Stuff I (probably) stole from Wikipedia:
Superman (also known as Superman: The Movie) is a 1978 superhero film directed by Richard Donner and written by Mario Puzo, David Newman, Leslie Newman, and Robert Benton from a story by Puzo based on the DC Comics character of the same name. It is the first installment in the Superman film series. An international co-production between the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Panama and the United States,[3] the film stars an ensemble cast featuring Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Christopher Reeve, Jeff East, Margot Kidder, Glenn Ford, Phyllis Thaxter, Jackie Cooper, Trevor Howard, Marc McClure, Terence Stamp, Valerie Perrine, Ned Beatty, Jack O'Halloran, Maria Schell, and Sarah Douglas. It depicts the origin of Superman (Reeve), including his infancy as Kal-El of Krypton, son of Jor-El (Brando) and his youthful years in the rural town of Smallville. Disguised as reporter Clark Kent, he adopts a mild-mannered disposition in Metropolis and develops a romance with Lois Lane (Kidder), while battling the villainous Lex Luthor (Hackman).
Man of Steel is a 2013 superhero film based on the DC Comics character Superman. Produced by DC Entertainment, Legendary Pictures, Syncopy and Cruel and Unusual Films, and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is a British-American production[2] and the first installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).[5][6] The film is directed by Zack Snyder, written by David S. Goyer, and stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni and Russell Crowe. Man of Steel is a reboot of the Superman film series that portrays the character's origin story. In the film, Clark Kent learns that he is a superpowered alien from the planet Krypton. He assumes the role of mankind's protector as Superman, making the choice to face General Zod and prevent him from destroying humanity.
Development began in 2008 when Warner Bros. took pitches from comic book writers, screenwriters, and directors, opting to reboot the franchise. In 2009, a court ruling resulted in Jerry Siegel's family recapturing the rights to Superman's origins and Siegel's copyright. The decision stated that Warner Bros. did not owe the families additional royalties from previous films, but if they did not begin production on a Superman film by 2011, then the Shuster and Siegel estates would be able to sue for lost revenue on an unproduced film. Producer Christopher Nolan pitched Goyer's idea after story discussion on The Dark Knight Rises, and Snyder was hired as the film's director in October 2010. Principal photography began in August 2011 in West Chicago, Illinois, before moving to Vancouver and Plano, Illinois.
Man of Steel was released in theaters on June 14, 2013, in 2D, 3D and IMAX. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film became a box office success, grossing more than $668 million worldwide. Critics praised the film's visuals and Hans Zimmer's score but criticized its pacing and lack of character development. A follow-up entitled Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was released on March 25, 2016.

Not to mention 9 months of diet, gimm and acting against the green screen as oposed to a coactor. I also needed to see it a few times to fully understand it, as well as BvS and the Snyders cut. Zack Snyder and Richard Donner both made the same decision: to *not* just do things the way they'd always been done. They both elevated the superhero genre, in spite of overwhelming studio interference. Tim Burton made a similar decision with Batman and was similarly muscled out by WB. One day, hopefully soon, executives at movie studios will realize that their place is in an office, not the arts, and movies will be allowed to evolve rather than just repeat themselves over and over.

Disagree on the Superman 78 discussion on themes: it’s about Superman recognizing that he is not a god but also cannot live as a human (as shown in Superman 2). It’s actually a very sad story about a man destined to be alone, but who never gives up on humanity.

Man of Steel is criminally misunderstood. The themes are very deep, poses a lot of methodical questions, and really gets into the heavy emotional and mental toll Superman has on Clark Kent. Here it is in a nutshell for me. There is a line that Superman (Christopher Reeve) says to Lois Lane after he has saves her life for the first time. She asks him "who are you?" He responds "a friend". He gives the line with no guile whatsoever. He is a demigod and yet, he just wants to help.
We don't hear Henry Cavill's Superman speak with that kind of clarity of purpose at all. I get why, he was writing that way, but you can see the way Zach Snyder sees Superman and all superheroes when Lex Luthor says it about God "if God is all powerful then he cannot be good" and the opposite being true in that premise. Batman is equally world weary and is basically cynical.

Disagree. Superman was not brutal in Man of Steel. He was fighting against his own race who were equally as strong as he was. The level of brutality needs to be that high to be realistic enough. In real world that’s what happen if 2 Gods have a fight on Earth. Superman killing Zod is the most tortured decision to him but he makes that ultimate sacrifice to protect people on Earth.

One scene in particular in both films highlights the success of one film over the other. It is the death of Jonathan Kent. In Superman it is his own failing health that is Jonathan Kent's downfall. Clark even bemoans that despite all his amazing powers he could not save the man who had raised him. In Man of Steel it is later shown that Clark can move so fast as to be unseen by human eyes, just the effects of his actions which are likened to and realised as a great wind, like a typhoon one might say. So it wouldn't be a great stretch for him to rush out, unseen, and move his father to safety. He CAN save his father with his amazing powers, but his father straight up orders him to stay back. This feels like a betrayal from a character otherwise keyed up to support his son to be the best human he can alongside his powers and the establishing bedrock theme of his moral identity, that he should not use his powers to succeed humanity but to support them.

    • @zhengyingli
      @zhengyingli 2 года назад

"It is later shown" is the key phrase. How do you know Clark can move that fast at that age? Even if he can move that fast, Jonathan's would've been ripped apart if Clark moved him at the speed you're describing. Plus, it's actually very faithful to the source material to have Jonathan telling Clark to hide his powers from others until he grows up.

To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? He that has ears to hear, let him hear.
Are you saved? Where will you go when you die? Heaven or hell?
The Gospel, which means the Good News is the news that God Almighty, the Creator came in the flesh as Jesus Christ to take away the sin of the world. The one God is a trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Son came and laid down his own life to save ours. His sacrifice on the cross paid the price for our redemption with his own blood. On the third day he rose from dead and offers the gift of salvation and forgiveness to those that repent and trust in him. Although God's creation was created perfect, having no death, sickness and disease, the creation became corrupted through Adam and Eve in them disobeying God. In this rebellion the creation became fallen through the curse of sin and mankind became separated from God. This world is fallen, but God offers reconciliation to him through his provision at the cross. Ultimately God will restore his creation to perfection when he returns but those that who reject his offer of redemption will remain condemned by their sins and go to hell.

Man of Steel is a film that I think with a re-draft or two, could have been up there with Batman Begins as my favourite Origin Story film
What didn't work for me was that I feel the flashbacks were in the wrong order, the flashback with Jonathan and Clark debating really means nothing to the tension because we already know what he's going to do. What really needed to be done is that the flashbacks should have been building up to the Oil Rig rescue, which would have made his first act mean a lot more to the narrative.
And I actually would say that Superman's arc in Dawn of Justice really should of been kept in the first movie, it feels like a second half of one film being put in a sequel
If those two things were changed, I think we'd have a much stronger narrative

To be fair I honestly feel like we should’ve got a stand alone man of steel 2. then a batflec film, then move on to Wonder Woman. Then Batman v Superman. Continued with a Batman 2 following a Batman with a renewed sense of justice from supes sacrifice. Then aqua man, Wonder Woman 2, and flash. Then finally justice league. Then everyone gets another standalone movie leading into a JL 2 starting the actual darkseid invasion setting up a flashpoint situation with darkseid winning and controlling Clark creating the knightmare future seen in BvS, it would have way more relatability and emotional stake with the characters after spending more time with them. It was all just way too rushed to me tbh. Snyder only really needed to direct the Superman, Batman, and JL films to me then have others handle the other leaguers.

@@jazzyb3424 Yes, we definitely should've gotten at least Aquaman and Flash before JL, and then a standalone each before JL 2. I bet that if Snyder had more sway in WB, he would've made sure that they were made. Despite the fact that Snyder had to introduce 3 new heroes, use a hero that had to share a movie, and introduce a new villain, I really like ZSJL. The theatrical version was trash; they should've just trimmed/sped up some of the long slo mo scenes and removed a couple of others to make it 3 hrs instead of all of the reshoots that just didn't fit.

    • @catfinity8799
      @catfinity8799 2 года назад

@@jazzyb3424 Also, I don't think that we needed a Batman movie before BvS. We see a Batman that has lost Robin and his faith in humanity, and one who is willing to kill. I feel like we should've seen Batman's recovery from that mindset rather than his fall. While we do see Batman soften in BvS, we don't really get a segway between BvS Batman and JL Batman, so it'd make more sense to show that in a Batman movie.

Overall, while MoS may have not won most people over ,its hard to deny that it’s got a fanbase. For them it’s a masterpiece of the genre. But STM is something else entirely. It’s one thing being arguably the best superhero film ever but STM is beyond that. It’s simply one of the best films ever made and people whether they’re comic book fans or not ,recognise that. It’s a classic in the same way as the godfather or raiders of the lost ark or back to the future or shawshank redemption. It’s just one of those films.

Here is the problem with Man of Steel: Superman was hardly a savior in the film. We don't even see him-as Superman in cape and all-helping ordinary people in more "conventional" crime situations (bankrobbers, terrorists, murderers, etc.) Instead, shortly after he dons the suit he faces general Zod, leading to utter destruction, devastation, and mass loss of life. His presence caused far more harm than good. Without him on Earth, Zod and his team never would have sought him there.

He urged Clark to find out who he is and where he comes from, and when he’s saying that Clark needs to keep himself hidden he says it’s because there is so much at stake. He tells Clark that he will change the world someday.

I've nothing but love and respect for the Reeve Superman, it paved the way for where we are today, but my god is it boring (by todays standards) never once in the show did it feel like Superman was ever in danger of losing and for me that takes away any disbelief I have, Superman will save the day and everyone has a laugh and moves on 80s cheese ball.
Man of Steel on the other hand I went in knowing Superman was gonna save the day, its superman for god sakes of course he's gonna but wait The people are scared of him, this is new, Zod and his cronies are kicking his ass, holy shit whats going on..., wait the army are helping, superman needs help... and all of a sudden we have something interesting, this superman isn't this perfect god like character, he's not generic hero #1 he's flawed, imperfect and actually has character and for me this is what defines a hero, his moral choices he has to make and the mistakes he makes along the way, hell when his mother (mather) was at risk he didn't care where fayora landed when he yeeted her away his only thought was "save mom" suddenly hes becoming a character you can atune with hes not above the realm of humanity.
Again I'm not hating on the Reeves Superman but after Man of Steel its a very boring take on the hero.
Hell even if we go into the WB library of cartoons and Animated films some of the best episodes are when Superman is pushed, made angry and made to brake that perfect hero status in order to save the day.

Grew up watching Reeve's Superman and absolutely loved it but always wanted to see Superman do the kind of stuff that we see him do in Man Of Steel. Visuals, effects, realism, and all that kind of stuff are a very big factor for me in a comic book film and Man Of Steel trumps Superman in those aspects. Man Of Steel makes me feel how strong Superman really is and for me that is important, it is one of the reasons why I love the character so much.

Christopher Reeves lifting heavy stuff tells me he's Superman but that does NOT make it feel or look any real. Obviously it was limited by the technology available to them, but that doesn't mean I will give it any extra points. I go by how the movie looks and feels. Reeve's Superman movie was amazing and a landmark film but it doesn't feel real, atleast not to me.
Cavill's superman actually FEELS Like how Superman would be in real life and how the elements behave when he is flying or how things break when he smashes into them by mistake. This is obviously assisted by the technology available in 2012 but there's no discrediting that. Cinema is a visual experience and all of this added to the score and sound definitely did it for me.
Coming to that last fight in Man Of Steel, Superman didn't kill people, he was trying to control Zod who was bred and trained his entire life to be a warrior and he WANTED to kill with a vengeance. Clark by then, had only 1 day's experience of being Superman. It was not a fair fight and there was going to be casualties.

@@naminabantu well not if you look at Batman v Superman will you see a clear image of Superman flying saw through buildings destroying people like it's 9/11. But again I can see your points but that still doesn't make Henry Cavill feel like Superman just because he can make the ground move when he flies or make the ground shake when he punches something that doesn't give me a sense of power it just shows me recklessness. Superman is the animated series said it best " I feel the the world around me is made out of cardboard always scared of using my full strength because I'm worried I might hurt or injure someone" superman doesn't go all out because he knows the death of millions he would be responsible for. I mean hell a good solid punch turned Dark Side into a vegetable. So this Henry cavill's first route as Superman would be a lie because he has done things with his powers before, like his super strength and flight. So him having no choice to fight Zod in an city is also bad because literally Zod calls him ahead of time before even arriving to Earth to tell Superman he wants him he could have easily went to the Antarctic and had a fight there knowing that Zod is bad even having dreams to show that God doesn't care about the human race. So their show how been a better way to a fight between the two, that's why for me Christopher Reeves is the superior Superman because he shows restraint even though it is his first time being Superman he knows the dangers of going full out with his powers and the death he could cause by going down that path

Reeves is definitely the best version. Nothing against Cavill as actor. I think he could do a great job as Superman if he had a better script. The problem is that, while I respect MoS idea of showcasing a more mature and inexperient version of Superman, Warner bros overused this concept in the movie, showcasing Superman's flaws but not his streghts and moments of evolution. The mistakes that Superman makes in at the beginning of movie still happen in the end of the movie and are never treated as big deal, with Clark never stoping to realize the mistakes he is making or people calling out for his behavior, making MoS version of Superman come off not as inexperient hero who is learning to be better, but a completly bland unlikable moron, plus making the ending where Clark adopts his secret identity feeling dishonest and unearned.

When he caused destruction at first he was attacked by the army because they couldn't tell if he was on their side or not. Then after he teams up with the military and beats zod hes blammed for the black zero event as a whole in the subsequent film. He is also blammed for people he cant save. "How does he determine who lives and dies". In BvS every good thing he did was ostracized

@@elijahlee3610 Reeves's Superman didn't have consequences? Okay, here's one question : Why did he decide to recover his power and give up the chance to be with Lois, since by your logic his action had zero consequence? Answer: Because Zod had taken over the USA, killing people in the process and would probably kill more if Superman didn't showed up to fight him.
Also, while I'm not a big fan of how he recover his power, in the Donner version (which I consider to be the definitve version of Superman II) Jor El tells Clark that the machine could help him recover his power at the cost of his energy, implying that Clark would never be able to talk to him like in the first movie. He got his powers back but would no longer be able to talk to the thing that linked him with his late biological parents. Is that not a consequence?
Plus, even with his powers back Superman had difficulty in the fight against Zod to the point he tricked him using the machine to remove his powers. He saved the day by using not a Deus Ex machina (which is something that shows up out of nowhere, solves the situation and is never spoken again) but using a plot point that was already establish in the movie. If the machine was establish during their fight I would definitly agree that is a deus ex machina.
None this was the case for Cavill's Superman. He caused destruction and lost people's trust, how this affects him? Does he tries to figure out one way to fix things? Does he consider learn how to overcome his inexperience (the main excuse way his Superman is such a reckless impulsive unlikable character) and find new ways to use his powers to protect people without hurting them? No. He makes the same mistakes and when is confronted by the consequences is either in silence looking angsty or basically blames humanity asking if they are worth saving or worth of a protector, like humans are the problem. This is not x-men where humans have prejuice against a good likable hero, this is unlikable character who doesn't take responsability from his actions and instead blames others for his problem (which doesn't surprise me considering that this version of Superman was the one who was told by his adopt father that he maybe should let his friends die in bus accident).
If you like this version, fine, your opinion, but for me, the best live action version of Superman, the one who capture the spirit and the heart of who the hero is and what he represents is the Christopher Reeves.

The movie just had Superman killing Zod, which portrayed as something very tragic and that affected him pretty bad and the goverment still doesn't trust him because Metropolis destruction. The movie tries to end in a happy optimistic note, with Clark adopting his identity and accepting his humanity, which makes no sense considering every bad thing that he went throught. That's the equivalent of lion king have the Mufasa death scene and then be followed by the ending, with Simba as the new king.
I feel the ending would had work much better if it was showed people talking about Superman, being thankfull that he saved his lifes, showcasing that Clark actions had also good consequences. He did earn the trust of people (not everyone but some), making very justifiable for him to decide to move to Metropolis and use his powers to save them, to protect not just humanity, but also the people who trust him now (and when I said people, I mean other character beside Martha and Lois Lane).

The up-close flight scenes (take offs and landings) in the first two Superman films are extraordinary, even by today's standards. Also, I like that you have real actors holding onto real helicopters, cars, buses, etc. However, modern CGI compositing would have made the backgrounds (i.e. superman flying against the city skyline) so incredible. Conversely, although the CGI in the Man of Steel ads a great deal of depth and realism in the ships and landscapes, it lacks the warmth and intimacy of the original films.

Great video. Just saw both movies back to back. This helped me tremendously to see where the major philosophical differences between both movies lie.
Man of Steel has been criticized to death (see what I did there?) because Kal El decides to kill General Zod. I'll tell you what is to me the major difference between the two movies, beside the obvious areas in tone, visuals, story, etc.
In Superman The Movie, Clark Kent reaches the Artic Circle and creates the Fortress of Solitude. He meets an avatar of his father, Jor El who quickly explains to Clark who he really is, about the destruction of Krypton and how he reached earth. We as the audience hear all of that. But then, and it's easy to miss of you don't pay attention, Kal El remains in the Fortress of Solitude for twelve years, learning from Kal El all of the accumulated knowledge of the known universe. In essence, he is taught not only history, science, philosophy but also MORALITY. He becomes not only the most powerful being on earth but also the most moral. He comes away from the experience fully formed as Superman. He IS both equally powerful and good. There is NO conflict within him. This to me cancels out any criticism of Superman being either naiive or a "boy scout" or anything approaching being childlike as he is often called. He is simply a reflection of Jor El's teaching and hence, is whole.
Man of Steel whether intentionally or not, leaves out those essential twelve years of education for the confused Clark Kent and sends out a powerful but inexperienced demi god who does not know much beyond the cool two minute history lesson about the destruction of Krypton and his arrival on earth. Except for him reading Plato while he is yet again picked when he was a kid, and beside his human father's mid western values, Kal El's education as Superman is incomplete. This may well have been on purpose and it may explain why he kills Zod. In Superman II, Kal El removes Zod's powers and Zod falls to his death. You could say that is a distinction without a difference but the volitional act of lunging towards Superman belongs to Zod and it kills him and the rest of his cohort.
In any event, Zack Snyder's more ambiguously ethical Superman is more relatable, yes, but he is not yet fully Superman like Donner's.

    • @DoroteoVilla
      @DoroteoVilla 10 месяцев назад

@@edgardoMurniaThere's a very telling line in Batman v Superman that I think explains how Zack Snyder viewed Superman. Lex Luthor posits that "if God is all powerful then he cannot be all good". This is the Zack Snyder conception of Superman. It's a post modern /Greek view of God or gods (small g). In both, gods are petty, jealous, morally ambiguous and cruel. In short, just like humans.
It sounds like you're in the Snyder camp. Donner's view is what I would a Judeo-Christian conception of morality.
      Matthew 5:43-48
"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy'. But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven."
Call it naiive if you like but even today, it is a moral code which millions of people in the world follow and this is why Superman is still such a beloved character and it's what made the Richard Donner version of the character so great.
My favorite scene from Excalibur, the John Boorman movie about King Arthur, happens when Arthur has been reduced and weakened by his punishment of Sir Lancelot and Gwynevere for their betrayal. Percival brings Arthur the Holy Grail and Arthur drinks. He is then reborn in a symbolic act of forgiveness and he is again a knight and a king. He had allowed very human feelings of anger, pride and vengeance reduce him but was reborn.
We all love characters not only because they're strong but because they are good. This is what was missing from Zack Snyder's Superman and largely what is missing from a lot of modern story telling.

Its promise was whispered in the first days of the Creation under the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil: "Ye shall be as gods." It is the great alternative faith of mankind. I’m sorry but, couple points you made seem to be senseless: the idea that Superman the movie had more to live up to than Man of Steel or had more to prove and, the idea that both Kryptons feel inhabitable. Krypton for Superman 78 seems more unrealistic, just by your own admission that it’s sterile. There’s nothing to 78 Krypton, it feels dark, more abandoned no animals, nothing but crystal and buildings; no real detail to the planet’s environment. Snyder’s Krypton felt like you said, organic, more believable as a planet with inhabitants. You see technology being used in conjunction of the planet, a very evolved way to live compared to how we do things now where it feels using technology is adverse to nature. Furthermore, on the subject about which had more to live up to, Superman the movie came a perfect time because of the success of Star Wars a year prior. Yes, Star Wars is considered Science Fiction genre, but at the end of the day, the characters are “super heroes and villains”. Fantastical abilities, super weapons, saving the universe from the threat of evil, those are parts of the make up of superhero films. Superman 78 didn’t need to prove that a film like that could be done or popular because, Star Wars had already made it ok. Man of Steel on the other hand, had to live up to The Avengers, The Dark Knight Trilogy, successful superhero films of the past and, attempt to revive the Superman film fandom which at that point, was hurt due to films of the past. So, MOS had way more to live up to than Superman 78

Not a fan of this Superman and the DCEU world. The world felt darker because it feels darker through Clark’s eyes. At the end of the movie he still didn’t trust humanity because he destroyed the drone and he expects humans to trust him at the same time. And that lack of trust continues into BVS. This Superman wasn’t the right Superman to start a world. Plus Zach Snyder doesn’t respect Superman he said that himself.

I just think they lean into the gritty too much with man of steel.
We get so much exposition about hope and superman being a prodigy to lead humanity but the whole world and his parents are just too miserable and sorry to believe he'd ever become anything to aspire to.
His earth parents never give him good advice that would ever lead him to help people.
Zack Snyder also openly hates and looks down upon the optimism of superman.
If Zack Snyder wanted to deconstruct superman,he should've made a new character entirely.
Superman should simply retire as a character before changing so much that he's simply another brooder.
Audiences are also overwhelmed with not only real life grim and grittyness, they're also overwhelmed with moody broody heroes on screen.
The last thing anyone needs right now is an exposition driven, cynical superman.
A more hopeful and gentle superman would absolutely be welcome among modern audiences, especially if they parallel one of his scenes rescuing a suicidal girl, especially the one where he stays with the girl all night and let's her choose, giving her all the advice he can then simply waiting.
The modern world doesn't need more cynicism and dread,it needs more hope and wisdom.

The original Superman is the best by far. As one of those 'auteur' purists you have mentioned in the video, I do admit there are a few superhero films I enjoy, the original Superman being one of them. I find the Metropolis scenes beautiful to look at, and Christopher Reeve is so convincing as Superman. Plus, who can't forget Margot Kidder's wonderful performance as Lois Lane. I do admit looking back that Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor was a bit of a 2 dimensional villain, but aside from that, this movie is just great. I'm not so kind to Supermans 2, 3, and 4, but that's to be expected from someone who often looks down upon film sequels.
I saw Man of Steel at the cinema, and while I do admit that it has a some complexity that the original Superman lacked in some places, I didn't enjoy it as much as the original film and walked out just as Superman flew for the first time in that film

Also, Superman displays a complete range of emotions throughout the film. Hell, the whole reason he musters the energy to reverse time and save Lois is because of his emotions. Saying that Cavill showed more human emotion is laughable. Also, of course Man of Steel is edgy and don't pretend it isn't. Drab visuals, a brooding Superman, an overly-destructive final fight, Superman snapping Zod's neck, and the entire vision sequence where Superman drowns in bones beg to differ. You need only compare the deaths of Pa Kent to see how everything that made Superman 1978 uniquely great was what made Man of Steel awfully dull and tryhard.
In Superman ‘78, Pa Kent dies suddenly and quietly, absolutely 0 warning up front and it changed Clark. He learned a valuable lesson that day: that no matter how powerful he is there will always be some things he just can’t do. This is the perfect way to humble Clark and bring him down to earth, and it sets you off to a story about the greatest, most optimistic character in a world that is becoming increasingly scandalous and pessimistic. The moment of Pa’s death was so powerful it was even adapted in what many will call the best Superman story - All-Star Superman.
By contrast, in Man of Steel Jon‘s death could have easily been prevented by Superman but wasn’t because Jon in Man of Steel has been teaching Clark to be morally confused, to be so cynical towards man and what he might do with the knowledge of a Superman that Clark can’t even decide that saving his father is worth giving himself away. This makes even less sense when you consider that the very first time we see Superman in this movie was the oil rig scene where he just casually reveals himself by saving a bunch of people with his Herculean strength. This is not the most optimistic man in an increasingly pessimistic world, this is a pessimistic man in a pessimistic world - and that’s how you destroy what’s unique about Superman, and taint the most archetypal and greatest superhero, producing mediocrity at best. Superman stories are hard for a lot of writers today because Superman doesn’t really jive with the postmodern, deconstruction landscape that really peaked with Watchmen in 1987 as far as the comics are concerned.

    • @elijahlee3610
      @elijahlee3610 3 года назад +3

Pay attention to the movies youre critizing, you look ignorant.
"No matter how powerful he is there will always be some things he just cant do..." thats not a valuable lesson thats redundant. Clark was never shown to be overconfident or rash. He always knew he wasnt a god this lesson never needed to be taught. However this lesson is retroactively invalidated when he learns to TIME TRAVEL at the end of the movie. He can now save anyone at any time. He became a god and has made fate bow before him. You praise reeve's movies for their "valuable life lessons" despite them being unnecessary and thematically contradictory. This is exactly why this "lesson" was never used in any other superman media. In fact smallville redeemed this plot point by having Johnathans heart attack directly result from clark time traveling. Instead of teaching a clark a lesson he never needed, this taught clark a valuable lesson, that changing fate ALWAYS has unforseen consequences.
"In a world that is becoming progressively scandalous and pessimistic" thats cute. The world was by no means a utopia but it was pretty peaceful and hopeful before superman came. This is why superman is immediately accepted into society and in some respects actually defied instead of being greeted with societal opposition. Superman was already in a light hearted world and thus needed to do little to fully give the world hope.
"Man of steel jons death could have been wasily prevented..." how does clark save his dad FROM A TORNADO without using powers?
"Teaching clark to be morally confused...." now youre just spewing ignorance. John was honest with clark. He told him how the world was, and what would happen if he revealed himself. Clark saw this for himself when kids were afraid of him and their parents defied him. Johnathan wanted clark to be ready for that responsibility and he wanted it to be HIS choice. "Youre going to have to decide what kind of man you want to be.....whether youre going to stand proud in front of the human race or not" when morally ambiguous questions came up such as should clark expose himself to save others Johnathan honestly says he doesnt know. That's a natural, human response. No parent would ever want to put their child in jeopardy even if it is for a selfless reason. Johnathan isnt teaching clark to be morally confused, he taught clark this is a morally ambiguous world and hes going to have to make his own choices.
"This makes even less sense when you..." LOL this rant is getting progressively dumber have you even watched the movie? First of all no thats not when we see "Superman", thats the first time you see clark saving people theres a difference. Its hard to tell when he truly became superman, but it can be argued he first did when he surrendered himself to humanity. Anyway him being at the oil rig did not expose him. Clark was a stranger to these people. He showed up saved them then got crushed. The survivors dont know who he is and probably thought he died. The whole first act showed how clark is a nomadic ghost, moving place to place saving people never staying in an area too long to protect his identity. Hes scared to reveal himself but that doesnt stop him from saving people. How superman of him. This is how lois tracks him down, by following the trial of lives he saved. Notice how most people he saved still didn't know him or of his whereabouts for the most part.
"This is not the most optimistic man in sn increasingly pessimistic world...." do you not know what a character arc is? Unlike Reeve's movies that condensed 12 years worth of character development into a 30 second time skip, cavil's movies gives an actually fleshed out arc. No one is going to be "the most optimistic man in the world" over night they need to work hard to achieve that mental fortitude and world view. This is exactly what cavil's superman does, as in BvS despite being ostracized, slandered and even NUKED he still said "this is my world" before sacrificing his life for it. His death inspired everyone even a morally jaded batman to admit "men are still good". Reeve's superman was a hopeful person in a hopeful world. The world gave its nukes to reeve, instead of throwing them at him like cavils. Cavils is a hopeful person that truly inspired a darkened world.
Side note, you realize reeve's superman never suffers consequences for anything he does and everything works out? If only cavil's sups had that luxury.

      @bradenhogan2 3 года назад +1

@@elijahlee3610 OK, there are some things I can grant you:
      - The time travel ending isn’t particularly satisfying in Superman 78. It’s by far the weakest point of the movie. I could go into detail about the behind the scenes issues that caused that ending to be less than perfect but obviously you don’t care, you’re critiquing the final product - just as I don’t care about behind the scenes issues on Snyder‘s films and am only critiquing what I have available to view. Suffice to say he wasn’t originally supposed to travel through time in the first movie, that was meant to be a big character moment in the second movie where he decides to forsake his father’s dying wishes to save Lois.
      - The lesson Clark learns in Superman that despite his great power, he can’t save everyone does not have a whole lot of set up. Obviously this is because of the structure that movie takes and how Krypton, Smallville, and Metropolis were all treated as separate movies. The Smallville sequence is like a short film, which is also why that transition to adult Superman happens abruptly. This is unconventional but it makes it more memorable and iconic to me than telling it through generic flashback scenes. That being said, that doesn’t mean there isn’t *any* setup. The scene before shows teenage Clark struggling to fit in at high school (isn’t this so angsty and cool?) and he uses his powers as a form of escapism to make him feel better, which is a sign that he’s too cavalier and doesn’t take using his power with great responsibility and weight. The next time you see him he is an adult, no longer a kid and he has spent the time in the fortress speaking to his Kryptonian father about philosophy, cosmology, ethics, etc. You may not have caught this and I don’t blame you but that transition is meant to indicate that Clark hasn’t had a personal or professional life from his late teens to the Christopher Reeve version. He literally lived in the fortress studying with his father all that time like how Batman spent years training to be Batman. That’s the implication, so I’d definitely say it feels natural that he would have a worldview and approach to life by the time he shows up in Metropolis.
As far as the “Man of Steel Clark has to earn/develop his character over years upon years,”
      1) we meet him when he’s an adult. He should already have some values, many of which (if this were any traditional Superman story) would have been instilled in him by his earth father’s guidance.
      2) Ok, you’re really gonna make a big point when I called him Superman before he got the suit? That still doesn’t explain why he wouldn’t out himself as having powers when he was like 18 to save his father but now that he’s in the “modern day” section of the story he has no problem with outing himself to complete strangers? Good thing the fact the movie is told through flashbacks conveniently covers that up so you forget about it before you get to the infamous “Jonathan Kent jumps into a tornado” scene.
      3) Just because Kal-El in Man of Steel says his crest means “hope” doesn’t make him a hopeful character. Nothing about him inspires hope in me. It’s got nothing to do with Cavill’s acting, it’s everything to do with the direction and writing. I don’t see that focus and vision with Man of Steel Superman. He says he’s hopeful but his character seems more nihilistic. That’s not Superman.
Things also do not always end up perfectly for Christopher Reeves’ Superman. Regardless of what version of Superman 2 you watch, that movie doesn’t end particularly happy for him as his ambitions to have a life with Lois are pretty much crushed and he has to double his focus on being a superhero. He also lost his connection to his Kryptonian father because of the mistakes he made in that movie. He still flies away smiling as he always did but if you actually consider what he’s just been through, you know it’s not all rainbows and butterflies in his world right now. If you’re counting sequels not directed by Donner, his life isn’t particularly ideal in Superman Returns either

Well you're half right since tom welling didn't play superman he played superboy from the 1949 comics where its was still Clark Kent but more about his time in smallville doing the saving of people and things he would later do on a bigger scale as superman according to the creators of the series in the superman documentary that came out as promotion for superman returns that's where the inspiration came from and he was called the blur because there was a lawsuit already going on over someone else using the title superboy so stems to reason they changed to to avoid legal action

There is NO comparison. Christopher Reeve's Superman worked so well because his Clark Kent was so incredibly different from his Superman. They had completely different ways of speaking, different mannerisms, different behaviors, even their very PERSONALITIES were different. You could totally buy that no one would give Clark Kent a second thought. All he had to do was take off his glasses and square his shoulders, stand up straight, and give that little smile in Lois' apartment and his ENTIRE BEING changed.
Now square that with Henry Cavill, who, while muscular and nice to look at, was basically the same dude with a pair or glasses thrown on him. There was nothing different about him. And he spent half the movie totally destroying Metropolis while fighting the enemies that by the time they were done, it looked worse that the aftermath of 9/11. While Christopher Reeve's Superman spent his time saving people, like Superman was MEANT to do.
There is no comparison. Reeve is Superman. He was PERFECT at going from Clark Kent to Superman with just a couple gestures. It was totally believable. Anyone could look at Cavill and be like "You know, he looks just like Superman"... but with Reeve, he blended in so perfectly and no one would look twice at this nerdy guy who acted the way he did and even fathom him being this major super hero.
Side note: I LOVE Return of Superman. I feel like it paid homage to Christopher Reeve and even LOOKS like Christopher Reeve, And he was doing things like saving people, again, the way Superman is SUPPOSED TO.

The destruction of Metropolis was caused by Zod and the Krytonian ship while Superman was on the other side of the world trying to destroy the other part of the engine. And Henry Cavill is Superman.

For me the perfect Superman movie exists somewhere between Superman 78 and Man of Steel. I appreciate Man of Steel attempting to modernize Superman and tell a story where Superman's actions have more ramifications...but it's still just too bleak for me and actually tone deaf in some moments (I say this as someone who enjoys 2/3 of MoS). Superman 78 is outdated on a technical level (I mean, it's 40 years old) and doesn't have quite the level of seriousness today's audiences have come to expect of superhero movies...but its version of Superman is someone who is more than simply relatable, he's aspirational. Superman should struggle with what figuring out how to do the right thing, and then we should see him figure out what the right thing is. I don't expect realism in my superhero movies, I expect verisimilitude in which the characters are true to the world in which they are depicted. Between the two, I respect what Snyder was trying to do but ultimately Superman the Movie is the one that still has my heart because it's just, well...Superman.

As a film, i think man of steel is superior. But as a superman portrayal, christopher reeve Superman 1978 is superior.

As a film As well superman the movie is vastly superior. MoS for non comic book fans will most likely come off as a generic modern sci fi flick and of course we all know the reception it got . Superman the movie is much more than a sci fi movie or a superhero movie. Its an epic as well as a drama and of course the climax contains the sequences of a disaster film. The film was Oscar and bafta winning material unsurprisingly and I think looking back even non superhero people look back as the film as a classic . Not just of the genre but as a film in general, Christopher reeve and that theme music just such a big part of pop culture.

@@shaghilathar3588 I dont think Superman The Movie holds up today as it did back then. If your a superman fan its definitely a must see, but I think Man of Steel tells a far better story, which is the main reason why i prefer it. I guess i can understand your opinion though. After all, superhero movies in general owe alot to the og superman film.

@@johnarbuckle3406 I think it holds up tremendously well. Is the film campy ? Well not really no. It’s a very optimistic film with occasional moments of camp but overall it’s treated with a lot of gravitas and has plenty of dramatic and poignant moments to balance out. Have the visuals aged well ? That’s mostly down to taste. For those accustomed to modern superhero flicks, they probably will be left feeling unimpressed by the films visuals which I can understand. From their point of view,Krypton has a bland landscape , it may seem boring not seeing superman fly at the speed of a bullet through the sky and of course CGI solves these issues for them. But then there’s people like myself who have an eye for in camera effects and opticals and overall it’s very difficult to find a film that gives you the same experience. Seeing superman flying has never looked more convincing than in the films physical flying shots. The fortress of solitude to this day looks magnificent in its scale and design. The sequences such as krypton being destroyed, the fortress of solitude being formed, Superman chucking the missile into space and the disaster sequences in California still look amazing. Like I said by today’s standards these aren’t things that will stretch your imagination but when you see them done as well or as convincingly in this movie , it doesn’t detract from the experience.
