I don't think the 1978 or it's first sequel have aged poorly at all. Yes, the special effects don't hold up, but acting, story, character development, etc. They completely hold up.
I think the effects look fine.
The practical special effects are all en pointe. Some of the VFX are still very cool, especially the scenes where Superman is fixing the fault line. So badass to me, I love it. He is my Superman and so far he always will be. No one has done the role justice since as a whole. Clark Kent, Superman, his actions his demeanor. It was all perfect
@@joshuastroupe1999 What about out of curiosity Tom Welling?
WRONG!!! The SFX hold up very well! Much better than today's CGI nonsense!
Bob Blueford Not all cgi is bad.
Christopher Reeves will always be "Superman" in my eyes.
Reeve
in all eyes. :)
I agree with you Christopher Reeve Superman I was born in 1978 when the movie first came out and till this day Christopher Reeve is my hero still I hate the new dark tone of Superman Christopher Reeve Superman is still the big blue boyscout in my heart till I die ❤️
Same here too 🤙🏽
100 % agree
Christopher Reeve as Superman is exactly how I imagined reading the comic books
Not the Golden Age DC Superman... Late Silver Age and Bronze Ageup to the mid 80's seems to be the inspiration for Donner's first 2 films for sure.
Paul Walsh stfu
@@paulwalsh2344 Bronze Age Superman wasn't really a thing until around the Crisis of Infinite Earths storyline.
Wow
how gave the thumbs up
The special effects were great for their time but it was Christopher Reeve's portrayal of Superman/Clark Kent that made it work. He was a VERY good actor.
For me he was a good Superman but his Clark Kent was cartoonish.
He has no equal still to this day no actor can hold a tortch to his portrayal of Superman. I hope they have a sample of his blood so can clone him one day. He was just that great
A very good actor indeed. He could have been one of the greatest actors ever if his accident didn't happen. In Superman the Movie he's the only person who makes a lot of differences between Clark and Superman, more than just a pair of glasses and a different hairstyle. And in the scene in which Superman leaves Lois just to appear 25 seconds later as Clark was made in one shot with no film editing. That means that in 25 seconds Reeve left Kidder, went backstage, changed his clothes, his hair, entered in the character of Clark and appeared in scene without looking tired at all. 25 seconds!
And we can see this deep understanding and performances in any other of his movies (my personal favorite one is Somewhere in Time... That final performance... wow). Even in the set of Superman producers said he was a better actor than Brando and Hackman.
A final fun fact is how he appeared publicly as Superman and everybody recognized him and asked for autograpghs. 10 minutes later he appeared as Clark and no one at all knew who he was.
Good is an understatement. He was beyond amazing. He played the part flawlessly. Almost like God sent him to earth just for this role
John J. Rambo completely truth... such a great loss, and not just in talent, which he had an enormous amount, but also for the great person he was... at least he can walk again and next to Robin Williams, his best friend in the world
Christopher Reeve plus the 1978 Superman theme song makes it difficult to ever top! RIP Chris ❤️
Nominated for three Academy Awards.
The greatest music ever (at least for me).
@@bobblueford Me, too, Bob. When I watch any other version of Superman since Reeve, I always hear that theme song playing, even when producers decide not to incorporate it in their productions.
@@algallego Same here, anytime Supes shows up, i hear the Reeve tune. They actually did sort of have it in "The Justice League", it kinda made me happy.
That's why they continue to use John Williams theme. It is, in my opinion, the greatest movie theme he's ever done. Which is saying something when he's had so many. Like Star Wars, Jaws and Harry Potter. He has a knack for making music that fits the movie.
Christopher Reeves is the best superman so far.
FOREVER!!!
Always and forever
George Reeves. Christopher Reeve. ;)
Not "so far," by far.
@@Kermit_T_Frog Ya never know, there may yet be an actor who surpasses Reeve, but it's highly unlikely to be honest; he's gonna be an extremely tough act to follow.

Christopher Reeve projects an inherently kind vibe. The only Super-hero who is always polite, civic, compassionate, engages with others sincerely and is not sarcastic, and has this happy-puppy look though he has the powers of a god. Reeve portrays Superman as one who is for all.
i would love to have a poster of christopher reeve as superman
Yeah, he comes across as genuine with real emotion.
right on the money great comment
Helen Slater had the same vibe as Supergirl. Doe like, kind, polite, but could also kick ass. Admittedly she was in a far more inferior film, but her portrayal and casting was spot on.
Exactly. I just saw a pic of HC and he looks mad almost and Reeve is SO restrained you can always see he's the ULTIMATE BOY SCOUT... He made a real performance out of a superhero.
Christopher is the standard!!
Nothing corny about Truth, Justice, and the American way!!
He can be equaled but never topped. Set the bar too high..
There is something corny about the American way, especially with your dumbass president.
@@dabadguy7882 The American Way is an ideal not a specific person. Just read the Declaration of Independence, US Constitution, and Bill of Rights to know what that ideal is.
@@ChildOL the american way is to lie about ideals but implement atrocities in practice??? Humans are equal except theyre not?

Proud to say I got to meet Reeve at a convention about 1 year before his accident. He was definitely a class act. After speaking to a room full of people and answering questions he then took the time talking and taking pictures with each and everyone wrapped around the room. He didn't get in any hurry and talked to everyone as though they were his best friend. There was no charge for autographs and I cherish mine to this day. I looked up to him as a kid and still do today.
There's this intense kindness about Chris Reeve that as Superman, comes through as warm, friendly and true.
Undeniable. Christopher Reeve was the best Superman. His portrayal was spot on. And no one's liked more like the comic book version. It's as if the crest based his drawing off of C Reeves.
John Byrne, one of the artists who would draw superman for DC comics in the 80's (the best among all who would draw him imo) wrote a column in one of the comics (can't remember N° of issue) in which he explained that when he saw C. Reeve's Superman he actually felts this was how Superman was supposed to look like all along and how he had imagined him all his life. He started drawing his Superman for the comic looking just like Christopher, same face. I think José Luis García López also based his superman (super friends, super powers) on Christopher, and I wouldnt doubt other DC artists did too; so, what you wrote is fact 100%. They all knew who the real Superman was, same as we all know it was Christopher Reeve, gone but never forgotten.

I Agree 100%! Christopher Reeve remains the Definitive Superman/Clark Kent. He just nailed the Look, the Feel & the Heart of the character. And I actually Like Superman's Truth, Justice, and the American Way credo. And he's a Superman who's Charismatic, Relatable & Likable. When Chris Reeve's Superman' around, fans & the audiences feel they are safe.
Five for Fighting's Superman song is perfect for him- essentially, the 1978 Superman was a Marvel style film.
Christopher Reeve was and will always be Superman. He earned that title from life's hard lessons.
Evans' interpretation of Cap is just like Reeves' Superman... they have heart.
You know...I was actually thinking that....since Chris' contract is done for doing Steve Rogers, they might be smart to offer him Superman in a new film. I think he might just be able to do it justice.

Be able to replace Superman as far as Christopher Reeve
I was just looking up the source material for Wonder Woman. The "Bullets and Bracelets" competition was there from the start in 1942, maybe called "Weapons and Bracelets" as it used to be done with arrows. Why would they take that away in _Wonder Woman 1918_ to dishonor the source material? The sooner we end the Snyderverse and start again fresh, the better.
True.. Christopher Reeves was not only the best Superman on screen but off-screen too - the strength and spirit with which he faced his last days is a true inspiration. RIP Christopher Reeves!
Christopher Reeves is an icon he now soars in the heavens!
Reeve
@@A1Authority lmao! Keep telling them, Don!
When Siegel and Shuster met Christopher Reeve in Heaven they must have given him a huge hug and thanked him for bringing their genius creation to life. Growing up in the late 70’s and 80’s Christopher Reeve defined my favorite hero and defined heroism. I miss him, and society sorely misses the type of hero movie Richard Donner deftly gave us.
SUPERMAN IS CHRISTOPHER REEVE
The idea that "truth, justice, and the American way" are "old fashioned " is everything that is wrong with America.
Like Agent Coulson said, "old fashioned may be just what we need."
But this is correct. Chris Reeve is the best Superman ever.
Hence why Captain America is the best character in marvel, even liked by non americans
"The American way" is an arrogant and xenophobic concept. Coming from a literal illegal alien - something which is demonised in America, is hugely ironic.
@@Syklonus - Nothing arrogant or xenophobic about it. Superman/Clark Kent is a legal U.S. citizen.
@@Syklonus You're totally wrong here, Libby. Superman is first, and foremost, "American made". He was raised in the American mid-west by a
patriotic/ American root couple. And although Superman would defend much of the free world, he's still an American citizen who's not arrogant;
but "proud" of his patriotism and love for the USA.
p.s. You far left millennials kill me.
@@LATVERIAN1 I agree. I think patriotism is essential. While Superman protects the world, America is still his home because he was raised there. PS: I’m a conservative millennial. It’s shocking, but we do exist.

A slightly good looking...are you kidding me?
Can I tell you ALL THE WOMEN inside the cinema audience LITERALLY were GUSHING AND SWOONING seeing Superman holding Lois hand flying up at the night skies?

This is not "sarcasm"; it's a facetious understatement. And in this context, it's very poorly placed: worst part of this otherwise very good video.
Right?! Christopher Reeve was gorgeous!
Chris Evan's Captain America Got the feel Of Reeves' Superman right.
Maybe they should have cast Chris Evans as the Man of Steel.
He bears a much more striking resemblance to Christopher Reeve than Brandon Routh
Yes, that's why Capatain America from Marvel is my favorite character from the films, he reminds me of Reeves Superman
He definitely has the selfless hero mixed with the "Aw shucks" every-man.

Reeve is the epitome, as Lynda Carter is to Wonder Woman.
Exactly! When I first saw ads for the WW remake (Gal Gadot) I actually thought they were bringing Xena back, didn't even recognize her as WW. But I get that they had to completely rebuild the costume and the character to minimize the inevitable comparison to Lynda Carter as WW. (plus Gadot could never have, uh, properly fit into Carter's WW costume.)
I think Reeve would have liked Brandon Routh's Superman... not so sure he would have liked Cavill's (nothing against Cavill himself). Superheroes are not supposed to be dark and brooding, they are supposed to represent light and goodness and hope for what humanity can aspire to be. Superhero movies are supposed to be an escape from the dark realities of the world, not a depressing magnification of them.
JM S 😍👍😍👍
You said it perfectly!
@@MarkovianMan well damn! You said a mouth full on point wit it!👍
I'll always love Lynda Carter as wonder woman
I’d say it’s a tie, Carter DEFINITELY had the look and filled the costume well and was the closest in looks to the comic book, but Gal nailed the spirit of the character, was more athletic and with her accent you believed she was from a different land. She was also great at showing a naïveté about the outside world.
Christopher Reeve is SUPERMAN #enufsaid.
Christopher Reeve's Clark Kent is still the best!!

Christopher Reeve Superman Forever
Christopher Reeve is the best superman ever for all the right reasons. I especially liked that when he started he was a humbled boy and not a hyped up project. that's what I like less hype and more performance with a great team and portrayal
Well said!! He still is the gold standard!! So good that now the comic books make Superman look like him!!!
"In many respects, these film have aged poorly" - Not the first one. That movie is pure cinematic perfection. Even if I don't strikes you as such, give it another watch!
Hackman's Luthor was the weakest part of the movie. Gene is a great actor, but they wrote the character to be completely ridiculous. It's hard to reconcile his plans of mass-murder with the slapstick interactions he has with his entourage. I think the movie would have been stronger if Luthor was written with more gravitas.
Greatest superhero film ever made.
Thank you for saying it so well! I grew up in the 80's watching a Superman who wouldn't let a bus flip over without expressing remorse! He genuinely cared. Christopher Reeve was the perfect role model.
Christopher Reeve + John Williams theme = lightning in a bottle. Pretty hard to equal let alone surpass.

Watching Superman 1 in the 80's when I was a kid I asked my dad if Superman was using a jetpack under the cape to fly (I had watched Rocketeer some days before); he answered: "sure son, sure..." - lol, what a goof
@@fedegibsonlespaul They originally tried to make it scientific, like saying he had greater flesh-density and musculature from being born on Krypton. Superman didn't originally fly, but would leap about like the Hulk. Then they decided he could fly, which sounds like Kryptonian magic.
@@sandal_thong8631 Oh, I know all the lore, I actually meant how they were making an actor fly in the movie
Yes! I remember Reeve's Superman getting really worried about the city and all the people in it (Superman II), so when I saw Cavill's Superman jumping the trailer like "I don't care if it explodes or kills some people or destroyes the building", well... I really thought Reeve's Superman is the hero.
And on top of it all, his fight to stay alive and champion others after his devastating accident made him an actual hero. Rest in peace, dear Christopher Reeve.
I agree wholeheartedly, superman should be an ideal and always truly good. Hated cavill's brooding bloodthirsty interpretation. RIP Christopher Reeves.. you are still sorely missed.
Man of Steel's Cavill had the look, but not the feel. Could have been great. But wasn't. Superman always strikes me as the big blue boy scout, and an always hopeful figure. An ideal to strive towards. That is why in the comics, even other great heroes strive to be like him. Not because of his power, but rather because of the ideal he represents.
Ironically this is the kind of hero modern society needs to be exposed to desperately.
Cavil had potential, but was wasted on poor direction and a bland script. Given better circumstances and a director who wasn't ashamed of the character, he could have been amazing. As it is, Man of Steel and BvS was utter dogshit.
Never blame the actor for the plot of a film.
yes, let's just have some perfect boy scout in the movie who nobody can relate to lol, instead of a realistic portrait of a man who has struggles like everyone else, what's so interesting about a perfect super hero?
@@TheWartechgaming I think you are missing the point.

I been watching the Superman Trilogy since I was really young. Christopher Reeve became my favorite actor who ever played the "Man of Steel" on the big screen since 1978. We all miss him playing Superman.
I don't want to watch _Superman III_ or _Superman IV_ again except for scenes with Lana, his high school crush. But I do consider _Supergirl_ a good follow-up to _Superman II._

The REAL Superman both in movies and real life!!!
Great and spot on review of just how great Reeve was at portraying Superman, girl! Christopher always played Supes with charm unmatched by anyone else! That was fantastic in so much as you stated why Reeve is still the Golden Standard for Superman-- couldn't agree more. Minus the camp, anyone else since has failed to become and portray the essence of the character on screen for movie fans since Reeve.
I remember Christopher's first Superman film was the first Super hero film I saw when I was only six. He has since been my favourite actor for my favourite hero.
Christopher Reeve is the one and only Superman. As wholesome in real life as his onscreen character. Christopher Reeve's Superman is the measure that all the others will always be measured to. In the movies and in real life, Christopher Reeve was indeed Superman.
Geez, I had no idea the Superman 1978 film series was that old. Until a week ago. Since the fifth film came out in 2006, I expected the film series to be much newer. I was like 'The 1978 film series? No that's not what I'm after. I'm looking for the one dating from my childhood'. Only to discover that such a series didn't exist.
I think in 2006, I took a look at the cover of one of the 70's or 80's films. And I remember looking at Superman and thinking 'Man, he's really got that Tobey Maguire look going!' I remember looking at the cover of the 2006 Superman and couldn't help but feel that this guy didn't look like the Superman that I remembered from the other cover that I remembered seeing. Much less did he look like Tobey Maguire.
I'm not entirely sure which Superman is the best one. As the only one that I've seen is the 2006 Superman, which I watched in 2007. But from what little I've seen, the 1978 Superman remains to be the most iconic. It really is a shame that Christopher Reeve died. Though Brandon Routh is a superb replacement. And Christopher definitely would have been too old to play Superman again, had he still been alive by the time the 2006 Superman was filmed.

I don't put any of the other actors down saying this when I say Chris is my favorite Superman. Plus, I don't see how Superman's sense of justice is corny at all. I also view him as a great sense of escapism from many problems in our world. Just because we have them doesn't mean that we need them in every story. I should also say in comparison to 3:38 - :41, Chris looks more natural when he says it by looking concerned for Lois since she had a scary experience. And the effects still look good like many of the new ones.
Chris was the best special effect, HE made you believe he was flying.

RIP Christopher Reeve you will always be superman we love you and miss you number 1 superman
Christopher Reeve is the last great live-action
Superman. I agree with most everything you
mentioned. Although there are two things I'd
like to address:
1) The 1978 Superman "uniform" has never been
dated. It is what it should be; bright, optimistic,
and a faithful adaption straight from the comics.
It never needed to be "updated". Mostly, having it
darkened was one of the worst mistakes possible.
Batman is dark & brooding. Superman is the com-
plete opposite.
2) The nostalgic line of "Truth, Justice, and the American
Way" isn't outdated. It represents exactly who Superman
is. Here's here to protect the world. But first, and foremost,
Superman is American made. And patriotism for one's
country should never seem corny. And when Superman (Reeve)
says it, it still comes across as pure, honest, & convincing.
