So if you take the on line ELDT only to upgrade to a class A! Do you still need to pay for a school to do on road or can a person with class a be qualified to do that?
It doesn’t have to be a school, but whoever you use has to be listed on the training provider registry. There are some individuals that are on that list.
I’m looking to renew my class b cdl i had over 13 years but it was taken away due to i wasn’t driving and didn’t renew before Feb 2022..Do i need to do the eldt training to reinstate my cdl class b??
No, if you are looking to reinstate the same Class B that your previously held but has since lapsed, you should not be required to take ELDT. Check out FMCSA’s fact sheet here: tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov/content/Resources/ELDT-Applicability-Factsheet_rev_508.pdf
This process is very confusing. Can someone explain the process for some interested in getting a CDL B? Do I sign up with a provider, study with them, then go to the DMV to take the knowledge test? And the start the behind the wheel training?
We would recommend you first find a registered trainer near you and ask them how they prefer you start the process. In most cases, you’ll need your CLP before you take the behind the wheel portion.
I have a question! I already have my CDL class A since 2018, and I add an endorsement with passenger endorsement, now I want to add a school endorsement and take a driving test for school bus. My question is Do I need to take the ELDT training course even though I took my class A 4 years ago with my passenger endorsement?
I need some info. I need to get my class b with hazmat and tankers endorsement . For my job I'm a mobile mechanic. I live in California. So do I do the eldt first then go to the DMV and then. Go get my back ground check for hazmat. I'm confused what order does it go.
Find a training provider first and they’ll let you know what order you need to do stuff. Most do the theory portion of ELDT first, then you go to the DMV and take the knowledge test to get your CLP, then take your behind-the-wheel ELDT.
So, I used to have hazmat, and tanker.... on april I went to renew my licence found out that i had to take the test on the computer for hazmat they did not provide endorsement test at the DMV i went to, so I had to drop my hazmat... do i still need to complete the ELDT? TO GET MY HAZMAT BACK?
Okay, we received a response back from the DOT on this topic. They indicated that if you previously held a hazmat endorsement prior to 2/7/22, you do NOT need to take ELDT to get that hazmat endorsement reinstated now, even if you don't currently have that endorsement.
I have my CDL for 14 years I had hazmat endorsement then was expired in 2018 now I went to DMV tried to take the test they told me I have to take the ELDT training I thought the first DMV didn’t know what they were doing then I wen to a second one and they told me the same thing I even showed them my old CDL with the hazmat endorsement still refused to let me take the test
How long after I complete training can I take my hazmat test? Do I have to wait a certain amount of time before I will be allowed to take the skills test?
to be able to take my cdl permit test at a dmv, do i have to have both behind the wheel and theory eldt certification or can i just do theory eldt certification in order to be able to take the test?
so then just for my commercial learner permit i would just need the theory and after i obtain it my learners permit, then i can do the behind the wheel training portion to qualify for my skills test?
@@Trucksafe im following, im looking into gettin my X and doubles/triples. Do this new rule bypass me having to go to the dmv to take the hazmat test or it will allow me to take the test once i finish this new training?

Yes, you’ll need to take the hazmat theory portion of ELDT to get that endorsement now. You should be able to find a provider online at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov.
Yes, the theory portion of ELDT a an be taken online. If you search for a training provider at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov, you can filter the results to show online providers.
Yes, the FMCSA has since clarified that previous holders of the hazmat endorsement does not qualify under the grandfathering, so you’ll need to take the theory portion of ELDT to get your hazmat.
Question : I got my permit at DMV , and wasn't aware about this new rule. Was ready to take my skill driving test when found out , that now DMV has to receive a letter from ELDT provider first..That i would be able to take skill test. Called provider. They all saying i have to take full course now THEORY and Behind The Wheel , and pay them 4-5k depends on a school. So 1 month ago i could've just take the test...? And now i need to take full course at school and pay 4-5k even tho i have a permit already ..? Is that correct?
Yes, if you would have obtained your permit prior to Feb. 7, you could have avoided the new training requirement. You’ll now have to take the theory and BTW course in order to take your skills test. There are thousands of registered training providers, including some online, so shop around for the best price.
@@Trucksafe But it has to be a school ? Or could be some certified individual ? I know i can pass theory Online. How about BTW part ? Have to go to school ? Or can find someone privately who is licensed? Because schools will want you to take full course and pay them for all program.
Really no secret to it…use your experience to develop an outline and content that follows the mandatory curriculum we linked in our last comment. Also there are some groups that resell training materials. SambaSafety is one.
Did you obtain your permit and endorsements prior to February 7th? If so, you’d be exempt from the entry-level training requirement. If not, you’d have to obtain that training.
Ok I’m a little confused. I have had my CDL since November 2018. I saw this rule and I’m currently scheduled for an appointment for the hazmat test. Since I have had my CDL before the start of this rule, do I need the ELDT training for hazmat or can I walk in and take the exam without it?
Question: I downgraded like 3 years ago my CDL to DL. Now I want to get my CDL back in another state(TX). Do I have to do ELDT training or I'm considered as a first time CDL applicant?
So Since I got my CDL B before feb 7 2022 I don’t need to take that training to upgrade to an A ? , before you guys say what the picture says , my question is, since it does say “ someone upgrading from B to A “ but then at the bottom it says “ if you already had a CDL before feb 7 2022 then none of this applies to you “ am i understanding correctly or ?
( The ELDT requirements apply to individuals who obtain a commercial learner’s permit (CLP) on or after February 7, 2022.) What they mean by this ? My permit was before fab 7
You can do the theory portion online. Just search for an online provider at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov. The behind the wheel portion obviously has to be completed in person.
Is ELDT training required if you're going for a Class B but none of the endorsements that's required for it? Right now I'm in the process of my CDL but I can't pass the driving portion. I passed everything else. Air Brake, Pre-Trip etc. But struggling with driving. But anyways. My permit expired Jan 2, 2023 and when I renew it I'm only going for a B license but only the regular General Knowledge and Air Brakes. No passenger, school bus or hazmat. Will I still have to do ELDT?
This is so confusing, I am trying to get my CLP by giving an exam for class A, do I need this ELDT training certificate before in order to sit for permit test ?
I'm so confused. Do I have to go to a full on trucking school now? I can pass all the written test. What's the cheapest and fastest way to get my behind the wheel?
Truck school is not mandatory. What is mandatory is the ELDT training. Search for a training provider online at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov and find a provider that works well for you.
@@Trucksafe hey in another comment you said you need a road test certificate is that true or can I just do the online program and go rent a truck and take my skill test if I feel like I’m ready
Yes. You can get a Commercial Learners Permit before taking your ELDT by passing a knowledge test at your local BMV. In most cases you’ll need the permit before you take the behind the wheel portion of your ELDT so you can do the training on public highways.
I would check those again to make sure you’re looking at the GVWR and not the GVW. Most 40 ft trailers I have seen have a GVWR of somewhere around 26k by themselves

All I need is hazmat endorsement! I’ve been driving a class A for 30 years, but now I need hazmat for the first time. Can it be all done online? And what do I need to do? So confusing. Help.
Yes, the hazmat training can all be done online. Search for an online provider at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov. Complete the training then you’ll be good to take your knowledge test to get the endorsement.
I'm still trying to figure out why the FMCSA website itself says these new rules are not retroactive and those who obtained a CDL-Permit (CLP) before Feb 7th 2022 and get their CDL without letting the CLP expire are not required to go through ELDT.......but yet here in Indiana I've taken my hazmat endorsement knowledge exam already, got my TSA fingerprints, and can't get my hazmat because they want me to take a class!!!! Then I want to drive our church bus and need to add a passenger endorsement, which there is no clarification on if I need both theory and behind the wheel, just theory, or neither because I already have my CDL-A. Too confusing and no one seems to have answers.
It's my understanding that the CLP grandfathering only applies to the base CDL, not any endorsements you're seeking to add. So in other words, if you had a CLP prior to Feb 7, you wouldn't have to take the training to get a Class A or B CDL, but you would have to take the training to add an endorsement. Seems backwards, but that's how it seems to be.
This Thursday I will test with the DMV that comes to our school, I'm currently training for my class A. I need all your support hit me up. I will post a video of my certification and then I will head over to the DMV in Elk Grove Village and get the paper print or the actual ID 🤔 I will schedule 📅 an appointment for pre enrolment process for Hazmat Endorsement.
So I pass my class A on the 15 of march 2022 and had already took all my endorsements hazmat tankers school bus in 2022 do I still need to go through this rule or program .pls help anyone
I had a cdl class b i lost privilege due to not blowing in a dui stop. I fought and won have no conviction of dui. I didn't get to go back and get my cdl endorsement. I read this is for people that have never had a cdl or is for people who are going from a B to an A. Can some tell me if this means i don't need to do it. I got hired by a new company February 28th i went and got my permit and they just told me about this new rule of eldt. And now they are saying i either got to pay $4,500 for classes or i will lose this job even though they knew i had no cdl.
The FMCSA hasn’t provided much clarity on your specific question. Their guidance says that if you held a CDL of the same or higher class prior to 2/7 (even if your CDL is not currently valid) you are exempt from the new training requirement. That guidance is at this link: tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov/FAQ/Topics/applicability-exceptions. What’s not clear is if that is true for CDLs that we’re downgraded or revoked in the past.
@@Trucksafe thanks for answering my question im going to dmv Monday to retrieve proof of my previous cdl and i spoke to 3rd party person who certified my previous after my pre trip and rd test he said he is trying to see if this will work. Ill let you know
My questions are if, I received my Clp before February 7th 2022 which was 2/2/22 but don't have my hazmat endorsement which, I want but my dmv here in Georgia told me. I could not get it until, I finish my cdl class which is April 2nd 2022 will, I still have to take the eldt part? In order to get my hazmat endorsement? Because I have so many people telling me different thing's like the website just says if you have your clp before the 7th then you are not required to do the eldt but it's a bit confusing when also it's says if your getting a endorsement for the first time you need to take the eldt.
Exactly! I'm in the same boat here in Indiana. Trying to get my hazmat and already taken the knowledge exam with the BMV and got my TSA fingerprints approved. But Indiana still won't let me have my endorsement. But I did print out and show them that it's not retroactive and us who have their CLP or CDL before Feb 7th are not required to go through ELDT, to which the BMV showed me two pamphlets that FMCSA gave them to "train" them which was in conflict with this. Crazy they can't figure it out!
You had to obtain your endorsement and license prior to February 7th. Even if you received your permit prior to 02/07/22 the process of the hazmat endorsement had to be final and complete before that date in order for you to no be obligated to take the new Theory class.
Update well the answer to my question is, I had to take eldt class online then go to the dmv to get my endorsement then go to tsa and get my fingerprints so now. I'm all set if you never had any endorsements as of H,S or P you had to get it before February 7th 2022 as the same rules applies for a clp or cdl.
Tasha, same advice I got as well. Had to take an online course, which was to prepare me to take the knowledge test I already passed! So was a bit backwards, but that struggle was only to prepare me for my current struggle of attempting to get the passenger endorsement to drive our church bus. Have to take in person ELDT and on the road training, but no one offers it around me!!!! Closest place I found was 4 hours away, a week long, and $900!!!!!! Absolutely ridiculous when I already have an unrestricted class A CDL and am not driving the bus for profit, but for church! I've come down to basically having to get a part time job at a school to get a school bus endorsement. Our fine government at work!
So basically, they want you to pay for more useless lessons. If anything, it should be the Non-CDL population that should complete ELDT.
Sounds alot like an extortion fee

What if I am trying to add a P Endorsement in 2023 to my CDL License that was obtained in 12/2021
If you didn’t hold the P endorsement prior to 2/2022, you’ll have to take that portion of ELDT to add that endorsement.
So basically all eldt is is a "prelude" before your road exam?
Yes, to add the S endorsement, you’ll need to take ELDT even though you already have the P endorsement
@@Trucksafe Thank you so much for your valuable time to answer my question.
So if you take the online theory training do you have to find somewhere to take btw training as well since there is no hour requirement?
Yes
I need some info. I need to get my class b with hazmat and tankers endorsement . For my job I'm a mobile mechanic. I live in California. So do I do the eldt first then go to the DMV and then. Go get my back ground check for hazmat. I'm confused what order does it go.
Find a training provider first and they’ll let you know what order you need to do stuff. Most do the theory portion of ELDT first, then you go to the DMV and take the knowledge test to get your CLP, then take your behind-the-wheel ELDT.
So, I used to have hazmat, and tanker.... on april I went to renew my licence
found out that i had to take the test on the computer for hazmat
they did not provide endorsement test at the DMV i went to, so I had to drop my hazmat...
do i still need to complete the ELDT? TO GET MY HAZMAT BACK?
The DOT hasn’t addressed this question as far as I know but I just submitted the question to them and will respond here when I hear back
Okay, we received a response back from the DOT on this topic. They indicated that if you previously held a hazmat endorsement prior to 2/7/22, you do NOT need to take ELDT to get that hazmat endorsement reinstated now, even if you don't currently have that endorsement.
@@Trucksafe oh yeah I appreciate it . I already went and did not have to take it 😆😆😆 thanks for your response buddy.
I have my CDL for 14 years I had hazmat endorsement then was expired in 2018 now I went to DMV tried to take the test they told me I have to take the ELDT training
I thought the first DMV didn’t know what they were doing then I wen to a second one and they told me the same thing
I even showed them my old CDL with the hazmat endorsement still refused to let me take the test
So please tell what do I need to do in that case
Clearly this new law says if you had it before you do not fall in that category
Got a question if u have CLP and Eldt pass can U take the Hazmat test at the DMW LOCATIONS??Thank you!
I think you should be able to I just did where i live just call them and check.
Can I get my permit before completing any eldt training?
How long after I complete training can I take my hazmat test? Do I have to wait a certain amount of time before I will be allowed to take the skills test?
Nope. As soon as your training provider uploads your completion certificate (must be done within 3 business days), you should be good to go.
So I had my clp before the edit I just got my cdl now I want my hazmat do I need to take yh edit course if so that ain't right
to be able to take my cdl permit test at a dmv, do i have to have both behind the wheel and theory eldt certification or can i just do theory eldt certification in order to be able to take the test?
For class A or B, you need both parts of ELDT in order to take the skills test at the DMV.
so then just for my commercial learner permit i would just need the theory and after i obtain it my learners permit, then i can do the behind the wheel training portion to qualify for my skills test?
That’s how we recommend you do it, but technically you can get your CLP without taking any of the ELDT.
okay thank you so much, i’m trying to get into lineman school and i have to get my clp permit before i can do so, i appreciate it a ton
So can i do the hazmat training 100% online? Or will i need fisical training ass well
If all you need is the hazmat endorsement, it can be done online.
@@Trucksafe im following, im looking into gettin my X and doubles/triples. Do this new rule bypass me having to go to the dmv to take the hazmat test or it will allow me to take the test once i finish this new training?
Still will have to go take the test at the DMV once you finish your training.
Do you know how long it takes the fmsca to respond back,to get the go ahead to take a hazmat test? I completed my ELDT yesterday, today I heard maybe 45 days for the ok to take test
You waited 45days?
I got my permit before fab 7 , but I got my cdl license after Fab 7 . Now I need to get hazmat. Should I do eldt ? Please give me answers? Thank you
Yes, you’ll need to take the hazmat theory portion of ELDT to get that endorsement now. You should be able to find a provider online at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov.
Is there an ELDT course that can be taken online I just got my CLP next step is getting this ELDT done
Yes, the theory portion of ELDT a an be taken online. If you search for a training provider at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov, you can filter the results to show online providers.
@@Trucksafe thankyou for the response brother!
You said (For the first time) I had my hazmat in 2010 it expired in 2015 do I need to take the eldt to get my hazmat?
Yes, the FMCSA has since clarified that previous holders of the hazmat endorsement does not qualify under the grandfathering, so you’ll need to take the theory portion of ELDT to get your hazmat.
@@Trucksafe thank you, way better explanation then DMV
Question :
I got my permit at DMV , and wasn't aware about this new rule.
Can be anyone who is registered through the FMCSA, including individuals if you can find them.
What advice can you give me on material that I can use to teach the class
Really no secret to it…use your experience to develop an outline and content that follows the mandatory curriculum we linked in our last comment. Also there are some groups that resell training materials. SambaSafety is one.
I got my permit on feb 7th that monday morning. Am i grandfathered in or no?
So I have my permit and all endorsements in Oklahoma but I was told I have to go to a 4 week class to even take my road test is that true
Did you obtain your permit and endorsements prior to February 7th? If so, you’d be exempt from the entry-level training requirement. If not, you’d have to obtain that training.
I’ve had my cdl class A since 2019 does this apply to me?
Only if you’re trying to add a hazmat, passenger or school bus endorsement
I got my permit last month, but I work for the city of Chattanooga which is the government, can’t I just hv them train me in terms of driving?
Only if they’re registered as a training provider on the FMCSA’s registry. tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov.
Ok I’m a little confused. I have had my CDL since November 2018. I saw this rule and I’m currently scheduled for an appointment for the hazmat test. Since I have had my CDL before the start of this rule, do I need the ELDT training for hazmat or can I walk in and take the exam without it?
You’ll need ELDT to take the test.
Hazmat endorsements just require classroom training, no BTW.
Question: I downgraded like 3 years ago my CDL to DL. Now I want to get my CDL back in another state(TX). Do I have to do ELDT training or I'm considered as a first time CDL applicant?
I bet you have to do the ELDT.
@@kebertxela941 I did not. And if u have it they don’t ask for certificate at any other confirmation.
@@nicolaetriboi6798 Cool.
I’ve had my class A cdl since 2018. Do I still have to take ELDT training to get my hazmat endorsement today? Please answer
Yes, but only the hazmat theory portion of ELDT.
To upgrade from B to A, you’d need to take the ELDT. Grandfathering only works if you’re keeping the same license type that you had before Feb 7
Dang I never saw you replied to my comment, thank you sir!.
Been sitting 4 hours finishing this stupid requirement lol and my school only accepts eldt direct which is $249 bucks
Is eldt worth it I already getting help of one of them
What's the average price for the class. When you are just upgrading your CDL.
If i got my CDL S license...would this speed up the process in getting my cdl restricted a license?
I have had a CLP since 10/7/2021.
Am I able to get a class A or B without having to take the ELDT?
Yes, as long as you haven’t had to renew your CLP after February 7th of this year.
Ive heard that the new training costs a few thousand dollars is this true?
Really just depends on the training provider. I’ve seen it as low as a couple hundred dollars.
( The ELDT requirements apply to individuals who obtain a commercial learner’s permit (CLP) on or after February 7, 2022.)
What they mean by this ?
My permit was before fab 7
If you got your CLP prior to 2/7 and haven’t had to renew it after that date, you’re exempt from ELDT
@@Trucksafe what happens if you get an extension but got the CLP before Feb. 7th
If you get an extension after 2/7, you’ll have to take ELDT.
@@Trucksafe thank you !
Great info. thx.
Probably a dumb question but do I have to go to school for all of this or can I do it online ?
You can do the theory portion online. Just search for an online provider at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov. The behind the wheel portion obviously has to be completed in person.
If I already have a CDL do I have to do this to get a hazmat endorsement
Yes, but only the hazmat theory portion of the training.
Yes, ELDT is required for a base Class B CDL.
@@Trucksafe oh ok. Thanks man.
A gift to the teamster union. The course here in Alaska costs 8000 bucks.
Make sure you shop around for training providers at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov. There are hundreds of them.
This is so confusing, I am trying to get my CLP by giving an exam for class A, do I need this ELDT training certificate before in order to sit for permit test ?
No you can get your CLP prior to taking the ELDT course.
@@Trucksafe thank u
@@Trucksafe hey in another comment you said you need a road test certificate is that true or can I just do the online program and go rent a truck and take my skill test if I feel like I’m ready
Is the permit different than the ELDT? Asking for a friend here!
Yes. You can get a Commercial Learners Permit before taking your ELDT by passing a knowledge test at your local BMV. In most cases you’ll need the permit before you take the behind the wheel portion of your ELDT so you can do the training on public highways.
Question; If your driving an F350 with a 40ft. trailer do you still have to take the eldt course?
Depends on the combined GVWRs of your truck and trailer. My guess is that combo weighs more than 26k lbs and requires a CDL.
@@Trucksafe the truck gvwr is about 8,000 the trailer 2,000
@@Trucksafe thank you for your help
I would check those again to make sure you’re looking at the GVWR and not the GVW. Most 40 ft trailers I have seen have a GVWR of somewhere around 26k by themselves
@@Trucksafe ok thank so this new law effects new CDL drivers even if they are driving a truck and gooseneck again thank you very much this is all new to me I have my CLP and med card just trying to figure out if I have to take this eldt thanks
@@Trucksafe that’s exactly how it works
This Thursday I will test with the DMV that comes to our school, I'm currently training for my class A.
I need all your support hit me up. I will post a video of my certification and then I will head over to the DMV in Elk Grove Village and get the paper print or the actual ID 🤔 I will schedule 📅 an appointment for pre enrolment process for Hazmat Endorsement.
So I pass my class A on the 15 of march 2022 and had already took all my endorsements hazmat tankers school bus in 2022 do I still need to go through this rule or program .pls help anyone
Did you pass the tests to get your permit? Or did you pass the tests and get your license?
Thanks for the update, Tasha. Just received this same guidance from the FMCSA.
