I think my favourite hint towards gear 5 and the gum gum fruit not being what it seemed was just Kaido reacting to snakeman with "wait... rubber shouldn't be able to act like that"
100% agree with the video. For the past few years I have stated this concept. My reasoning was ole Crocodile. Dude was out there draining water from ppl via touch, controlling vast areas of sand, and if I remember turning buildings to sand. Just the draining of water felt to me was a much larger scope than “I turn into sand”
Then there's the theory Crocodile was using his DF to cause the drought, so the second he was defeated the rain fell again

Crocodile also trained his ability to be reflexive for defense rather than the Logia weakness of ambush or surprise. Not an awakening, but an example of Devil Fruits being rather flexible.
He was as weak to haki or water as any other logia and their own weakness. Katakuri isn’t even a logia and did it 100 times better.
I can't wait to see Luffy show off his gigantification he's learned to Dorry and Broggy. What a scene that'd be!!

It baffles me that gear fifth isn’t super popular. It’s not only my favorite luffy form, but easily my favorite shounen form of all time! Shounen forms always see the protagonist getting more serious, and raw! But gear fifth really feels like we’re seeing pre time skip luffy but with the power to execute his insane ideas! Its cartoony, it’s iconic, it’s funny AND epic at the same time.
And do I think he can go even higher? I’ve seen some speculation that he can power up in the sun 🌞 and I’d love to see what direction that takes if it turns out to be true!

You can't ask an author to do goofy style when there is no place for it in the series. Every author does powerups keeping in mind the themes and context. it's nothing unique. It's fine if you like it but saying just because it's "different", it's the best, I don't agree.
I feel luffys final ability will be the manipulation of the manga itself. Imagine how cool it would be if luffy punches off of a panel and then 2 panels later his punch hits the opponent out of nowhere

gear 5 gave me the weird thought of his DF not wanting Luffy to die, like how the elder stars said that zoan DF have a will of their own and Luffy's didn't want to lose him, probably way off but it does intrigue me

I can see it as also a reason why he awakened, the gorosei says that the fruits have their own will (not sure if it's exclusive for zoans only). The awakened zoans from the empeldown might be artificially awakened, similar to what chopper's rumble did to him, resulting to them having no control over it.

@@Amor_24 I thought it was more the will of zoan overpowered their own will and took control of their bodies. Maybe instead of luffys extreme willpower allowing him to finally transform it was the opposite - being unconscious finally 'knocked out' his willpower, allowing Nika to take control
It could just be the durability trait of zoans, you can't just easily Kill them, they are at their most dangerous when close to death or KO, and I suspect luffs first conquerors KO by kaido made him stronger then his actual training in udon, just a thought.
I was not born when Goku transformed into a Super Saiyan but when Luffy awakened his devil fruit, I could imagine the hype of Goku turning into a Super saiyan.

Honestly its not even close... Super Saiyan was something very different. In an era where the transformation and power up where not expected. Aswell as an amazing trigger.

I've had this idea for a while but what if Luffy uses his awakening to inadvertently turn the whole red line into a giant rubber band, and using it as an attack similar to how kids will use a rubber band on their hands to prank others. it would be a fun Luffy-style attack that also had huge consequences on the world.
I believe that when we see Enel again, he will have awakened his DF. The things he was doing in Sky Island with his DF were very impressive. He was the first person we saw to infuse Haki with his DF

Gear 5th has been my favorite transformation not only in OP, but Shounen Manga in general. The fact that he's had a vast imagination ever since the beginning of the series, and now his powers has awakened to where he can *LITERALLY* bring his imagination to life at simple thoughts. Oda's having so much fun that he doesn't have to worry about some super serious powerup-But he can literally draw Luffy doing whatever and it works 😭😭 If he ever shows his Giant Form to Dorry and Broggy, it'll be the highlight of my life
I think the next thing for Luffy's powers will be finding out if Gear 5 is the hybrid or beast form for his fruit. If it is just the hybrid form, which seems most likely based on the design, I'm very excited to see his beast form

@@Mantosasto not really since Zoans can sometimes give their owners base forms some features that are related to that fruits ability. Like chopper being able to talk in his reindeer form.

I guess the way I saw it was that since Luffy's fruit is a hito hito no mi, he didn't get new transformations but rather merges with them. Basically, he has only one form and that's his hybrid form, which he is permanently in.
That's like debating whether Lucci's awakened form is his hybrid form. Zoan awakenings grant a new, stronger, separate 4th form. That's what G5 is. Luffy doesn't have a full beast or hybrid form. He's a human who ate the human-human fruit model Nika, so more human-ness would've just been redundant. It isn't like the human-human fruit model Buddha or Onyudo where they both look significantly different than normal humans.
Well, maybe. We don't know what Nika actually looked like.
The one thing I have always been confused about Tankman. The only appearance of Tank man has a subtitle, full stomach mode, always made me assume that Luffy can use Tankman normally but a less large version, but we never saw it again
I never really saw tankman as a separate form, just gear 4th while he was fat which gave him the extra properties.
Another thing that gear 5 has is that it is also established that the awakening of fruits not only comes with training or understanding the fruit, but it is also done in rare and stressful cases
Luffy literally had to die, kaido is a guy who has gone through wars, an experienced soldier and fighter, he swore that Luffy was dead, that is, he really was, luffy was really dead and only at that moment after being beaten and taken away up to the limits to unlock it fulfilling everything that had been said
About Chopper, his devil fruit is literally the Human-Human fruit. Perhaps this is why as time goes on, he is looking less like a reindeer and more human-like
i like to think that monster point is because giants are technically a race of humans.
I want to add one detail hinting about awakening in the doflamingo fight: when luffy used the culverin, dofla mentioned it looked like there was no limit to his stretching. The thing looked kind of suspect to me at the time, like he was actually hinting that the move was a step toward awakening, and it sits rather fine with the theory in this video, especially considering that culverin is a very prominent move in the "next step" (snakeman). Also, if you say this is a stretch, you're also forced to say that the pun is totally intended.
I do think there is a solid line between awakened and non awakened fruit powers.
For Zoans it's when your mind and body catch up with the will of the fruit, if your will is strong enough to persist you awaken and keep your mind, but if the fruit's will is stronger you awaken but lose your mind. It's a clear improvement to the physical strength of the zoan transformations. It's also an awakening of the Paramecia/Logia abilities some mythical Zoans have.
Paramecia fruits awaken when their powers begin to affect things other than themselves. We see this with Doffy and Katakuri transforming the environment into strings/mochi and with law and kidd they apply their magnetic poles/rooms to objects. If we include Luffy, who has paramecia powers due to being a mythical Zoan, he can turn the environment into rubber.
We don't know how logias work but it would probably be similar to paramecias.
The point is, there are no partial awakenings. You can get close to it, and continue to grow after it, but the actual line of being awakened is a hard, well defined line.
i think logia awakenings might also pull somewhat from the same principles as zoan awakening, like that giant tree form green bull takes and the giant electric giant form enel takes feel like awakening adjacent at the very least
though i'm also willing to bet that whatever happened on punk hazard between akainu and aokiji was the result of awakening
Well, I think a strange thing about the new information on Luffy and his fruit is that he’s a zoan right? Shouldn’t he have 3 forms. If gear 5th is either his full Nika or half Nika half human form, then isn’t there another transformation? Usually, the half beast form is the strongest, but I feel like gear 5th is the half transformation. I think the full Nika version is going to be the final “awakening”

Since Luffy has a Hito Hito no Mi (human human fruit) no number of forms matters since any variant of human added on top of his base (which is human) would still just be straight up human. It's the very same logic as no matter the times you multiply zero it's still zero's that's added.

I think a future awakening could involve him gaining some Logia-like ability. Considering his fruit was considered a Paramecia all this time to instead be a Zoan yet still has kept the rubber Paramecia aspect now. This means his fruit might be more than just a Zoan fruit. And also remember his Red Hawk. Logic has been its just air friction igniting his hand. But considering he does it UNDERWATER against Hody Jones leads to the thought that maybe his imagination led him to borrow a Logia ability, which might be a hint to him awakening further to gain Logia abilities to complement his imagination.
In the manga, Luffy has already shown his mastery of Gear 5th on Egg Head. We see him get angry and burst into flames, him creating a physical pair of goggles, and overall how he can slip into the form without much effort.
Luffy has been using his Nika powers the whole series in more subtle ways too. Like when he eats or sleeps to full recovery. These were always shocking to everyone around him, but we rolled as just comedy. Or drinking milk to fix his bones. These moments were all subtle hints I think
Or how Garp and Nami could hurt him without Haki. He BELIEVES they are strong and will hurt him so they do.

I think we've still yet to see the true power of Sun God Nika. We've only seen his "Full Moon" awakening. He currently has the same colouration as the Sulong form of the Minks. I think he'll truly awaken while the sun is at its peak and he has something like a golden form. Truly harnessing the power of the sun.
fun fact. the sun is actually white. the yellow color is cause by light reflecting at certain points. its the same way we can get a yellow moon. i mean why would there be a "moon" mode to a sun god devil fruit? especially if there is a chance that there is a moon god devil fruit.

You missed one thing about gear 5th. Now he can not just affect/enhance his body but also the environment and others around him. That is a huge step.

My theory is that Nika had a choice once Luffy died. It could have gone back into the world as a fruit or awaken and revive Luffy. The journey that Luffy went on to that point convinced it to awaken.

I think Luffys next step is gaining control over the gear 5th transformation. It was stated that zoan users can lose their minds and the will of the fruit taker over during awakening resulting in the impel down jailer beasts. I can’t recall if it was animal based zoans exclusively but I feel Luffys gear 5th’s uncontrolled laughter and unpredictable attacks are based on his fruit causing him to lose his own mind. If he can gain control that’s when we will see hear 5th be his “serious” mode
I think the next step is maybe understanding his power and developing more techniques

I like the theory that the gears Luffy use are like the gears of a car. Since a car got 1 to 5 and a reverse gear, I think Luffy's next powerup will be a "reverse" power, maybe making things go back their original state or even blocking all his DF powers, going fulll haki or making him able to swin again.

What if in line with the whole copying attacks, the next step for luff is that his imagination allows him to freely imitate other devil fruit users.

I literally just reread all of one piece in fiveish months. Oda has most definitely been drip feeding is these hints. You can see Luffys unconscious (as in he doesn’t know he’s using it not like he’s asleep) use and development of his haki all the way back in syrup village and possibly earlier. Plus you have nika form foreshadowing all over the place with Luffy laugh at buggy’s attempt to execute him in rouge town and the party in Skypiea. I’d love to see you do a deep dive video on this.
I’m pretty sure Kaku still rivals Luffy in devil fruit creativity with how he was able to use his giraffe fruit. And that was his first day eating it! Imagine how many uses he has uncovered now 🤔

In regards to Snake Man and Tank Man, I know there was an anime flashback showing Luffy and Rayleigh training with Bounce Man and how Rayleigh said its good for power but not for speed

I don't think there is going to be a next step. He made it clear when he got Gear 5 that it was the peak of his abilities. I think his next (and probably last) power up will be Haki related. In the last arcs, he learned how to use Armament and Observation Haki to their fullest, I whink the next big step will be using his CoC Haki to the fullest. I predict it's either going to be drawing strength from or to his allies.
but he already kind of did explore advanced conqueror's haki. He learned how to imbue his attacks with it
Along with the fact that he already has advanced his CoC haki by infusing it into his attacks, he is a shonen protagonist. I suspect there is more he will learn to do with his haki, but there is no way he would peak right before the final boss of the series gets introduced. There HAS to be something more that will allow him to liberate the whole world from the world government.
Honestly though maybe his next adancements won't be with his devil fruit or his haki, but with his name. Something unique ability to those with D in their name and then maybe some way of combining that with all his other abilities.
I’d like to add something that doesn’t detract from this, but rather supports this. The first time we saw a culmination of gears was in Thriller Bark, where Luffy needed to be fast enough AND hit hard enough to take out Oars(and eventually Moria). It’s easy to miss, but this is the first time EVER we see a combination of Gear 2nd and Gear 3rd for a finishing attack. (Which, when you think about it, is the basis for Gear 5. An ability that uses speed AND power-allowing him to access both in one Gear.) So that could also be attributed toward the step taken for awakening. But that’s just my opinion on that 🤷♂️. In terms of more gears, Gear 5 is supposed to be the “Ultimate Freedom”, so I think he’s hit the ceiling in that aspect. However, I do think he’ll find ways to adapt with it and do more with the power.
This is a really grounded analysis, it makes a lot of sense right or wrong.
I noticed in Dressrosa when Luffy flashed back to training with Rayleigh that he had hit a bit of a wall but Rayleigh pushes him to try something new.
It fits that after helping him train his body, Rayleigh was also making sure he retained that imaginative and improvisational streak to match it.
Paramecium awakening is imposing or manifesting the properties of your fruit onto the world around you. Doffy explained this.
That’s how I knew what Luffy’s would look like.
If you look at the 2nd or 3rd Wano arc title video, you will see the water and earth rising and stretching in the area around him.

I think to awaken, specifically for Luffy and his fruit, requires his heartbeat to beat as the "Drums of Liberation", I think dying (heart stopping) gave his fruit to a chance to get that particular heartbeat rhythm going and into his awakened form. Now luffy for awakening would have to get his heart into the rhythm consciously.

I always hate when Grandline says that Chopper "Mastered" his DF. He hasn't. He is a doctor and has an Understanding of how his DF works, in the same way that Caesar and Vegapunk understand DFs.
However for him to actually Master his DF, he will have to be able to go into his awakening without external help. Aswell as not have the drawbacks that the Rumble Ball currently causes.
Big difference between Understand and Mastering.
We shouldn't ignore the side effects either. Both Luffy and Chopper become Old people once their awakenings wear off.

If you guys didn't know? Luffy now can do what katakuri was doing, he can grow multiple arms and turn the ground into a rubber fist and turn himself into liquid sap just like katakuri
I think he didn't really awaken he more so took a step in mastering his true devil fruit (the Nika fruit and not the gomu fruit) because as it is explained by Doflamingo, awakening is being able to effect your surroundings with your powers, which he only could when he unlocked gear 5.

I think you're right that "awakening" doesn't mean there's the next step and then you hit the sealing. Apart from the imagination, I would add that it is also based on how they understand their abilities. I'm not sure if anyone here has read manga/manhwa(?) called "Release That Witch". It's not an all time great story, but in there a witch's ability was never limited to one "awakening", since based on their understanding of their own ability was theoretically limitless, it could manifest and grow in many different ways,. I feel that DF would function in the same capacity.
A key component of "awakening" for paramecia fruits is the added ability to affect your surroundings with your fruit's powers, which only occurred at Gear 5. For Zoan awakenings, I think you're somewhat correct. Each new "form" is a kind of awakening for Zoan users, including all hybrid forms. Some are easy, some require intense training to maintain control, like Chopper's Monster Point, and Gear 5, but the "true" awakening brings out the full potential of the fruit. For Kaido, it was his final form, Kaen Diako.

When you mentioned how his physical abilities might have been why we haven't seen him awaken earlier I gotta wonder how much of that is due to his age. Like, he's only 19, old enough not to be a kid but young enough that he hasn't even hit his prime yet. And he's defiantly not going to start stagnating in power soon so he defiantly has more room to grow.
One of my favorite improvised moves from Luffy was Gomu Gomu Jet Substitution. Tactfully replacing himself with Buggy allowed him to get past Mihawk and Buggy to show the world he could hold his own against the world's greatest swordsman.
First of all, great video as always Liam, the only disappinting part of your videos is them ending and having to wait for the next one (quite like one piece now that I think about it 🤔🤔) but I gotta ask, just how much do you laugh yourself out while making you speech sketch, I mean "menage a powa"???? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Thinking about the future battles of one piece being obviously Blackbeard and potentially Shanks, I feel we will see the next step passed Gear 5 in one of those matches. Example: we will see Luffy use Gear 5 to defeat Blackbeard, but he will have to dig even deeper to defeat Shanks. Or perhaps the other way around where Luffy vs Shanks is a Gear 5 usage, but at the end Shanks tells Luffy that he will need more than Gear 5 to defeat Blackbeard.

i really wanna see luffy incorporating actual weaponry shenanigans - like his battle axe and spear attacks he's used sparingly throughout the series (notably leg attacks iirc, his arms use cannon or gun terms usually). i'm basic though. i think that'd be cool still lol

I really think you’re on to something here. Devil fruits are a strange system, especially if it just goes not awakened to awakened. I have a little theory. Devil fruits when first made the creator/ person who wished and the fruit both had a will of their own. They both compromised and that’s base fruit. Then both the fruit’s will and that of the user works together to grow or something similar, in addition to this the previous user’s will is inherited by the next in a way. Once the both the user and the fruit start influencing the will of the power it changes and awakens slowly. A good example would be Magellan and Katakuri both very similar fruits but one is more awakened than the other. Magellan has started his awakening with his different poison attacks and using shape change with the attacks, but Katakuri has gone further beyond. Katakuri can also use shape change and such with his attacks but also with himself, that’s another level of Awakening, even further than Del Flamingo’s Awakening of just affecting his environment. Katakuri pushed his Devil fruit so far that he’s nearly a Logia type. It also makes sense why some Paramecias and Zoans are adjacent to others and even the swamp Logia that nearly works like Paramecia with its pocket dimension. Previous or current users have influenced the fruits growth and evolution and that is passed down to the next user as part of the fruit’s will. It’s very possible that Gear 2&3 were previous user’s ideas, that’s why Luffy learned them so fast, but Gear 4 was his own creation and it took him 2 years to get really good at it. Gear 5 is a combination of Luffy’s will merging with the fruit’s will as well as previous users. Also explains why Sabo knows some of Ace’s moves even though he never saw them.

Always considered Luffy dieing during his fight with drunk kaido to be what pushed him to gear 5th. After the CP0 agent interferes, The narrator pronounces kaido the winner and momo can't hear Luffy anymore. But luffy's determination, as we've seen, awakens the full strength of the nika fruit to bring him back as the newly revived joy boy.
this is an amazing theory you are so good at these kind of videos there may not be any limit to their devil fruits because devil fruits are like dreams, and haki is willpower, so there might not be a limit to how many times u can awaken a fruit, so we might see a gear 6 on laugh tale!

I agree that it’s a gradual thing. I first thought that Luffy awakened with Bound man because in the anime they made a distinct scene where it showed the purple skin of the gomu gomu no mi transition into his haki back. Like they are saying this is his fruit at a higher level.
I saw a joke that Gear 6 Luffy will be Gear 5 Nika but with weapons like a frying pan and an oversized wooden mallet
