As a sailor I can tell you it's natural for the helmsman and the cook not to get along. Both are concerned for the crew and both see their job as the most important because everyone dies if either screws up even a little. However there directly at contrast to each other. The helmsman must maneuver the boat and thusly has very little time to go to the galley or eat properly even going so far as to try and make chef's deliver their food to the helm, where is cooking is a delicate balance that can be easily disrupted by the movement of the ship and so in the chefs mind every screwed-up meal or burnt offering is the helmsman fault. Nor is the helmsman often there when everyone enjoys the revelry and thanks the chef so they seem unappreciative. And feel left out
    Just think on it

When Sanji told Jinbei to kill himself in Fishman Island, that hit different because Arlong was corrupted and gained a natural hatred for humans. That hatred spread to Hody and made him an Arlong copy, thus continuing the cycle of unresolved hatred which both Fishman children and Human children can also be corrupted from because they were told to hate eachother. The adult Fishman actually saw the terrors of humans and gained a real reason to hate them. Arlong took his hatred and decided to use it as power, so he made Arlong Park. He terrorized Nami and her town with that power. And he couldn't be stopped from it because of all the stuff that happened with his crew, so the only way to stop him was keeping him in impel down. But him and Jinbei were crewmates so of course he let him out. It makes sense why Sanji would hate Jinbei cause he should've never let Arlong out of impel down. It's not like Jinbei can convince Sanji to understand his decision for letting Arlong out because of how much Nami was tortured. He can't forgive that.

I feel like jinbei is too mature, diplomatic, level headed, and prone to conflict resolution to have much or any comedic dynamic with the crew, but sanji having a completely unrequited rivalry with and in which jinbei neither really understands or reciprocates is odas genius way of having jinbei fit his comedic cog in with the others, especially if oda plays up the women all lavishing respect on jinbei (them viewing him more as a favorite uncle type of character) but sanji takes this as jinbei being his romantic opponent and rival for their affection, would be a fantastic gag and maybe will finally down play the over used tired pervy sanji gag bc he's too busy fuming at jinbei for the girls responding to jinbei but not sanjis flirting, and gets even more mad when jinbei, oblivious, apologizes or trys to calm sanji down instead of escalating it like how he wants and does with zoro.

I see part of this conflict as Sanji still struggling with any form of positive male/father like influence. While Zeff is a good influence on him, he has encouraged some toxic traits in Sanji which include an inability to express his emotions.
Jinbe is kind of the opposite of that. He's more open with his feelings and they're not shielded behind mean words and acts which is basically what Zeff and Judge taught Sanji and is visible in how he treats the men of the Straw hats, who he does care for.
Emotions are a form of weakness and Sanji hasn't let that go regardless of how far he's come since WCI. Additionally, he challenges how Sanji has been taught or grown to treat women. He tries far too hard, while Jinbe is simply a good person which makes women like him. Something we've seen happen to Sanji when he treats women with the respect and humanity that we actually want.
So it's not unreasonable for Sanji to see Jinbe's actions as sort of like an unwanted step-father, who is not exactly trying to force his existence on Sanji but he kind of is by agreeing to join the crew. Sanji can't make him leave but he can express his unhappiness about it in the only way he knows how.
Maybe they'll have some kind of team work moment and Sanji will be able to put aside his issues with Jinbe and maybe Jinbe will have a good influence on Sanji's character.
Honestly I could go on about this for hours...

On the part of Jinbei freeing Arlong, I think it had more behind it than just the cycle of hatred. I mean, they were both crew members of Sun Pirates, and Arlong was arrested after Fisher Tiger's death, and that too, before committing any major crimes against civilians. So, I always thought it was only natural for Jinbei to free him as there new captain after becoming a warlord. And yeah, I always felt if Jinbei really wanted, he could had known what Arlong had been doing in East Blue, but we have to remember, at the end of the day, Jinbei was also a pirate, a very noble one, but still a pirate. He had no special connection to East Blue, nor did Arlong ever bothered him again and to be honest, a 20 million bounty is 1/10th of a Caribou; so I think it was more like if Jinbei came to know of Arlong's misdeeds, he would had stopped him , but he wasn't going out of his way to keep tabs on him. And that's why, he apologized to Nami. Also, if we think about it, the prisoners Luffy let loose during Impel Down could very much had resulted in something even much worse than whatever Arlong ever did.

    • @askafroan525
      @askafroan525 Год назад +17

Yes he is a pirate and not a saint nor a Marine who's job is to save civilians, same with Luffy, he is a pirate, a very kind hearted one but still a pirate who is not meant to be a hero. Jimbie who is a pirate, was mad at humans too because he was hurt just as much and discriminated. It's not his responsibility for whatever Arlong do, he can only take responsibility for his own actions who probably wanted revenge too but never did because he was more mature and took responsibility for himself. Jimbie at least tried to be a good person even with the anger inside him.

The reason Arlong paid the marine is to keep quiet about his ruling on Nami's island, which would make him almost doing the same thing as Crocodile but on a smaller scale.

Jealousy, obviously. I mean, who wouldn't want to be as awesome as Jimbei? ;)
In all seriousness, though, I do like this dynamic between Sanji and Jimbei, because it feels like a good contrast to Sanji's relationship with Zoro; whereas Zoro and Sanji are constantly butting heads, Jimbei barely even recognizes Sanji's animosity towards him. The new bounty reveals are a good example of this, while Zoro delights in reminding Sanji that he's "number 4", Jimbei doesn't seem to care either way and even wonders why Sanji is so upset about this. I do remember a little bit of friendly ribbing from Jimbei during the raid on Onigashima in regards to Sanji insisting on taking the lead when taking down enemies, but I think that's about it in terms of Jimbei "hitting back" towards Sanji's open hostility. I'll also add that, in retrospect, this all seems funny when you think back to when Sanji first met Jimbei, and how he was even more hostile then than he is now, mostly because he remembers what Yosaku said about Jimbei when talking about Arlong and assumed Jimbei was just as bad if not worse than Arlong, but allowed Jimbei to explain himself since helped out Luffy during the Paramount War. He even tells Jimbei to slice his guts open after hearing him out, though I think that was mostly out of his love for Nami and thinking anyone even indirectly responsible for Nami's suffering should pay the price with their life.
While I'm on the subject, I should probably add that while I do think Jimbei is responsible for letting Arlong loose on the East Blue, I think what often gets overlooked is that Jimbei WOULD have stopped Arlong had he known about what he did. Alrong made it a point to bribe the Marine Captain Nezumi to keep a low profile, making sure no one from Marine HQ knew about what he was doing, and if Marine HQ was unaware of Arlong's actions, odds are Jimbei was also unaware of what was happening. I think Jimbei even admitted he didn't know about any of this until Arlong was arrested. Besides, it does ultimately come down to how Nami feels about this, and if Nami is willing to forgive Jimbei, I think both Sanji and the audience should be willing to as well... Besides, Jimbei was in tears upon hearing Nami forgive him, showing that he truly is remorseful over this and was even willing to accept any punishment she deemed fit, so as far as I'm concerned, Jimbei's in the clear for this.

Although, there being a fleet going after Arlong does muddy the waters a bit, but for all we know, the guy might've been a new transfer who was the rare marine who tried to do good.
But yeah, most likely answer is that word never made it back to Jinbei, since the four blues are decently isolated, especially when it comes to bounty posters, as there'd be next to no reason for word about a pirate in the weakest Blue to make its way all the way up to the end of Paradise, and down to Fishman island.

I’m only up to reading the Fishman Island Arc and Jinbe is in the middle of his story to Nami about his relationship with Arlong, Hody, etc. Sanji immediately tells Jinbe at the beginning to choose his words wisely, because based on what he says, he may or may not choose to forgive Jinbe.
First, the power to forgive rests solely upon Nami’s shoulders, not Sanji’s. I can understand him being upset because of Nami’s past, however, he’s literally friends with Hachi, one of Arlong’s underlings. He’s a hypocrite in that regard.
Secondly, he tells Jinbe to kill himself, after Jinbe has poured his heart out and revealed the past discriminations that Fishmen and Merfolk alike have endured by the hands of humans. His story was impactful because it shed a lot of light on why Arlong and Hody and other Fishmen hated humans. It’s an unfortunate cycle of hated that simply did not resonate with him, and for that Sanji comes off as an insensitive jerk to me.
Furthermore, Jinbe killing himself won’t change anything and it won’t end Nami’s suffering from the past.
But on the other hand, I really loved Nami’s resolve. She finally found some form of closure over her past, and though she still hates Arlong, she showed real maturity when she rightfully told Sanji to knock it off when he kept verbally hounding Jinbe. Nami doesn’t resent all Fishmen because Arlong was a bad person, and she gained wonderful friends and made incredible journey’s because of said friends, in spite of her past.
That’s growth that quite frankly Sanji didn’t show, which is disheartening, considering he literally sat there and heard everything that everyone else heard Jinbe say.

I can understand where your coming from but I liked to say a few things in regard to Sanji hating Jinbei:
      1. He is not a hypocrite: you point towards the fact that the StrawHats all became friends with Hachi as evidence of this, I disagree with this. While Hachi was one of Arlong's crew and thus a part of Nami's perceived abusers. Please consider the simple fact that Hachi had no power to stop Arlong and as such had no true way of even helping Nami if he would/could have at the time. Also, the StrawHat crew can easily overpower Hachi which made their reunion something no one had to worry about honestly, plus on what might have been his deathbed Hachi did apologize for the pain he has caused Nami. You could say that Hachi's deathbed apology is where Sanji is coming from when he states that Jinbei should kill himself.
      2. Jinbei is partly to blame: Jinbei had the power to stop Arlong but did not and it is this action that directly/indirectly causes Nami's village to end up in the situation that it did. Yes JInbei not wanting to continue hate is a good thing and I cannot fault him in thinking that way but Jinbei let loose a loaded gun in the form of Arlong. Please consider that Arlong states that he is going to kill humans after being defeated and let loose by Jinbei. This doesn't happen in secret and in fact Arlong says this precisely for Jinbei to hear and Jinbei who should know Arlong's character feigns ignorance in thinking Arlong could possibly change. Now of course I talk from hindsight and it could have happened that Arlong could have changed but Jinbei's decision comes back to bite him. He says to the StrawHat crew that he had known of atrocities committed by Arlong, yet he chose to do nothing. This revelation is even more painful if you considered that if not for Luffy, Zoro, Sanji and Usopp, Nami, her village and more of East Blue might have died under Arlong's tyranny. I would think that from Sanji's perspective that, that is not forgivable. Jinbei released Arlong, heard about the tyranny of Arlong and still chose to do nothing, nothing. You could point out he planned to take action but his inaction leaves a bloody trail in it's wake.

I am fine with the strawhats having discourse in their relationships, but I hope this doesn’t become something that the fandom starts to resent sanji for. People already give him so much shit for being the dump for Oda’s perv jokes. Sanji is such a fantastic character with an incredible amount of depth, more than the rest of the crew I would say- but I think he’s one of ODA’S favorites to play with so he gets saddled with a lot of character experimentation that I think causes people to go up and down with their perception of him depending on how the moment hits. Which to me is the unfortunate risk and tragedy of him, because I find him to be the most incredible strawhat aside from Luffy. (No doubt because he has so many layers and is the perfect middle between serious loyalty and comedy. (He’s a sweetheart but also a doofus.)
Sanji has a lot of self worth issues and I can definitely see this blowing up for some of the audience when combined with Sanji’s overplayed womanizing. But deeper than that womanizing is an incredible amount of kindness- Sanji is a caretaker at heart with good intentions, and has always taken it upon himself to shoulder the weaker of the crew on multiple occasions, especially Nami, so people that hurt his friends get a lot of scorn from him. His overprotectiveness combined with the insecurity that he could be replaceable or inadequate could be messy.

    • @bluelight17
      @bluelight17 Год назад +1

@@regeice while out of line because it's not his place to decide if Nami forgives him or not, Sanji just had a very emotional, human response toward a situation involving a close friend. He had just met Jinbei at the time, and despite everything he told them he still let Arlong go, knowing full well what he could do and that hurt a friend. And it's not about simping for Nami like many often say, he was incredibly pissed with the Franky family when they beat Usopp up, and shouted at Zoro for not taking care of them earlier (but those 2 always fight so nobody really take it seriously, look at what Zoro said after Sanji left in Zou, not exactly the nicest). After that part, their interactions are just Oda humor, like all the dumb fights between Sanji and Zoro, but the opposite, with Jinbe reacting all politely to it lol I don't see any hate there (i don't think they even interact that much?), and he thanked him for helping Luffy after it. Just because he said one bad thing in the heat of the moment doesn't change how kind he is in general. He says he protects only women, yet just yesterday i rewatched some Punk Hazard clips and he left Tashigi alone to save her men, people from the Navy no less. People more often than not don't have perfect reactions to stressful situations.

      Not really an odd reason.
Jinbei let fish Hitler loose because he didn't want to kill him and continue the chain of hatred, but all he did was doom east blue to the chain of hatred.
Did you notice the only fishmen in east blue were part of arlongs crew. And arlong stated he was gonna kill as many humans as he could. So he went to the east blue, where the majority had never met a fishman, and created a new chain of hate.
Jimbei knew of this and did nothing, when he learned of arlong Park, he did nothing. And arlong had control of namis village and had his crew terrorize other nearby islands for between 5 and 10 years. That was more than enough time for jinbei to do anything, he was already a warlord and had the authority to do something, and he was the inheritors of the sun pirates so he had the duty to do something and he didn't.

About how Jinbei found the crew in Wano: I imagine that he got to Wano and waited in the water until he heard them. Whale sharks have the largest inner ear structure on earth and while we don't know what they actually can hear, some whales have been noted to be able to hear for thousands of miles underwater. The Sunny, like all ships, would have it's own specific acoustic properties in regard to how the ship resonates, more so because it's made from such rare material and with such unique features, any of the sounds from the wood creaking to the wind thrumping the sails, feet drumming the deck, the cola fuel pumping, and potentially even the voices of the crew could be transmitted through the hull and into the water where Jinbei could recognize them by the sound and come swimming from miles away. Not to mention the sea battle at the time which I imagine would have been pretty loud and noticeable underwater for anyone I don't think there would have been any other reason for a sea battle atop Wano at the time except for the straw hats.

I like how Jimbei is basically the chill military dad of the group, calm and reserved when he needs to be, but when you press his buttons, he'll show why he was so feared.

I wouldn’t say Sanji hates jimbei but I feel likes it’s similar to brothers and sisters they hate eachother but they’re also crew mates

The build up of Jinbei being a villain, could easily be explained away by the person who gave the information, back when dealing with Arlong, never actually left the East Blue, and therefore only hears things on the grape vine. And if you ever played a game of telephone with your friends, you should know how quickly information gets distorted, the more it is passed along by word of mouth.
So High Bounty + Distorted Word of Mouth = unknowingly providing misinformation about Jinbei.

I don't think Jinbei releasing Arlong was that much of a big deal he and sun pirates after doing such good work for koala still got backstabbed by humans and arlong at that point wasn't a serious criminal . At the end of the day Jinbei is a Pirate , Luffy freed 100 time more vilonet criminals at impel down because he is a pirate

So irrational. But I always did think he did have that grudge. In that way Jinbei is many things Sanji is not when it comes to the ladies, and that is patient and not drooling and understanding. Perhaps even more but no clue on that yet
So yeah, I can guess Sanji does have some grudge against Jinbei, it’s just irrational

Eh, it feels like another stretch, just like whole notion of Zoro wanting to kill Sanji for leaving to WCI.
Fishman island comments were made in strong emotions, something that Sanji is more than just well known for.
Later in Wano he's about as antagonistic to Jinbe as he is to Franky for instance.
He does have problems with Jinbe having bigger bounty, but that's about it.
And S-shork.... Well, Sanji does have past with organization that was both busy with cloning, AND with making bioengineered cyborgs. Also, with him seemingly being under influence of his germa tech power, sudden burst in emotions isn't really that unexpected.
    I don't really see this

Sanji was being unfair to Jinbei and he didn't order Arlong to attack Nami. Jinbei kicked Arlong out of the Sun Pirates crew. Sanji is being stupid.
Also, he's now jealous that Jinbei recieve the third bounty in the Straw Hats Crew. Jinbei got a higher bounty than Sanji (Karma for being a jerk to Jinbei). Nami should have told Sanji to stop it and leave Jinbei alone.
What happened to Nami when she was a child was never Jinbei's fault, it was Arlong's fault. Sanji should have know that by now.
