Thanks so much for this video and explaining each step thoroughly. I'm a single woman (40) who still relies on my dad but sometimes he's too busy. It's great to find such a helpful video so I can fix my mirror all by myself! Much appreciated from SC!
Thank you so much for this video! I was looking up estimates and was told I could expect to pay between $135 to $200 and another person I called said they may have to take the windshield out. I found your video and purchased the adhesive for less than $3 and I needed a special tool to unscrew the button. That was less than $2. So again, thank you so much for this video.
I just bought a 89 Ford Taurus SHO and the rear view mirror was just hanging out in the back seat and I had no idea how to re mount it. This video was probably the best one I’ve seen, thank you!
Just got this same kit $1.97 at Walmart Automotive, was getting an oil change there...for some reason not given they will not install it though...WAY too many directions on package for me but found your vid here which I just watched and it's perfect! Thanks much!
The first time I did this repair job, I installed the metal bracket upside down. I went to an auto glass shop to see how to remove it. "You can't" was their reply. Lesson learned. That car still has an extra bracket on the windshield. Have a great day, Bryan.
You can remove the mirror mount. You would need to heat the mount enough to soften the glue enough to be able to use pliers to carefully twist it off. The big catch is if you use to much heat or use to much force to pull the mount from the glass you can crack the windshield. I do windshields and have to swap mounts sometimes.
@@williamsovich8314 What do you use to mount the button for rear view windows? I live in Florida and none of the over the counter products hold for more than a few months.

That's a crazy coincidence! I am going to be doing that to my "98 Expedition today. I've done it before, back in the 90's, but it's just cool that you uploaded this one today! LOL!!! Great job Brother!
Just tried your instructions today and worked great, BUT, how do I remove some of the activator that is now on the glass windshield - with what remover substance? Thanks for your assistance!!! ❤
Excellent information, very thorough. I wish I would have watched this video before I attempted to reattach my windshield rear view mirror before. I ended up having to attach the original metal piece to the other metal piece which I first attached to the windshield, wrongly thinking that it would fit the slot of my rear view mirror. Thanks for the tip to stick the original metal tab onto the one I had already stuck to the windshield! As well, the tip about the dry erase marker excellent! Much appreciated!
How’s it holding up? I’m in Florida which is even hotter and I’m afraid the heat will fry the glue in the summer. I agree about the vintage Ford engine sound. My 2000 Explorer has the 4.0 pushrod and I could listen to that thing idle all day.
@@SurvivalOnPurpose , it absolutely was. We have a 2005 Ram. It's been so hot that mirror just fell off the windshield. I used an old crayon that I found in a drawer and marked the outside of the windshield. My wife's nail polish remover helped weaken glue residue. Razor blade , accelerator and then , one drop. Step by step.... What to do and what look out for .... A+ I appreciate your reply to me too ! Thanks again , Craig
Hey Brian, This video is running 3 years old now but its good and interactive. I live in the tropics and i recently had my mirror fall off my windscreen. Its been really annoying trying to find an adhesive that actually will work. What i mean is, they all fail eventually as in the mirror falls off the windshield again... The first option held up for about 2 weeks, the second about 2 days. Our temperatures can be up in the 30s during the days and one of the packages said work within a certain temperature, so i installed it in the night (the one that held up for 2 weeks) I tried in the day and it was shorter period of time. Do me a favor and tell me if yours is still holding; that would be of great help to me. Im currently reinstalling with a loctite brand glue and have my fingers crossed. I've used the one you demonstrated with as well. Thanks bro for your time.
Stuff doesnt work if you live somewhere the temperature is extreme like Texas. I used this stuff and it worked until it got up to over 100 degrees. Then my mirror fell off. Just go to a windshield place. They have stronger adhesive.
The metal connector is still attached to my windshield. I noticed there is no spring left on the mirror. The guy at Autozone told me to just glue it back onto the connector. The problem is there isn’t a flat surface on the mirror. I have tried using gorilla glue to fuse it, but it doesn’t work.
I put button on the wrong way on my Frontier! The shiny side is facing me & mirror want go on guess I was supposed to put shiny side on windshield & now how do I get it off
Maybe a heat gun would work. Or, if it’s not been on too long, you might be able to pry it off with a putty knife. But I would be very very careful you don’t wanna break your windshield. Actually, the first thing I would do is call a windshield replacement company and ask them for some advice.
Your show, your allowed to ramble. I like to think of it as being thorough, because that’s what it is. If a person doesn’t like it they can use the fast forward. You’re lucky they don’t have snowy, icy winters where they spread salt on the roads. Salt literally dissolves the underside of the cars up here in yankeeville, aka Pennsylvania. Now I’m rambling. Really hate the way those ford mirrors lock onto the mirror mount. I would have just bought the after market mirror kit at the part store that has the screw that locks mirror onto the mount. Hope you got yours to fully lock on.
I’m dealing with the same issue, and I also used the permatex. I’m about to buy some more adhesive and try again. Some things I’ve been advised to do that the instructions don’t tell you to do: make sure the metal is FLAT (especially if it’s a parts store new replacement since they are cheap quality), scuff the surfaces (both the metal and the glass) with sandpaper, and wait longer to attach your mirror. My first go at it, I took the one drip thing very literally, and it was a very small drop (much less than the one drop on this video). I think if I’d added a second drop it might have worked. 1970 F100 :)
Mine is now on and staying on after following the process I outlined above. Once I had the glass cleaned, I held the metal where I wanted it, and attached a long piece of blue painters tape to hold it in place. I then added more tape below horizontally atop that tape. Then pealed it down with the metal attached to the tape, rubbed the prep wipe on both metal and glass, waited a minute, two drops of the glue, pressed the metal in place while straightening the tape to properly position it, then held pressure for a minute. Added more tape to hold it snug and waited 24 hours. That's been about two months and the mirror is holding just fine.
Folks there are a lot of things this guy does absolutely wrong... I am not trying to be a jerk... but I am still recommending that you look up the permatex video.... this guy does get a lot of it right but Important! DO NOT install this button in very hot weather ( or cold for that matter) .. Also, when cleaning the button , scrape it like he said... however , very important, lay some sandpaper on a very flat surface face up and 'lightly' sand the the button using a circular motion... this step is important for 3 reasons... one it cleans it while keeping it flat... and 2 it leaves micro crosshatches, this causes it to accept the glue better and even though you can't really see the cross hatches but they are there ... the bond will be better... 3rdly....Its pretty much impossible to get all the glue off with just a razor blade... It will be pretty evident why if you grab some 220 grit sand paper after you've already scraped it and think its clean ... you will see all the glue you missed..unfortunately tou just do the best you can on the glass using the razor blade.... but at least you're only gluing the mirror with only half ad much glue than if you hadn't sanded the button.. While this guy does give some good information, he's still not doing it correctly... I'm sure hes good person just wanting to help others and I dont want to dis him.. but I also don't want to see a broken windshield either , or someone have their rearview mirror fall off while in town ... you know its going to happen in rush hour traffic or when your trying to back up.. So please go to the permatex sight...
Permatex SUCKS. Here is why from my experience. It may work well with a car THAT DOES NOT SIT IN THE SUN ! However , my truck does sit in the sun , and it is the heat from the windshield that causes the adhesive to fail and mirror to fall off. I used Permatex twice on my mirror and it fell off twice again in one year. So last time I went to Wal- Mart and looked a rear view adhesive kit with A VERY HIGH TEMPERATUE RATING, and I found one. Much higher than PERMATEX. So far so good. I also crack my driver's window to help prevent heat build up ! Follow his instructions on the video. I let my mirror holder dry 24 hours before attaching my mirror, and I held the mirror tight on the glued adapter with one hand while I adjusted to mirror with my free hand so not to put undo stress on it This suggestion is only for those that must , like me , park in the hot sun ! Make very sure you attach the glue side to the windshield. I took an old 6 inch ruler , two pieces of scotch tape , and temporally attached it to the BOTTOM glue line WHICH I MARKED LIGHTLY AFTER CLEANING OFF OLD ADHESIVE. I then cut one 6 in piece of Scotch Tape and stuck it on the back of my gluing hand. I put one drop of glue on the button and positioned the button on the top edge of the ruler and held tight button tight against the windshield using the 6 inch piece of tape to secure it for 24 hours. Make sure you do not repair you mirror in the sun ! The next day ,I just removed the tape and cleaned around it. Hope some of these hints help !
