Stuff I (probably) stole from Wikipedia:
Superman is a fictional superhero. The character was created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, and first appeared in the comic book Action Comics #1 (cover-dated June 1938 and published April 18, 1938).[1] The character regularly appears in comic books published by DC Comics, and has been adapted to a number of radio serials, movies, and television shows.
Superman was born on the planet Krypton and was given the name Kal-El at birth. As a baby, his parents sent him to Earth in a small spaceship moments before Krypton was destroyed in a natural cataclysm. His ship landed in the American countryside, near the fictional town of Smallville. He was found and adopted by farmers Jonathan and Martha Kent, who named him Clark Kent. Clark developed various superhuman abilities, such as incredible strength and impervious skin. His foster parents advised him to use his abilities for the benefit of humanity, and he decided to fight crime as a vigilante. To protect his privacy, he changes into a colorful costume and uses the alias "Superman" when fighting crime. Clark Kent resides in the fictional American city of Metropolis, where he works as a journalist for the Daily Planet. Superman's supporting characters include his love interest and fellow journalist Lois Lane, Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen and editor-in-chief Perry White. His most well-known villain is Lex Luthor. Superman is part of the DC Universe, and as such often appears in stories alongside other DC Universe heroes such as Batman and Wonder Woman.
Although Superman was not the first superhero character, he popularized the superhero archetype and defined its conventions. Superheroes are usually judged by how closely they resemble the standard established by Superman. He was the best-selling superhero character in American comic books up until the 1980s.[2]

Superman doesn't need to be modernized. In every generation, there are cynical people. People that contemplate suicide. Contemplate taking a life for the sake of himself, or his family. Children that grow up in an awful family, with a horrible childhood. We belittle each other. Condemn each other for the sake of being negative. Lie. Hide who we really are. Do wrong. Superman is the juxtaposition of that. He always tells you that there is always another way. That no matter the lows, you should never turn to do wrong. You should always be a good thing. A good man. A great Superman
Thank you
It's always been a myth that Superman belongs to less cynical times. The 70s was a very cynical decade, Vietnam War, Watergate ect made people less trustworthy, one needs to look at the films of its era to see this cynicism reflected in movies like Taxi Driver. Hell Superman was born in the depression on the eve of WW2 far harsher times then we have ever lived through, but Superman is and always has been that beacon of hope, something to strive for.
@@edgardoMurnia reality isn't a one sided dystopia either. I didn't say the world is all sunshine and rainbows, nor did I say that people are irrefutably good. All I did was say that Superman represents a world where good triumphs against the negative odds and that we should TRY to be better. Now, if you have something meaningful to say, please say it in a more comprehensive way. Otherwise, forever hold your piece. The last thing we need is more mindless negativity from cynics
@@edgardoMurnia It is well written. Just because something isn't realistic doesn't make it a poorly written movie. If that's how you judge your media, then you need to seriously reconsider your viewpoint of criticism. It isn't "realistic" that Gotham decided not to blow up the boats in the Dark Knight. Yet that scene is cited as one of the best parts of that movie. Or, even at the end of that movie, with Gotham seeing Harvey as a white knight and Batman being villainized after one action. Then he comes back and is all of a sudden a symbol of hope in The Dark Knight. Realism doesn't make a movie good, nor does it make it bad. If you can buy an 11 foot tall purple alien collecting 6 gems of infinite power while fighting a backyard hodgepodge of aliens and superpowered beings, then Superman 78 should not be much of a stretch for you.
@@edgardoMurnia fair enough. I can understand you being dissatisfied with the movies portrayal of Superman (motivation wise) and the people at large. I too have not seen the movie in a significant amount of time. However, as a representation of what Superman means as an icon of hope and his do-gooder(ness) as a whole within this movie elevates it for me. There's a video by someone who's name elludes me at the moment that explains why I greatly appreciate this movies interpretation of Superman. It was titled "Save the Cat," I believe. I apologize for attacking the content of your character earlier. I'm just exhausted from comments with similar wording claiming that Superman as a character is pointless or poorly written/concieved while citing the works of Zack Snyder as a "realistic" interpretation of the character because of how edgy it is.
It's a bird! No! It's a plane! No it's

It's amazing how, just like he did in the comics with actions comics 1, Superman is the hero who also started the sucess of super heroes in adaptations such as movies with the Christopher Reeve film, cartoons with the max fleischer cartoon and TV series with George Reeves "Adventures of Superman". He is truly one of the most important super heroes of all.
My favorite part of the movie is that scene where Lois died in a car crash and Superman cried so hard that he spin the Earth backwards with one sentence:
_"IT'S REWIND TIME!!!"_
He didn't spin the Earth backwards, he traveled through time and we saw his perspective.
@@probot6515i'm two years late however feel the need to Say That scene was a huge mistake. If Súperman can just go back in time and fix anything he doesn't like then Where's the tensión and drama?
@@edgardoMurnia the weird thing is That in the cómics at the time Súperman could actually do time travel but he couldn't change past events Even if he tried
The time travel scene is easily explained to anyone demanding cynicism. Superman isn't turning the earth backwards. He's flying faster than the speed of light, which causes him to travel backwards in time, and we see the earth move backwards because we are watching him time travel, not because he's literally moving the earth directly.
Superman saves everyone and every generation. He's truth, he's justice, he's more human than many superheroes will actually be. Superman is the backbone of pop culture. He might be a pop culture charecter fiction, but he's inspiration and proof that we in real life can be better people. We can be heroes in our real life stories and do so much good, cause that what's Superman is all about and that's what greatness is all about. Long live Superman ❤️
Ive been thinking of making a superhero film and I watched this film to get inspiration, its helped me think of ideas
I've also toyed the idea of making one. What kind of film you want to make?
@@user-mx4is4fx3c A Superman style story about an alien named Echo but hes like a normal person and everyone knows hes an alien. He gets a suit when hes 18 that lets him replicate anything he touches and even though he tries to use it to help people, the antagonist would try to stop him because he fears hes a danger
@@KaleBennett Hmm interesting. It could also have some sort of twist where the antagonist uses some sort of disguise to frame him for crimes using his shapeshfting abilities against him
@@KaleBennett What I'd like to make at some point is a character study for mr freeze. A batman movie with him in the center I mean. One that would give him a happily ever after with Nora
@@user-mx4is4fx3c That could be interesting too, like Joker
I kinda find it hypocritical when people say that superman wouldn’t work in today’s cynical world. Personally i think the 70’s was a MUCH more cynical time than today, and the fact that Donner’s superman was a smash hit speaks volumes about superman’s appeal
"When it comes to the sheer quality of superhero movies today--"
You and I definitely have drastically different opinions on these films.
This movie is like the citizen kane of superhero movies.
The turning the world backwards was never meant to be literal. It's Superman flying so fast that he himself is traveling back in time. Once he gets ahead of where he needs to be he moves forward to the moment where he could be there for Lois.
I always just assumed that the earth spinning backwards was just a way of Superman himself traveling back in time (from his POV, and given the less advanced special effects, the earth spinning backwards would be how it looked to travel backwards). Makes the scene make more sense to me (and makes it consistent with other superhero time travel scenes like Flash in ZSJL traveling faster than light to move backwards through time).
I feel bad that i still haven't seen this movie
What are you waiting for?
@@certainly2509 good question
Try the special edition one. That's the best cut.
From what I've gathered so far... "SUPERMAN: The Movie" (1978) seems underappreciated by a lot of kids in today's world who are, basically, inundated by live-action feature films based on comic book superheroes ! To simplify... If "SUPERMAN: The Movie" (1978) didn't exist, then EVERY SINGLE SUPERHERO MOVIE that came after it including the entire MCU would not exist today !
In fact, it was "SUPERMAN: The Movie" (1978) that helped make me a big fan of comic book superheroes (in general) to this day !
#Restorethesnyderverse
Tbh superman the movie isn't even that movie which you have to appreciate because it came out in the 70s or because without this we wouldn't have this or that because the films good enough that you can just enjoy it on its own terms. It's impossible to really replicate this film .
I love superman movie that are awesome
In my book the only worthy successor to Christopher Reeves is Brandon Routh. I mean Tom Welling did a fantastic job in Smallville but I’m referring to a successor playing a fully formed Superman, which we never saw Tom Welling as. Henry Cavill did his best and Man of Steel had some interesting ideas, but he just couldn’t embody Superman the same way.
You're right. People do say that a hero like superman can't work in our cynical world. And come to think of it, that's basically people's reaction to Superman in BvS. Do you think their reaction is a meta commentary on fan's outlook on the man of steel?
@@edgardoMurnia Yeah but Spiderman is different because he's facing everyday problems most people face. It's more easy to make him relatable.
Honestly, I feel that the biggest reason 1978's Superman: The Movie made us believe a man could fly was not only the effects, but mainly just because of Christopher Reeve. Because of him, we believed a man could fly, because we believed the man!
I got this movie for $4 at a Walmart bargain bin. What a steel for the Man Of Steel!
I would like to point out that you (for a majority of the video) summarized & analyzed the movie. As opposed to discussing the impacts the movie had on cinema. Thereby making the title misleading. Just some constructive criticism. It’s still always amazing to hear your voice.
Yellow sunlight actually gives him powers.
One of the best comic book movies ever.
Superman movies should be the best “feel good” movies.

Great video man! Pretty much agree with you. Love from Italy!
My life wouldn’t be as great if those movies wheren’t a part of my life
What about the alternate cut of this movie?
Nice video
Listen, I love Henry Cavill as much as the next guy...
But god dammit give me my trunks back
I am on the minority of DC fans that were glad they removed the trunks. They always looked silly to me
ΑΡΙΣΤΟΤΕΛΗΣ ΛΑΧΑΝΟΠΟΥΛΟΣ
To me they’re a trademark of being a superhero. The strong men of the past used to wear them, and it makes the heroes look more god-like. Also, it helps break up the colors. Otherwise Batman will look to gray in the middle and Superman will look too blue
@@alexandersmith7061 The colorbreak argument is a solid one. But as for strongmen they're as you said, relics of the past. Outdated. At least imo
I don't like the look if Cavills suit
LETSSSSS GOOOOO BOIIIISSS !!!!!!!!
Smallville will always be the best Superman incarnation with Christopher Reeve Superman
I loved the smallville series and he is my second fav but Christopher reeves will always be a legend
Yes, very well put. It is a very good movie and this video makes me want to go back and re-watch it.
Also the part where Superman goes back in time to save Lois,
I always saw it, not as him flying so fast he makes the world spin backwards to reverse time,
but that he flew so fast that he sent himself backwards in time a few minutes so he could save her.
Idk that's just how I always perceived it, it just seemed like the more logical scenario. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
.......................................that's honestly enhanced my experience a thousand fold. You absolute maniac. THANK YOU! :)
12:00 I completely agree with you channel Pup
You know this is actually one of my favorite non Disney movies mostly because superman is my favorite superhero
@@edgardoMurnia hey never too old Man

Not just the first superman the first superhero movie
Adam west batman the movie
joshua powell fair enough the first superhero movies
there was also a batman movie in the 40s

@@National7575 you mean the animated movie year one? no there was a live action batman movie in the 40s
Bold statement but makes more sense the more I think of it
What Is The Music Used In This Video Called?
I am. Dead inside that is. I have been completely and utterly destroyed by realitys cynicism. What a shame.
Superman 1978 greatest superhero movie ever.
Where do you watch Superman The Final Cut?
Superman after Lois died be like: It's rewind time!
Could you do ninja turtles content
Hi
Christopher Burnham hiii???
Did you know Spider-man webs are edible I Googled it
What?
Don’t worry Spider-Man, it’s just Flash Thompson.
This movie was a golden masterpiece 💛
Superman the movie is still ( alongside the dark knight ) the best superhero film ever made. Its not perfect. The scene where lex Luthor and his team are fiddling with the navy rocket goes on for a little long and the climax will raise a couple of questions for some but still from the fx to the set design to the theme to the cast ( there's no 2 ways about it christopher reeve WAS superman ) just an instant classic and what's great is how much WB have pushed it out over the years. First with the special edition released in 2001 ( my preferred version of the film ) then with the blu Ray release 5 years later ,then the release of the 3hr 8 min tv extended cut in 2017 and then of course the following the year the 4K release . So in 2022 you can enjoy superman the movie in pretty much every version possible .
Otizburg?!?
Hi
The funny thing is people tend to think of Superman 78 as a product of the 70s , a bygone era 50 yrs in the past. However the Superman that Donner and Reeve gave us was from a even more bygone era. Reeve's Superman was the late Golden age/ early Silver age version. In the 70s Clark Kent was no longer the meek, mild ,geeky, Milquetoast character. He no longer worked at a newspaper , or even the Daily Planet. Yes the world is jaded today, Cynical, and crazy. But the 70s weren't exactly the good old days. Trump has destroyed normalcy certainly. But this was a decade of Vietnam, Watergate, Civil rights, womens movement, high inflation, stagnation, high crime, energy , gas shortage. The country was extremely cynical of the " American Way". But Donner understood that's EXACTLY why the world needed to have that hero to believe in. Superman IS A HERO. an inspiration of what we can be. It gets lost Today because there are no more heros. Comic book characters are now " complex", " relatable"
The movies are more realistic, grounded, and attuned to our current times. The whole reason we go to the movies is to escape reality. It's ok to wish, dream. Superman is not only a Comic tale, it's an American myth. Its our legend, and God figure. Its what we can aspire to become, instead of dragging him down to our level. The country needed a hero. A pick me up. To get us dreaming again.
lex has hair in this?! MOVIE RUINED
Watch the movie. haha
He wears wigs to hide his own mortality.
What about star wars 🤔
I agree that this movie was important for cinema, but this movie was released just a year after none other than the original Star Wars movie. That has to be taken into account here.
West Goku actually pull something impressive, neato.
Huh your lip-synch remains me of SA,SA2
I know it's not intended as a compliment but I'm taking it as a compliment.
Channel Pup okay
Yessir tge new one sucks X10
We as a society need to stop holding this movie up as the ONLY superman template and accept unique versions.
You’ll appreciate the next video.
I have always loved this movie. All the way up till he flys the world backwards and magically saves the day. If a better ending this movies legacy would be better.
