I love this tutorial. It took heirloom sewing to another level for me with the metallic thread. I use the wing needle all the time in my heirloom sewing. When my daughter got married, I made an heirloom wedding dress for her. The dress was actually 3 pieces. I made a portrait collar, a blouse and a skirt of cotton organdy. The skirt was a circle skirt made up of 32 panels with insertion lace between each panel. I made the lace myself from cotton netting. Talking about starch, I used it straight from the bottle, so I could embroider on that netting. I finished the skirt with a Madeira appliqué hem. There were also no traditional seams in the skirt. I used the heirloom method of attaching the lace to the panels. I amazed myself at how well the dress turned out. When they walked through the hotel at the reception, total strangers ran up as asked where did she find a dress like that. That was over 20 years ago. I wish I would have known about the metallic thread back then, it surly would have been in that dress.
I would love to see photos of that wedding dress to see your work and the lace you made yourself with netting.
We moved and I am not sure where our wedding album is stored. I will see if my daughter can send some pictures from hers.
WOW, your daughter's wedding dress was in deed a work of art and of love with all the hand made pieces that were made to be put into it, i hope your daughter appreciated just how much her wonderful mum had done for her. My mum was my idol when it came to making things because she was a perfectionist first and foremost, but she was brilliant, unfortunately there was no way i could persuade her to make my wedding dress, she didn't trust herself. When she made anything the back or inside had to be as neat as the front or outside of anything and she would have me sit for hours redoing my stitching if she could tell the difference. Having said that when i was at Hairdressing college, part of the course was art and design and having embroidered my imaginary shop's log and a self portrait my teacher at the time put them in for a big show and it won, only thing wrong was he put them in back to front. I can do many, many crafts because of my wonderful teacher,, my beloved mum.
I would so love to see a picture of your daughter's designer one off dress flower because i love seeing such beauty. Norah, GLenochil, Scotland
I never used these stitches this way but I am going to try them. I think I would use them on table runners
So glad I just "discovered" you! I've been sewing for 50+ years and you just taught me something new!

I have taught heirloom sewing for years. I like the addition of the metallic thread. These stitches would be great additions to placket edges, cuffs and much more. On the last demonstrated stitch, for more glitz, try weaving ribbon or thread. That's also a tradition. BTW, in the original version of French Hand Sewing, the strips were usually left over from a worn-out garment. One NEVER threw away perfectly good lace or embroidered sections that were undamaged. Hence the stripped look on bodices and other sections of a new garment or reworked garment.
I'm wanting to make a table runner because they don't have the size I need. How would I turn the corner when sewing heirloom stitch?
I just made my handkerchief and used a wing needle, a two thread flatlock for the edge, and Coats And Clark Pearl thread on 100% linen-white. It came out beautifully.
I've been bingeing on your vid's & I got to tell you, your one of the Best! You provide tried & true useful information... My quilting/sewing is on a new level. Can't thank you enough.
Thank you Christopher for sharing these beautiful stitches with us and what they look like when they have a different needle being used. I have never heard of a wing needle before, and often wondered how they managed to make the holes almost like broderie anglaise. When i bought my first Brother 3100D over 20 years ago i also bought the walnut chest of drawers that Madeira had out and i love going to my little chest for special thread. I bought a Brother 4000D about 15 years ago and they both work fine for all my needs, even if they are a bit long in the tooth now. Thank you for making this video for us Christopher because it shows things that we never gave a thought to. Hugs from Norah, Glenochil, Scotland
Excellent tutorial. You're an awesome teacher. I learn something new every time I watch one of your videos. Love it when you teach how to go outside of the box and be creative.

Wow! This is great you showed me which stitches on my sewing machine to use.My instruction book calls them smocking stitches but I see I have a lot of the same that you have you call heirloom. So happy I found your channel.
What a lovely channel! So pleased to have found it! Thank you
I really love this. So beautiful. Today I tried the free motion quilting you teach. I have to practice, but I will learn, because it is fun!
Christopher Nejman, I love your videos. I should be using this time at my machine, but your vids are so good, I can't resist! THANK YOU!!
I often used those stitches on quilts and dresses, I have many of the same stitches you have however, they just did not look that good, now I know why......thank you for this wonderful demonstration...
Norah, thank you for the kind words. My daughter (an only child was very appreciative). I will have to ask her for a picture from her album. We moved after she was married and my album got lost.
Who knew? So beautiful! You are teaching this newbie so much. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
You're so great I can't stop watching your tutorial all time please keep showing us more.
great tip about using embroidery bobbin thread as i also do not buy specialist cotton - thank you!
I use metallic thread a lot. I've put off buying a wing/ hemstitch needle. Ok, I'm getting one.
Nice video.
I’m going to Joann’s to get a wing needle and metallic thread.....thank you!
Wonderful tips! Thank you :) I had purchased several metallic threads and ended up giving them away as gifts because I was scared of them! My next purchase is definitely a wing needle and more metallic threads. I have used Sulky threads and wish I could afford to do ALL my sewing with them!!!
Great video! Fun to watch. I just bought a new sewing machine, Singer Quantum Stylist Touch that claims 960 decorative stitches and I can't wait to try your methods. Thanks.
This is a great video with lots of helpful information. Thank you.
That is awesome. I'm going to look into getting some bobbin thread. I'm not sure I can use the starch. Many products have fragrances added and I’m extremely allergic to chemicals added to commercial products. Maybe the old fashion way. Cornstarch!
Search for Terial Magic. It’s a fabric stiffener that’s made with natural ingredients. I don’t think it has any fragrance.
Firstly Chris. Thanks so much for your video. I have been using the holographic thread, once you know all the tricks with working with i,t its just awesome and adds so much to simple projects.
Thank you ! It seems I never get a chance to use the decorative sitches on my machine, but now I will look for opportunities.
I can’t wait to try this out. Look outside the box,... I always have!
i have wing needle but haven't used yet. sure like to try it. very pretty. thank you for showing how to use it.
Very glad I discovered you! Neat new ideas for me!
Christopher this is great! I have to pick up a wing needle and think of some ideas of how to use this technique.
Thanks for this video! I'm now inspired to use all those stitches in my machine. I'm thinking collars and hems......
Just bought some of the opal thread because of this. Can’t wait to get it!
Just stating out so glad I found you.
I think this guy is great I feel like I could create an heirloom garments you make and explain it so well
My mom had this done to hem pillowcases on heavier fabric and they were wonderful

I stumbled upon your video and subscribed immediately!
So, before I begin a heirloom stitch, I need a wing needle and starch.
Thanks,
Am seeing this for the first time today but it will not be the last.....great inspiration .... thank you.
I am wondering what happens to the holes after garment is laundered and starch is gone?
Keitha Graham Was wondering same thing. Will all those holes fray?
Can I use the wing needle with a vintage sewing machine that has limited decorative stitches? Thanks for this wonderful video, Christopher, and I love the Christening gown, cap, and all of the heirloom techniques you showed, both traditionally and contemporary, you are so gifted!! 😊
KawaiiBlackPixie1 I purchased a Klassé Hemstitch Wing needle 100/16 and used an open toe presser foot. Also, I used Mettler Silk Finish Cotton Thread and chose the feather stitch on my vintage sewing machine. I was careful to set the length and width for my decorative stitch according to the instructions in my machine manual. I turned the flywheel by hand prior to stepping on the foot pedal to ensure that the needle cleared the presser foot. It went very well! I recommend using it on batiste cotton or linen; otherwise, starch the heck out of the fabric and allow to dry for at least 15 minutes before sewing. By the way, I didn’t use my newer Janome, but staying with my vintage machine, I was able to use the stretch stitch for heirloom. The overcast stitch produced an interesting pintuck + heirloom effect. I hope this personal info helps to answer your questions. I will try to answer more if you have any.😊🧵
Very nice video and great looking stitches. I recently bought new machine. I never did this kind of sewing or had a machine that could. I stumbled on your video after searching eyelet stitching and so glad to view this video. What are setting for metallic thread?
Wonderful... I have a wing needle, never used it. Thanks.
love your simplicity thank you
Thanx Christopher! Can't wait to do mine 😊
What kind of fabric do you use? Looks like a very loosely woven fabric. Just found this video. Love it.
I used to use a lot of metallic and rayon threads with a wing needle but got so frustrated with breakage that I gave it up.
Beautiful, inspired.
Would you please give me the manufacture name of that beautiful opal metallic thread you were using? Also would like to know what type of white bottom thread you were using also.I ordered me a new sewing machine so that I can do herirloom stitching. I sure would appreciate you letting me know. I've been sewing for over 40 years now and ready to take it to the next level.
can you do this stitch on any sewing machine. i love it
You need these repetitive stitches , where the wing needle will enter the same spot multiple times. Most computerized sewing machines have them.
Hope this helps. Happy sewing. 🧵🧵
Wonderful inspiration. Thank you!
Great video, thank you. I wanted to ask why would you ruin an automatic needle threader with this type of needle? Is the hole in a different position or sideways?
I was impressed. Do you have any feeling on the Skyline 7 machine? Not sure I am real happy, but just very new on this sewing machine.
A big Hello from Pakistan.... I love ur work.. its very new thing for me... kindly tell me the name n code of ur machine wana buy immediately can't wait to try this technique. Love Love Love from Pakistan....

Just discovered you. Wow! Yes, let's step out of the box! One question. I noticed your guide markings on your sewing machine. Where did you get it.. Oh wait, what's this? I can see it (almost) Cordell, Creations by Cordell! Back to you.....I subscribed!!! Thanks
I tried the Sulky Holoshimmer ('cause that is what I have on hand) and the bobbin continues to come up even when the upper tension is loosened. Any suggestions?

Sorry to be a pest. I just went to Creations by Cordell. There guide looks likes yours, kinda/sorta. How did you adapt their product to work on your machine? Do you have a video explaining the guides and how you use them? Thank you.

Cool! Thank you! I learned something new, somewhat re-new new (if this makes sense ) :-)
A little off topic but what are the black and red lines on your throat plate. Did you draw them yourself or is their a sticker I can buy. I cant see the metal marks on my destiny and it drives me crazy. I know there are built in red line light but I sometimes just want to use the throat plate. Oh I do love the video about the heirloom stitches by the way.
Hello, I explain it in this video. Here is the link.
ruclips.net/video/qTO_z15CA5o/видео.html
Yes I found them on a Web site and ordered 3 of them thanks
I thought you said not to use your thread cutter with a wing needle, but your using your cutter
He said to not use the AUTOMATIC NEEDLE THREADER not the cutter.
What Christine said, lol

Never used it for heirloom stitching! Really piqued my interest!
