And in the end, blood ended up proving true because he acted just like his bio dad would have, but also... just like his actual dad did. It's such a tragic and painful character moment because once you read the ace, luffy and sabo history, you see that he's always been that way. "What changed post-timeskip?": I think I'd say the story become less character-driven and became more plot-driven. We basically stopped getting new crewmates post-timeskip, so the focus was less on the characters and more on world-building. Pre-timeskip, each arc was basically driven by solving a problem for someone we got to know and care about over the course of the story. Post-timeskip, each arc is more about filling us in on the politics of the world and how everything connects together. Wholecake was kind of a exception, since we got to learn a lot more about Sanji, and I think it was a stronger arc for that. Post-timeskip, a lot more of the mysteries of the world came into focus.
I think this is partially why everyone keeps expecting different characters to join the Strawhats, like Carrot and Yamato. We've been trained to think that every character we care about WILL join the Strawhats, because that's how the story worked Pre-timeskip.
And it's no secret the other Strawhats, other than Luffy, just haven't gotten as much time to shine, Post-timeskip. They're almost background characters in the manga. We really haven't gotten as many heartfelt or emotional moments with them as we did Pre-timeskip. But, that's because they're NOT the focus, the world-building and politics and mysteries are.
There's also the smaller power issue. Pre-timeskip, the Strawhats were basically the scrappy underdogs, having to try to be clever to get around the problems they came up against. Post-timeskip, they're all a lot stronger and more capable, which makes grunts and smaller enemies a non-issue. Pre-timeskip, there's NO WAY Usopp could handle a dozen grunts, but he can one-shot the group of them now. It changes how the fights work. There's also a bit of inconsistency, since characters like Nami and Usopp feel like they can vary in strength almost from scene to scene.
There's also the panelling. Over the years Oda has just crammed more and more detail and panels into the page-space. Compare a page from the manga from the beginning to today. Where before, he might have a few pages that only had 3 larger panels on a page, nowadays almost every page is 6 or more panels PACKED with detail. It's impressive...but it can also feel a little claustrophic. It's all just a bit much, and it kind of messes with the flow a bit. And I think it's kind of hurt the appeal of Gear 5 a bit for me. It's a over-the-top cartoony form that FEELS like it should be breaking page-borders and be huge...but it's kind of constrained by the smaller, more numerous panels.
Each arc has also gotten MUCH longer Post-timeskip. Where before we had a few smaller arcs, Post-timeskip has been made up almost exclusively of longer arcs. Maybe this is part of the world-building and how each arc feeds into one another, but it changes how the pacing works, too. Wano was the biggest offender by far. Wano was long. Maybe too long. But, like Skypeia, I'll bet there's a reason why we spent so long there.

As for new members to the crew, almost every arc has had that one or two pseudo members that will be kinda apart of the crew for that time. They won’t always fully join the crew but they’ll basically be an honorary member. While not official, Yamato and Carrot are Straw Hats, much like Vivi is basically apart of the crew
Each crew member has their reasons for being on the crew. Vivi, for instance, is but has duties elsewhere so she can’t SAIL with the main body. One day, at the end of One Piece, the Straw Hats will have a MASSIVE party involving everyone they’ve made friends with and it will be the biggest event in history.

I think he had major plot points mainly figured out early, but then as we know about his character design, he would get an idea and weave it into existing characters and his world. Whereas in Wano Luffy gets knocked off and oh there’s the Heart Pirates to just fix him up

      I dunno...
Arlong Arc: Luffy stuck at the bottom of the pool, Gen-san keeps his head above water so he doesn't drown
Loguetown: A random lightning saves Luffy's life
Alabasta: Robin saves him from death after his first fight with Croc, the blop of water falls on him after he got sucked dry by Croc during second fight.
Saboady: They were fucked, then Kuma came and saved them
Impel Down: Luffy got rotflstomped by Magellan, luckily Iva's right-hand person came and saved him.
Could probably dig up more but the gist of it is that there's always some narrative bias to save Luffy and his crew.

A note about the Shakespearean characterization about Ace: character flaws and traits are the same, just reversed Ace is loyal to a fault. Loyal to his crew and hunt down an ex brother? Positive loyalty. Unable to let someone who doesn’t matter bad mouth your father figure and letting said loyalty keep you from escaping? Negative loyalty. It’s not bad writing or out of nowhere. It’s just showing his character fault.

I think, because Oda has a fair amount of control with regards to the live action, that we'll see an uptick in fans.

I believe that the One Piece is actually Luffy’s Nika fruit, which gives him the power of laughter. The proof is in Shanks and his crew, who couldn’t stop laughing until Luffy ate the fruit. Roger must have discovered the same fruit on Laugh Tale, the island of joy, and that’s why he and his crew laughed so hard. The fruit was the source of their laughter, and Luffy inherited it. That also explains the X mark on his chest, which is a symbol of the fruit.

The Wanted posters have been One Piece's version of "power scaling", and I've always thought that it was a good approach. It's not so much objective power levels that matter to the world so much as perceived relative strengths, as those inform the actions of players such as the World Government.
For example Shirahoshi's power is terrifying and would surpass any other character by far if properly harnessed, but since it remains secret it doesn't "break the setting".

The strength of a story is in its hability to connect emotionally with the audience, and one way authors manage to do that is by relying on a good narrative structure. Japanese stories famously follow the Kishoutenketsu 起承転結 formula which consistes in 起 (introduction) 承 (development) 転 (turn) 結 (conclusion) and that's consistent from the smallest scale (a single chapter to sometimes a single page) to the bigger ones (a hole arc to the hole story).
That is all to say that if One Piece was not able to administer the tension on a weekly basis producing a satisfying chapter each time, it would have been quickly cancelled (specially because Shonen Jump takes in high regard the weekly surveys readers do answering what series they liked most each time)

When it comes to Ace I actually really like his story. He spent the majority of his life knowing if the Marines found out whom his father was they'd try to kill him, and he also wasn't really sure he was even supposed to exist because how else does a kid deal with the knowledge they will be executed if their father is discovered or where your own birth is illegal. Contrast that with his Pops Whitebeard, whom Ace was very proud of, and you begin to understand why that taunt was so impactful when he just watched his Pops die and get his devil fruit taken away.
And I'm ok with the pacing, though some characters I'd like to find out more, I also accept that if i want to find out the full story on characters in an epic story I myself would have to write it. Thanks Oda for making an epic story.

I understand the tension argument, but I don't have a problem with it.
Pre time skip, all of the Straw Hats barley got by in a cruel and harsh sea with the determination of their wills. Luffy was pushed to his breaking point with Crocodile and Lucci, Zoro got destroyed by Mihawk and from there every major fight was life and death, and he never got enough time after thriller bark to recover. Sanji walked away from his fight with bonclay talking about how many bones were broken, Enel was untouchable except by sheer luck that luffy eas rubber, etc. All of these build the tension.
Contrast with post time skip: the crew spent 2 years doing nothing but train--this is much longer than the strawhats have traveled together. The prepared and over prepared for the new world, and it shows. They crushed everything until they were forced to face Yonko, *and they deserved those overwhelming victories.* Most of the tension comes from the collateral damage they may cause. Whats the point of being strong when everyone around you gets hurt?
Honestly I'm fine with this, and now that we're post Wano, a place where they were all pushed to pre time skip limits, i expected to see a return to classic One Piece tension
