After 2 decades of using every possible Black Trim coat, I FINALLY found the best trim coat product.
This is for the black plastic trim on any car or vehicle, that inevitably turns chalky gray or white over time.
This is an easy to use wipe on system (wear a glove!) directly to the plastic.
The results are not only instant, but lasts for years.
I have been using this product for 2 years now and vehicles that I applied the trim coat to ate still looking 100%!
I live in the California sun, which beams down incessantly, with barely a cloudy day break.
Here is where you can get the Cerakote product:

Do not put on smooth trim! It will start flaking off in about 2 years. It does last well on textured trim. Attention2Detail has a video about it. Throughly cleaning the trim is a must, or you won’t get good results. There is nothing you can do to remove it once it is on, so making sure the trim is clean is essential.

The product is phenomenal and lasts for years even on a vehicle that lives outside in the sun and extreme heat ONLY
If you follow the directions and properly prep the surface first.
Secondly, make sure you are careful not to allow any streaking when applying with a new applicator sheet. Any streaking will dry with high and low spots or differences in coverage.
This product is a Ceramic liquid product and once dried cannot be removed without sanding. There is you can apply to it that will remove it without damaging the plastic.
Make sure it looks perfect when you apply it.

This stuff is hit or miss. On the cowl, like this video, it worked great. On my front bumper where the plastic was smoother, it made a mess. Spotting and streaking everywhere. Was hoping it would be gone by now, but dam it’s holding up.
Ax far as getting it on the paint, it’s a ceramic coating. If it cures, have fun getting it off.
Honestly, the applicators suck. The wet wipe style is trash for a product like this. The coating automatically transfers to your gloves, then watch what you touch.

Glad it worked, sorry to hear about the white paint... Hmmm, it does say 200 washes.. I wonder if you use Unisolve to remove off the white? Single stage paint very different than paint with clear coat. I haven't had that experience. I suppose tape off either blue tape to be extra sure it doesn't touch paint. Try very light wet sand then buff with 400 Menzerna (best compound).

Peanut oil is just as fast and easy, and you don't even need to wear gloves if you don't want to. Lasts about six months in a mixed sun and rain climate, costs almost nothing per use, non-toxic. It does protect the plastic surprisingly well from UV and moisture, too. It's usually in the Baking aisle.

Mine has lastes over 2 years and still black aftee countless washes (about 30) and relentless sun. I prefer that then applying peanut oil every 6 months. If you are doing it every 6 months, its because by month 4 its not 100% and by month 6 its less than 50% becauae visually you feel thr need to do it again..

Completely diff products. This is a ceramic coat. Solution Finish is a restoration product with milled carbon that "dyes" the faded plastic back to original black. To see head to head search for comparison videos. I know Apex detailing did one & scott HD (I think) I'm searching & learning about these for my Saturn Vue with faded plastic. How the 2 products compare will depend alot on what the plastic is made of. There is a nissan exterra that used the Cerakote product on all plastics. Some held up some faded again horrible in 1 year. Its very dependant on the plastic.

Bought a clean 2005 GMC Canyon P/U that had never been shown attention to the solid vinyl bumpers trim. They were a weathered ashen grey and looked terrible. Decided to try Cerakote, keeping the Walmart receipt just in case it didn't live up to all the claims. Followed directions which included a full degrease/rinse/drying of surfaces. Parking in the shade, I began the application properly. It instantly SOAKED in & turned the faded vinyl dark as I spread the application towelette across & around until it finally was used up. Got about half the bumper treated with the one pad's application. The results were nothing less than IMPRESSIVE. It darkened the faded grey back to a dark grey with a nice bit of shine/gloss. Finished the entire bumper with a second new pad & it's been about 2 years without degradation. Not quite as shiney as before, but another treatment in the plans later in year. Easily worth the $$ and proudly show others the results. One "Happy Camper" 😃

Will the Black shoe polish last 200 cars washes? BTW, the Cerakote is clear, and not black..So it's not staining it.

  • @mikej238

Its not bad but its hard to apply to large surfaces. I did my Honda Element with it last year. Couldn't get the uneven greasy look out.
Trick to keeping black black is don't get wax on it. Wax turns white. Don't run your car through an auto car wash with spray wax at the end.

what happens when you get it on the paint? Black on a black car is an easy hide. Let's see it on a white car and see what happens when it gets on white paint.

Cerakote is the best; true restorer with no silicone or greasy ingredients. Make sure to wash the plastic, I use dawn (diluted) to make sure all contaminants are gone.

I use Griots Garage trim restorer and this probably beats it, except it’s wayyy more expensive. I also mod and refurbish gaming console and these types of products are amazing for making a 20 year old ps2 look new.

Yes, I have tried Griots. I use Griots ceramic green car spray and love it. But their black trim restorer is not in the same league as the Cerakote.. Its worth the extra, as it's not the same product nor end results.

It now has 239k but it is in pristine condition inside and out. Thanks so much for making those comparison videos!! Very informative video. Quick question. I see that this product was applied on the window surround trim and beltline trim on the doors, which is typically a rubberized plastic trim as opposed to a fully plastic trim. Is this product safe for the rubberized plastic trim in addition to a fully plastic trim such as the windshield cowl? Do you find it nets the same results and durability?Thank you.

Peanut oil. Clean black trim. Wipe oil on, give it five minutes, wipe it off. Lasts for months, doesn't attract squirrels (my main concern), looks better than any cheap or expensive auto product I've tried, costs almost nothing. You can use smooth peanut butter, too, but it means hand-buffing the excess off and makes a mess.
    Seriously, try peanut oil.
