I rewatched Superman last night and no one can hold a candle to Christopher Reeve's portrayal. Even though Henry Caville is my generation's Superman, Reeve is always Superman to me. He was kind, generous, and courageous without being flat or two dimensional. He was a nuanced character without any dark side. He defeated bad guys, but he got a cat out of a tree without it feeling like a cliché because he liked helping everyone. He had sass without being cruel, and was a chivalrous charmer. We will never see a Superman like that again. It should have been untouched
I remember being a little kid and hearing that scream and being like "OH DAMN!" Also, yeah Superman is what we SHOULD WANT to be, NOT a mirror for what we are.

In the case of this movie, I don't think the origin story is unnecessary, firstly because let's face it it's the best Superman origin story put to film, and secondly because the emotional and thematic conflicts of that story pay off at the climax, and it's one of the few superhero movie origin stories that does something like that and does it so well.
Plus, I mean, yeah, no doubt most people knew of Superman but not necessarily his whole back story or anything, lots of people will go see a movie but not read the comic.

Even when he was fighting two kryptonians who couldn't fly at the same time superman shown he is capable of even temporarily take them out. But somehow he couldn't do it to zod. Even if they were equals in strength that would still mean they can knock each other out. Even in the neck snap scene somehow the people couldn't leave the place they were but immediately evacuated after superman killed zod. If nothing was stopping them why didn't they leave sooner?
Otto Andersson Okay just making sure. While u make some good points, I will say there are many countries that would beg to differ. You sadly have to admit America has had a bad history of backing dictators in the name of anti communism and supporting them as they wreak terror and havoc on countries. Thats left quite the bad taste in the mouths of many and we have never truly even owned up or apologized for that (Some would say we shouldn't) its a complicated mess. I'm certainly not gonna bag on my home country but I do know the bad its done.
This is what writers can't seem to understand about Superman. He is what WE SHOULD be. A symbol hope, justice, and how things are supposed to be. Superman shouldn't conform to today's society standards. Superman takes the world as it should be, not as how it is. Superman is not Batman. And they shouldn't turn him into Batman.
Trevor Philips how could you say something so controversial yet so brave? In all seriousness, such an accurate representation of *what people have done to poor Zack Snyder, even when his daughter died*
People love Batman because he represents humanity's potential to transcend its limitations. People love Superman because he represents the noble, heroic ideals that all of us aspire to. But neither of them can hold a candle to the real greatest comic book superhero of them all: Spider-Man. Why? We've always needed heroes to aspire to, and we always will, but today, we also need to relate to them on some level. Keyword being "also." Spider-Man is the Ur-example of the rare breed of heroes who strikes that balance. He's not the fastest, strongest, toughest, or even the most intelligent superhero out there, but he is the most alive, the most real.
+h0m3st4r Wrong, recently Spiderman is the CEO of his own global company. He is a rich guy now selling tech to the whole world. Not only that, peter is a known scientist. so he is pretty smart. In other words he is kinda tony stark now. I am not kidding.
"Superman should reflect what society is not what we wish it was" After a very stressful day of work, let's all sitback and watch a movie that reminds us of how stressful our day is. What a way to relax.
"As a pantheon of American pop culture, Superman should evolve to reflect society as it is, not what we wish it was" That there defeats the entire premise of the character.
+VenomShock I agree. Still, if the character evolves to something different , that could be good, don't you agree? Superman as a character not aged well imo. His villains are not so compelling like the villains of Batman or Spiderman. The whole message of the boyscout is simply stupid at this point. Society changed a lot since the 40's. I don't think the take of the character in MoS was the right choice, but it is commendable how they at least tried to change and adapt the character. We still don't have a "fine tuned" Superman, this version of the character (MoS) will endure for the next 10 years or so. Pity, but we can't expect much from Snyder.
Rafael Teles I think he's aged fine, it's just nobody is willing to evolve him in a way that doesn't sacrifice the character's integrity. Superman in the animated series or Mark Waid's Birthright would be a perfect basis for a modern cinematic incarnation of the character. As someone aspiring to be a filmmaker, I too have had my own ideas about evolving the character. Nobody has quite done a movie yet like Nolan was doing with Batman where the basis is challenging Superman's ideals. Also I don't think Spider-Man's villains are particularly good outside the movies. Memorable? Yes. Compelling? No.
***** Well, if we consider only the movies, the portrayal of Doc Ock in Spiderman 2 was just perfect. Molina nailed the character, this is something that most people agree. Spiderman don't have a single "main" villain like the joker, magneto or luthor, the character has at least 3 signature villains. All of these 3 character, Ock, green goblin and Venom can be considered THE spiderman villain. No other mainstream character has this kind of leverage. Sure, they are not complex and multi layered like some Batman villains. Still, at least the character has an pantheon of good villains because he is flexible enough to sustain this, Spiderman is urbane. He is not fixed to a scenario (like Aquaman or the green lantern), his powers gives him advantages and disadvantages, his normal life is one of the most believable, etc It's the complete opposite of Superman. For instance, even if the MoS had some good ideas, a slight change or mistake can jeopardize everything. For example, if the character at least tried to save people in the middle of the destruction, maybe the public reaction would be more forgivable. Same thing if he spared Zod, knocking him out instead of murder. But none of these things happened and people got crazy. Even if you has some good ideas, some comics tried to implement new ideas, etc.. The character is so naturally limited, he has such a fragile buble around him, that would be hard to make him interesting at this point. The "what if" stories of Superman are considered more interesting because they broke these limits. Red Son, Injustice, allstar superman, etc. If you maintain the signature of the character (boyscout to a point of naiveness, humble origin, forced patriotism, invulnerability, etc) its just hard to make him interesting. These aspects could be applied in the 40's, but now? Its just hard man.
Rest in peace Richard Donner. Thank you for inspiring us all and bringing the man of steel to life with energy and style that to this is day is fun and inspiring. You'll be missed.
I understand the point the kid made, but it sort of misses the point of Superman. Batman is the character who takes the worst of the generation and tries to do his best with those limits. Superman is the character, the fictional character mind you, who has a few pages of comic strips that save real lives every year. He is an inspiration. He is what the world could be, what the people could be. The kid's suggestion is not that we compromise our hero, but our ideals, to be less then what they were. I don't think we should aim lower just because society has in some ways devolved. I think that's all the more reason to keep aiming high.
That's the thing though, MoS and BvS were building up to that Superman. In MoS, he never had the 12 years of learning Reeve did. He's doing things as a human would, because in his own mind he's still human. And that's what's inspiring about him, is that he in the end sacrifices himself as a human, for a society that hates him. I love Donner and Snyder for different reasons. Donner was the perfect Silver Age Superman, Snyder was the conflicted Post-Crisis Superman.
@@northwindkey yeah but you shouldn't need TWO SEQUELS to make a good representation of a character, because to me, bothe MoS AND BvS failed to portray an interesting character/superman, so it doesn't work as a superman movie and a film neither
"Actually, I really appreciated Kal's value for life being something he has to earn by being forced to take one. As a pantheon of American pop culture, Superman should evolve to reflect society for what it is not what we wish it was." R.I.P The dead people of Metropolis...
Ironic that script written by a pompous adult is being delivered by a child when Superman has always been a boy scout self insert intended for children. Kids don't have a Superman anymore. They have a broody Batman wannabe who's entire movies revolve lecturing people with the pretentious premise of "WHAT IF SUPERHEROES WERE REAL".
Can I say "thank you" for getting the fact that Superman is "time traveling," NOT spinning the Earth backwards! As far as stopping EVERYTHING from happening, I believe Superman was trying to minimize the amount of damage he did to the Time stream.
So when he goes to Lois earlier, is there now him plus his earlier self still fixing dams and bridges? Or when he rejoins the time stream, he just becomes/merges with his earlier self?
Also Zod was human when Superman crushed his hand and threw him into the abyss. Everyone's a hypocrite to say Batman and Superman don't kill. Even in Nolan's Batman he killed those men in the Mountains.
No, they don't count. BvS was crappy with a few good scenes I liked. SS had issues but I could still enjoy for what it was. Any movie made by a committee of suits is a bad idea.
It was less of the neck breaking for me as it was him virtually nuking the entire city. I was already angry about that when the neck breaking scene hit, so I was less likely to forgive it.
+Screen Junkies I'm in #TeamBatman. But that's not fair, i wanna see both, Batman's and Superman's Honest Trailers. Who else is with me for having both Honest Trailers???
"Superman should represent society as it is, not as we'd like it to be." Um, NO. Superman is always our better. Superman is the goodness that we should all aspire to be. Superman isn't about 'society as it exists in the current state' Superman is about inspiring society, no matter what state it is in, to be better, to be more caring, more compassionate, more open minded, and more honest. Superman does not need to be updated, modernized, or contemporary. Superman just needs to be Superman.
You're missing the fact that acsuperman existing in a real world will get backlash and there's no way a guy can take all that for months and maybe years and still smile about it. That's just NOT HUMAN
"Actually I really appreciate Kal’s value for like being something he has to earn by having to take one..." Yes....I know that I only started to value people's lives after I murdered someone. Makes sense.
The Superman movies were incredibly inspiring to me as a kid. I could only realize how campy and weird they were just recently... and I gotta say: I would trade all the badass action in the world for an awe-inspiring John Williams theme anyday.
Gotta say, I respect Honest Trailer's decision to put logical reason why Man of Steel is an objectively better film by having an intelligent child make the comparison. It really goes to show the blinding power of nostalgia googles and some of the unjust criticisms given to Man of Steel. "Out of the mouths of babes"
***** No, a God with unfathomable power has to kill someone to learn the value of life, even if that life was a monster whose sole purpose became to kill every person on earth. Despite that being the only possible way for it to end, it still crumbles him, given us a glimpse of this true vulnerability. A child can grasp that but you can't?

@Black Ninja How about knocking zod out and take him to the fortress and see if jor el has smt to take his powers away or smt?
Exactly man. I mean shouldn't he know that killing people is wrong after so many years?
@@johnwinchesterp2963 He tried that. Levelled half of Metropolis in the process. How much more would you have him destroy?
@@RickReasonnz Dude the only reason this didn't work is because the writers wanted to have superman kill zod. No other reason. Superman could have knocked out zod.

No one turned him into batman

"Hi."
Christopher Reeves, 1978
Christopher Reeve, bless his soul, is the quintessential Superman. Simply the best.

Same dude, that's what I've been saying for years. Spider-Man is the best!
I both agree and disagree with you. XD
+h0m3st4r Wrong, recently Spiderman is the CEO of his own global company. He is a rich guy now selling tech to the whole world. Not only that, peter is a known scientist. so he is pretty smart.
In other words he is kinda tony stark now.

"Superman should reflect what society is not what we wish it was"
After a very stressful day of work, let's all sitback and watch a movie that reminds us of how stressful our day is.
What a way to relax.
how does a Superman movie makes it feel like a stressful day?
your kid is smart, too smart for his own good.

2:19 “She is a perfectly sane person.”🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
"As a pantheon of American pop culture, Superman should evolve to reflect society as it is, not what we wish it was"
That there defeats the entire premise of the character.
+VenomShock Superman is supposed to represent ideals, not pop culture. He's not Deadpool.
Memorable? Yes. Compelling? No.
*****
Well, if we consider only the movies, the portrayal of Doc Ock in Spiderman 2 was just perfect.

Society never devolved; I'm still living a good life!

Because they came after the thing Jor-El gave him?
What should he have done? The whole planet was in danger.
Say "I don't like sand. It's course and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere."
@@billc5378 I don't know. I have wondered that myself.
this is why multiverse and time travel storylines are dumb though i have enjoyed then often without wanting to.
The kid is wrong, though. Superman is meant to be an ideal. He shows us what we could be, what we should be, not what we are.
Could not agree more. Perfectly put.

This is the best Superman movie and Christopher Reeve was the best Superman ever!
He kills Zod in Superman II. Throwing him in an ice pit is OK but breaking his neck is not?
Also Zod was human when Superman crushed his hand and threw him into the abyss. Everyone's a hypocrite to say Batman and Superman don't kill. Even in Nolan's Batman he killed those men in the Mountains.
Richard Lester's theatrical release is the one that counts. So Richard Donner's cut is null and void.
No, they don't count. BvS was crappy with a few good scenes I liked. SS had issues but I could still enjoy for what it was. Any movie made by a committee of suits is a bad idea.
Deusirae79 actually Zod and his cronies are imprisoned in the after credits scene
It was less of the neck breaking for me as it was him virtually nuking the entire city. I was already angry about that when the neck breaking scene hit, so I was less likely to forgive it.

"Superman should represent society as it is, not as we'd like it to be."
Um, NO.

"Actually I really appreciate Kal’s value for like being something he has to earn by having to take one..."
Yes....I know that I only started to value people's lives after I murdered someone. Makes sense.
The Superman movies were incredibly inspiring to me as a kid. I could only realize how campy and weird they were just recently... and I gotta say: I would trade all the badass action in the world for an awe-inspiring John Williams theme anyday.

So, according to you a Superman movie shouldn't have fight scenes then?
@DejaVoodooDoll nope. A Superman is more than both of those things. And that's what he is in bvs. He fights , he saves, he gives people HOPE
One of the best things about these films is Margot Kidder. She is the best Lois.
