Thank you. I never could work with metallics, but watched this video yesterday and it made all the difference. I don't have the thread stand, but use my normal horizontal pin, then route the thread through a loop that keeps the thread running off the stand in a straight direction instead of off the end, changed my tension and needle, and did a complicated sample with NO thread breakages or problems. Thank you thank you thank you.
Thank you Sir! I appreciate every word you said. I am reading and studying all aspects of sewing so that I can succeed. When I read my machine manual from cover to cover, I realised that most people read it randomly. I purchased most of the Singer Sewing Library books and the best sewing guides from the vintage (Singer, Vogue Reader's Digest etc.., because they knew the best methods, and also the late Nancy Zieman who I can not get enough of. I will do exactly as you have taught and I realise that it takes hard work to be an excellent seamstress and fashion designer. You are a Real Motivator and Wise Sewing Teacher. I can not wait to start the Bobbin Work and Embroidery. You helped me sew much! I am a True Blue Singer Fan and My grandmothers taught me sewing basics, but we have to make our own way and like you said we have to work hard and work smart without causing ourselves physical pain.
Thank you so much for the video's. Every time I see one, I get a smile on my face. I know I can do it, because you tell me (and others). It's amazing what a good teacher can do.
Thank you so much I have been professionaly sewing and embroidering for years and you are so right. we never stop learning. I have done the same as you practice makes perfect. Thank you once again I will be watching more of your lessons.
God Bless you for this video! I have started using this tread 6 months ago, because I work with leather. you have to be open When I first started using the metallic thread in all color I had become elated about topstitching my pillows curtains etc. My thread us to break so often and would cause me to get very frustrated. I now have an expert such as yourself to show me a better way to do things. I am all for learning. So what, that I have been sewing for years. I appreciate your time and patience. The video is wonderful!! Once again thank you Chris and you can teach a old dog new tricks but you have to be willing to learn them!!
Christopher, like all the others...........I can't thank you enough for this embroidery thread life saver. I get so sick of the so called pro's that tell you their way is the only way that works! God Bless. Keep coming back with more tutorials. Hugs.
eureka! i just realized that the secret is to feed the thread horizontally and allow it to come off naturally. i have a multi thread stand, so all i had to do was put the slinky thread on one of the spots and voila! it's feeds perfectly. thank you a thousand times.
Christopher, your tutorials on embroidery and working with metallic thread are wonderful! They are so good that I am inspired to try this! I have been working around with all kinds of crafts, including sewing, but haven't found "My Thing" yet. These videos sparked my interest and desire to put my "artsy" talents to work! Thank you so much for sharing, you are a great teacher! :)
I only started embroidering feb last year! i sat on my bottom on the ground and my machine and learned on my own about unwinding metallic thread instead of uncoiling. i looked pretty silly holding the thread on a pencil!! ( Not one break tho ) i wish had looked it up and found you earlier. I love you and your voice! i am so gonna invest in the holders for metallics. cause i love them. they even were selling some super nice metallics in their DOLLAR bins . Crazy Right!? thank you thank you for sharing with the silly ladies. oxox Hanni
Ohhhh Goodness! Praise the Lord!!!! I had no idea anyone like you were on here showing these types of video's!!! Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge! In the last 20 years I've had 2. A Singer and a Brother. This last one I purchased was on Clearance, Brother Project Runway CS1125PRW. It's a beauty and sees soooo beautiful! I too have had to self teach and I have to agree with ALL you've said. There's some out there, that I go into a Hobby Lobby looking for good thread and the lady behind the cutting counter will ask me what type of machine i have, what am I making, da da da everything except is that your natural hair color!!!! And I'm just like " would ya please just do the cut and let me be on my way". I started out because I wanted to so grandma stuff 🙄 well they grew up and grandma's and grandpa's don't seem to matter anymore. So I said I'll start quilting and donate to the children of our church. We have some that come from other area's and they don't have a lot, grandparents are having to raise them cause parents are in jail or worse. So I've done quite a few of those and they absolutely loved them! But I didn't want them to know it was me, I don't like being in the spotlight. Later, as my church is heavily involved with a homeless shelter in Atlanta, GA I started making winter hats, crocheted scarf and hats with some sewing of applique's. Completely donated. I felt I was giving back. I'm still doing it, just waiting on the virus to hopefully clear, but have had them sent when we couldn't make it because of the protests and marches. So now.....I'm wanting to actually make something for myself. I think they're called pellotti pants? I can't read a pattern, I can read but just don't understand it. And you have simplified everything that everybody else has made difficult! So thank you again! I am now a SUBSCRIBER for sure! God Bless!
I love this thread stand, wish I had discovered this years ago, well worth the cost! I am able to use the large, really large cones on the smaller stand by simply putting a large diameter straw over the rod and a cone adapter thingy to stablize the bottom of the thread. Not sure what you call those cone adapters but they are plastic with a cone shape bottom.
omg you don't know how much i needed this video in my life!!! i was trying to embroider a faux leather with gold metallic thread last night and it kept shredding i was so mad. thank you
Thank you for this video!! I’ve Hated metallics for all the reasons you’ve named. Now I’m going to have to get all those cones out and try it again. Thanks again 🤣
Love your tutorials glad you mentioned the people who are not perfectionist. I’m a new quilter and recently did some FMQ with the clear thread on a Frozen panel for my granddaughter and believe me it is by no means perfect but she will love it. My question can you put the metallic thread on the machine and in the bobbin? Thanks for your knowledge!
you know what its so right.... everything you say is thru... so thank you ! Thank you and Im subscribing to you because in a little time that I watch you I learn a lot ..A Big Thank You !!!!
hahaha i love your comments at the end about the any brand sewing threads, I hear it all the time how certain ones are horrible. I have had great luck on 3 of my machines with all different brands and they all work great :) Again Thank U. I need to follow you. :)
Loved the tips on metallic thread use...also the tip about needle thumping noise ... how do you determine what tension you change to for metallic thread .
OMG Christopher can I adopt you!!!??? Finally a NO NONSENSE approach to free machine embroidery and (bonus) with metallic thread!! Have just seen your free motion machine embroidery part 1 and can't wait for the next instalment (when?) I have a small home business but also use a Husqvarna sewing/embroidery machine and am loving what I can now do with what I have learned from you! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! XXX Would love to show you the results of a dress I am making for my daughter.... ???Have a question???... when I embroider with mostly sulky threads I usually use a thread net over the cotton as if I don't it unwinds and gets caught up, is this because it is laying horizontally in the standard setup, should I set up the spool vertically??? PLEASE HELP! LOVE YOUR VIDS PLEASE DO MORE... PS If I'm ever in New York I will definitely visit Thank you again. Carmela (English Mummy in Sydney Australia) xxxx :) :) :)
I have babylock ellissimo and for three years, no problems, I took it in for check up once a year. All of a sudden, I'm having thread fraying and braking I mean regular embroidery thread.
Hi Christopher Excellent tips and tutorials I’m in the UK. Please can you tell me where I can get hold of the Metallic thread holders please Thank you so much for sharing your time
Great tutorial that looks so much fun and awesome I want to try it out ! 😁 I have question what kind of bobbin thread you using while sewing with metallic thread also is there a difference between embroidery metallic thread and sewing machine metallic thread🤔 great tips it is beautiful😍
Your videos are v educational and have watched about 20 of them. Thanks for being a great teacher. I am new to embroidery and love metallic threads. Martelli’s site does not list the thread tower any more. Any other suggestion for brother SE 2000. Thanks for all the useful tips and information I do enjoy your videos. Can you please tell me if the 3 Spool Specialty Thread Tower that you showed in the video will fit on a Brother Innovis 4000. I am living in South Africa and will have to buy it from overseas so I must know if it fit and nobody seems interested enough to help.
Thank You Thank You.. A great tutorial and information guide about sewing with metallic thread. LOL The one thing I have learned is to changed needles often..
I am new to sewing. I love the metallic threads. I have a brother sewing machine. Can I use metallic thread using a regular sewing machine? I would need to invest on one of them gadgets you put on top of the sewing machine ( like the one you placed on top of your sewing machine). I didn’t realize that I would need a special needle too. I found out about you because of a lady leaving a comment on JOANA’s website. So glad I was reading the comments on the sulk/ metallic threads. :)
Love your video! But, I can't find the horizontal 3 spool attachment you used on your baby lock. The one you sit on the machine's existing spool holder. Sounds perfect but where can I find it and what is it called. Thanks!
Very useful to know this. However I have to question your two finger method for free motion. Do you use this method when machine quilting a large quilt.
I really love your video and how you explain things. Thank U. I own 2 Brothers 770 do you know of a metallic stand I can buy for it that goes sideways?
Thanks for your video. Some say to put the thread upright vs horizontal I have the same machine. I hope it works. Very intimated & didn't have much success previously. Is there a shelf life on these threads?
GREAT VIDEO!!! I have been searching for metallic thread to use on leather and nobody has been able to help me find the right one. If it works on your vinyl on this video it will definitely work on the leather I am working with. What is that first thread you are using? I think that will be the best fit for my project.
Thanks for sharing your expertise. Can this be set up on the vintage straight stitch Singer sewing machine? I can't afford the new sewing machines and most of their extension tables are very expensive. The vintage sewing machine is flat bed, so an extension table won't be necessary. Can you give me some pointers?
do you tips for sewing with invisible/clear thread? it is so fine that my machine will beep and refuse to sew because it thinks the machie is unthreaded. Tried it in both needle and bobin. BTW, I ordered the metallic thread stand that you mentioned. I have always loved the sliver thread and ordered it years ago when it first hit the market but could never use it because of the problems. can't wait to try it now. thanks for sharing your thoughts and help.
I am eager to try your techniques. Why would one need to use stabiliser with the imitation leather you are using which looks like a very stable fabric without? I realise that responses may no longer be given.
Christopher, have you demonstrated Tacony thread tower with cone spools, for example Floriani metallic thread. I'm using the Thread Director Spool Pin Adapter TD0001, which should work the same way, but the cone spool keeps binding up and doesn't seem to spin freely. It's making me want to scream.
Do you know if brother has a embroidery tower like the one you are using. Hope you can help, have tried to find it, no luck. Alice Enjoying all you have shown. Thank you Alice
That is 90 weight so it is very fine, right. I would be using it in a Brother 6000 or a Bernia 200 think it would work or I might just try it. Thanks alot Judy
Oh I forgot to mention, yes I was told not to use Coat's Clark thread on my machine because it's cheap Mexico thread? I was shocked, I was speechless, I walked away...
Hi Christopher - How do these threads wash? say in a child's outfit requiring frequent washing? A groovy little pair of girl's Jeans for instance! I'm learning a lot from watching these videos - thank you!
Had to laugh at the different excuses ppl come up with like bad thread etc. I too learned its all in the set up. Its not the machine, its not the thread, its the user not knowing what and how to do it. Rememberd my keyboard teacher. I would tell her that my keyboard was messing up and she said its not the keyboard its you so lets try this again. Well I remembered that for all the machine type things I am using. Its the user and very rarely the machine. Thanks for that - love your vids
I use prewound bobbins of embroidery bobbin thread. I finally have had so much trouble with thread fraying and breaking as well as coming unthreaded that I have just about quit sewing then I saw this video again and started thinking about trying again. I paid over $8000.00 for that machine and I would like to be able to use it. The owner worked on it several times but it still gives me trouble. I use the correct needles and I can't figure it out,
luclugui1 I have two bobbin holders with my janome 500. I wound different threads on new Janome bobbins including superior thread bottom line and So fine ( I love so fine as a bobbin thread on long arm my baby lock and my embroidery machines) and Madera classic. Check with your machines dealer you may need a different bobbin holder or the pre wounds are the wring bobbins. And watch for a RUclips video of your machine. I hope this helps.
Great hints and techniques! You demonstrate using only two fingers to FMQ...but you are only using a little square of fabric, what do you do when quilting a quilt? Thanks!
Hi, I did find another of his videos where he does quilt a larger piece of fabric and shows how he does it...it's still a more manageable size, not like a full quilt, but his technique is great and something to think about, no stressing on our shoulders, etc. See if you can find it, he has bright yellow fabric in the screen shot. I also think he sent me a link to that video as his answer.

Hi. Thank you for sharing your expertise. Can you tell me what thread and size to use in the bobbin?
Hi Christopher
Excellent tips and tutorials
I’m in the UK. Please can you tell me where I can get hold of the Metallic thread holders please

Thank you so much for the tips! I have lot of new metallic threat and sometimes, but now I know that I was using it incorrectly.
Very informative! Thank you so much for doing this!
Love those thread colors

Awesome video, thank you
do you tips for sewing with invisible/clear thread? it is so fine that my machine will beep and refuse to sew because it thinks the machie is unthreaded. Tried it in both needle and bobin. BTW, I ordered the metallic thread stand that you mentioned. I have always loved the sliver thread and ordered it years ago when it first hit the market but could never use it because of the problems. can't wait to try it now. thanks for sharing your thoughts and help.
Ha! Love your video's thank you for the tips.
Thank you for your time!
Just wondering about bobbin thread? What size, and type do you recommend?
What do you like to use in the bobbin when you run metallics and slivers?
The martelli site has a picture of the Kwik-Spin Thread Dispenser but I couldn't find a price.
Does the company you mentioned for the special spool holder make one for vertical spool pins?
Fun video! Thanks!
Very good advice.
Good video thank you Christopher .but why can't you thread your machine up as normal with matelic thread . Thanks Norma
Very insightful, you made me giggle so. "...these two little fingers that God gave us" :)
I watched your video and am raring to go with metallic thread but do you thread the needle just as you would when NOT using the tower?
When do you use the bobbin threaded with the heavier. metallic thread? How does it work?
Hi I have Janome 8900 can you advice me what speed you use for free motion sewing. Thank you.
I am eager to try your techniques. Why would one need to use stabiliser with the imitation leather you are using which looks like a very stable fabric without? I realise that responses may no longer be given.
YOU ARE AWESOME! AND FUNNY! LOVE IT!!
Can you post item number for the spool attachment for side feed? Having trouble finding it.
Looks so pretty.
Christopher, have you demonstrated Tacony thread tower with cone spools, for example Floriani metallic thread. I'm using the Thread Director Spool Pin Adapter TD0001, which should work the same way, but the cone spool keeps binding up and doesn't seem to spin freely. It's making me want to scream.
where can i buy the side dispenser for sewing with metallic thread
Where can I purchase the side dispenser spool?
Do you know if brother has a embroidery tower like the one you are using. Hope you can help, have tried to find it, no luck. Alice Enjoying all you have shown. Thank you Alice
Alice 2 ui
Try your Babylock or Brother dealer.
Alice did you find a tower or stand for your Brothers? I saw a thing we can clip on to our machine but now I can not find it online> :(
Patti-ann Gracia look for the Thread Director.
Where do you get the circular attachment
I have spent the last two hours searching the internet for the thread tower and cant find it. Please help!!
Thank you, great advice.
That is 90 weight so it is very fine, right. I would be using it in a Brother 6000 or a Bernia 200 think it would work or I might just try it. Thanks alot Judy
What do you subject when the seqs6000 futura machine when it went update on the computer
What thread did you use in the bobbin?
Thanks! This was so helpful! Where do I buy the purple big foot and the thread holder? I am at a loss. PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks again!
Hello Pamela Mathews, you can purchase the accessories at your local authorized Baby Lock retailer.
The purple bigfoot is not a babylock item they tell me. Do you know where I can find that? I looked online but came up empty. Thx!
I bought mine from my Baby Lock dealer. Try doing a Google search or looking at your favorite online notions store.

Oh I forgot to mention, yes I was told not to use Coat's Clark thread on my machine because it's cheap Mexico thread? I was shocked, I was speechless, I walked away...
Thank you
God bless you,sir.
Where do you teach
OK. Your test material is heavy please show sheer thread material what kind of backing would you use?😌
what kind of thread do you use in the bobbin when sewing with metallic threads, especially when zig zagging?
Jean Blankenship Please be sure to read the information in the description box under the video on RUclips.

Thank you!!!👍👍👍👍
love you thank you
Great hints and techniques! You demonstrate using only two fingers to FMQ...but you are only using a little square of fabric, what do you do when quilting a quilt? Thanks!

I really did like this video and tips he shared. Your question was on my mind, too. Interesting that Christopher didn't answer either.
