  • We're taking a look at one of the smallest, and most affordable new cars for sale in Canada today, the 2019 Chevrolet Spark 2LT CVT.
    While this wasn't the car we booked, we ended up spending a bit of time with the 2019 Chevrolet Spark. Cars like this seem to be more popular in Europe, but here in Québec they're also good options for people looking for a new car and don't have a huge budget.
    Our full tour and review of the 2019 Spark goes over the plethora of features found on this vehicle, such as projector halogen headlights, backup camera, rear parking sensors, doors, a windshield, tires, & a roof. We go inside the surprisingly spacious Spark to talk about it's 7" Chevy infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, & SiriusXM Radio, along with the leatherette seating, heated front seats, air conditioning, and sunroof.
    We then take the Spark through the city to see how it performs as a City Car with it's 98 horsepower naturally aspirated inline 4 engine, and if it can keep up with traffic on one of Montréal's busiest highways. We also wrap-up up our thoughts on this vehicle without going into specific likes and dislikes as we normally do on TestDrive Spotlight.

    I just got this car yesterday. They are selling like hot hotcakes. There was only one dealer left with my car and they had to bring it to me. I love it so much! Major upgrade from my Jeep. Seems odd but I prefer the spark much more! The ride is so much smoother and the speakers are AWESOME! The speakers were my main concern when buying a cheap car but I was super shocked. I thought I was gonna hate this car and I ended up loving it.

    98 HP for that thing is a lot. I can remember when most full size cars had about 100 hp back in the day. We had a 1975 Mercedes Diesel 300 that weighed about 3400 lbs and produced 114 HP. It went from 0-60 in about 20 seconds. That was plenty fast enough for everyday driving. The first generation Honda Civics had 52 HP. The first generation Toyota Tercel had 60 HP. Hell, even the mid '70s Corvette stingray produced only 165 HP.
    People today are spoiled. They don't know what is needed and what is just numbers they have gotten used to seeing.

    I just bought my 2019 Chevy Spark LS in April and I love it. I'm not as big or tall as you so I fit in it perfectly. I have also seen many more on the road since I bought mine. You kept saying it's a beginner car but your wrong about that. It's meant to save on gas and still go just like normal sized cars. At my age and owning and driving all kinds of cars, I gotta say, the Spark is fast becoming my favorite.

    Somehow managed to snag a 2018 1LT for around 9 grand brand new! Apparently they wanted them off the lot for the 2019's coming in. Absolute great car for that price especially with the 3 year bumper to bumper warranty and 5 year on the engine and transmission. So if you can find a good deal its actually a really great car! But loading it up with leather for 20K is definitely a bad purchase, better off getting a used car.
    Although i cant say i wouldnt want leather and heated seats, but not for that much extra.
    Anyways got 14,000km on it and so far holding up nice!

      I'm glad you liked the resolution! We've filmed maybe half a dozen 4K episodes over the past 15 months, unfortunately our main production camera only does 1080p, and 4K footage taxes our editing rig significantly. I'd love to make the jump to it permanently, but even a better 1080p camera at this time is out of our budget.

    I love my Spark. Owned it for almost 2 years now. The CVT definitely slows the car down in the low range but very peppy beyond 40mph. I think there's some computer efficiency work intentionally forcing the car not to rev high when pushing the throttle initially. Unlike in Canada, the Spark doesn't sell at all here, so I was able to score it for like 35% off MSRP (under 10k OTD for base CVT which does have windy windows). Keep in mind though that the max weight recommended is about 670lbs, so definitely not a car for someone who is heavy and wants to have passengers. Have a few friends who weigh more than 300lbs and definitely could notice the car's suspension not handling that weight well (close to 900lbs altogether). Usually I drive slow over good roads whenever I hang out with them to not screw up the shocks.
    BTW how tall are you? I'm 6'2" and I am nowhere near hitting the roof of mine. My BFF is 6'5" and also doesn't have any issues.

    ours here in new Zealand are branded as holdens, mine has 7000km's on it now(2020 lt). i check gas use every fill, and can say with my rural and city driving, i average 5.9 liters / 100 kms(40 mpg us or 48 mpg uk).
    I love it, and use it as my preferred car, even though i have a 2020 astra rsv , and a nissan ute etc as well. I find it surprises a lot of folk, with how quick it is. They were $23,000 here, but when holden stopped trading, i managed to pick mine up for $14,000 nz (new), amazing value in my opinion.

    Please note that for some people, particularly us city-dwellers, SIZE is a critical consideration. I live in NYC and can afford any car I want, but I do not have a garage. I DO, however, have 140" long area in front of my brownstown I can use as a parking space IF I can find a car small enough to fit! This Chevy fits the bill, so to speak. It's also A LOT easier to park on our busy streets.

    Spark: Better looking, handling, speed, ammenities, better dealer network

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  5 лет назад +1

      I mean the Spark does have 3 seat belts back there, in theory you could legally get 3 people back there. Just how comfortable it would be is going to depend on how big each person is. For a quick trip it shouldn't be too bad, on top of the lowered fuel economy since the vehicle will be weighed down a bit.

I really don't see the point of buying a 2LT for 20K$ when for that much you can get a 2016 CLA250 or Audi A3 with under 50K km for that much, if not less.

    If you absolutely need a new car, you really don't have to punish yourself with a city car. For 18k, you can have a 2019 Kia Forte with heated seats, heated leather steering wheel, AC, power everything, cruise control, 8inch infotainment with Android Auto/Apple Car play so basically a much bigger, much more comfortable and surprisingly (well not really) more efficient car (avg of 6.4L/100k). Add in good their leasing rates and you can easily get one for less than 200$/month, even more with a little bit of haggling. And let's be honest, you don't really need a city car in Quebec. Even in downtown MTL or Québec City, a compact car is very well suited and if you're not capable of driving a compact car in the city, maybe you should consider walking ;)

    right now you can get a base LS for under 10K plus freight. That is a bargain.

    This or a Mirage?

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  3 года назад +1

      I'd take this, only because the Mirage is a miserable car that I can't fit into. Years before starting TestDrive on this channel I was doing written car reviews, the Mirage was one I drove but couldn't drive comfortably as my head was touching the headliner.

      I suppose so. Back when GM was selling these I have to imagine the lease/finance rates were competitive enough to make it appealing over a used vehicle, especially at the same price point. I'll admit I saw a Spark RS a couple days ago that looked pretty cute.

    This car doesn't need 4 doors. it would look better and sell better if it had just two doors I mean, who wants to be the person relegated to the backseat of this thing?

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 года назад +2

      It's a wonder why these city cars only come with 4 doors here. The older Golf 2 doors are all over the place here, I think having the option would be good for buyers who really only plan on using it for themselves.

    I don’t understand this review. The size of a car does not change the pieces of a car. There is just as much to talk about a small car as there is about a larger car.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  5 лет назад +2

      What’s there to not understand? Did I miss some important feature about it? Did we overlook a major aspect of the Spark just because the runtime of this episode was 9 minutes instead of 22?

    • @TobyMichaelPortableTechReview
      @TobyMichaelPortableTechReview 5 лет назад +4

      It has nothing to do with the run time. It has to do with the fact that I don’t feel the vehicle was given a fair shake in the sense that you were constantly saying there’s nothing to talk about because it’s so small and laughing about the horse power. The size of the doors or the hood should not change the fair representation of someone that represents them self as a reviewer of automobiles.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  5 лет назад +1

      Aside from the placement of the door handles, I don’t think I mentioned anything about the doors, their size, or the hood. I’m not going to embellish and sugarcoat like other RUclips Channels, this car doesn’t offer a lot to discuss, and my episode reflects that. It’s a small car, it has very little power, I’m not quite sure what you expected coming into this episode, considering I presented it the way I saw it.

    • @TobyMichaelPortableTechReview
      @TobyMichaelPortableTechReview 5 лет назад +7

      @@PRNTestDrive I mentioned the size of the doors and the hood because that's what you immediately refer to is the diminutive size of the car in general. My point is every car has the same parts. If you're going to review a car's interior exterior tail lights headlights performance wheels engine transmission all of those things are fair and relative to all vehicles. I was just sharing my opinion that the car should have been approached the same as any other vehicle that you review. Obviously you feel you approached it from a fair standpoint and that's fine I'm just one person sharing my opinion.

    so ugly and so little vertical space, my car is only 20 cm longer but despite your same height, between 8 and 13 cm are left for headroom depending on seat position.
    and probably a little bit quicker.
    for very compact car ask european or asian brands, i think that American cars where never good in this segment

      I'm surprised GM is holding onto this while killing off almost all their other sedans/hatches. I don't think GM's engineers had people like me in mind when developing this bad boy.
