Three Dog Night is an American rock band formed in 1967, founded by vocalists Chuck Negron, Cory Wells, and Danny Hutton. This lineup was soon augmented by Jimmy Greenspoon, Joe Schermie, Michael Allsup, and Floyd Sneed. The band had 21 Billboard Top 40 hits between 1969 and 1975, with three hitting number one. They are firmly planted in Classic Rock History.

Laura Nyro wrote the song in Jr High music class, supposedly to prove to the teacher that Rock & Roll wasn't junk. It was on her second album "Eli and the thirteenth confession" and there seems to be no mention of who Eli was.

Three Dog Night was a soul/r&b/rock outfit with 3 lead singers that _owned_ the airwaves and record charts from about 1969-1975. They were _the sound_ of the early 1970s, plain and simple. Try "Shambala," "Old-Fashioned Love Song," or "Never Been to Spain" for some great vibes!

Cory Wells on the lead, Chuck Negron with the high voice, Danny Hutton on the Walk Walk part, and when all three come together, it's magic time! They were known as a "cover band" and they did use other people's songs, but almost all were from young up and coming writers whose originals weren't widely known and TDN made them and their songs famous. Deep rabbit hole here, too many hits to list, but faves are One, Black and White, Easy To Be Hard, Mama Told Me Not to Come, Joy To the World, Out In the Country and the list goes on. They were like the Beatles in that every song sounded unique, done in several different styles. Quality stuff, keep a-ridin that train! 👍🏾

I think it's hard for today's listeners to understand what a big deal Three Dog Night was in their heyday. Their posters advertised that they sold more records than Creedence and drew bigger crowds than the Beatles. That's the size arena that they were operating in. For reasons that we 3DN fans don't understand their fame did not endure. They aren't played on the classic rock stations and they aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, despite their many, many top 40 hits, including Old Fashioned Love Song, Shambala, Joy to the World, Liar, One, One Man Band, Mama Told Me Not to Come, Let Me Serenade You, The Show Must Go On, Black and White, Try a Little Tenderness, Never Been to Spain, Family of Man, and others that I can't remember off the top of my head. They were doing something that had become passe and instead of writing their own songs, they played the best songs written by other professional songwriters like Elton John, Randy Newman, Laura Nyro, Leo Sayer and many more. One of the original singers, Danny Hutton, keeps the flames alive and his Three Dog Night is on tour even as I write this.

Eli's Comin' was written by the great singer-song writer Laura Nyro. Three Dog Night recorded a number of her songs. I believe the back-up band had previously worked for Janis Joplin and were known as Full Tilt Boogie. I especially like their rendition of Paul Williams' song (another great prolific songwriter of the 1970s) Out In The Country. Great documentary about Paul Williams, his songwriting and his life, out on streaming video.

My all-time favorite rock band....Three Dog Night performing their classic hit, "Eli's Coming," in 2002.(ruclips.net/video/znaYWPIM72A/видео.htmlsi=1RpMKTrwJUmErfvz) with Tennessee Symphony Orchestra....such a great concert and I thought you might want to see them perform this song in 2004. Some changes have happen. Lead singer Chuck Negron is not the third lead singer in the band anymore. He has gone solo. Floyd Snead the drummer is not in the band....new bass player/lead singer in the band showcases his vocal with this song.....however, Corey Wells and Danny Hutton, lead singers are still in the band.....they all performed the song so soulfully good. It is FIRE!!! FIRE!!! The Old boys never miss a beat......and their vocals were stronger than EVER!!! Check it out!!!! It is a Live performance!!!

Hearing how having 3 lead singers worked together for Three Dog Night , I wonder if this had a bit of influence on Lynyrd Skynyrd having 3 lead guitar players in a band . Those configurations gave both those bands distinct advantages of having their own distinct sound comparable to other bands of their era .😎

I heard that their group’s name came from this. When knights of England would sleep in a castle they needed warmth from the cold. Sometimes they would cuddle up with one dog. On a colder night they would need two dogs. Then, of course, on a frigid night they would need three dogs to stay warm. Hence the name,
Three Dog Night. A play on the word knight.

While the song is about a broken romance, Laura Nyro, whose mother was Jewish, is referencing the return of the Prophet Elijah. Every Passover, Jews set an extra cup of wine on the dinner table and open the door for the enigmatic prophet Elijah, hoping he will enter. An evolving symbol of hope and redemption in Judaism over the centuries, Elijah's return is said to mark the Messiah's earthly arrival.

The name "Three Dog Night" was actually taken from an Eskimo legend, of how many sled dogs you let lay on top of you, depending on how cold it was that night. One, Dog may have been good enough on a cold night, but in extreme cold temps of say 30 to 50 Degrees below zero, you would probably need the warmth of three Dogs to curl up with that night if you were going to survive that cold of temperature.

The Jewish people will disagree with me, but El-i is the face of God that is totally against any kind of sin, He is the jealous God of retribution, unlike Yahweh, the face of God that is mercy and compassion.
