@@gunnerd686 Not until July. Switched from weekends with the shitty instructor to daily classes with a better one. But not until end of June, mid-July.
Adding to everyone else’s stories… There are so many different mental approaches to this maneuver and I think that adds to the initial difficulty. Each of our instructors has a different way of teaching it. From simple directions “left, right, straight” to using landing gear/frame rails as reference, number of turns, turn all the way, number of seconds to hold the turn… I would have one bad day where instructors needed to intervene to help me, followed by a day where I was doing it perfectly, followed by another bad day. There is truth to each method, you just have to make it work for you. Ultimately, it’s all about practice and understanding how steering wheel movements translate to what the trailer does. If you’re struggling and your instructors aren’t helping, use RUclips to find a method that works for you and it’ll start to make sense. Also, I cannot understate how important it is to set up your mirrors properly. I consider myself fairly competent at offset now. Friday, however, I got a different truck where the passenger side mirror was not securely mounted and would tilt itself to the right. Despite knowing the maneuver, it was still a challenge to go into it half blindly and I messed up a few times. I’ve seen people storm out of their trucks, frustrated over not getting it, and give up their practice time. If you’re having a hard time, keep a cool head, breathe, maybe get out to take a break, even ask other students for pointers if your instructor isn’t making sense, but don’t quit.

All I was getting from my instructor were vague hand motions to steer left, right, right, left, right, right, left and then shaking his head in exasperation while I ended up all over the flippin parking lot EXCEPT where I was supposed to! You just made it so simple for me and IT WORKS!!! THANK YOU!!!
The one turn thing works!! It helped me pass my CDL test. Super simple. Put one turn in it and take the trailer to just about 45 degrees and then straighten out. You can then see both cones in your mirrors. Steer the other way till your close to the cones and then use your GOAL to get out and see where your at. Continue back putting the trailer in the entrance of cones . This is a good time to use your one pull up to straight out and back pretty much straight in.
@@latashaburrell313 Yes, turn the wheel 1 turn before you even start moving. Cranking it all the way to start is too much and is not necessary. Remember, the back end of the trailer will move in the same direction as the bottom of your steering wheel goes.

Currently in cdl school, I have been taught a couple ways to perform this. Best way that worked for me was to crank hard until the front corner of the trailer is about 1/4 into the catwalk area, then crank hard the opposite way until you see the center cone in your mirror and use that reference to guide it in. Use your pull ups and goal if you have to! My instructors say to always get the rear of the trailer into the box before using a pull up. Good luck everyone reading!

Never had to do this on a test, but I'm sure it will come up later. I have had to do this at a flour mill and an elevator just to get in to load (at the elevator) and to scale , then unload at the reciever. Both the elevator and the mill were built in the 20's and were never updated beyond the 70's as far as getting big trucks and trailers in and out.

As an ex-trainer you don't know how many times I have heard that. You're good at straight backing "in school". Real world backing doesn't have cones and markers there for you to help.
if you're a beginner and you want to know which direction you should turn the wheel, this is how I get it (I'm a beginner also), think in terms of the 'front of the container', if you want it (front of the container) to turn to the right then turn the wheel to the right, the opposite is true, once you can really control the front of the container it's easier to fit the end of the container in the right place knowing that the end of the container moves at opposite direction of the front, I strongly suggest to try on 'truck simulator' games it's so realistic and challenge your self (and my self of course).
@@PabloBridge like everything in life some got it others got to work, I struggled too and spent tens of hours and finally got it. I think part of it was being too stubborn to accept how the trailer actually behaves when backing...
Big boolin Im starting orientation Tuesday and i want to do the truck driving thing I’m scared nervous and I over think things man any tips for rookies going into cdl like I’m a good lister but I’m not so good with test taking
33 years of driving and I'm telling you it's not rocket science. Just remember to keep the trailer wheels about 10 inches from the near side cones as you push it back. The rest is all experience and getting the feel for timing when to follow the trailer. Easy peasy...
As the trailer STARTS to line up with the box turn the wheel away from the box. THIS is extremely important. All last week I was turning the wheel away from the lane when my trailer line up with the box. When this happens, by the time the tractor swings around and line up with the trailer, the straight line back is going to be almost impossible without a pull up because the trailer is going to either be on the inside line or outside of it. I could not understand this last week. It's all about timing. It clicked today and I nailed it!
Just gotta practice. Not hard, I got it down somewhat after a few tries. A tip is when you are gunna turn your wheel stop completely, this will save you space, and if you need to pull up don't just pull up a little, pullup a lot if needed and get the trailer and tractor straight, take your time it's not a race. XPO Logistics baby!
Our instructor is telling us full turn, back up until you see 3/4 of your landing gear, full turn again, back up till you see both sides of trailer then straighten the front wheels then adjust for a even arc tractor and trailer into the space.
I had the hardest time on the yard with this when I got to the test yesterday I failed from too many points pulling up Now I have to practice everyday til I can test again Tuesday 🤦🏽♀️
I've been driving 2 years now and I've never once had to do an offset back if a company has you pull into a different dock it's not necessarily going to be the one right next to you
I'm struggling with this offset backing myself. I just asking that everyone on here send a prayer up for me praying I pass this! Thanks In Advance My Friends!
I’ve started doing off- set backing a week ago for couple hours a day! I’m still struggling!! I wasn’t looking on the right side when I turn one O’clock! let me try this trick and see if that’s going to help! 🙏
Great, great lesson on offsetting. like the steering wheel 🎡 help me better understand how to correct that question ⁉️ mark error. Thanks 👍😊 retaking my backing test tomorrow.
I hear the same thing from a lot of drivers. Reason given by DPS is that it gives the examiner the opportunity to see how well you can maneuver a truck when backing.
I like this video a lot....I wish the volume would have been higher and the background lighter It's difficult to hear while watching on a cellphone device and it looks like it was recorded in the dark.
If a shipper/receiver requests moving to another spot, I charge them big $$$. They more than likely leave you where you're spotted. This maneuver is primarily used by yard personnel in yard trucks. If you do this, you don't pull straight forward. This is bad schooling. Know your intentions and how to best accomplish the move BEFORE you release the brakes.
That's a maneuver you never ever do in trucking, you never gonna switch parking spaces in a truck stop or a shipper, so what's the idea to learn that maneuver? I've been driving for years and I went to school and learned that maneuver , never used it, same for the parallel parking maneuver, simply useless.
Yes, you will never do that maneuver... But just knowing how to do it is very valuable. It shows that you can maneuver the trailer. It's a blind side and a sight side. Very good video. So it is a very nessessary backing exercise to learn. And just because you have never parallel parked does not mean that you have not done the maneuver in other situations. It shows that you are able to maneuver the trailer.

But why this very low volume?
Everything about this school is perfect! I went here for my training and passed on the first time.
I am in CDL class right now, and this video helped a lot!
I’m practicing this at school now. I just competed straight backing last week
Not as bad as I thought it be. Better as days go by. Only took me 30 yrs to get into truck driving. Best thing I’ve ever done!

This the best one I've watched. You not trying to be too hightech. Sinple and plane. Good Job!!!!
Hello 👋
How are you doing ? ❤❤
if you're a beginner and you want to know which direction you should turn the wheel, this is how I get it (I'm a beginner also), think in terms of the 'front of the container', if you want it (front of the container) to turn to the right then turn the wheel to the right, the opposite is true, once you can really control the front of the container it's easier to fit the end of the container in the right place knowing that the end of the container moves at opposite direction of the front, I strongly suggest to try on 'truck simulator' games it's so realistic and challenge your self (and my self of course).

Thanks u so much,I watch this video all week and went to school Saturday on nail it , thanks again.
Don’t worry, it’s not too hard. I took my CDL test, having never done this maneuver and had to do it on the test. Passed with no problems.
I dunno. It’s week 3 and I still can’t do it
@@PabloBridge like everything in life some got it others got to work, I struggled too and spent tens of hours and finally got it. I think part of it was being too stubborn to accept how the trailer actually behaves when backing...
Thanks. I’m not giving up!
The test was to easy for me I trained for about a year and passed with flying colors
Big boolin Im starting orientation Tuesday and i want to do the truck driving thing I’m scared nervous and I over think things man any tips for rookies going into cdl like I’m a good lister but I’m not so good with test taking
I loved watching this video and I really believe it’s going to help me with backing.
33 years of driving and I'm telling you it's not rocket science. Just remember to keep the trailer wheels about 10 inches from the near side cones as you push it back. The rest is all experience and getting the feel for timing when to follow the trailer. Easy peasy...
If I did anything for 33 years it would be easy peasy lol
Hello 👋
How are you doing ? ❤❤
This video gives me more confidence,I'm gonna do tomorrow this practice I wish I will do the same way inshallaah.
Thank you so much for this it has helped me out so much wear I can pass this now thank you
Just gotta practice.

I hear the same thing from a lot of drivers. Reason given by DPS is that it gives the examiner the opportunity to see how well you can maneuver a truck when backing.

Please elaborate. Why is it a bad idea to pull straight forward? Just curious.
Hello 👋
How are you doing ???
Thanks man this video has helped a lot. I have a great instructor who showed me but seeing it from another view it helps a lot.
Hello 👋
How are you doing ? ❤❤
That's a maneuver you never ever do in trucking, you never gonna switch parking spaces in a truck stop or a shipper, so what's the idea to learn that maneuver? I've been driving for years and I went to school and learned that maneuver , never used it, same for the parallel parking maneuver, simply useless.
so may not have used it for years, but when it does need to be used, you will be happy that you learned it.
Receiving clerk:- Sorry man, dock door's stuck, go ahead and back into next door on your right.
Truck driver:- Oh come on...
Regardless of how much it is used, It is part of the current test.
Idk but I wish I didn’t have to learn it now I can drive I’m just having a hard time do this
