ducks you had, that you walked to the creek everyday? Thanks for always sharing your ideas. 👍🏼
I have a hand carved chess set already. It was given to me by my Grand Pa Chatty. It dates back to the 1800's. Maybe I'll copy it? All your videos are GREAT! Love watching them.
These are great Doug, I am having problems carving as I'm starting to get arthritis in my hands, especially my thumbs but I'm not giving up, I love whittling. Liking your beard a bit shorter as well BTW. Thank you again for sharing
Doug I could easily see this being your next “easy owl” tutorial. Very approachable for beginners and can help teach consistency and symmetry with stop cuts and slicing cuts. I’ve made a few similar looking lighthouses in the past and one thing I’ve been wanting to try is embedding a light and carving through the “glass” (think vertical supports around a void like a ball in a cage). Great video sir
nice one Pard - simple yet fun --- ps i did a chess set using woodland characters - labor intensive but the lil fella it was given to loved it - plays chess with is Papa - take care
Hi Doug, again 1000 thanks for the quality of your work. As a chess-addicted i was planning to carve my own pieces, but i really have no idea how to do it. I'm not pushing for this, but it would be fantastic if you could publish, say, one video for each different type of piece. Greetings from italy!!!!!
Doug, thanks for making this video. I brought my whittling knife on vacation with me. I made mine whilst sitting at the ocean. I gave it away to an older gentleman that was just sitting, watching me whittle.
Same Doug thanks for making this video I am making a wood carving playlist but its not public

I very much admire your big bark carving and appreciate the video on the lighthouse, which looks fun to do.
Really enjoyed this one Doug. It wwas relaxing and fun. So hooked on this carving. Been watching Gene Messer as well. He speaks highly of you.
So doable! Love it... but that bark carving, wowza! Bet that took a bit more than 20 minutes.
Love your videos. Thanks, Doug!
