This is what am talking about breve precise to the point not a lot of blablabla great video appreciate it very much
my truck doesnt have screw. there is somd kind of metal retaining clip
@@abergethirty How did you remove it?
I've never heard you talk about this
The best part of this video is the speed and COMPLETE thoroughness of steps! No time for bs thank you!
Thanks for that great feedback!
YES - to the point. Clear and precise. TY
Agree!
In agreement
This video took me from crying in a parking lot in frustration to knowing how to fix my problem. Thank you
Glad it helped!
Rockstar! Savior!
I was at the end of my rope. I had given up all hope. The bullet was in the chamber and then I saw this video. Now I have a fixed rear view mirror
Same - I’m crying now- have to see if the metal part removes from mirror now… ugh..
You dont need a rear view mirror bro. No need to cry lol
I'm in the process of moving and starting a new job and my rearview mirror fell off on the road! I was freaking out and crying! I just wanna say today my bf and I followed these instructions and it worked! We are so GRATEFUL because we are on a budget for funds and were worried that we would've had to go to the auto shop to get it fixed! You saved us the time and MONEY so we thank YOUUUUUU so very much ❤
Very good video, and it is the exact process 📝 for replacing the rear view mirror to your windshield follow these instructions 2 The T and it will not fail... 🪞 and also save you 💸 money 💰.
✌🏽🇺🇸
Best tip: Mark with tape on the outside.
Your instructional video was brief, to the point and you didn't miss critical steps. If other RUclipsrs would follow your example and cut out the unnecessary dialogue, then it wouldn't be so frustrating to watch DIY videos. Well done sir. Followed your instructions and used the same products you recommended in this and everything worked out like a charm! Thanks for posting this Chris. You did superb job!
Thanks for that great feedback!
Chris Fix and Chris Notap.
The two Chris's that have helped me sirvive being an adult
I'm so glad I watched this before attempting this.
Straightforward video for straightforward fix! Everything you said aligned with what I was thinking, but it was very nice to have your reassuring guidance and confirmation. Thanks much!
Great video. Short and to the point, and showed us exactly what to get. 10/10
I used this particular Permatex product a year ago to fix a rearview mirror similar to the one in your video. Just today the mirror came off again so I thought I'd do a bit of research before attempting the fix a second time. Your tip about wiping the back of the button with the towelette is golden; I believe the repair failed as I followed the printed instructions carefully yet the bond between glue and button failed. I remember having to scrape glue off both the windshield *and* the button when the factory adhesive failed; this time all the glue remnants were on the windshield and none were left on the button. Thanks!
Chris- Terrific video. Straight forward, to the point, and good video/audio. Who in the world gives this a thumbs down? I'm very grateful for your efforts.
Thanks for that great feedback and yes, I wonder the same thing. I guess it's people just having a bad day.
Mirror fell off on my 97 Suburban. This is 2022. I’m the original owner. This truck owes me nothing and still runs like new at 187,000 miles. Your vid was clear and explained how to do this repair perfectly. Hardest part was scraping off the old glue from the metal button that holds the mirror. Essential to place it in the mirror to scrape it. Took at least 15 minutes just to do that if not more.
Thanks for posting this. Subscribed.
Very well explained, nothing missing.
Thanks.
Very helpful. And, sidenote, watching this in July 2024, that same $5.99 kit now ranges anywhere from $10.97 at Walmart to $18.97 at Auto Zone!
@@kathrynlouiseberman7919 like $8 on Amazon
@@kathrynlouiseberman7919 whaaaaaatttt...... guess I'll just suffer for a little longer

5 years later and this video is still the best diy for this particular problem that I've seen
Thanks my husband’s just fell off and tried gorilla glue and didn’t have any luck. Thanks
Thank you. I was about to try gorilla glue, lol.
The temperature where I’m located was 95+ degrees so 20 degrees hotter than the 75 degree limit they recommend. I put a soft ice pack in a towel and put it on the windshield over the button area. I anchored the other end of the towel with a weight on top of the roof to keep the towel from sliding off. I felt the glass inside the car and it was 65-70 degrees so well within the range to install the kit. So far it’s working. I had my windshield replaced just before the pandemic hit (February 2020) and they used what looked like double sided tape. I was surprised it lasted as long as it did. The windshield was $225 cheaper than Safelight. They wanted $350 to install it. I had a new one installed for $125. Safelight rips people off. (8-22-20)
Someone has to pay for all their advertising so the customer does.
@@whatsnewonthemountain Same for the constant drug, insurance and other ads. We pay for all of it. Imagine if we nationalized several key industries like energy, drug companies and insurance. We could save trillions in waste in ads, duplicate bureaucracies and how those industries buy politicians to screw us even more.
Good Video...short, concise and pointed out a few things I wouldn't have thought of. And, no music! Thanks
Excellent teacher ! Thankyou.
You sir saved me a ton of money! God almighty I was thinking of having to bring the vehicle to a local glass repair shop
Honestly! Great video! Thank you for producing this!
Will this work if I can't control the temperature inside my car in the middle of the summer?
Garrett Daniels Do it early in the morning when the temperature is 75 degrees or less. Or do what I did. It was 11am but the temp was already 95 degrees so I put a soft ice pack in a towel and put it on the outside of the windshield. I weighed down the other end of the towel with a heavy object on the roof. It brought the temperature of the inside of the windshield down to within 65-70 degrees, well within the 53-75 degree temperature recommended by the adhesive company.
I appreciate you brother. My foxbody's mirror does as well.
Thank you so much for the lack of crap in your video :)
well I did just like in video , worked perfect
my mirror back on in my 1999 dodge ram truck 1500

thank you
Thank you so much I LOVE RUclips University!!!!
Quick, right to the business. Thanks!
Great and helpful video! I wanted to upgrade from a normal mirror to an auto dimming homelink compass style but the new one wasn't compatible with my old mount. I was able to swap them out! Thanks for the information
I wish i had watch videos on this before taking it to the shop.. wouldve saved so much money
My mirror fell off 2 days ago. ( Ford 2010 F150.) The metal part is still attached to wind shied as is the metal clip.....YEP that clip should be on the mirror but it is not. No way I can slide this onto both pieces. Any thoughts? Thanks for your help.
Wow, things have changed over the years. I'm really glad I watch this. It is simple and fast. Thanks Chris you did a great job.
This is why I love RUclips. Followed the instructions, worked perfectly. Thanks!
I wish I had seen your video earlier. I did not know how to get the button off my Chrysler Town & Country. all the videos i saw show taking a small
screwdriver and pressing a spring UNDER the button. none show the screw that you looses to remove the button. thank you
Thank you for your help on a hot morning needing to get to work. This video was the only way I was going to fix it
Thanks so much for the information, I purchased your recommended glue, and it bonded the mirror wonderful as you instructed. Thank you.
Hi Chris. Finally had the opportunity to try-out your frying-pan-pizza hack. To say the least, I was skeptical. But through a confluence of events I was presented with a pan, a lid and 3 leftover pizza slices..so I tried it..and I can't believe leftover pizza can be that great. As you say, "even better than when it comes straight from the pizza shop". Thanks!!
I just got here but something
About this got me to subscribe
easy video I think I can do it
mine came off in 0ver 90-degree heat in NY

I don't appreciate that negativity on doing it the lazy way and holding the whole mirror while adhesive sets lol thanks for the tips.
it said to remove + sand it.
Thank you for the help sir. My mdx mirror came off while they were tinting my vehicle

Is this the same process for re-installing a pick-up rear window slider lock? I have a 2003 F250 that the window lock fell off and was lost.
Smem
How long did it last? I did mine the exact same way and it fell a week after
@@nimster64 It never fell off again. I sold it 2 years later. You have to make sure every last speck of old glue is removed or you are on the path for it to fail.
@@chrisnotap thank you for the reply
thanks so much for uploading this! just reattached my rear view mirror with minimal hassle thanks to these instructions.
So you leave that black patch on the window and reattach the button or a new button on top of the black patch area on the window? I have a 2003 Honda Pilot with that black patch. I was going to try to scrape it off but it won't budge even with a new razor blade. So you try to get all the "glue" off in the middle of the black patch, leaving the black patch. Has anyone else done a 2003 Honda Pilot? I'm wondering how to remove the old button? There is no screw. I've seen a few that pry the end of the mirror where the flat side of the button is and then push with the other thumb on the curved side of the button so it slides out. Any tips or experience with removing the button from the mirror itself on a 2003 Honda Pilot? Thanks for the excellent video.
This shows a newer model Pilot but it should the same......ruclips.net/video/rqvzm8rs_gQ/видео.html&ab_channel=MichaelPowell. Ps Yes, leave the black painted surface on the windshield!
@@chrisnotap Thank you, but I don't have a screw in mine. It's also not one of the mounts that twists off either. The button and some glass from the window actually detached so I'm just trying to remove the old button from the mirror assembly and then put a new button at a different location on the window.
Thanks for the video, straight to the point
As soon as he said "ooot" I knew he was our neighbor to the north, lol
Thank you, this is the first time I have had a rear view mirror fell off.
You are right, the instructions on pkg says use activator only on windshield.
It makes sense to do the button too.
Thanks again.
I love that he knows better than the manufacturer. 😆
*what if the piece of the mirror is broken?*
Go to the wrecker and get another one cheap.
Omg !! Great video help me a lot!!! Thanks
Thank you for taking the time to post this very helpful video.
Thank you thank you thank you I never even saw the screw
Worked perfectly! Bought the exact stuff and had no issues what so ever! Thanks!
That’s great!!
Chris,
Your video is detailed, concise, and thoroughly helpful. Thank you for helping me and so many others with this quick vid!
I realize it has been five years since you posted this instructional piece, but I hope all is well in your life.
Have a great one!
Oh thanks for that nice feedback! Life is good!
You saved my life, this happened to me last year and I was going to try and tackle it but my technician knocked it out for me instead, it's happened to me again almost 1 year exactly, BUT I TACKLED IT THIS TIME
1000 times thanks
You save me a lot of headache
It did help. I love it! Thank you!
Thank you bro. Genius video lol
I put a bandaid on the outside of the wihdshield.
Where do you get the black patch from as my vehicle don’t have one
Some don’t have that on the windshield
Thank you, very helpful.
Thank you very much!! 😊
Now show me the "easy way" to do it for a Ford Edge Sport 2010. 'Cause that fvcker was IMPOSSIBLE to get the stupid metal button out. There is no outside screw to make it easy. Just one solid plastic piece.
-----
Screwdriver? Nope. Fail.
Ended up having to wedge a nail under the middle of it to depress the clamp and keep it depressed.
Then had to figure out how to get the button OUT. Whacking an L-shaped hex wrench? Fail.
Whacking a screwdriver bit? Fail.
Ended up having to find a butterknife with just the right width to fit in between the opposite side plastic pieces, and whack the tip of it hard enough to move the metal button, but not enough to bend/break the butterknife. But it wouldn't come out all the way, so I got it far enough to be past the nibs in the retainer clip, then removed the nail that was depressing the clip, and whacked the butterknife some more.
Took like a damn hour to try literally everything under the sun before I finally found a combination that actually got the stupid button out. [Keeping in mind it was in the mirror and already off the windshield so it wasn't really attached to anything to use as leverage to push it out.].
I really hope I never have to do that again.
Once it was out, the reattachment to the windshield was easy and only took like 5-10 mins. (Once I remembered to go back and get some scissors to cut the adhesive packet.)
On my Permatex package it says to clean/wipe/prime both the windshield and the button and allow to dry for ~1 minute before applying the adhesive. So, I did both. I guess they must have updated the packaging after complaints or whatnot?
How long does it work? is it still glued?
Excellent, thorough w/o over explaining plus..what DOESN'T WORK. (Are you psychic?)
Please make a tutorial on how to write tutorials...
Lol! I may do that!! Thanks!
So helpful! I can do this.
Thanks Dad
Someone, not me, apparently glued the windshield part into the mirror, who know why? Is there a way to remove that part from the mirror - penetrating liquid, soaking - ???
The one thing you could try is using acetone. In other words, nail polish remover. Put the end of the mirror in a small glass. You may need to prop it against something to keep it staying up-right. Then fill the glass until it covers the part that is glued. Let it sit for a day then try removing it 24 hours later. The acetone may also remove any paint that it contacts on the mirror but it also may not hurt the paint. Your only other alternative is to go to the wreckers and get the 2 parts.
Thanks so much. This helped a ton
My button has some glass stuck on it. Will glass to glass work or I have to completely glue button next to the original spot
The glass to glass may work. If it's a perfect fit back into the same spot, probably yes. If it's not a perfect fit, then maybe not.
We were defeated by a stripped, star-headed screw holding the metal piece into the mirror. We didn't strip it, the person who had re-attached the mirror before us did.
Are you sure it's stripped? Have a close look with a flashlight. It may be a TORX screw. They can look like a stripped screw.
Thanks :)
Great video help me a lot I didn't have to remove any glue off it was hot that the glue stuck to the windshield lol. I just peeled it off cleaned like you did it worked like a charm 👍
That’s what I’m going through right now!!! Came out this morning, windshield off, all glue on the glass.
This just happened to me this weekend. I got in the car and the mirror was on the floor. I tried Velcro. Dumb idea, I know, but I thought it would be a temporary fix until I could figure it out. I'm going to try your advice in this video. Wish me luck!!
Yes sir! Thanks buddy!!
nice and to the point! Thanks
The part that glues to the windshield remains.
When I attempt to adjust the rear view mirror, it comes out of the part glued to the windshield
The screw that holds it on has probably loosened. Just pull up to your local garage and ask if they could tighten it for you. This is usually a no charge thing that they will do.
Great video - short and to the point without all that hoopla that so many others do. You’ve just earned yourself a like and subscriber👍🏼👍🏼
I bought Permatex, followed instructions to the letter, and it failed. This is the one chance that I'm giving this brand. I will try getting my money back.
M J me to popped right off
Love your barn doors in the background by the way!
Those are fake doors I made and installed them on the face of my old one piece solid metal garage door.
Thank you!! This may seem SOOO simple, but its really helpful to use who dont know anything about cars. Thank you!! ☺☺☺☺☺
Glad it was helpful!
What a great help! Thanks!
Well done! wish me luck!
Great video Mr. Notap. My mirror fell 4 different times, used gorilla glue, super glue, etc. You're right, that stuff doesn't work. 😝
So helpful. Short and sweet. Thank you!
Thanks. Good video.
yaaaay! thank you😘
Great tips; thanks!
Followed the instructions to the letter with the same permatex glue, let it dry 24 hours before installing the mirror - metal tab fell off while sliding the mirror on.
You may not have had all of the old material removed. Try it again. Use the razor scraper. Feel with your finger to make sure all of it is removed. Use the amount I show in the video. You've got this!
Thanks!
Thank you!!!! 🙏🏽
I don’t know where it goes on the window there was nothing there to mark where it was.
There will be glue remnants left behind. Use a flashlight and you'll see it.
Thx so much for awesome, well explained and well photographed technique! Will be purchasing items today : )
thank yiu
Excellent video. Clear simple instructions. Thanks.
Thanks you so much!!!
Would not stick to windshields. All I have is pure window. No black whatever you had on windshield
Doesn't need to have the black stuff. Some manufacturers didn't use the black, just glass. It sticks to glass fine. You may have done one of 2 things. Make sure all old glue is removed. All of it! And 2, you may have applied too much glue. Watch the video and apply the same as what I did.
My mirror just broke off but the metal piece is still on. Can I buy the mirror, take the metal piece off it and slide it on?
You should be able to buy a mirror and place it onto the metal piece that is still on the glass.
Great Video thanks
What it the metal piece is still attached, but mirror has come off??
Just re-attach your mirror and tighten what ever has come loose that holds it on.
Two things:
1. I looked at Lowe's, Walmart Menards, and Home Depot for the scraper you used. Couldn't find one anywhere. I settled with a reasonably priced one at Home Depot.
2. Why couldn't GM place a regular Philips screw to hold the button on instead of the fancy "star-shaped" one?
The mirror is going back on tomorrow.
