It’s easy to see how a horrible detective can screw up an entire investigation. The female investigator has to be one of the worst I’ve seen in a long time! Sliding the phone across the table, yawning and making weird faces like a teen girl would! She is horrible at her job.

they're letting her work on it, on a big case so yeah it's kinda dumb. She's not as bad as the female cop I witnessed being told multiple times to pull her taser. She was on nonlethal, but decided to just walk around like she was casually waiting for an ubereats. She never even pulled taser, forcing her male partner to use lethal force on a woman running at him with a nine inch kitchen knife. I think it was donutoperators video, but female cops in the field are much more dangerous in my opinion. That police department is now being sued for wrongful death, and because of that female cop failing to do her job, I believe they have a decent case. This situation will end in this person going the mental hospital route for the rest of her life, but even police are short staffed sometimes.

As a person with autism, I hope nobody tries to analyse me like that. I don't look into eyes, I don't really have facial expressions, and I'm _always_ thinking very intently about what I am saying (assuming no psychological emergency). My sentences are pretty much full of qualifiers.

It isn't that black and white you don't need to worry about that. The things you mentioned have to be considered against a baseline behavior. In an interrogation like this, police always start out observing how you act before they ask you questions. They need to see how a suspect/interviewee acts "normally". If they observe that you don't make eye contact and speak very deliberately, they will factor that in to their analysis of your nonverbal communication. If using a lot of qualifiers is something that a person does in low stress situations or questions; that person using a lot of qualifiers in a high stress situation or questions is less likely to be a sign of deception. The same goes for lack of eye contact or facial expressions. Or even if someone displays "nervous" behavior or self-soothing behaviors. All these methods of detecting deception must be used in the right context to be useful.

I know my opinion doesn't matter much, but I think the male investigator did a great job here. He kept redirecting her concerns of 'ha-nging herself' to the idea that she is just recounting truth. It must have made her feel comfortable thinking that he believes her story (56:30). Also, stacking questions might not be a bad tactic. He introduced her children in one line of questioning that may have been too much for her, but by stacking the questions it allowed her not to answer it. Then later when he asked about the children again he didn't stack the question. But the introduction of the topic was no longer as shocking as it had been brought up before (57:03).

Too many times have I come to the comments only to find people making petty, demeaning, and dismissive remarks and starting arguments over the most meaningless points.
Anyway, I completely agree with how effective the male detective's tactic was. By introducing the topic of the kids in a stacked question it cushioned the landing for when he asked her directly. Great point Drew! They’ve said repeatedly they make small talk at the beginning of the interrogation to check if a person has memory qualifiers in their normal speech patterns. This is why the small talk is so important.
It’s also not always a sign of deception regardless, but sometimes ppl say them so they can change their answer later bc the answer they give is not concrete. Wiggle room.
This is also why they look for clusters of deceptive behaviors.

Often there is baseline first, to see how they respond when being truthful and how they respond when telling an untruth. Not that I’m aware of, instead of a simple no, or I don’t know might be considered a red flag, since in stressful situations, people tend to streamline speech. It all can be easily misinterpreted though. There was the case of a young woman, abducted and SA’d, who has escaped and made it to a station. She was so coherent and collected, they thought she was pranking them at first. They didn’t know that she had lived a rough life that had prepared her to dissociate enough from the feelings to address the issue.
